Why Holly Madison can “relate” to the victims of “The Playboy Murders”

February 6, 2023 by www.newsweek.com Leave a Comment

Holly Madison wanted to get involved with the new docuseries The Playboy Murders because she can “relate” to the victims.

A former girlfriend of Playboy founder Hugh Hefner, Madison is an executive producer of the six-part Discovery+ series. She is also featured in each of the episodes. New installments drop every Monday on the Investigation Discovery (ID) channel and can be streamed on Discovery+.

Monday’s Episode 3 will focus on the killing of former Playboy cybergirl Christina Carlin-Kraft. During an interview, Madison talked about the episode, titled “Moth to a Flame.” “She was a beautiful Playboy cybergirl, and she was murdered by a man she had met who came back to her apartment,” Madison told Newsweek.

The episode examines the case involving Carlin-Kraft, 36, who was found beaten and strangled in her condo outside of Philadelphia on August 22, 2018. Jonathan Wesley Harris was accused of killing her, and during his trial he alleged that they were taking drugs before things turned violent. In 2019, he was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison.

“It was a really frightening case, and I’m glad to tell Christina’s story and to clear her name as much as I can. It’s a really compelling case,” Madison said.

Although Madison and Carlin-Kraft are of similar ages, their paths never crossed during their time at Playboy . “I did not meet Christina. She came along right after I left the Playboy world. So it was a very, very close, ships passing in the night kind of thing.”

Madison left Playboy in 2008 when she and Hefner broke up. She didn’t talk publicly about Playboy for a number of years but has since opened up about her experiences there on the podcast Girls Next Level and in the docuseries The Secrets of Playboy . She told Newsweek she’s been selective about what she attaches her name to but couldn’t turn down The Playboy Murders .

“When I was approached about producing the show, I was presented with the cases, and I was so shocked because I thought I knew everything about Playboy history and what happened to all the playmates, but I hadn’t heard of so many of these cases.”

She continued, “Of course, I can kind of relate to the women. Coming from a similar background, they were really compelling to me. It’s my goal to tell the story and hopefully let the audiences get to know the victims better and a little bit more about who they were, because what strikes me about these cases is they can really happen to anyone.”

Madison was in her 20s when she lived in the Playboy Mansion. She’s staying objective about her time there, even though she’s aware of some of the deaths connected to the brand.

“It doesn’t really change the way I look at my personal experience, but it definitely broadens my view of that world and what other women were doing and what they were going through and how they dealt with things after they left the mansion,” she said.

Episode 3 of The Playboy Murders airs Monday at 10 p.m. ET/9 p.m. Central on ID and will be available to stream on Discovery+.

Apathetic cops must finally come good and find missing Nicola Bulley

February 6, 2023 by www.thesun.co.uk Leave a Comment

NICOLA Bulley is an everywoman. She went missing during the most mundane, quotidian of activities – walking the dog.

That she may have slipped on a riverbank , trying to deal with what police called an “issue” with springer spaniel Willow, is something that resonates with every one of the 13million dog owners in the UK.

How many of us have sighed wearily, pulled up our jeans while cursing the dog, and waded knee-deep into some rat-infested muddy water to retrieve a pet or a disgusting, slobbery, seven-month-old tennis ball?

As dog owners, it’s what we do. Us slave, them master.

Nicola could be any of us; any of us could be her. We do it because we love these ridiculous, fluffy, fox poo-rolling creatures unconditionally. Their needs, very often, come before our own.

Nicola, therefore, represents every single besotted dog owner in existence.

Reports that Willow was found “bone-dry and distressed” is yet another heartbreaking piece of the puzzle. Never has the old saying “if dogs could talk” been more poignant.

How confused and lost poor Willow must feel, desperate to communicate what she knows.

Nicola’s selfies with beautiful Willow are universal, a grinning, panting canine in the hinterland, two feet behind a bloody ball.

Perhaps not since the tragic case of Sarah Everard , in March 2021, has a nation been so immersed in a national news story.

