MLB would not charge Oakland Athletics a relocation fee if team moves to Las Vegas, per reports

Major League Baseball is reportedly willing to waive its relocation fee for the Oakland Athletics if they move the franchise to Las Vegas, Nevada, according to the New York Post .

In what’s undoubtedly a coincidence and certainly not an attempt to gain additional leverage, that rumor has surfaced just days before the San Francisco Bay Conservation and Development Commission is scheduled to vote on Thursday on removing a port priority use designation on the Howard Terminal site, the location the Athletics have been eyeing for a waterfront stadium, among other mixed-use developments.

The relocation fee is a standard piece of sports business. As noted by the Post, the National Football League charged the Rams and Chargers more than $600 million to move to Los Angeles, and later docked the Raiders nearly $400 million to move to Las Vegas themselves. The National Basketball Association hasn’t had a team move in more than a decade, but had the last ones to do so pay a $30 million toll in the process.

MLB has also had remarkable consistency with its franchise locations. The Montreal Expos are the only team to relocate to another state since 1971. The threat of relocation has, nevertheless, served as an effective lubricant in several markets whenever the league has needed to grease the wheels for publicly financed stadiums. As CBS Sports noted in 2019 :

One tried-and-true method teams use to land stadiums is threatening to move elsewhere if they don’t succeed. With MLB angling for new homes for the Rays and Oakland Athletics (and saying expansion won’t occur until after those teams are squared away), and beginning the process for the Diamondbacks and Los Angeles Angels , maintaining a vacancy in a viable market could pay dividends. To the untrained eye, such an approach appears nonsensical, a waste of fertile soil. But the NFL did something similar with Los Angeles over that city’s 20-year absence from professional football. “One of the things that helped NFL teams immensely over the last generation, until just the last couple of years, was having Los Angeles open,” said Michael Leeds, the chair of the economics department at Temple University. “Any team that wanted to renegotiate the stadium deal, or wanted a new facility built — all they had to do was mention the words Los Angeles, and the city would have to take notice.”

The Las Vegas Review-Journal not only confirmed The Post’s report , but elaborated on the aforementioned upcoming vote on the Howard Terminal site. The Athletics’ plan requires 18 of the 27 commissioners to vote in favor of removing the port use designation — an action that local agriculture stakeholders have pushed back against . Should the Athletics fall short of that vote mark, the project could be dead.

Bay Area favorite Sliver Pizza is expanding to Lafayette

June 27, 2022 by www.sfgate.com Leave a Comment

Sliver Pizza has its eyes set on Lafayette.

The popular East Bay restaurant is expected to debut a new storefront in La Fiesta Square, located at 975 Moraga Rd., as first reported by the Bay Area News Group . An official opening date has yet to be announced.

Sliver Pizza is listed under La Fiesta Square’s restaurants page but doesn’t include any details other than the pizzeria is “coming soon.” SFGATE reached out to both Sliver Pizza and La Fiesta Square for comment but did not hear back by the time of publication.

In May, the owners of Sliver Pizza applied for a type 47 liquor license and, as of Monday, the application is still pending with the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control. If approved, the pizzeria will serve beers and wines, as it does across its other three Bay Area locations. The upcoming restaurant in Lafayette will be the fourth eatery for Sliver Pizza, which has recently expanded to four total outposts.

Sliver Pizza opened a restaurant in Oakland last year and another in Danville in February. The restaurant also has two locations in Berkeley. Founded in 2013 by Cheese Board Pizza alum Willy Perez, Sliver Pizza has slung single, seasonally focused vegetarian pies (much like Cheese Board Pizza does) ever since.

Controversial fast food giant Chick-fil-A is coming to Emeryville

June 28, 2022 by www.sfchronicle.com Leave a Comment

Chick-fil-A plans to bring its fried chicken sandwiches and waffle fries to Emeryville.

The fast food chain has applied for permits to open a store at 1525 40th St., taking over the former Panera Bread, according to Sheri Hartz, public information officer for the city of Emeryville. Located within the popular shopping center next to a Target, the Emeryville location would be the controversial chain’s closest restaurant to Oakland and among the closest to San Francisco.

It was unclear when the East Bay location would open. Representatives from Chick-fil-A did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The E’ville Eye first reported the planned Emeryville location. According to Hartz, the restaurant will not have a drive-thru but is expected to have an outdoor seating area.

Since 2012, the fast food chain has faced backlash for its donations to anti-LGBTQ+ groups , such as the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and the Salvation Army, and its CEO Dan Cathy saying he believes marriage should be between a man and a woman. There are 21 locations in the Bay Area.

Despite reportedly claiming it would stop giving donations to these organizations, tax filings in 2017 revealed the company kept donating to discriminatory groups. People have since protested outside of new locations across the country, including in the Bay Area .

The fast food chain faced hurdles in 2019 and 2021 when it was in the process of opening locations in Redwood City and Castro Valley , respectively. The Castro Valley location never opened, but the Redwood City restaurant drew long lines when it eventually debuted.

