Why not everyone’s happy with Levi’s AI-generated models

March 27, 2023 by www.sfchronicle.com Leave a Comment

Levi Strauss & Co. has announced its plans to integrate AI-generated models to advertise products on its website and mobile app later this year.

The San Francisco denim company partnered with Lalaland.ai , a digital fashion studio that uses artificial intelligence technology to produce life-like models.

The computer-generated models will supplement human models and enhance the number and diversity of models for Levi’s products in a sustainable manner, the company said.

Lalaland.ai, which was founded in 2019 in Amsterdam, is known for creating “hyper-realistic models of every body type, age, size and skin tone” for a host of retailers. Levi’s hopes the technology will help create a more inclusive shopping experience for its customers.

“While AI will likely never fully replace human models for us, we are excited for the potential capabilities this may afford us for the consumer experience,” said Dr. Amy Gershkoff Bolles, a Levi Strauss executive focused on emerging tech.

The company emphasized that diversity remains a priority and that its efforts extend beyond AI-generated models, although it did not specify what those efforts are.

Other companies, including Mattel, CarMax, and Coca-Cola, are using artificial intelligence tools, such as DALL-E and ChatGPT, for various purposes.

However, some AI experts caution that companies should consider the potential risks to customers, society, and their reputations before hastily adopting ChatGPT and similar products.

While text generators like ChatGPT and Microsoft’s Bing chatbot can make the process of writing emails, presentations and marketing pitches faster and easier, they also have a tendency to confidently present misinformation as fact. Image generators trained on a huge trove of digital art and photography have raised copyright concerns from the original creators of those works.

Last year, Capitol Records signed — and subsequently dropped — the AI-generated rapper FN Meka . The virtual artist drew immediate controversy by using a racial slur in its lyrics and posting an image on its Instagram account depicting the character being beaten in a jail cell by a police officer.

In an open letter to Capitol Records, the nonprofit activist group Industry Blackout called out the character as a “caricature,” adding “it is a direct insult to the Black community.”

Claire Leibowicz of The Partnership on AI, a nonprofit group established and sponsored by leading tech providers, recently released a set of recommendations for companies producing AI-generated imagery, audio and other media.

“They should play around and tinker, but we should also think, what purpose are these tools serving in the first place?” she said.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

AI-Generated Kanye West Verse Goes Viral

March 27, 2023 by usa.inquirer.net Leave a Comment

A viral video of Kanye West demonstrating the capability of AI to simulate any musician’s voice on any music track has stirred excitement among fans, who claim this technology can take the music industry to a whole new era.

This viral video which features an AI-generated clip of Kanye’s verse, was by Roberto Nickson—an AI expert, who claims it wasn’t challenging to create.

In the video, Nickson explains that one can quickly generate convincing verses by recording reference vocals and replacing them with a trained model of any preferred musician.

“I came across a beat with Kanye’s instrumental style on youtube. I immediately downloaded it and wrote bars of lyrics on it.” Nickson said, “I plan to substitute my vocal contribution with an AI-generated Kanye West replica.”

After playing my verse on the video, you could see from the comments and reviews that some people struggled to believe it wasn’t Kanye West singing.

And just like that. The music industry is forever changed.

I recorded a verse, and had a trained AI model of Kanye replace my vocals.

The results will blow your mind. Utterly incredible. pic.twitter.com/wY1pn9RGWx

Nickson also said, “crazy, right? and this isn’t even the best of AI yet. In a few years, we would have AI models for all popular musicians in the industry.”

AI and the Future of Music

“In a couple of years, you would be streaming songs from your favorite musicians and won’t be able to tell if it was actually them.’

He continued, “This could affect the music industry in various ways, but we do hope it does not result in having to put down AI.”

What Investors Should Consider When Thinking About The Potential Of AI

Ozi Amanat is an international investor, venture capitalist and founder at K2 Global .

I asked ChatGPT its opinion about artificial intelligence (AI) systems in today’s society, and this is what it had to say:

As an artificial intelligence language model, I do not have personal opinions or beliefs. However, I can provide an objective analysis of AI systems in today’s society. AI has brought about numerous benefits to society, such as improved efficiency, accuracy, and decision-making processes. It has also contributed to advancements in medical research, transportation, and various other industries. However, the deployment of AI systems in today’s society also presents potential risks, such as job displacement, privacy concerns, and the possibility of biased algorithms. Therefore, it is crucial to ensure that AI is developed ethically and responsibly to mitigate these risks and ensure that the technology benefits society as a whole. In summary, AI systems have immense potential to positively impact society, but their deployment must be done with careful consideration and ethical responsibility.

The tool itself is intimately aware of the ethical concerns bearing over its use. We are at the precipice of mass AI adoption, but we still can’t seem to decide whether AI will be our savior or our villain. It comes down to the applications and responsible management of AI systems.

The Applications

Humans have always created tools to make our lives easier. Historically, “mechanical muscles” and outsourcing shifted physical labor. Now we’re at the point where “mechanical minds” will unleash a cascade of applications across industries. Automation has evolved from more than just the physical.

One major development pushing forward the AI adoption frontier is Microsoft’s continued investment with OpenAI . This partnership will likely lead to everything from optimized Excels to AI-generated PowerPoints and even more support in email management. White-collar work is now ripe for disruption.

In finance, AI can be leveraged in a variety of ways. AI algorithms can identify patterns of fraudulent behavior, such as unusual transactions or identity theft, allowing financial institutions to quickly detect and prevent fraudulent activities. AI can also analyze market trends and make predictions about future trends, enabling traders to make more accurate investment decisions.

While this is only one sample of industry transformation, there are some areas of work that will be impacted less by AI. These industries are those operating in information asymmetry—such as early-stage venture capital investment. For AI to work effectively, the model must have access to data. Industries whose data is private, segregated and complex cannot train and build inferences in the same way that a model based on publicly available information can.

The strength of AI is dependent on the value of its underlying data and model, which in turn is dependent on the quality of the rules set forth by the humans crafting the algorithms.

The Management

With the growing adoption of AI, we must continue to maintain an element of skepticism and criticism. These tools will continue to develop, but they should not be treated as an all-knowing source of truth. Again, this is critical because these systems only know what is in their underlying systems. As people, investors and business-minded individuals, we must acknowledge the strength of these systems while also considering the fact that they must be constantly maintained. While AI employs a constantly evolving algorithm that learns from itself and experiences, we must still continue to adjust the rules and data sources supporting these AI systems.

Diversity of thought and perspectives is critical for those who have the power to develop these systems. A system created by humans with biases will intrinsically be biased as well. We must maintain human values in control of the systems. In today’s society where truth seems to be subjective, belief in these systems can be both extremely advantageous and extremely detrimental. We must refrain from programming systems to tell people what they want to hear. It is important for people to understand and respect the limitations of AI.

In conclusion, I believe in the future and the power of AI to transform, but this transformation will only be positive if we continue to be critical stewards of truth and information. As investors, I encourage you to maintain a healthy dose of skepticism when investing in AI-powered solutions. Look at the human beings who stand behind those systems because their beliefs are the ones driving the solution.
