Vinicius Junior’s Real Madrid return comes at perfect time with trip to face Napoli in UCL looming

Real Madrid got back to winning ways on Wednesday with a 2-0 win over Las Palmas at Santiago Bernabeu in La Liga thanks to Brahim Diaz and Joselu goals. It was not enough to go back to the top of the Spanish topflight, though, given Girona’s unbeaten start to the season which keeps them one point ahead after seven games.

Real were well beaten 3-1 by Madrid rivals Atletico last weekend to end what had been a strong opening phase of the campaign for Carlo Ancelotti’s side. However, arguably a bigger positive than the victory against the Canary Island side was the return of Vinicius Junior who came on after 57 minutes to replace Joselu.

The Brazilian superstar was due to be involved against Atleti before illness struck to rule him out of the derby but his previous involvement before Wednesday dated back more than one month. Losing Vini Jr. during an early term flurry of injuries which included potential season-ending issues for both Thibaut Courtois and Eder Militao threw a sizeable spanner in the works for Ancelotti.

Factor in summer signing Arda Guler’s recurrent injury problems since his arrival in Spain and now a potential injury to David Alaba too after he came off vs. Las Palmas, and it adds up. Ancelotti is already doing the best he can to extract the maximum from the likes of veteran midfield pair Luka Modric and Toni Kroos by limiting their game time for maximum impact.

Jude Bellingham has stepped into the middle and has started life with Los Blancos extremely well with five goals and one assist already. The decorated Croat and dependable German still offer important experience and almost unrivaled technique in the midfield despite their advancing ages along with Fede Valverde, Aurelien Tchouameni and Eduardo Camavinga.

Arguably Ancelotti’s biggest headache, though, is the fact that this Real side are largely relying upon the veteran Joselu to lead the attack. The 33-year-old Spanish journeyman has three goals and an assist so far this campaign but he has been out-scored by the impressive Bellingham who is currently punching well above his statistical expectations.

Vini Jr. should help to ease the burden on Joselu with a more consistent goal threat to also relieve Rodrygo of some of the pressure created by an early term reliance upon the Brazilian. Alaba’s absence is likely to be more complicated, though, given that Antonio Rudiger is also a doubt ahead of this weekend’s trip to face unbeaten La Liga leaders Girona in Catalonia.

Such a scenario leaves Ancelotti with just one fully fit central defensive option — veteran captain Nacho Fernandez — which will almost certainly dictate a reshuffle at the back for the Italian. It is in keeping with most of this season’s theme so far of Ancelotti constantly having to find solutions for multiple problems which have appeared on an almost weekly basis.

Barcelona being held by Mallorca earlier this week has helped to keep things fairly tight at the top with nobody running away with an early campaign lead. Girona is a chance, despite all of those issues, for Real to actually seize control of the Spanish topflight ahead of a tricky away day against Napoli in UEFA Champions League Group C after a late win over Union Berlin in the opener.

Considering how this term has gone so far, it might get worse before it gets better for Ancelotti set to join the Brazil national team role and has seen Xabi Alonso as well as Roberto De Zerbi linked with his hotseat. Beating Girona at Montilivi with the returning Vini Jr. would be an ideal way to relieve some of that pressure and to keep the growing critics relatively quiet.

Boy wonder who tore apart Man Utd and was wanted by Real Madrid now worth just £1.75m

September 28, 2023 by www.dailystar.co.uk Leave a Comment

Pione Sisto had the world at his feet after tearing apart Manchester United to earning links to Real Madrid – but things haven’t gone to plan

Now 28 and recently signing for mid-table Turkish outfit Alanyaspor, the forward hasn’t played for the Denmark national side since back in 2020. The peak of his career might well have been during Midtjylland’s Europa League run of 2015/16 – when he stole the headlines.

Scouts from Real Madrid , Barcelona, Milan and Juventus are believed to watch the dynamic young forward in action as he scored both home and away against United before Midtjylland crashed out of the competition.

The European showcase came three years after he broke into the Midtjylland first-team having progressed through their youth academy after beginning his career with Tjorring.

His four full seasons with Midtjylland brought 31 goals with Celta Vigo winning the race to sign him for a fee of around £5million.

Despite showing glimpses of his ability, he rejoined Midtjylland with a year left on his five-year deal and managed another 15 goals across 101 games.

Sisto joined Super Lig club Alanyaspor earlier this month as he looks to recreate his early season form with Transfermarkt having his current value at £1.75m – having once been seven times higher.

His international career was also underwhelming, with one goal across 26 caps and a poor run of form at the 2018 World Cup.

Sisto proclaimed himself to be ‘the most hated person in Denmark’ due to his performances, more recently revealing that he suffered from bouts of depression following the tournament.

Sisto now has the chance to get his career back on track under the guidance of Omer Erdogan, with team-mates including former Swansea man Leroy Fer.

Sisto said on his arrival: “I would like to thank our president very much. I came to a very beautiful city.

“I can’t wait to meet our fans. After my transfer was complete, messages started coming from the fans. I thank them very much for their interest.”

