Great Expectations star Shalom Brune-Franklin confesses she was ‘terrified’ of Olivia Colman

March 23, 2023 by metro.co.uk Leave a Comment

Great Expectations star Shalom Brune-Franklin has admitted she was feeling very nervous before meeting acting legend Olivia Colman for the first time.

The Line of Duty actress, 28, stars alongside Olivia, 49, in the BBC adaptation of the Charles Dickens novel , which is from Peaky Blinders ’ creator Steven Knight .

The Crown performer plays Miss Havisham , while Shalom portrays Estella in the tale which follows orphan Pip (Fionn Whitehead) who suddenly comes into a large fortune and is forced to navigate between his newfound wealth and the poverty of Victorian England.

Ahead of the much-anticipated drama’s launch, Shalom appeared on Thursday’s This Morning, where she spoke about her co-star along with hosts Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield.

Referring to her role as Miss Havisham, Holly, 42, said: ‘Olivia Coleman is incredible and utterly terrifying.’

Nodding in agreement, The Tourist actress said: ‘Like, truly. That outfit is just unbelievable.’

‘Yet,’ Phil jumped in, before continuing: ‘One of the world’s most lovely people.’

Shalom asked, indicating to Holly and Phil: ‘You guys would’ve met her, right?’

‘Oh, lots of times,’ Phil replied. ‘She’s just lovely.’

Shalom explained that Estella and Miss Havisham have a ‘toxic, horrible’ relationship and was hoping to channel her fear of meeting The Lost Daughter actress into her character.

She added: ‘I was hoping that my fear of actually meeting Olivia Colman could play into it a little bit. I thought, “I’m going to be terrified when I see her on set so just use it.”

‘And then I met her and she’s just the nicest, friendliest, funniest person ever. So I thought, “I might actually have to do some acting instead.”‘

This Morning airs weekdays from 10am on ITV. Great Expectations will premiere on BBC One and BBC iPlayer on Sunday March, 26.

First look at Olivia Colman’s eerie Miss Havisham revealed for BBC’s Great Expectations and she looks hauntingly perfect

July 12, 2022 by metro.co.uk Leave a Comment

There’s been no shortage of actresses who’ve played Miss Havisham in Great Expectations over the years, from Gillian Anderson to Helena Bonham Carter .

Oscar winner Olivia Colman is now the latest to take on the role of the character created by Charles Dickens in an upcoming BBC adaptation – and if the first look is anything to go by, she’s captured the essence of the eerie spinster to a tee.

The Favourite star has been revealed in character in two newly-released pictures, showing her acting opposite Pip actor Fionn Whitehead and Estella actress Shalom Brune-Franklin.

In the photo of Olivia and Fionn, Miss Havisham is holding Pip by the chin, her hair turned grey and her wedding veil still adorned on her head after she was jilted at the altar years previously.

Miss Havisham gazes directly at Pip’s face, as he looks back at her, seemingly bemused by the woman standing before him in her wedding gown.

In the second image, Miss Havisham is standing up in an ornate, cobwebbed room, leaning on her walking stick to keep her upright while a shocked or fatigued expression dawns on her face.

Estella is sitting down nearby, seemingly unperturbed by her companion as she reads something on a piece of parchment.

In the novel Great Expectations, which was first published between 1860 and 1861 in serialised form, Miss Havisham welcomes Pip into her home as a companion, to join her and her adopted daughter Estella.

While Pip falls in love with Estella, Estella is taught from a young age by Miss Havisham not to love men, which results in there being a roadblock in their relationship.

The latest adaptation of the story, by the BBC and FX, will be a six-part limited series.

The cast also boasts actors including Ashley Thomas, Johnny Harris, Hayley Squires, Owen McDonnell, Trystan Gravelle, Rudi Dharmalingam and Matt Berry.

Fionn previously starred in Dunkirk and Black Mirror: Bandersnatch, earning a nomination for the Empire Award for Best Male Newcomer for the former.

Shalom has starred in a variety of dramas including Our Girl, Doctor Doctor and War of the Worlds, as well as The Tourist alongside Jamie Dornan and Line of Duty as DC Chloë Bishop.

