Asus wins multiple Computex awards while embroiled in controversy

May 23, 2023 by www.techspot.com Leave a Comment

Why it matters: With the warranty fiasco over Ryzen CPU burnouts on its motherboards and an update that caused widespread issues in its routers, Asus has not been having a good time of late. But the Taiwanese giant can take solace in the fact that its products have just received multiple awards in the run-up to Computex 2023.

Asus announced that several of its products were winners at the Computex 2023 Best Choice Awards. The coveted Computex 2023 Best Choice Golden Award went to the company’s new Zenbook Pro 14 Duo OLED (UX8402) laptop (top), which it says is the world’s first 14.5-inch 2.8K 120Hz OLED laptop with a second display.

Another Asus laptop, the ExpertBook B9 OLED business laptop, took the Sustainable Tech Special Award thanks to its eco-friendly materials and manufacturing technology. While the 16-inch series of ProArt Studiobook creator laptops won a category award.

Other category award winners included the Asus ROG Swift OLED PG49WCD. This super-ultrawide (5120 x 1440) features an 1800R QD-OLED panel with a 144 Hz refresh rate and 0.03 ms response time.

The Asus healthub, which integrates software, hardware, cloud-based health Dashboard, and video conferencing systems for healthcare business solutions, received a category award. As did the Asus PINBO, its robot designed to revolutionize STEAM and AI education.

Finally, there was some welcome news for an Asus motherboard. The ROG Maximus Z790 Extreme motherboard was another Category Award recipient. The E-ATX mobo supports 13th-gen intel CPUs and DDR5 memory while boasting 24+1 power stages along with advanced connectivity options, such as Intel AX411 WiFi 6E with Double Connect Technology.

Asus received a slew of bad publicity recently over overheating Ryzen 7000 CPUs on its high-end AM5 motherboards and the company not honoring warranty policies for damaged boards. It led to heavy criticism from YouTube channels such as Gamers Nexus and Jay’s 2 Cents, the latter of which removed Asus as a sponsor.

Even before the furor from that debacle calmed down, Asus was forced to apologize after a routine security maintenance procedure unexpectedly took its routers offline.

The Bancroft Prizes, given annually by Columbia University, were awarded last night to Stanley L. Engerman and Robert W. Fogel, authors of “Time on the Cross,” the twovolume study or American slavery; Eugene D. Genovese, author of another slavery work, “Roll, Jordan, Roll,” and Alexander L. George and Richard Smoke, who wrote “Deterrence in American Foreign Policy: Theory and Practice.”

Some of the university’s trustees disputed selection of the work by Professors Engerman and Fogel. A university spokesman said that some trustees who were not named, were concerned over conclusions in “Time on the Cross,” that were “based on new methods of data analysis.” The spokesman said further that the dissenting trustees “believed that the authors’ methods of processing vast amounts of materials statistically may require further study before full value can be placed on the books’ indings. which challenge traditional views r.f American slave life.”

In “Time on the Cross” the two economics professors contended that the life of black slaves in America was less wretched and more productive than had previously been depicted.

Each $4,000 award is for “books of exceptional merit and distinction in American history (including biography), American diplomacy and the international relations of the United States.” The awards were presented at a dinner in Low Memorial Library on the Columbia campus.

Writer Patrick McGuinness has won the Welsh Book of the Year award for the second time in four years.

His memoir Other People’s Countries is about his childhood in the town of Bouillon on the Belgian border, where his mother was born.

Mr McGuiness, who also topped the non-fiction category, won the prize in 2012 for his novel The Last Hundred Days.

The Welsh-language award, presented in Caernarfon, went to Gareth F Williams for his wartime novel Awst yn Anogia.

Judge and poet Paul Henry said McGuinness’s book was stylistically “brilliant”.

“It’s a poet’s prose at its best – perfectly paced, effortless in its devices,” he added.

McGuinness beat Super Furry Animals frontman Gruff Rhys, whose book American Interior was shortlisted. It was part of a multi-media project retracing the journey of his distant ancestor, the explorer John Evans.

McGuinness, who is an Oxford professor of French and comparative literature, picked up the award in his home town Caernarfon.

His debut novel, a spy thriller inspired by his experience of the 1989 Romanian revolution, had won the award four years ago and was also long-listed for the Man Booker Prize.

The winner of the Roland Mathias Poetry Award 2015 was Tiffany Atkinson for So Many Moving Parts.

Cynan Jones won the fiction prize in English for his story of a grieving farmer and a badger-baiter, The Dig.

Costa Poetry Prize winner Jonathan Edwards won the Wales Arts Review People’s Choice Prize for his debut collection My Family and Other Superheroes.
