‘I thought the plane was going to explode’: Emergency door opened mid-air during Korean flight

May 26, 2023 by www.abc.net.au Leave a Comment

South Korean police have detained a man who opened the door of an Asiana Airlines plane minutes before it was due to land in the city of Daegu, causing panic among the passengers.

Key points:

  • A male passenger allegedly opened the emergency door when the plane was 200 metres off the ground
  • Footage from inside the plane shows wind rushing in to the cabin
  • Nine passengers, all teenagers, were sent to hospital after suffering breathing issues

The Airbus A321-200 plane landed safely at around 12:40pm local time.

It had set off from the holiday island of Jeju an hour earlier, the airport’s flight schedule showed.

Nine passengers, all teenagers, were sent to hospital after suffering breathing issues, a Daegu fire department official said.

“I thought the plane was going to explode … It looked like passengers next to the open door were fainting,” an unidentified 44-year-old passenger told the Yonhap News Agency.

The passenger said the cabin crew had made an in-flight announcement asking if there were any doctors on board.

A video, reported to have been shot by a passenger, showed the moments before the landing, with a door open and wind rushing in as passengers sat nearby.

The passengers included teenage athletes on their way to a track and field competition.

Some screamed and cried in panic, Yonhap News Agency reported, citing their unidentified coach.

Yonhap quoted other passengers as saying they had suffered severe ear pain after the door opened.

It said some cabin crew shouted for help from passengers to prevent the door from being opened.

Korea’s transport ministry said in a statement police had taken into custody the man who had opened the door, and authorities were investigating violations of aviation safety laws.

A transport ministry official told Reuters that authorities were looking into whether Asiana Airlines had followed protocols to manage emergency exits.

The official said it was possible to open the emergency exit when the aircraft was near the ground as the pressure inside and outside the cabin were similar.

The plane was about 200 metres in the air and two or three minutes away from landing when the passenger, who was sitting next to the emergency exit, opened a cover and pulled a lever so the door opened, an Asiana spokesperson said.

All onboard were seated with their seat belts fastened because the plane was about to land, the spokesperson said.

After the incident, pictures showed an open emergency door near the plane’s left wing and a deployed escape slide ripped away from it.

Sohn Myong-hwan, a professor at South Korea’s Sehan University’s aviation maintenance department, said it would be difficult for the airline to avoid potential responsibility in the case.

“It is particularly dangerous during landing and take-off, so someone from the flight staff should have stopped that passenger,” he said.

Man who opened Asiana plane door in mid-air tells police he did it because he was ‘uncomfortable’

May 27, 2023 by www.abc.net.au Leave a Comment

A passenger on an Asiana Airlines flight reportedly told police he opened a door on the plane minutes before it landed in Daegu, South Korea, because he was “uncomfortable”.

Key points:

  • The man, who opened the door 213 metres above ground, told police he was stressed after losing his job
  • Police plan to arrest the detained man after investigations conclude
  • A video showed a door open and wind rushing in as passengers sat nearby

The man, in his 30s, told police he “wanted to get off the plane quickly”, Yonhap News Agency reported, citing the Daegu Dongbu Police Station.

He also told police he was stressed after losing his job recently.

Reuters could not immediately reach police at the station.

The man opened the door during the flight on Friday when the plane was about 213 metres above the ground, causing panic onboard.

Nine passengers were sent to the hospital with breathing issues. All were dismissed from the hospital after about two hours, a fire department official said.

Police sought an arrest warrant for the detained man on Saturday for violating the Aviation Security Act and other offences, Yonhap reported.

Officials gave the man’s surname as Lee but not his full name, as is the usual custom.

Jin Seong-hyun, a former Korean Air cabin safety official, said that as far has he knew, this case was unprecedented, but that passengers have opened emergency exits without authorisation while the plane is on the ground.

Asiana Airlines: Man Arrested After Opening Plane Door Mid-Air

Topline

South Korean police on Friday have reportedly arrested a man who opened a jet’s emergency exit during a flight, with video footage from the flight showing panicked passengers gripping their armrests as they were buffeted by wind tearing through the cabin.

Key Facts

Officials said a passenger opened an emergency exit on an Asiana Airlines flight as it was preparing to land in the South Korean city of Daegu, according to news reports.

Local police said they had arrested a man who confessed to opening a door mid-flight but would not say why he had done so, according to CNN.

A total of 200 people were on board the flight, including 194 passengers, among whom were 48 elementary and middle school athletes on their way to compete in a national sports event, according to news agency Yonhap.

Video footage— reportedly shot by a passenger and shown on television—showed passengers sitting gripping their armrests with wind rushing in through the open doorway as the plane came in to land.

As the plane was minutes away from landing, all onboard were reportedly seated with their seatbelts fastened, a company spokesperson told Reuters.

Nobody was sucked out of or fell out of the plane or were seriously injured in the incident, officials said, though 12 passengers suffered breathing difficulties from hyperventilating, nine of whom were taken to hospital.

What To Watch For

South Korea’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport said police and ministry officials are investigating the arrested man for breaking aviation law, CNN reported . The transport ministry told Reuters it is also investigating whether Asiana Airlines followed the correct protocols to manage emergency exits.

Key Background

It’s normally impossible to open a plane door mid-flight and it is especially rare to see incidents like this. Almost all such incidents will happen when a plane is on the ground or in the process of taking off or landing as both physics and airplane design stop it from happening at high altitudes. Mostly, this is to do with the fact that jets maintain a higher air pressure than their surroundings when high up, which seals the door in place. Jet doors open inwards to take advantage of this and should this seal somehow break at altitude, the cabin’s contents—passengers and most of the air included—would be sucked toward the opening and possibly thrown forcibly from the plane.