Great Expectations will air on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.

Olivia Colman totally unrecognisable as Miss Havisham in BBC’s Great Expectations teaser

February 6, 2023 by metro.co.uk Leave a Comment

Olivia Colman proved she is the queen of versatility after showing off her incredible transformation as Miss Havisham in the upcoming BBC adaptation of Great Expectations.

It was confirmed last February that The Lost Daughter actress, 49, will be playing the wealthy spinster in the coming-of-age story, created by Bafta-winning writer Steven Knight .

In the official teaser, The Crown star tells the young orphan Pip (Tom Sweet): ‘Let me see you… what a prize creature we have fished from the river.’

Olivia stayed true to character as she donned wild white hair and stained teeth. In July 2022, the BBC dropped a first look at the actress in action showing her acting opposite Pip actor Fionn Whitehead and Estella actress Shalom Brune-Franklin.

In the photo of Olivia and Fionn, Miss Havisham is holding Pip by the chin, and in the other, the fictional character is standing up in an ornate, cobwebbed room, leaning on her walking stick to keep her upright while a shocked or fatigued expression dawns on her face.

Great Expectations and A Christmas Carol are the first two in a series of adaptations of Dickens’ novels that have been commissioned by both broadcasters.

Great Expectations will air later this year BBC One and BBC iPlayer.

Steven Knight’s ‘darker’ Great Expectations includes spanking, references to slave trade and Miss Havisham’s opium addiction

March 21, 2023 by metro.co.uk Leave a Comment

Steven Knight ’s Great Expectations adaptation, which stars Olivia Colman as Miss Havisham , is taking a ‘darker’ spin.

The Crown star will be joining Fionn Whitehead and Shalom Brune-Franklin as Pip and Estella respectively in the new series of Charles Dickens’ renowned work.

Peaky Blinders ’ creator Knight, who has previously adapted Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, said: ‘What I didn’t want to do – and I think Dickens never tried to do – was make something specifically political.

‘He was never banging the drum, he was just saying, “This is what’s going on” and people could draw their own conclusions. You couldn’t write about certain things in Dickens’ time: Certain elements of sexuality, crime, disobedience against the crown and state.’

He added to The Daily Mail : ‘What I tried to do was imagine if Dickens was writing the story now and had the freedom to go to those darker places, what would he do? If he had been liberated to write the things that were going on that he wasn’t allowed to write about.’

Speaking about one scene, which sees Matt Berry spanked as he plays Mr Pumblechook, Colman said: ‘The first time I read Steven Knight’s script, I thought it was much darker than what I had remembered from school. Quite a few bottom-slapping moments, which I did not recall from the original Dickens! There were quite a few changes and I found it quite gripping.’

The adaptation also sees Miss Havisham, whose eerie appearance has already been teased, as an opium addict.

Knight elsewhere includes references to the British Empire’s connections to the slave trade, while the first episode begins with Pip contemplating suicide, rather than being approached by Magwitch.

The chilling trailer begins with Miss Havisham warning Pip: ‘When I was young, I was blinded by love, now look on what remains of me.’

Hidden in the shadows of her ruined mansion, Olivia’s Miss Havisham, decked out in her fated wedding dress, questions Pip before watching him grow.

The clip then cuts to a teenage Pip growing closer to Estella, from playing games together as children to learning ballroom steps in each other’s arms.

‘Innocent, moments before the great corruption,’ Miss Havisham’s voice hair-rising voice interrupts.

As Pip falls for Estella, he’s introduced to the world around them, he’s forced to face violence, poverty and all that he had been hidden from.

Meanwhile, he must win Estella, who has been taught not to love men, while she remains Miss Havisham’s ‘weapon of love’ and ‘prized creature’.

Great Expectations will air on BBC One and BBC iPlayer later this year.

During ‘The Real Housewives’ reunion where 48-year-old Larsa made her ‘four times a night’ claim, she was asked whether it was awkward that heR new beau was closer in age to her eldest son, Scottie Junior, than she was to 32-year-old Marcus.