JP Sears holds A’s scoreless over five-plus innings as Yankees beat Oakland to pick up 55th victory of season

June 28, 2022 by www.denverpost.com Leave a Comment

The Yankees came into the season knowing that pitching depth would be a determining factor for them. Last night, they dipped into and tested it. JP Sears passed with flying colors. The left-hander pitched just over five scoreless innings in his second major-league start as the Bombers beat the A’s, 2-1, at the Stadium.

The Yankees (55-20) have won three straight and clinched the best-of-three game series. They have won 19 of 23 completed series and split two. The A’s (25-51) have lost six of their last eight.

Sears has pitched 12.2 innings in the big leagues without giving up a run. The 26-year old scattered three hits, walked one and struck out one.

“We put him on the 40 man roster in the offseason because of performance and what we thought he could be, but the fact that he’s stepped up big for us here early to be an option (is something) we feel really good about,” Aaron Boone said.

Marwin Gonzalez hit his third homer off the season and Jose Trevino singled in a run to provide the offense against the A’s ace Frankie Montas.

But Tuesday night was a real test of the Yankees’ pitching depth. Looking to manage their rotation’s workload, they used Sears as a spot starter in this stretch of 20 games in 20 days.

“This season is going to be a little more of a challenge with the shorter spring and not having the normal offseason with eyes on players. So everyone’s going to be tested,” Boone said. “We will, I am sure, continue to be and you continue to try to fortify it with good options.”

There were a concerning number of pitchers injuries in 2021 with pitchers coming off COVID pandemic—abbreviated 2020 season. The concerns were raised again when the owner’s lockout pushed back and shortened spring training this year, leaving most pitchers to ramp up on their own.

Matt Blake, the Yankees pitching coach, said this spring that getting pitchers through July and August, traditionally a time of arm fatigue, would be a challenge this season, This stretch of 20 games in 20 days, however, was a mini-stress test for the Bombers. They have to be proactive because they have some workload concerns in the rotation and the bullpen.

Luis Severino, who has pitched 72 innings so far this season, pitched just 27 over the last three years because of injuries. Nestor Cortes, who has never pitched more than 93 innings in the big leagues, has already thrown 79 this year. The lefty probably could go to 140 with a normal buildup. Michael King, who pitched 1.1 scoreless Tuesday night, has already blown past his 22 appearances from 2021 and has 41.2 innings pitched in the 26 appearances this season. He threw a total of 69 innings last season. Clay Holmes, who allowed a run but picked up his 13th save, has thrown 35.2 innings this season, nearly half of the 70 he threw last year.

The relievers’ workload has been affected by injuries. Aroldis Chapman, who has been on the injured list for more than a month with an Achilles issue, pitched a perfect inning in Triple-A Tuesday night and is expected back in the bullpen as soon as today. Jonathan Loaisiga is also expected back at some point before the All-Star break to help ease that bullpen load.

Domingo German, who threw 3.1 scoreless innings for Double-A Somerset on Tuesday, is also expected to come back and help the load management for both the starters and relievers. He threw 43 pitches, scattered two hits and struck out three Tuesday.

Clarke Schmidt was scheduled to start Thursday for Triple-A. He made 14 appearances with the big-league club, including a start. He pitched to a 3.00 ERA and a 1.167 WHIP.

“Obviously we got Clarke down right now. He’s gonna get built up a little bit. And we feel like Clark’s made big strides this year, too,” Boone said.

Lefty Ken Waldichuk, who has a 1.99 ERA and 88 strikeouts in 58.2 innings over 12 Triple-A starts, and right-hander Hayden Wesneski, who has 55 strikeouts in 65 innings and a 4.02 ERA and 1.14 WHIP in 14 Triple-A appearances, have both put themselves on the Yankees, radar.

“So, always looking to fortify and keep that reservoir going to where you’re going to have to tap into some things at different points over the year,” Boone said.

LCD Soundsystem kicked off their six-night residency at London’s Brixton Academy last night, where the James Murphy-led group performed a set of their biggest hits.

The concert included renditions of “New York, I Love You But You’re Bringing Me Down,” “Dance Yrself Clean,” “Daft Punk Is Playing At My House,” and “Losing My Edge.” It closed with a raucous rendition of “All My Friends.”

LCD Soundsystem will perform five more nights in London, with further residencies planned for Oakland and San Francisco in August. The group will join Rosalía, James Blake, and Flume for III Points Festivals , set for October 21-22 in Miami.

Murphy and crew made their live comeback last year with a multi-night residency at Brooklyn Steel in New York, and have continued performing this year. The group released their last studio album, American Dream, in 2017. They also dropped an Electric Lady Sessions live record in 2019.

In March, Murphy wrote a lengthy Facebook post detailing how the group is “reluctant” to get back into an album-tour-break cycle. “We really wanted to stop living like that,” he wrote, referring to the non-stop tour cycle. “We talked about just playing some shows in New York, since most of us live here, and not making it too big of a deal. Like, just playing because we like it and because we like one another. Just be a New York band for a bit. And maybe we’ll do something like that every year. Just stay in shape, if that makes sense.”