At a time of so much national misery, our collective hearts are bleeding for Nicola’s family — her two young daughters and partner Paul Ansell .

No amount of energy crises, strikes or inflation can detract from our united empathy. We pray that, unlike Sarah, there’s a happy ending.

Of course, Nicola’s 11-day disappearance has thus far proven beyond the capability of Lancashire police .

In a press conference on Friday, Supt Sally Riley said: “Our main working hypothesis is that Nicola has sadly fallen into the river , there is no third-party or criminal involvement and this is not suspicious but the tragic case of a missing person. This is particularly important because speculation otherwise can be really distressing for the family and for Nicola’s children.”

‘Crucial evidence’

The police seem wilfully unaware that a “hypothesis” is just that — speculation.

Martyn Underhill, a former detective and senior officer in the probe of the murder of Sarah Payne, described the police’s decision to air its river theory as “extremely unusual and concerning”.

He added: “If the public is told that they think it’s a terrible accident, it risks people switching off. It can deter someone coming forward with crucial evidence.

“Coming out with such a definitive narrative publicly will make it hard to row back if the circumstances change. And they’ve offended the family and friends at the same time. It is really bizarre.”

While police, HM Coastguard, mountain rescue and Lancashire fire and rescue service all scour the river, officers have been analysing Nicola’s phone and rooting through CCTV.

Door-to-door knocks have been made. Public pleas for help have been made. Still nothing. Our confidence in the police has never, ever been lower.

In the wake of Wayne Couzens , who raped and killed Sarah Everard, and rapist David Carrick , plus the emergence of a general culture of gross misogyny, policemen are no longer the kindly, benign figures we thought as children.

Alongside a general apathy when it comes to basic policing — prioritising Twitter clampdowns over catching burglars or taking the knee over solving crimes — now, more than ever, we need the Force to come good.

Yet you get the sense this one really matters to them, though. They are reading the dog-loving room and doing all they can to find Nicola.

Let’s pray they succeed and restore at least one iota of our lost faith.

Smooth that girl . . . here’s a warning kids

Or the porcelain-smooth forehead that has less movement than Putney Bridge at rush hour?

I mean, good for Madge for expressing herself (in as much as any expression whatsoever is possible).

But kids, seriously, stay away from Harley Street.

A RICH SOURCE OF FUN

RICHARD MADELEY accidentally called non-binary Sam Smith a “he” last week.

Like an exhausted mum scolding her over-excited toddler, Good Morning Britain co-host Susanna Reid promptly corrected him.

When the ever-brilliant Susanna isn’t perma eye-rolling at her errant co-star, she’s making mincemeat of obfuscating MPs.

These two are rapidly becoming essential breakfast telly viewing.

WIN FOR OLDER WOMEN

IMAGINE being one of the four other actresses up against Sarah Lancashire at next year’s TV Baftas.

Poor souls may as well get their Deliveroo order in now and plan a nice night in front of t’ telly.

Because that gong’s going nowhere but Ms Lancashire’s downstairs loo.

The Happy Valley star provided a one-woman masterclass in acting – every emotion in the emotional gamut displayed – during Sunday night’s finale.

Written by Sally Wainwright, I cannot remember a more perfect 70 minutes of television.

The runaway success of this BBC1 smash should also serve as a reminder to commissioning editors that we need – and, crucially, want – more shows with strong, flawed-but-eminently-likeable 50-plus protagonists.

Middle-aged women are no longer invisible. Let’s hope this marks a televisual tide change.

I’LL SAY ‘SEE YA’ MY WAY

A NEW poll shows Frank Sinatra’s My Way is the UK’s most popular funeral song.

Astonishingly, only 0.3 per cent of the population know their loved one’s funereal song wishes.

Now, call me a massive raging narcissist, but my best friends have been given VERY STRICT INSTRUCTIONS ahead of my big day.

As I’m wheeled down the aisle, open casket (full, smoky-eyed make-up) I want Elton John’s I’m Still Standing blasting.

And as the curtain closes around my (perfect, evenly fake-tanned) corpse, out will boom Green Day’s Good Riddance.

