TOM LOCKYER has had a heartbreaking end to the Championship play-off final.

The Luton Town star was stretched off the pitch just 12 minutes into the clash against Coventry .

Lockyer, 28, was running back and appeared to trip over away from the ball and then stayed down.

The Welshman then received attention from medical staff from both clubs before being stretched off the pitch.

As he was carried off, he was given oxygen by the medical teams and was conscious as he was taken through the tunnel.

He was taken to a medical room at Wembley Stadium and was with his parents.

It’s no secret that Scottie Pippen and Michael Jordan ‘s relationship is not one it once was, but the former hit his legendary ex-teammate with yet another broadside swipe earlier this week.

In fact, Pippen hit Jordan with a double whammy by taking a shot at him and praising LeBron James all at the same time.

On the “Gimme The Hot Sauce” podcast, Pippen suggested that Jordan was a “horrible player” early in his career, and James has had a better statistical career not just over Jordan, but everyone ever.

“LeBron will be the greatest statistical guy to ever play the game of basketball. And there’s no comparison to him. None,” Pippen said.

With that said, Pippen didn’t necessarily say that makes James the greatest ever, and he would “leave that up for debate.”

However, Pippen still took aim at Jordan.

CELTICS STARS SEND WARNING TO HEAT DESPITE FACING ELIMINATION IN GAME 4: ‘DON’T LET US WIN ONE TONIGHT’

“I saw Jordan play before I came to play with the Bulls. You guys saw him play. He was a horrible player. He was horrible to play with. He was all one-on-one, he’s shooting bad shots,” Pippen said.

Pippen then took it one step further, noting that Jordan’s legacy didn’t start to be written until Pippen came along.

“All of a sudden, we become a team, and we start winning, and everybody forgot who he was.”

In case you’ve forgotten, the duo won six championships together with the Chicago Bulls , and Jordan is widely regarded as the greatest player of all time, although plenty of arguments have been made for James, most recently when he became the NBA’s all-time leading scorer earlier this year.

Chelsea Women win WSL title: Emma Hayes coy on future as Sam Kerr says triumphs get better each year

May 27, 2023 by www.skysports.com Leave a Comment

Emma Hayes was coy on her future after guiding Chelsea Women to a fourth successive WSL title, while Sam Kerr says winning league titles gets better each year.

The Blues were two points ahead of Manchester United Women heading into the final game of the season, and easily dispatched Reading Women 3-0 to secure a domestic double, having also won the Women’s FA Cup two weeks ago.

When asked about her own future after another successful campaign, Hayes swerved the question, instead focusing on how she will recover from her recent successes.

“People say don’t make major life decisions when you’re knackered, and I am knackered,” the WSL title-winning manager told Sky Sports.

Chelsea lifted the WSL trophy for the fourth consecutive year following a 3-0 win over Reading.

It was an emotion-fuelled afternoon at the Select Car Leasing Stadium. Not only were Reading relegated but duo Magda Eriksson and Pernille Harder bid farewell to Chelsea as they depart this summer.

Hayes said of the emotions at full-time: “What an unbelievable team I’ve got. I was being man-marked by the cameraman at full-time so I couldn’t let loose with a few tears.

“It’s not just about building a team, you know how much I care about the sport and the business – looking at that wall of 6,000 fans gave me so much joy.”

Reading were also relegated on Saturday, with Kelly Chambers a close friend of Hayes.

The Chelsea boss added: “I’m upset too as she [Chambers] is heavily pregnant, she doesn’t need that stress. I’m really proud of her as she’s been in the business for 20 years. If I was a top club in this country, I’d be going after Kelly Chambers as she has so much knowledge.

“Sometimes she doesn’t get the recognition for the work she has done, building a football club on the lowest budget possible. I’m sad for her. It takes so much out of you. I’m looking forward to letting my hair down.

“I was crying for Kelly. I was crying for Magda. I was crying as I’ve got to have weeks off. I do enjoy it and feel the emotion. Keeping my motivation high hasn’t been difficult.”

Kerr: WSL titles get better each year

Sam Kerr says the feeling of winning the WSL title gets better every year after she picked up her fourth consecutive title with Chelsea.

Sam Kerr scored twice in the win at Reading, taking her total to 12 for the season. She has won a WSL title in each of her seasons at the club, and says being knocked out of the Champions League did help Chelsea’s end of season form.

She told Sky Sports : “I think they get better each year. They get harder definitely, so it makes it sweeter when it’s tight at the top. It’s my fourth but some people’s first so we’ll celebrate like it’s our first.

“We’re the greatest team in England. It’s not about me, it’s about the team and I’m happy so what can I say.

“We’ve shown over the last few years that in the last few games of the season, we’re a different team. Once you get knocked out of the Champions League, it’s easier to be fresh and prepare for games.

