Week 5 of the Pac-12’s college football season kicks off on Friday night when the No. 10 Utah Utes and No. 19 Oregon State Beavers square off at Reser Stadium in Corvallis, Ore. The Utes (4-0, 1-0 in Pac-12) are coming off a 14-7 victory over No. 22 UCLA. They are one of five undefeated teams in the conference. Meanwhile, the Beavers (3-1, 0-1) are looking to bounce back after their first loss of the season, a 38-35 setback at Washington State. Why Oregon State can cover

Reser Stadium has been a difficult place for opponents to play recently. The Beavers have won six straight and 13 of their last 14 home games entering Friday night’s matchup. The six-game home winning streak is the ninth-longest active streak in the country. Oregon State hasn’t lost at Reser since Week 4 last year to No. 7 USC , 17-14.

In addition, the Beavers have a highly effective rushing attack. Oregon State is averaging 224.8 rushing yards per game, which ranks second in the Pac-12 and ninth in the country. Running back Damien Martinez is fifth in the nation in rushing yards per carry (7.58). See which team to pick here .

Why Utah can cover

The Utes have one of the best defenses in the country. Utah leads the Pac-12 and ranks sixth in the country in scoring defense (9.5 points per game). The unit also ranks ninth in the nation in total defense (263.8 yards per game). Last week, the Utes gave up just seven points and 243 yards to No. 22 UCLA in a 14-7 victory.

One of the reasons for Utah’s success on defense has been defensive end Jonah Elliss . A son of Utes defensive tackles coach Luther Elliss, the younger Elliss leads the country in sacks (5.5). He is coming off a career day against the Bruins, in which he had 3.5 sacks and five tackles for loss. See which team to pick here .

College football predictions, picks, odds: Texas vs. Kansas, Utah vs. Oregon State among Week 5 value plays

September 28, 2023 by www.cbssports.com Leave a Comment

USATSI

Week 5 of the college football season means that conference play is in full swing. Almost every team will have played at least one conference game by the end of the weekend and league play will define each team’s success from here until rivalry weekend.

There are a few games in Week 5 that have major conference implications. No. 19 Oregon State is trying to keep its Pac-12 hopes alive against No. 10 Utah . The Beavers are coming off a loss against No. 16 Washington State , and can hardly afford to start 0-2 in conference play if they want to stay in the race.

No. 3 Texas and No. 24 Kansas are two of three undefeated teams left in the Big 12, but something has to give this weekend. South Carolina travels to No. 21 Tennessee in a key SEC East clash. The Gamecocks stunned the Vols last season, and killed Tennessee’s College Football Playoff hopes, with a 63-38 win. There should be plenty of animosity between the two.

There’s a ton of value to be found in these games. After a blazing hot start to this weekly column, we went 1-4 last week. Many thanks to No. 5 Florida State for taking care of business against Clemson and preventing a total wash. Week 5 is a good opportunity to get back above .500 for the year.

Week 4 Season

1-4

5-5

Here are the value plays that bettors should keep an eye on during Week 5 of the college football season.

Odds via SportsLine consensus | All times Eastern

No. 10 Utah at No. 19 Oregon State

When: Friday, 9 p.m. | Where: Reser Stadium — Corvallis, Oregon

Injury concerns may make bettors anxious about laying money on Utah. Quarterback Cam Rising’s status is still in the air. Tight end Brant Kuithe , the Utes’ best offensive weapon, has yet to even dress out this year. The running back room is super thin, with starter Ja’Quinden Jackson dealing with nagging ankle issues and No. 2 option Micah Bernard on the shelf. And yet, even with this offensive injury plague, the Utes are 4-0. Their defense is top-shelf, good enough to win any game on its own. The offense is far from explosive — or even productive — but it does a good job of taking care of the ball and prolonging drives to help the defense out a bit. Utah keeps finding ways to win against really strong opponents. Pound the Utes money line now because if Rising’s return is announced, this line will shift on a dime. Prediction: Utah ML (+139)

