The New Shows and Movies Available on Paramount+ at Launch

March 3, 2021 by www.newsweek.com Leave a Comment

CBS All Access is becoming Paramount+ this month—and along with the new name comes 30,000 hours of content from the ViacomCBS group of networks and companies, which includes MTV, Nickelodeon, BET, Comedy Central and many more.

Though Paramount+ has recently grabbed headlines by announcing upcoming projects like reboots of Frasier , iCarly and Rugrats , none of these will be available at launch. The service, however, is offering new shows and movies from the world of Spongebob Squarepants , a treat for fans of vintage MTV reality shows, plus an eye-opening documentary about the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic.

What new shows and movies are on Paramount+?

60 Minutes+

Correspondents Enrique Acevedo, Seth Doane, Wes Lowery and Laurie Segall bring a spin-off of the iconic news show which, per Paramount+, “bring Paramount+ viewers a new perspective on the investigative reporting and exclusive newsmaker interviews that have made 60 Minutes must-watch television for generations.”

76 Days

A documentary film, currently shortlisted for best documentary at the 2021 Oscars , which looks into the earliest days of the coronavirus outbreak in Wuhan, China and how is affected frontline hospital workers.

For Heaven’s Sake

A perhaps unique blend of comedy and true crime documentary which explores the disappearance of Harold Heaven from a remote Canadian cabin in the 1930s.

Kamp Koral: SpongeBob’s Under Years

A prequel to the beloved cartoon Spongebob Squarepants , which tells the story (in CGI) of how the residents of Bikini Bottom first met at a summer camp.

The Real World: Homecoming: New York

The stars of the original series of groundbreaking MTV reality show The Real World return to the same NYC lost they last shared in 1992, with Norman Korpi, Julie Gentry, Becky Blasband, Kevin Powell, Andre Comeau and Heather Gardner back together for the first time in nearly 30 years (Eric Nies is set to take part virtually.)

The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run

The second of Paramount+’s two Spongebob projects, this is the delayed CG movie spin-off from the original show that was initially set to hit U.S. cinemas in February 2019, before being delayed multiple times (including four times during 2020.)

Tooning Out the News Season 2

The second season of Stephen Colbert ‘s animated satire show.

Existing CBS All Access Originals

Though CBS All Access is getting a rebrand, that does not mean it is losing all of its existing content. Among the originals that new subscribers will be able to watch is the acclaimed The Good Fight ( a spin-off of The Good Wife starring Christine Baranski), as well as the streamer’s growing list of Star Trek shows like Discovery, Picard and the animated Lower Decks.

Also original to CBS All Access is Stephen King adaptation The Stand , the Lucy Liu-starring Why Women Kill and the Jordan Peele-hosted Twilight Show (though that was recently canceled).

The streamer is also set to expand its catalog with 30,000 hours of TV and film from the ViacomCBS archives, though they have not revealed what content is expected to be available at launch.

Molly Ringwald Reveals Her Favorite Teen Movie

September 25, 2021 by www.newsweek.com Leave a Comment

The Breakfast Club , Pretty in Pink and Sixteen Candles —arguably three of the best teen movies of the genre, in the ’80s at least.

Molly Ringwald, the star of all three, remains a teen icon to this day.

Now aged 53 and a mom to teenagers herself , the John Hughes muse knows a thing or two about the genre of teen movies.

“One would think that I would have some special insight into being a teenager after having been one of the most famous teenagers ever and I find that I’m really sort of in the weeds along with every other parent,” Ringwald laughed in an interview with Newsweek .

“You know, when I was a teenager so much was different. All of the issues that we had to contend with—the bullying, the insecurity, high school—all of that that hasn’t changed, but what has changed, obviously is the internet,” Ringwald said.

“The fact that kids have to deal with all of that stuff 24/7, and the stresses of the climate and all of that so I really do think that, that it’s harder to be a teenager now.”

But as a teen icon, what modern teen movie does Ringwald think nailed it?

The answer is Eighth Grade , the 2018 teen drama written and directed by Bo Burnham.

“I think my favorite teen movie of all time is probably Eighth Grade , the Bo Burnham movie with Elsie Fisher,” Ringwald revealed.

