Premier League clubs have come under fire after ‘shocking’ evidence undercovered by the BBC showed clubs are regularly flying to domestic away games with the travel plans have a bigger impact on the environment. 100 games were analysed across a two-month period with the data showing that teams flew to 81 matches in that time.

This season, Premier League clubs have often been criticised after players posted photos of them flying to and from games on social media. Ben Chilwell posted evidence that Chelsea had flown the short distance to Leicester earlier this month while Manchester United also flew back from London after their Carabao Cup win over Newcastle last month.

Carbon emissions per kilometre are significantly worse than any other mode of transport with short-haul flights considered to be the worst given the extra fuel burned in taking off and landing. It puts extra strain on the environment and contributes to global warming.

Now, evidence uncovered by the BBC shows the true extent of the problem. The broadcaster analysed 100 games over a two-month period and found Premier League clubs flew to 81 domestic matches in that time. On average each journey took 42 minutes but the shortest journey of the lot was just 27.

The issue is made worst by the number of ‘positioning’ flights required to have suitable aircraft in place. 37 flights of this nature were required with the shortest taking just 17 minutes.

Forest Green Rovers chairman Dale Vince was one of the first to comment on the findings. The League 1 side were the first team in the world to be recognised by the United Nations as carbon neutral while FIFA describes them as ‘greenest team in the world’.

“Shocking data in just two months,” Vince told the BBC . “It’s an illusion to think there is a gain for a flight of that duration, modern coaches are very comfortable and aren’t going to impair the performance of the players over that short distance.”

Vince is not the only person to have his concerns, with Chelsea boss Graham Potter also admitting it was an issue he wanted to see addressed when asked earlier this year.

“I think it’s something we increasingly have to look at because I think it’s something we have to do better with,” he explained. “It’s my personal opinion. That’s not to say it is straightforward because there are factors, but I think it’s an area we can improve.”

Premier League clubs have cited the packed fixture schedule as the key reason for the decision with flying giving players more time to prepare for games. Teams have also suggested that air emissions make up a very small percentage of their carbon output while football flights make up just 0.079% of all domestic flights in the UK.

The Premier League stressed they are in the process of developing a suitable environmental strategy when approached by Express Sport for comment. In the statement they said: “The Premier League recognises the need to take action on climate change and is committed to reducing its overall climate impact. In November 2021, the League joined forces with other leading sports organisations by signing up to the UN Sports for Climate Action Framework. This includes aims to achieve net-zero emissions by 2040.

“The Premier League is in the process of developing an environmental sustainability strategy, which will set out plans to deliver climate action. As part of this strategy, the League will continue to engage with and work alongside clubs and partners, to find practical ways of reducing football’s environmental impact. We will also encourage fans throughout the world to consider how they can contribute to this action and reduce their own carbon footprint.

“Clubs have demonstrated their commitment to positive change in this area and continue to play an important role in raising awareness of the issue among fans, while also working on policies to improve environmental sustainability across their business operations.”

Crystal Palace SACK boss Patrick Vieira after disastrous run of results leaves club in Premier League relegation battle

March 17, 2023 by www.thesun.co.uk Leave a Comment

CRYSTAL PALACE have sacked under-fire manager Patrick Vieira.

The Eagles pulled the trigger after a dreadful run of just one win in their last 14 Premier League matches.

Palace now find themselves in a battle for top-flight survival following Tuesday’s defeat at rivals Brighton.

And the hunt is already underway for Vieira’s replacement, with former goalie Paddy McCarthy taking charge of Sunday’s clash against Arsenal.

According to the Athletic , Vieira was told he was gone in a 7am phone call with chairman Steve Parish while on his way to training.

The bookies say the favourites are former Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez , the ex-Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl and former Spurs manager Nuno Espirito Santo .

Other candidates include Marcelo Bielsa, Michael Carrick and Vincent Kompany.

As well as the Frenchman, the Londoners have also parted ways with coaches Osian Roberts, Kristian Wilson and Said Aigoun.

Chairman Steve Parish said: “It is with enormous regret that this difficult decision has been made.

“Ultimately, results in recent months have placed us in a precarious league position and we felt a change is necessary to give us the best chance of retaining Premier League status.

“That said, Patrick’s impact since joining us in the summer of 2021 has been significant, and he is held in the highest regard by myself, and all of his colleagues.

“He led the team to a Wembley FA Cup semi-final and respectable 12th placed finish last season playing some exciting football, which was a challenging and crucial campaign for the club given the changes we made to the squad prior to his arrival.

“Patrick has given his all to the club, and we all thank him and his team for their service.