Cincinnati at BYU

When: Friday, 10:15 p.m. | Where: LaVell Edwards Stadium — Provo, Utah

It’s downright peculiar that Cincinnati is favored in this matchup. It would be one thing if the Bearcats were the home team, but they have to travel over 1,000 miles to play in one of the most underrated venues in all of college football. And this isn’t the same Cincinnati team we’re used to. The Bearcats lost to Miami (OH) and only put six points on the board, at home, against an Oklahoma team that gave them every opportunity to score. BYU, in the last two weeks, beat Arkansas on the road and hung around with Kansas before the Jayhawks pulled away near the end. Take the Cougars’ on the money line. It provides a little bit more value than picking BYU to cover a paltry 2-point spread. Prediction: BYU ML (+112)

No. 24 Kansas at No. 3 Texas

When: Saturday, 3:30 p.m. | Where: Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium — Austin, Texas

Texas has done nothing but take care of business this year. Some expected Baylor to put up a fight last week, but the Longhorns walked out of McLane Stadium with a 32-point win. This line is also almost certainly inflated by Texas’ 17-4 record against the Jayhawks. Two of those Kansas wins have come in the last seven years, though. The last time these two teams met in Austin, Kansas got a thrilling overtime win. As evidenced by its placement in the AP Top 25, Kansas has grown a lot since then. It’s the Big 12’s most experienced team with one of college football’s best all around players in Jalon Daniels . Texas will win, but the Jayhawks are good enough to make it a lot closer than the spread suggests. Prediction: Kansas +16.5 (-110)

South Carolina at No. 21 Tennessee

When: Saturday, 7:30 p.m. | Where: Neyland Stadium — Knoxville, Tennessee

This has all the makings of a track meet. South Carolina’s offense has been inconsistent this year. The running game is almost nonexistent and the offensive line has had its fair share of struggles when it comes to pass blocking. Spencer Rattler is a special talent, and has covered up a lot of issues by himself. The emergence of wide receiver Xavier Legette , who leads the FBS with 556 receiving yards in four games, helps. Those two should feast against a Tennessee secondary that still consistently underperforms. In similar fashion, Tennessee’s talented stable of running backs will have a big day against a Gamecock run defense that ranks eighth in the SEC. South Carolina allows more yards per game (434.5) and yards per play (6.02) than any other team in the conference. Expect a lot of points, which means the over should hit without much of a sweat. Prediction: Over 63.5 (-110)

No. 7 Washington at Arizona

When: Saturday, 10 p.m. | Where: Arizona Stadium — Tucson, Arizona

Good teams win, but great teams cover. Washington is a phenomenal team. The Huskies are 4-0 on the year and 3-1 against the spread. They’re winning by an average of just under 33 points per game. That includes two blowout wins against power conference competition and a 37-point rout against Mountain West Conference power Boise State , a trendy preseason pick to upset Washington.  Arizona has been a disappointment this year. Its power-conference game results leave a lot to be desired. The Wildcats lost to Mississippi State and beat Stanford — the No. 105 team in CBS Sports’ ranking of all 133 FBS programs — by a single point. Bettors may balk at an 18.5-point spread, especially on the road, but Washington is more than capable of covering. Prediction: Washington -18.5 (-110)

The Six Pack: Notre Dame vs. Duke, Texas vs. Kansas among top Week 5 college football picks

September 28, 2023 by www.cbssports.com Leave a Comment

USATSI

In a video clip that went viral, Oregon coach Dan Lanning Lanning was seen telling his team, “[Colorado] is playing for clicks. We’re playing for wins,” in his pregame speech before the Ducks faced the Buffaloes on Saturday.  It was great because it played not only to the moment but also to the opponent, and the best speeches do both.

Then his team backed up the talk, blowing the doors off Colorado . The Ducks led 35-0 at halftime, and as he was being interviewed going off the field, Lanning made it clear that they weren’t done. He talked like a coach who intended to make it as emphatic a victory as possible.

There’s been a lot of discourse about the game in the media this week, as there is with everything Deion Sanders and the Buffs. I don’t care about any of it. It’s all noise designed to kill time and keep your attention before the next round of games begins. What I care about is that Dan Lanning lied directly to my face.