“I think that to me was that sort of captured the spirit of the movies that I did with John Hughes.”

Ringwald says that the movie “seemed the most true to life in terms of what teams are going through today with the pressures of social media.”

She added: “It’s funny and it’s moving and I think that that’s probably my favorite.”

Ringwald also starred in the beloved Netflix trilogy The Kissing Booth and she says that playing a mom was different but a lot of fun.

“It was a completely different experience and it was a lot of fun to make those movies,” she said. “It was really very low pressure for me because I was basically the mom character—the sort of ‘teen Buddha’ if you will.”

As for her own movies, Ringwald still holds a deep affection for them and to this day, still loves the first 20 minutes of The Breakfast Club .

“I think the first 20 minutes of The Breakfast Club is one of the best openings really of any movie of all time,” she said.

Ringwald is now an advocate for National Meningitis Association and The 16 Vaccine campaign, which urges teens and their parents to get the second of two bacterial meningitis vaccine shots.

“We want to do everything we possibly can to help protect our kids,” she said of the campaign.

“So I’m trying to encourage parents to talk to their teens’ doctor, not just about the meningitis vaccine but also about other adolescent vaccines to make sure that their kids are up to date on all the vaccinations that they should have.”

She added: “I have 12-year-old twins and 17-year-old daughters so it’s something that, that I think about a lot. As a parent, you really want to do everything you possibly can to help protect your kids.”

Parents can visit The16Vaccine.org to learn more about meningococcal disease and prevention, hear firsthand stories from survivors and advocates, and access educational resources.

You Can Now Get Paid $1,234 to Watch Your Five Favorite Childhood Movies

November 19, 2021 by www.newsweek.com Leave a Comment

With Ghostbusters back in theaters and another Indiana Jones on the way, there’s never been a better time to indulge in the movies that shaped your youth.

Even better still, a satellite TV channel is looking to pay one lucky applicant $1,234 to re-watch their five favorite childhood films as part of an epic movie marathon.

That works out at just over $246 per movie to watch the likes of Who Framed Roger Rabbit? , Aladdin or maybe something a little more modern like Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone .

USDish will supply your five chosen movies, leaving you with the enviable task of watching them all from the comfort of your couch and getting paid for your time too.

According to USDish.com, applying is, to quote The Karate Kid , “easier than a sweep of the leg.”

“We’re looking for one person who’s willing to revisit their favorite childhood films and tell us all about it,” they said. “No degree, background check, or drug test is required to complete this adventure.”

In addition to the privilege of getting paid to watch great movies, the successful applicant will receive a “swag bag” containing $350 worth of goodies including personalized candy from the decade you were born and something to keep you warm while you binge.

After watching all of your chosen films, you’ll be expected to fill out a report comparing your experience of each movie now with what it was like seeing it as a child.

USDish explained: “You’re an ideal candidate if you take detailed notes on how each movie made you feel as a kid versus watching now as an adult, share the nostalgic moments on your social media and, of course, party on, dude.”

“For an even more excellent adventure, invite your kids (if applicable) to watch your favorite five with you,” USDish added. “You’ll have 15 days to complete your trip down nostalgia lane, and, remember, you choose the five movies to watch for a chance to win $1,234. It’s so easy, it’s—dare we say, inconceivable!”

To apply, you need to be over 18 and a U.S. citizen, and fill out a form choosing your five favorite childhood films as well as explaining, in 2,000 characters or less, why you are the ideal candidate. To have an even better chance, you can also submit a video as part of your application.

The deadline for entries is Friday, December 17. The successful applicant will be contacted via email by USDish on Wednesday December 29. To apply, click here .

Meanwhile , Ghostbusters: Afterlife is out in theaters and features several notable cameos from the stars of the original film but some are still wondering— will Rick Moranis be making an appearance?

Moreover, fans of all things nostalgia have been given a first proper look at Lily James and Sebastian Stan playing Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee in the upcoming Hulu series Pam & Tommy .

When is the Barbie movie out? Release date, plot details and latest trailer

May 27, 2023 by metro.co.uk Leave a Comment

It’s going to be a confusing summer – while we all agree plastic is harming the environment, the Barbie movie is screaming for a plastic fantastic time.

