Tyson Fury sends Instagram message to boxing hero Mike Tyson

December 10, 2019 by www.dailystar.co.uk Leave a Comment

Boxing heavyweight Tyson Fury has posted an Instagram tribute to his hero, Mike Tyson .

The American is widely regarded as one of the sport’s greatest champions after his impressive 50-6 record in the ring.

Tyson called time on his professional career in 2005, three years before Fury made his professional debut.

The Gypsy King has been a long-time fan of Tyson and took to Instagram to show his appreciation for the former heavyweight.

Posting a picture of Tyson at a weigh-in, Fury wrote: “This is the original bad man @miketyson he would of smashed them all in his prime. #baddestmanagereverliveth happy to carry his name, #TYSONFURY #GYPSYKING.”

This isn’t the first time the Brit has shown his love for his boxing counterpart.

Deontay Wilder , who is now Fury’s main rival in the heavyweight division, once said he struck more fears into his opponents than Tyson ever did.

This prompted a response from Fury, who was less than convinced.

“This is a message to Deontay Wilder,” he wrote on Instagram earlier this year.

“I’ve just seen another ridiculous statement from you, Wilder. That you’ve got more of a fear factor than Mike Tyson.

“You’re a dreamer you are, honestly. I’ve never seen a man dream so much in my life.

“I don’t know why you’re taking the great Mike Tyson’s name in vein… You keep mentioning his name even though he isn’t in your era.

“However, there is a Tyson in your era. And I’ll stop you in five rounds, you bum. You lanky skinny legged dosser.

“You’re a chinless bum… If you want a fight, come to the mack daddy, come see the gypsy king…”

Fury and Wilder’s first drought ended in a controversial draw in the US.

The duo are scheduled to clash again in February for the WBC heavyweight title.

In defense of Mike Tyson, something can be old and cute

March 23, 2023 by deadspin.com Leave a Comment

Alright, it’s time for a 36-year-old white guy to break down a TikTok of a 20-year-old man who looks like a toddler sparring with Mike Tyson. Yes, I’m just as confused as you because my first reaction when the video was dropped in Slack (you have to have a feed for it to come across your feed) was this is adorable. Tell me you wouldn’t have thought the same thing if, without context, you saw this clip of internet personality Hasbulla trying to break down Iron Mike’s defense.

To be fair to Tyson, I’d probably react the same way if someone who looked like they were 5 years old came at me with cute little fists of fury and a bucket hat. Just because something is old doesn’t make it not cute. I’d try to cuddle a koala bear if I ever saw one in the wild despite its appearance on the cute but deadly animals list . (Koalas were No. 9. The Slow Loris, a monkey-type animal with poisonous elbows, was No. 1.)

Baby Yoda is like 50 years old, but that doesn’t stop the Mandalorian or Peli Motto from picking him up and squeezing him like Elmyra . I’m pretty sure people were trying to pick up Gary Coleman until he was Hasbulla’s age.

If I’ve lost you between the Disney+, Looney Tunes , and Diff’rent Strokes references, now you know how I felt when the “We need something on Mike Tyson-Hasbulla” message got dropped in the writer’s room.

Quin HIllyer: Unsolicited advice to an over-intense Mike Pence

March 22, 2023 by www.theadvocate.com Leave a Comment

Former Vice President Mike Pence should do some work with his, well, style, but before getting to that, let’s dispense with something he said today on ABC’s “This Week” that nobody should say, ever.

In a fascinating interview in which Pence, as is usual, said a lot of thoughtful things, he, unfortunately, began on the wrong note. It’s a note lots of people have sung in recent weeks, but it’s a note that is way off-key.

“Well, first, let me say, I’m — I’m taken aback at the idea of indicting a former president of the United States.”

Stop there. Full stop. Why should anybody be taken aback at the very idea of indicting a former president? Granted, we all should be taken aback by the idea that a former president would do something that merits indictment. Still, that is different than suggesting that a former commander in chief should be immune from indictment if he does stray.

Here in the United States, nobody is or should be above the law, not even by unwritten rule. Imagine if a former president trying to return to power paid a kickback to a foreign agent. Of course, he should be charged and tried. Even if extra care is taken to ensure he isn’t tried for political motives, nobody in this country should believe power provides protection from equal justice.

OK, let’s move on.

Pence’s chances of winning the presidency are hampered less by anything he says or doesn’t say about former President Donald Trump or about any particular issue than by his dour demeanor. For 15 years, I have touted Pence as a potentially excellent president one day, and for 15 years, I’ve heard pushback, largely from women, not on grounds of substance but of style.

“He’s wound too tight,” they say. “He never smiles. He has no charisma. He sounds too programmed. No spontaneity. No inspiration.”

They say he might be dependable on issues, competent, and committed to the Constitution. But they want to see something, well, relatable.