Oregon didn’t play like a team trying to send a message in the second half. The Ducks only scored one touchdown in the second half, winning 42-6. Well, this column had the Oregon team total over 45.5 for the game, and I cannot believe it didn’t win.

When a team scores 35 points in the first half, it causes you to feel pretty good about your over 45.5. I thought the win was in the bag, but Lanning called off the dogs (or the Ducks, in this case). Oregon moved at a slower tempo on offense and removed key starters. All of this is within his right, but I can’t help but feel like Lanning owes me, and all of you who took my advice, an apology.

It proved to be the difference between a winning week and a 3-3 performance for The Process.

Odds via SportsLine consensus

Games of the Week

No. 11 Notre Dame at No. 17 Duke : The Irish lost a heartbreaker at home to Ohio State last week but played very well in defeat despite an inability to count. In fact, I would say Notre Dame was the better of the two teams for most of the night, but Ohio State made plays in the end and stole the win out from under the Irish. But the loss has no impact on how I feel about the Irish going forward, and I like them a lot in this spot on the road against a good Duke team.

As odd as it is to say it, considering this is Duke football we’re talking about, the Blue Devils are slightly overrated. I think back to the win against Clemson to start the season, and while Duke deserved its win, I saw the outcome being more about Clemson giving the game away than Duke taking it. As they prepare to face Notre Dame, I wonder if the Irish will do the same. I don’t think they will. Notre Dame did one of the best jobs I’ve ever seen a defense do of limiting Emeka Egbuka and Marvin Harrison (nobody can stop them; you can only hope to mitigate the damage). This secondary should keep the Duke passing game in check. On the other side, my thought is that Notre Dame can use its offensive line to lean on Duke’s defense and wear them down over the course of 60 minutes. If Duke wins this game — and it can — it will be because Riley Leonard balls out. That is well within the realm of possibility, but I don’t think it’s the more likely outcome. The Pick: Notre Dame -5.5 (-110)

No. 24 Kansas at No. 3 Texas : Let’s all stop to take this moment in. The Kansas Jayhawks are being featured in a Game of the Week (not to mention Duke). Imagine somebody telling you this would happen two years ago. You’d never believe it, but here we are, and here they are. Will they win this game? I’m not sure, but that’s not the angle I’m playing. Whoever wins, there’s a strong chance we’ll see a lot of points in this one.

Kansas has improved up front defensively, but it hasn’t faced an offensive line as strong as Texas’ yet, and we’re going to see the Jayhawks secondary tested because of it. Conversely, Kansas’ offense is confusing and designed to get defenders out of their spots to create big plays. Based on what I’ve seen from Texas’ secondary this year, I like Kansas’ chances of breaking big plays. Plus, while Jalon Daniels is seen as a more effective rusher than a passer at the QB position, he’s improved as a passer this year. The winner of this game might need at least 40 to feel comfortable. The Pick: Over 61.5 (-110)

Lock of the Week

San Diego State at Air Force : Over the years, there’s been one thing about San Diego State that you could always rely on. The Aztecs would stop the run and be salty as hell on defense. This has not been the case in 2023. San Diego State’s rush defense ranks 130th nationally in success rate against the run and 125th in EPA per rush. The 2.62 yards it allows before contact ranks 116th. None of San Diego State’s first four FBS opponents have finished with fewer than 111 yards rushing, and that was Ohio in the opener. The Bobcats lost their starting QB during the game and were an absolute mess. UCLA , Oregon State and Boise State have rushed for 686 yards and seven touchdowns against this defense the last three weeks.