While this is far from the first Barbie movie ever released – shout-out to all the hardcore fans who’ve watched the likes of Barbie in the Nutcracker – it is the first one coming to the big screen.

And it’s coming with quite a stacked cast, star-studded soundtrack and a whole lot of anticipation.

Come on Barbie, let’s go party, indeed!

Here’s all you need to know before immersing yourself in the fantasy world…

Who is in the cast?

Margot Robbie stars as Mattel’s titular blonde icon, and she has a whole lot of star power with her, namely her Ken being played by Ryan Gosling (because who else?). ‘It comes with a lot of baggage!’ the Wolf of Wall Street star told British Vogue in June 2021.

‘And a lot of nostalgic connections. But with that comes a lot of exciting ways to attack it. People generally hear ‘Barbie’ and think, I know what that movie is going to be, and then they hear that Greta Gerwig is writing and directing it, and they’re like, Oh, well, maybe I don’t….’

Will Ferrell is down to play CEO of toy company Mattel, plus Ugly Betty’s America Ferrera , SNL’s Kate McKinnon , Marvel’s Simu Liu , Insecure’s Issa Rae , new Doctor Who Ncuti Gatwa , Michael Cera , Alexandra Shipp , Hari Nef , Emerald Fennell , and Emma Mackey are all set to have parts among others, as rumour has it the Barbie movie will feature multiple Barbies and Kens.

And that’s not even including Dame Helen Mirren’s guest spot as a narrator.

What is the plot?

The new trailer has finally given us more idea of a solid storyline.

Barbie and Ken are having the time of their lives in the colourful and seemingly perfect world of Barbie Land.

However, when they get a chance to go to the real world, they soon discover the joys and perils of living among humans.

Is there a trailer?

There most certainly is, and it’s well, as plastic as you’d imagine. Greta, who co-wrote the film with her partner writer/director Noah Baumbach has said to expect the unexpected.

What is the release date for the Barbie movie?

Barbie will be released on July 21, 2023.

Who is on the Barbie soundtrack?

If the cast list was a who’s who of modern acting royalty, then the soundtrack is rolling out the pink carpet for music’s biggest names.

Dua Lipa is playing double duty, starring in the movie and releasing the first official song.

The soundtrack also features… Ava Max, Charli XCX, Nicki Minaj, Ice Spice, HAIM, Khalid and Ken himself, Ryan Gosling .

Halle Bailey’s ‘Little Mermaid’ Movie Eyeing Huge Box Office Weekend

Halle Bailey ‘s ‘Little Mermaid’ got tons of backlash when it was first announced, but now that it’s out — it seems folks are more curious than angry … ’cause they’re flocking to see it.

Disney’s latest live-action adaptation hit theaters this weekend — a 4-day one at that — and so far, ‘TLM’ is cleaning up in ticket sales … projected to land on a record-setting box office haul, with an estimated $120 mil-$130 mil to its name by the time Monday rolls around.

Box Office: ‘The Little Mermaid’ Sprinting to $125M-Plus Memorial Day Debut https://t.co/B2JKJkBsrt

— The Hollywood Reporter (@THR) May 27, 2023 @THR

Some analysts have the film pegged to make more than $130MM — but Disney’s hedging their bets, saying it’ll probably be closer to $125 MM domestically. Overseas, the movie is said to likely draw an additional $80 mil … so it could hit around $200 mil soon enough.

That’s great for the Mouse House, as this movie reportedly had a budget of about $250 million — so they need this one to continue doing numbers for a bit to turn a profit.

While there’s certainly excitement for the debut weekend, time will tell if Ariel has legs to go the distance in the weeks thereafter. As we reported, “Aladdin” star Mena Massoud recently opined he didn’t think it’d hit a billion like his movie did … which came out pre-pandemic.

Funny enough, with these estimated figures, ‘Mermaid’ is actually on pace to overtake what “Aladdin” achieved in 2019 — and it’s on a new list of Memorial Day weekend titans. If all goes according to plan, ‘TLM’ should sit at fourth behind “Top Gun: Maverick,” “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End,” and “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.”