“We also wish Patrick, Osian, Kristian and Said the very best for their futures.”

Vieira took charge of 65 Premier League matches with the Eagles and had a 26 per cent win ratio.

Fans had mixed feelings about the sacking, with one calling it a “real shame”.

Another said: “What is the actual point of sacking him now with about 10 games to go?”

While one wrote: “Thank you Patrick but this was the time to go.”

Former Palace star Clinton Morrison this week warned results were not good enough.

He said: “The noises at Selhurst Park from the fans, they’re not happy, obviously, with the results.

A host of Premier League names could be on the move for nothing in the summer with over 70 players approaching the end of their contracts. A range of stars could be available, from exciting young talents to seasoned pros, and they will be ripe for managers to pick and choose on bargain deals.

Three of the biggest standouts on the list are Youri Tielemans, Wilfried Zaha and Ilkay Gundogan. The trio would improve the majority of teams around the world and are already, understandably, the subject of intense speculation.

The Belgian has been heavily linked with both Newcastle and Arsenal while the Crystal Palace man has been tipped to join Cristiano Ronaldo in the Middle East. Meanwhile, Gundogan appears to have emerged as one of Barcelona ’s top targets as the Spanish giants look to keep prices down to comply with financial fairplay regulations.

A variety of other faces are likely to be on the move, however, including a substantial amount of experienced professionals. James Milner’s time at Liverpool is likely to come to an end this summer while Roberto Firmino has already confirmed he will head off for a new challenge.

Former Manchester United centre-back partnership Jonny Evans and Phil Jones can link up again at a new club with both players nearing the end of their deals and Ashley Young could join them if he decides to leave Aston Villa .

However, not everyone on the list may end up leaving their current clubs with some open to extended stays. David de Gea and N’Golo Kante may be among this number with the duo reportedly close to signing extensions with Manchester United and Chelsea respectively.

Here Express Sport has compiled the full list, according to transfermarkt , as managers and sporting directors start to get thinking on their summer players.

Manchester United Owners Await Revised Offers For Premier League Giants | Football News

March 23, 2023 by sports.ndtv.com Leave a Comment

Manchester United’s owners were Thursday awaiting fresh bids from a Qatari banker and British billionaire Jim Ratcliffe after the deadline passed for revised offers to buy the Premier League giants. Reports said bidders were initially told they had until 2100 GMT on Wednesday to submit new bids, but that has now been extended. It is unclear when the new cut-off will be. Sheikh Jassim Bin Hamad Al Thani, the chairman of Qatar Islamic Bank, and Ratcliffe, the founder of chemicals giant INEOS, are the only bidders who have gone public with their intentions.

A first round of bidding took place last month and it has been reported there are as many as eight separate potential investors for the club owned by the American Glazer family, who are deeply unpopular with United supporters.

The BBC said several other proposed investors made their submissions by the Wednesday deadline.

No figures have been revealed but one or more of the initial bids was understood to be in the region of 4.5 billion pounds ($5.5 billion).

That would make Manchester United — who have not won the Premier League for a decade — the most expensive sports club in history, although it would be short of the 6 billion pounds valuation reportedly placed on United by the Glazers.

Sponsored by Vuukle

United’s owners announced in November they were conducting a strategic review, with the sale of the club one option being considered.

Sheikh Jassim is bidding for 100 percent control, aiming to return the club to its “former glories”.

A source close to Sheikh Jassim’s bid told AFP he remains confident his bid is “the best for the club, fans and local community”.

‘Stupid prices’

INEOS chemical company founder Ratcliffe, a boyhood United fan, wants to buy the combined Glazer shareholding of 69 percent of the 20-time English champions.

The 70-year-old told the Wall Street Journal this week he was not interested in paying “stupid prices” in a bidding war for one of football’s most iconic clubs.

Ratcliffe, who already owns French club Nice, said his interest in United would be “purely in winning things”, calling the club a “community asset”, rather than a financial one.

The Glazers have angered many United fans by saddling the club with huge debts since they took over in 2005. They appeared ready to cash out at an enormous profit when they invited external investment in November.

However, they could yet shun the option of selling a controlling stake in the club, with other parties understood to be interested in a minority shareholding.

Ratcliffe visited Old Trafford last week along with INEOS representatives, a day after a delegation from Sheikh Jassim’s group toured the club’s stadium and training ground.

A Qatari purchase of United would boost the sporting profile of the Gulf state months after it hosted the 2022 World Cup, but it would also be controversial.

Sheikh Jassim is the son of a former Qatari prime minister, raising concerns over the potential growth of state influence in the Premier League.