And now here comes Air Force! A team that runs the ball 94% of the time, ranks fifth in rushing success rate and 11 in EPA per rush. I can’t see how that would be a problem for San Diego State, can you? Air Force isn’t a juggernaut defensively, but the Aztecs pair their terrible run defense with an anemic offense. This is an absolute nightmare matchup for the Aztecs. The Pick: Air Force -10.5 (-107)

Under of the Week

No. 2 Michigan at Nebraska : The total is low, but I’m riding the Michigan Under Train until it’s derailed. This team continues to move at a snail’s pace and does not seem interested in scoring a lot of points. As I told you last week, when we took the under in Michigan’s game against Rutgers , nobody was averaging fewer snaps per game than Michigan at 112. After playing 105 snaps (61 on offense) in that game, the average on the season has dropped to 110.25. It remains the lowest number in the country, six fewer than anybody else ( Bowling Green , which played Michigan, is at 116.25).

Nebraska hasn’t been moving at a lightning pace, as it ranks 46th in snaps per game, but what’s more important than the number is how many have been on offense. The Huskers have been on offense for 48.75% of their snaps, which ranks 100th overall. This leads me to believe that, even on the road, Michigan will dictate the pace of this game. It’s the better team, and it’s trying to. Plus, how many points can we realistically expect Nebraska to score here? It’s an offense that ranks 90th or worse in nearly every category I care about. All Michigan cares about is getting the win and saving itself for Penn State and Ohio State, so it’ll be more than happy to squeeze the life out of this game in the second half. The Pick: Under 39 (-110)

Get Right Game of the Week

Clemson at Syracuse : Clemson is a distressed asset. The Tigers are off to an 0-2 start in the ACC and just blew a big chance at home last week against Florida State . It’s a team being written off, and now it’s in a spot where it’s on the road against an undefeated Syracuse team, but you know what? The records don’t matter. Clemson is the better team in this matchup and should be favored around 10 points, not less than a touchdown.

Clemson’s offense has limitations, but its defense remains phenomenal. Syracuse’s overall passing numbers have been inflated by playing bad pass defenses, and the Orange have lost one of their most reliable pass-catchers in Oronde Gadsden. We’ve seen them turn to using Garrett Schrader as a battering ram QB in recent weeks (35 carries against Purdue and Army ). That will not be a feasible strategy against Clemson. Schrader and the Orange offense will have to move the ball effectively through the air, and I’m betting they won’t be able to do so. The Pick: Clemson -6.5 (-110)

Friday Night Game of the Week

No. 10 Utah at No. 19 Oregon State : Kyle Whittingham loves where Utah is right now. The Utes haven’t had their starting QB all season, but they’re 4-0 anyway. Meanwhile, every word uttered about the Pac-12 has been about Colorado, Oregon, Washington or USC . Nobody is paying any attention to the two-time conference champions who are ranked in the top 10. This is fortunate for the Utes in that it allows them to fly under the radar, and it keeps people from realizing that, right now, Utah is Mountain Iowa .

The offense has been awful, and the Utah defense is winning games. Meanwhile, after getting off to a great start, D.J. Uiagalelei looks like the Clemson version (31-of-64 passing, 2 TD, 3 INT in the last two games). With both teams playing on a short week, I expect this one to be a bit of a rock fight. Utah will do everything it can to make it that way, and I don’t trust Oregon State’s ability to open things up and make the Utes uncomfortable. The Pick: Under 44.5 (-105)

No. 13 Alabama is out of the top 10 of The Associated Press college football poll for the first time in eight years, and Georgia remained No. 1 on Sunday.

Georgia received 57 first-place votes in the AP Top 25. Michigan held at No. 2 with two first-place votes. No. 3 Texas flipped spots with No. 4 Florida State. The Longhorns received three first-place votes and the Seminoles got one.

After scraping by South Florida on Saturday, Alabama (2-1) saw its streak of consecutive AP poll appearances ranked in the top 10 snapped at 128. That was the second-longest such streak in the history of the poll behind Miami’s 137 from 1985-93.

The Crimson Tide are out of the top 10 for the first time since Sept. 27, 2015. The Tide dropped out of the top 10 that September after losing at Mississippi but moved back in on Oct. 3 and went on to win a national championship.

Georgia now has the longest active run of top-10 rankings with 37.

The ugly 17-3 win against USF marked Alabama’s first game against a non-Power Five conference opponent since 2007 in which the Tide failed to score at least 20 points. In its previous 42 games against non-Power Five opponents, Alabama was unbeaten, with an average margin of victory of 40 points.