A photo montage of all my best bits (filtered, airbrushed, very selective) will play throughout the service, as mourners wail loud enough to be heard from Machu Picchu.

One of my best mates has beaten me in the song selection stakes, requesting the Stones’ Sympathy For The Devil.

Which, if you knew her, you’d know was fitting.

RESCUE NHS IN UNITY

FOR the first time, ambulance workers and nurses downed tools in tandem.

The NHS is at breaking point.

Too many chiefs. Too much red tape. Too little common sense.

After all, the NHS originally came to fruition as a result of the 1942 Beveridge report, a Tory and Labour-supported blueprint.

The Conservatives can’t keep harping on about their “world-beating jab roll-out” as a get-out-of-jail-free card for the rest of all time.

Scotland’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has been criticised for her Government’s policy surrounding the placement of transgender prisoners. A new Express.co.uk poll has found that 95 percent of readers oppose all who identify as a female having access to women-only spaces.

The Scottish Government has faced controversy after trans woman and double rapist Isla Bryson , who was convicted while living as a man, had been remanded in Scotland’s only all-female prison. The public and political uproar over this decision led to them being moved to a male centre.

Scottish Justice Secretary Keith Brown initially defended the Scottish prison’s service right to assess cases on an individual basis but later announced that no transgender offender with a history of violence against women or girls would be placed in a female-only facility.

Last week the Scottish Conservatives accused the Scottish Government of allowing “chaos, confusion and U-turns” over the policy. The Party said it would push for a permanent ban on transgender offenders at female prisons.

Shadow Secretary of State for Scotland and Labour MSP Ian Murray told BBC Radio’s Good Morning Scotland show last Monday: “The Equality Act is clear that single-sex spaces, including women’s prisons, have got to be protected under the law and it looks, in this case, people have been put in danger.”

In a poll that ran from midday on Tuesday, January 31, to 11am on Monday, February 6, Express.co.uk asked readers : “Should everyone who identifies as female have access to women-only spaces?”

Overall, 9,09 readers responded, with the overwhelming majority, 95 percent (9,411 people), answering “no” everyone who identifies as female should not have access.

Meanwhile, five percent (449 people) said “yes” they should have access, and a further 49 people said they did not know either way.

Hundreds of comments were left below the accompanying article as readers took part in a lively discussion .

The view shared by the bulk of readers was against everyone who identifies as female having access to women-only spaces. Username AlphaSilk wrote: “Absolutely not!”

Username Puppetonastring said: “No way. Only women, born as women should use women-only spaces.”

Another, username WhyAyeMan wrote: “Unequivocally no.”

And username wrathful said: “No, no man who identifies as a woman should be allowed anywhere near biological women’s spaces.”

However, other readers were more inclusive in their comments. Username leafspot said: “No. I do believe though, that thought needs to be given to transgender women who have had full reconstructive surgery.”

While username Joolsaria commented: “Make all loos individual stalls and get rid of the wash areas, problem solved.”

Talk TV’s Piers Morgan sat down with Prime Minister Rishi Sunak to mark 100 days in office and during the interview asked him about the definition of what a woman was and his views on trans-woman’s rights.

Mr Sunak said the case of Bryson showed “some of the challenges” around gender recognition laws and that it is “biological sex” which matters when protecting women-only spaces.

Rishi Sunak

He explained: “Now that, you know, we can and will have compassion and tolerance and understanding for everybody who is thinking about transitioning and changing their identity or gender.

“But you know, for me, when it comes to whether it’s sex, whether it’s women’s spaces, whether it’s prisons, biological sex really matters.”

Holyrood passed the Gender Recognition Reform (Scotland) Bill in December but the legislation was later blocked from becoming law by Westminster. Scottish Secretary Alister Jack actioned section 35 of the Scotland Act 1998 for the first time to block the legislation, expressing concerns about the “significant impact” it would have on existing equalities law.

Lord Keen said there were “real and widespread concerns about its impact upon the law of the United Kingdom” and that it would be “constitutionally improper” to allow it to come into effect.