Lionel Messi misses Inter Miami final as Zinedine Zidane’s trip to watch is ‘ruined’

September 28, 2023 by www.dailystar.co.uk Leave a Comment

Zinedine Zidane’s visit to Inter Miami to watch Lionel Messi in action was ruined by the Argentine’s injury.

A packed out crowd at DRV PNK Stadium, Fort Lauderdale, hoped to catch a glimpse of Messi in the US Open Cup final against Houston Dynamo. Even former Real Madrid manager Zidane, an old Los Blancos team-mate of Miami co-owner David Beckham , turned up for the occasion.

But fans – who splashed out on tickets ranging from $400 to $4000 – were left bitterly disappointed when news came through that captain Messi was not even on the bench. And his side failed to add to their Leagues Cup victory by losing 2-1 to Houston.

The World Cup winner, 36, could only watch from the stands due to what manager Tata Martino called fatigue, after a gruelling run of fixtures for both club and country. Griffin Dorsey and Amine Bassi scored in the first-half, before Josef Martinez pulled one back for the Herons late on.

Despite the disappointment of not seeing him work his magic, Zidane did get to meet Messi after travelling all that way. The three-time Champions League-winning manager posed for a picture in the dressing room with the former Barcelona captain, who he faced numerous times with Madrid during their time in Spain.

Zidane, who managed Real Madrid from 2016 to 2018 and then from 2019 to 2021, has not taken on a management role since. He won three consecutive Champions League winners’ medals as well as two La Liga titles in the dugout.

Yet the 1998 World Cup winner is far from the only big name to try to catch a glimpse of Messi in action this season. A-list celebrities such as Will Ferrell, P Diddy, DJ Khaled, Serena Williams, Selena Gomez and Michael Jordan have all flocked to Florida to watch footballing royalty following Messi’s much-needed escape from PSG .

Is Jose Mourinho’s Third Season Curse Striking Again At Roma?

Is lightning striking for a fourth time for Jose Mourinho?

That appears to be the case following Roma’s humiliating 4-1 away defeat to newly-promoted Genoa. Roma have had a disastrous start to the season, and Mourinho’s men find themselves in the bottom half of the table with only one win in six games.

In fact, Roma are two points off the relegation zone, and their defeat to Genoa marks the lowest point of the Mourinho era. What was more galling for the Portuguese coach was that he utilised his strongest attackers against Genoa. All three of Romelu Lukaku, Lorenzo Pellegrini and Paulo Dybala started against Genoa at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris. In midfield, first choice options Leandro Paredes and Bryan Cristante operated in the middle of the pitch.

In short, Mourinho can have no excuses for how his team capitulated in Genoa. The hallmark of any good Mourinho side is defensive solidity, yet Roma have now conceded 13 goals in six games. Last season, it took until mid-November for his side to concede the same number. This season, Roma have kept only one clean sheet, in the 7-0 thumping of Empoli, and there is an alarming fragility to Mourinho’s side defensively that has echoes in his third season at previous clubs.

“The third season is fatal,” claimed the legendary Benfica, Milan and Porto coach Bela Guttmann. Guttmann, one of the most esteemed managers of the post-WW II period, never hung around at clubs too long; never quite outstayed his welcome. To Guttmann, two seasons was more than enough for players to get sick of a coach’s demands; familiarity bred contempt, felt Guttmann, and he would make an impact on any given side, and subsequently leave before there was a backlash and inevitable downfall.

Mourinho in that regard could be viewed as the modern Guttmann. Third seasons at Real Madrid, Chelsea and Manchester United have been disastrous. He was sacked at both Chelsea (second stint) and United in the early stages of his third season, with players tiring of his methods. He wasn’t sacked at Madrid, but it was this season that he started a feud with first choice goalkeeper – not to mention club legend – Ilker Casillas, which in turn caused such internal upheaval within the Madrid locker room that there was no choice but for Mourinho to leave in the summer of 2013. Casillas’ career was also never the same.

At Roma, Mourinho isn’t causing tension behind the scenes, but many of the players have been with him since the beginning and are now showing signs of fatigue. Rui Patricio has been especially culpable for several of Roma’s conceded goals this season and doesn’t look the goalkeeper he was six months ago; Chris Smalling is yet to recover his form, Roger Ibanez has been sold to help the club’s FFP issues; while Gianluca Mancini has always blown hot and cold.

Roma has never performed so poorly in the three-points-per-win era, one that stretches back nearly 30 years now, and question marks are being asked whether Mourinho can turn Roma around. This wasn’t how the season was supposed to go. The goal was to make it into the top four and qualify for the Champions League, yet six games in and Roma seem further away than ever, it’s difficult to see them overcoming any of the big three, Napoli, Lazio or even Atalanta.

Mourinho has been hamstrung by FFP issues throughout his time in the Italian capital, yet Napoli have spent less than Roma in that period and won the league last season, so money isn’t entirely the issue.

What’s happening could be the strike of the third season curse, and given Mourinho’s track record, the beginning of the end could be nigh.