The rest of the top 10 included No. 6 Ohio State , No. 7 Penn State, No. 8 Washington, No. 9 Notre Dame and No. 10 Oregon.

The Buckeyes will visit the Fighting Irish next Saturday as the centerpiece of a huge schedule of ranked vs. ranked games.

POLL POINTS

Alabama still has the longest streak in the country of consecutive weeks being ranked at 249.

That’s the second best of all time but still a long way behind the record. Nebraska, under Tom Osborne, was ranked for 348 straight weeks from 1981-2002.

The next-best active streak behind Alabama belongs to Ohio State at 182, though the Buckeyes were not eligible for the first few regular-season polls of the 2020 season.

Georgia’s streak is at 102. Michigan is fourth best at 34 and Utah has the fifth-longest active Top 25 streak at 25.

IN AND OUT

Kansas State was the only team to fall out of the ranking this week after losing at Missouri on a 61-yard field goal as time expired.

No. 25 Florida moved back in for the first time since Sept. 24 of last season after upsetting Tennessee.

“It validates your plan, what you’re selling to a degree,” Florida coach Billy Napier said after the game. “That’s what you want as a leader. … That’s a lot more fun.”

The Vols dropped 12 spots to No. 23.

With the Gators back in the AP Top 25, Florida State, Miami and Florida are all ranked for the first time since Sept. 17, 2017.

CONFERENCE CALL

The only two ranked teams in the Big 12 this week are the ones leaving after this season, Texas and Oklahoma.

Though, to be fair, Colorado and Utah will be joining from the Pac-12 and the Utes are No. 11 and Buffaloes No. 19, after winning a double-overtime thriller against Colorado State.

Pac-12 — 8 (Nos. 5, 8, 10, 11, 14, 19, 21, 22).

SEC — 6 (Nos. 1, 12, 13, 15, 23, 25).

ACC — 4 (Nos. 4, 17, 18, 20).

Big Ten — 4 (Nos. 2, 6, 7, 24).

Big 12 — 2 (Nos. 3, 16).

Independent — 1 (No. 9).

RANKED vs. RANKED

Doesn’t get much better than this slate of games.

No. 6 Ohio State at No. 9 Notre Dame. For the second straight year, it’s a top-10 matchup.

No. 15 Ole Miss at No. 13 Alabama. Tide leads series 9-3 when both are ranked.

No. 22 UCLA at No. 11 Utah. The second meeting with both teams ranked. The first was last year.

No. 19 Colorado at No. 10 Oregon. First regular-season meeting with both teams ranked.

No. 14 Oregon State at No. 21 Washington State. The Beavers and Cougars, the Pac-12’s left-behinds, have played 98 times but never before when both teams were ranked.

No. 24 Iowa at No. 7 Penn State. Three of the last four meetings came when both were ranked.

Column: Coach Prime dominates the college football world. What might come next?

Deion Sanders hobbles to get around these days, but his ability to command an audience is even more potent than it was during his speedier playing days.

Just three games into his first head coaching job in college football’s top division, the guy who went from Prime Time to Coach Prime has been the non-stop talk of the sporting world.

Given how quickly the 56-year-old Sanders moves — metaphorically speaking, as he struggles with blood-clot issues in his legs and feet — it’s certainly not too soon to ponder where this phenomenon might lead.

Can the Colorado Buffaloes keep winning even with a brutal schedule ahead of them? If they do, will a more prominent school come calling for Coach Prime in the not-too-distant future? Has Sanders’ nearly complete overhaul of a downtrodden team through the transfer portal established a new template for building a program? Should every coach start wearing sunglasses?

The Buffaloes, who won a single game in 2022 and have just one winning season in the past 17 years, are off to a captivating 3-0 start that includes a road victory over a TCU team that played in the most recent national championship game and an improbable double-overtime triumph over rival Colorado State.

  • Charity boss speaks out over ‘traumatic’ encounter with royal aide

But before we start penciling in No. 19 Colorado for the College Football Playoff, it’s worth taking a look at their upcoming schedule.