Novak Djokovic has extra French Open ‘fuel’ thanks to Rafael Nadal but faces two threats

Novak Djokovic has been told that Rafael Nadal ’s absence from the French Open could give him the boost he needs to make history. John McEnroe believes Djokovic will be fuelled by the chance to overtake Nadal and make Grand Slam history. But the American tennis legend also believes there are two stars who could threaten the Serb’s hopes, naming Carlos Alcaraz and Holger Rune as title favourites.

The upcoming French Open is set to be the most open in years for the men, with 14-time champion Nadal absent due to injury. Djokovic has also cast some doubts about his form coming into Paris, as this season marks the first since 2018 that he has yet to lift a title on the clay ahead of Roland Garros.

While the world No 3 has not met his usual exceedingly-high standards during the clay swing – failing to get beyond the quarter-final stage of any event – McEnroe believes he has received the fuel he needs to lift the trophy in Paris. “It’s his quest to be the best ever and win the most Majors so right now it looks like he’s the only guy left who could break more records,” he told Eurosport .

“He’s tied with Rafa so this is an opening. He’s had a tough year and a half in a lot of ways and he’s also done some incredible things. Novak, he’s always looking for some inspiration, some fuel, and he’s got some now and he’s got a great chance.”

But the seven-time Major champion has also warned Djokovic that there are two players who could ruin his chances of lifting a third trophy at Roland Garros – especially with Nadal’s absence leaving the “door more open for any player that wants to win this tournament”.

He continued: “It’s much more open, you have Novak who’s won it twice, and then it becomes much more wide open after that. So, I think from that standpoint, it’s exciting.” And he gave Djokovic a stark reminder that the Big Three era is coming to an end, explaining how Alcaraz and Rune have been able to do something that Alexander Zverev’s generation couldn’t.

“We’re approaching obviously the end of an era. I mean, this has been going on for 15 years, if not longer, so it’s unbelievable, but everything at some point ends,” the retired pro said. “Novak is 36 now and he seems to be incredible for the most part and his body still seems to be able to do what he wants, but at some point, you think in the near future, that’s going to change. It’s just a question of how long can you keep going, that’s why you’re seeing young guys, finally…”

Naming Alcaraz as his pick to win the French Open, McEnroe also thought that Rune was up there, with the Dane recently beating Djokovic in Rome. He added: “It’s taken almost a generation and skipped like all these people that didn’t win much like Zverev, [Daniil] Medvedev won one, [Dominic] Thiem won one. There’s a lot of guys that didn’t win any you know, now you got these 20-year-olds in Alcaraz and Rune, who’s the next guy, I pick him as the third or fourth guy ahead of these other guys.

“The young bucks are finally starting to emerge, but you have to wait and see if they’re mentally ready to you know, Alcaraz proved he was at the US Open but now you have to see if Rune is capable of making that step to win something like this, but right now if you asked me, I would say Alcaraz would be the slight favourite to win this.”

Rafael Nadal backed to copy Andy Murray as Spaniard’s French Open reign finally over

Rafael Nadal

John McEnroe has assessed Rafael Nadal ’s comeback hopes after the Spaniard revealed that 2024 would likely be his last year on the tour. Nadal is missing the French Open – where he is a 14-time champion – for the first time in his career. And McEnroe said that Nadal’s farewell lap of honour could see him end up like Andy Murray .

Nadal stunned the tennis world when he announced his withdrawal from the French Open last week. The 36-year-old has continued to struggle with a psoas injury he picked up in January, and will now spend several months away from the tennis court.

The 22-time Major champion also said he will try to return pain-free in 2024, for what he expects to be his last season on the tour. “My idea is to try and say goodbye to all the important tournaments for me in my career,” Nadal said during a press conference at his Mallorcan academy.

With the Spaniard now on the sidelines for the foreseeable future, McEnroe has assessed Nadal’s chances during his farewell tour and questioned whether he can return to his best. “It’s unfortunate obviously but it does open the door and I think it’s inevitable,” the American told Eurosport .

“They say Father Time wins every time, and that’s what’s happened here. I’m sure that Rafa did everything he could to try to play and this is not the way he wants it to end so that’s why he’s talked about playing next yea

The seven-time Major champion also brought up Murray, who announced his retirement at the 2019 Australian Open before undergoing hip resurfacing surgery and returning to competition. He continued: “Whatever Rafa wants to do is something that we should respect and any player…you watch Murray play, he’s not the same player that he was and not nearly as highly ranked, but he wants to go out on his own terms and I’m sure it’ll be the same with Rafa.”

But the retired pro still refused to rule Nadal out of winning next year’s French Open given his record in Paris. “I would never say that he couldn’t win at Roland-Garros. Anyone that’s done what he’s done, as long as he stepped foot on a court would have a great chance,” McEnroe said.

And he made another comparison, adding: “He reminds me a lot of LeBron James. LeBron James is a little bit older and is part of a team, but I think he proved he was still a fantastic player.

“But you know, maybe at the end of those [season-end] games he got a little tired because too much was expected from him. And at some point, that’s what’s gonna happen to Rafa, it happens to everybody, you’re going to be asking too much.

“So it’s hard to know, at this point. By the time he [Nadal] plays next year, if he plays, he’d be 38 years old during the tournament.”