Premier League champions Manchester City’s fortunes have been transformed since a takeover from Sheikh Mansour, a member of Abu Dhabi’s ruling family, in 2008.

In 2021, the Saudi sovereign wealth fund bought a controlling stake in Newcastle.

Amnesty International has called on the Premier League to tighten ownership rules to ensure they are “not an opportunity for more sportswashing”.

If Sheikh Jassim’s bid succeeds, it would also raise the question of whether Qatar is shifting its attentions away from Paris Saint-Germain, currently home to the trio of Lionel Messi , Neymar and Kylian Mbappe , who were bought by Qatari investors in 2011.

United, three-time European champions, have not won the Premier League since Alex Ferguson led them to a 20th English title in his final season before retiring in 2013.

Listen to the latest songs , only on JioSaavn.com

But they are enjoying a renaissance under Erik ten Hag’s management this season and ended a six-year trophy drought by lifting the League Cup last month.

Five ex-Premier League free agents Wrexham’s Ryan Reynolds could sign to join Ben Foster

National League leaders Wrexham have pulled off a major transfer coup with the signing of former Manchester United, Birmingham, West Brom and Watford goalkeeper Ben Foster on a short-term deal after convincing the veteran to come out of retirement until the end of the season.

It’s the latest impressive chapter of Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney’s Hollywood story in Wales as the pair seek to propel the Red Dragons back into the Football League.

Although the National League transfer deadline is now imminent, there are a whole host of other free agents with Premier League experience that are still yet to find a club.

With that in mind, Express Sport analyses five free agents Wrexham could hypothetically sign either now or in the summer to draw even more eyes to their box-office project.

Danny Rose

This would be a statement signing given Rose was arguably the best left-back in the Premier League just six or so years ago.

While he has evidently gone off the boil since having struggled at Watford last season, the 32-year-old still has more to give and could easily play higher than the National League providing he was able to avoid injuries.

Coincidentally, Rose has actually been training with another National League side in recent weeks in the form of York City.

It’s unclear whether a potential transfer is on the cards but the move shows Rose is still trying to continue his footballing career, even if offers have been few and far between.

His wage demands are likely to be excessive though given what he previously earned at Tottenham.

Tom Carroll

The former Tottenham attacking midfielder is yet to find a new club since leaving Ipswich Town at the end of last season having made 17 appearances in all competitions for the Tractor Boys.

Carroll is vastly experienced having also played in the Premier League with Swansea City before dropping down to the Championship with Queens Park Rangers.

The 30-year-old also has Europa League experience having scored his first competitive goal in a 4-1 win over Monaco.

Nonetheless, maintaining his fitness has been a struggle due to various injuries but having featured 17 times for England’s Under-21s during the early stages of his career, there is no denying his technical quality.

Danny Drinkwater

Drinkwater has been without a club since being released by Chelsea last summer having spent last season on loan at Championship side Reading.

He enjoyed a reasonably successful stint with The Royals, playing 32 times in Berkshire throughout the 2021/22 campaign following spells with Burnley, Aston Villa and Kasimpasa in Turkey.

It would suggest the industrious central midfielder, who won the 2015/2016 Premier League title with Leicester, is still capable of playing a lot of games – a natural requirement in the National League.

The 33-year-old spent time training with Reading again last summer in pre-season but never re-joined the Championship outfit, meaning he is still free to sign for another club.

Jordon Ibe

Incredibly, the former Liverpool winger is still only 27 meaning he still has plenty of years left in the tank if he wishes to continue his football career.

The tricky attacker has had a tough time off the field and that has been reflected by his sad demise having once been tipped for a very bright future at Anfield.

Ibe last played for Adanaspor in Turkey after joining the club from Derby County but he has not played regularly since the 2018/19 season with Bournemouth.

Nonetheless, his tricky dribbling and Premier League experience could still prove to be a real asset for any side willing to take a chance on him, providing they can get Ibe back up to speed.

AFC Bournemouth Training Session

Fraizer Campbell

Campbell was once a hot prospect during his time at Manchester United and he has also scored goals in the top-flight with Sunderland, Cardiff City and Crystal Palace.

The veteran striker is still without a club having played for Huddersfield Town in the Championship last season where he made 19 appearances for the Terries before their play-off final defeat to Nottingham Forest.

The 35-year-old’s game is built upon work rate in the final third and he could prove to be a great striker partner for 40-goal Wrexham frontman Paul Mullin.

Any move obviously seems very unlikely though but from a hypothetical standpoint, Campbell would most likely rip up the National League should he get the chance to feature.