On “This Week,” the reasons for those criticisms were on full display. There’s nothing buoyant about Pence’s attitude on any subject. As the cliché goes, he is serious as a heart attack. And when given a question he doesn’t want to answer, he repeats the same talking point in the same emotionless voice with the exact same words that he has used before.

How many times can he say that he will rely on the “judgment of history” or that he is “disappointed” in Trump’s behavior surrounding the Capitol riots before he sounds like either an automaton or maybe a “Star Trek” emotionless Mr. Spock?

Nobody is suggesting that Pence should fake some frivolity, that he should be something he is not, or that he tries to turn into a comedian. Surely, though, underneath that mask, there’s a man who can lighten up, have some fun, and enjoy life. Surely, without scripting some cue-card instructions such as “now give a half smile; then a muted chuckle,” Pence can let people see a bit more of him than the oft-repeated line that he is “a Christian, a conservative and a Republican, in that order.”

This is not meant as a harsh critique. It’s more like words to the wise.

Mike Pence has a distinguished record as a congressman, governor and vice president. He stands firm on most issues. He did the right thing, against immense pressure, before and during the Capitol riot. He would make a good president. First, though, he needs to win. To win, he needs, just a little, to lighten up.

Mets get preview of pitching prospect Mike Vasil against Braves

March 23, 2023 by www.denverpost.com Leave a Comment

NORTH PORT, Fla. — Mike Vasil went from facing up-and-coming minor league hitters in the Arizona Fall League to facing the Atlanta Braves’ deep group of elite home-run hitters in a matter of months. Spring training means being prepared for anything, even if that means punching above your weight.

But Vasil looked like he belonged for the most part. Other than the changeup that Matt Olson got ahold of for a two-run homer in the bottom of the third, the 24-year-old Boston native handled a tough lineup well. Vasil allowed two runs on six hits and struck out three in the Mets 2-2 tie Thursday at CoolToday Park.

Those strikeouts might stick with him: Olson, Eddie Rosario and Ronald Acuna Jr.

“When I got the lineup [Wednesday night], I kind of looked at it and gave myself a little laugh,” Vasil said. “It doesn’t really get much better than that.”

The changeup he threw to Olson had some run on it and the first baseman took it over the fence for his seventh of the Grapefruit League season. However, Vasil saw some swings and misses on the pitch that he has been working on for more than a year. It’s not quite a new addition to his arsenal, but Vasil changed the grip on the pitch about a year and a half ago and was tinkering with it right up until Thursday.

“The grip is fairly new in terms of the way I’m approaching it,” he said. “It’s going to come along and develop the more I throw it and throughout the season, as well.”

Drafted out of the University of Virginia in the eighth round of the 2021 draft, Vasil is ranked the Mets’ 11th-best prospect. The organization is trying to get the pitching pipeline flowing to the Major Leagues and the big righty could be in Queens in another year or two. His velocity has already increased since starting professional baseball, with his fastball having reached the upper-90s in spring training this year.

Vasil attributes the uptick in velocity to the conditioning program he’s been on with the Mets and an improved mental approach to his time in the Arizona Fall League. He went 3-0 with a 2.93 in the prestigious prospect league last year and came away with a better understanding of how to pitch to his strengths.

“The fall league really set me up for better mental preparation,” he said. “I think what I took from the fall league was, who am I as a pitcher and what is my identity? And how do I succeed against better hitters? I think that was a huge, huge part of my development as a player, as a person — everything. The fall league is an awesome experience.”

Vasil hasn’t been told where he’ll start the season but he’s likely headed for Double-A Binghamton, which would be a step up from last season when played for Class-A St. Lucie and High-A Brooklyn.

OFF TO A RUF START

Darin Ruf hasn’t exactly lit up the Grapefruit League, but manager Buck Showalter was encouraged by his double off Atlanta’s Jared Shuster on Thursday. The left-handed Shuster is the Braves’ best candidate for the No. 5 starting job, so should the Mets keep Ruf after spring, he’s likely to face him again at some point.

The double brought Ruf’s average up to .160 for the spring. Outfielder Tommy Pham, who the Mets also plan to use at DH against left-handed pitching, went 0-for-3 to drop to .143 this spring.

However, Showalter said the two have been putting in work on the back fields and have seen much better results.

“Ruf is hitting .600 back there,” the manager joked. “Nobody wants to talk about that.”

EXTRA BAGS

Infielder Jeff McNeil returned from the World Baseball Classic and reported to Port St. Lucie. He had nine at-bats on the back fields of the Clover Park complex and will continue playing in minor league games Friday. … Right-handed reliever Adam Ottavino also returned from the WBC and worked out in Port St. Lucie. … Brandon Nimmo (right knee and ankle sprains) had five at-bats on the back fields and ran the bases.