Six of their last nine regular-season games are against teams currently ranked in The Associated Press Top 25.

Yikes.

The Pac-12 gauntlet begins Saturday with a road game at No. 10 Oregon , followed by a home contest the following weekend against fifth-ranked Southern Cal. Down the road are No. 22 UCLA, No. 14 Oregon State, No. 21 Washington State and No. 11 Utah.

Making these games all the more daunting: Colorado will be without its two-way star, Travis Hunter, for several weeks after he took a brutal cheap shot from Colorado State.

If the Buffaloes start losing, the nation’s attention will surely turn to more conventional storylines such as Georgia’s quest for a third straight national title.

Then again, never bet against Coach Prime. If his team can pull off another upset or two — they’re a whopping 21-point underdog against Oregon, according to FanDuel Sportsbook — his star will shine brighter than it already is, if that’s even possible.

“We have not played a complete game,” Sanders said. “When the offense is playing well, the defense is hot garbage. If the defense if playing well, the offense is horrible. The special teams aren’t special. We’ve got to put it all together to be able to defeat a team like Oregon.”

But let’s say the Buffaloes win at least eight or nine games and earn a prominent bowl bid ahead of their move next season to the Big 12. That would be a remarkable accomplishment, one that might tempt another school — or maybe even an NFL team — to send out feelers to Coach Prime.

He would surely listen.

“I’m aggressive by nature,” Sanders said, responding to an unrelated question but giving a clear glimpse into his psyche on most any issue. “I’m a go-getter, I’m a doer, I’m an attacker. I don’t sit back and wait on nothing to happen. I’m gonna go make it happen.”

Michigan State , which is in the process of firing Mel Tucker, might look for a splashy hire to rejuvenate a program that faces stiff competition in the ever-expanding Big Ten. Oklahoma is getting ready to move to the mighty Southeastern Conference and could decide that Brent Venables isn’t the right guy to lead that transition. And let’s not forget Texas A&M, which already plays in the SEC and hasn’t come close to meeting expectations under Jimbo Fisher.

All of those schools have far more storied programs than Colorado, but that could be a double-edged sword for any team that went after Sanders as its next coach.

With nothing to lose, Colorado has largely ceded the identity of its athletic program to the Coach Prime brand. While you can’t really blame the suits in Boulder for allowing this to happen, a more prominent program might be reluctant to let one man’s dynamic personality overshadow the entire athletic department.

Then again, Alabama’s Nick Saban and Georgia’s Kirby Smart, just to name two, certainly wield that kind of influence on their campuses.

The more pertinent question might be: Would any big-time school where the power base is largely made up of white men be willing to allow a Black coach to be such an overwhelming force?

Sanders has caught some well-deserved grief for the ruthless way he overhauled the Colorado roster, leaving just nine scholarship players returning to the team from a year ago.

Yet no one worked the transfer portal with greater effectiveness than Coach Prime, who lured in skilled players from all over the country. It’s likely that many schools will try to mimic his methods going forward, but it’s doubtful anyone can match the shear force of his personality when it comes to persuading someone they should come play for him.

Even though he last suited up in the NFL nearly two decades ago, Sanders can relate better than most coaches to today’s generation. For instance, having rapper Lil Wayne lead the team onto the field before a game. Or getting the Rock to watch from the sidelines. Or sending his team out in different uniform combinations for every game.

“Shoot, you all want options,” Sanders told reporters at his weekly news conference. “That’s why you’re working, right? So you can have options to go buy what you wanna buy, get what you wanna get, do what you wanna do. Just giving the kids those types of options is phenomenal for those young men.”

Sanders is certainly willing to toot his own horn. He began his latest press briefing by reciting some of the impressive numbers his team has wracked up already, from stellar television ratings to selling out of every home games for the first time in school history.

“It’s incredible,” Sanders said. “Our kids are getting eyeballs, they’re getting viewers, they’re getting scouts out every day to watch what they’re gifted to do.”

Rest assured, no one is getting more eyeballs than Coach Prime.

Now, let’s see where it leads.