“After we did get knocked out, as disappointed as we were, we had two days off then it was back to business and we had more time.

“There was a little bit of pressure [for the title], but last year was the same thing. We knew that we had to win every game and if we did, we took care of ourselves and we like it that way.

“We play better under pressure and the next step for us is to play like that in the Champions League. This is amazing, but it would’ve been great to have two more trophies.”

Eriksson: My favourite title

Harder and Eriksson

Magdalena Eriksson and Pernille Harder reflect on their time at the club as they said goodbye to Chelsea after lifting the WSL trophy with 3-0 win over Reading.

Eriksson departs Chelsea with two more winners medals under her belt after winning the FA Cup and WSL in her final two weeks at the club.

But she earmarked the latest success as her favourite, and said she tried not to focus on her final game during the week.

“It’s my favourite [title] one,” she told Sky Sports . “They way we’ve done it this year, I don’t think anyone has used every single player with the amount of games we have – everyone has played their part and has been important.

Harder: Farewell from fans more than we could have expected

“The farewell from the fans has been amazing, much more than we could have expected. It’s emotional, but also makes me happy to see how much they support us both.

“That’s the way we do it at Chelsea and I’m so proud of that. We’ve also had setbacks with injuries, but people have stepped up.

“We also lost our manager for a short time and we had to step up – that says a lot about this team. I’m really happy to be saying goodbye after such a season. The fans are amazing as well.

“I’ve been living in denial because I didn’t want to focus on it before the game, it would be too emotional. We had a job to do here today, that was the main thing.

“As soon as I got subbed off, the emotions came. I feel overwhelmed.

“We take so much pride from the environment that we create as a team. It’s not just about winning, it’s about being nice to each other, being a family with players stepping up and developing.

“It’s something I’m all for, I stand behind it so much. The way we win is so important where everyone is equally as important.”

Chambers: A tough day for Reading

Please use Chrome browser for a more accessible video player

Kelly Chambers gives an emotional interview following a 3-0 loss to Chelsea, which sees her Reading side relegated to the WSL Championship.

Reading manager Chambers – who was honoured ahead of kick-off to mark her 20 years at the club – gave a tearful post-match interview, commenting on how difficult the final day was for her and her side.

She told Sky Sports : “It’s a tough day. In terms of the season, the league doesn’t lie. You need to be good enough across the season, but at the moment, a club like us can’t compete with the investment that other clubs are putting in.

“But I’m very proud. We’ve been in the league for eight years, and every year we’ve had the lowest budget, but we’ve managed to compete and find ways to make sure we stay in the league. It’s a very hard day overall.

“The first conversation will be with the club to make sure what is next, where do they want to go and how they want to take the women’s side forward.

Twitter Due to your consent preferences, you’re not able to view this. Open Privacy Options

“Then it’s building a team for next year and step into the Championship ready to compete and try to bounce straight back up.”

The Reading manager also paid tribute to friend Hayes, adding: “She was the first one to come up to me and say sorry!

“What she has done at Chelsea has been amazing – to win four titles on the bounce – and I know she’s hungry for the Champions League, I know she wants that desperately. To be able to do it year on year, it’s tough but you can see the support around her to be able to do that.

“Her knowledge of the game and what she’s done for the game to grow it at the same time is unbelievable.

“She does deserve it, not only with a small family, but her health issues this season, to go through all of that and to keep a team on track to win the league and other cups this season is phenomenal.”

Telford: Hayes has galvanised this team

Former Chelsea goalkeeper Carly Telford joined the Sky Sports punditry team, and congratulated Hayes on how she has managed to keep evolving her winning team.

“This season, it hasn’t always been about those players. Sam Kerr hasn’t scored as many goals, Pernille and Fran have been injured and everyone has stepped up.

“That doesn’t come from any old manager – that’s from experience, from Emma Hayes, who has been there and got many of the t-shirts.

“She has galvanised this team into something special. Four titles in a row is unbelievable.

“The pressure to evolve, the chasing pack gets closer, the league gets tighter – every team wants to knock Chelsea off their pedestal every single season.

“For Chelsea to come through the way they have, especially after the Barcelona loss, and kick on the way they have with the goals they’ve scored, the amount they haven’t conceded, they’ve got their heads down and gone on another mad run.

“You can see the relief on everyone’s faces to win it. You tick off the games, pick up the three points and move on. But now you can say ‘it’s done now’ and have a holiday.”

Nikki Allan: Man falsely accused of horrific schoolgirl murder says his life was ruined

May 23, 2023 by www.mirror.co.uk Leave a Comment

An innocent man falsely accused of schoolgirl Nikki Allan ‘s murder has spoken of how his life was ruined, on the day her real killer was finally sentenced.

The rare public statement from George Heron followed a sentencing hearing for 55-year-old David Boyd , who was convicted of the young girl’s horrific murder earlier this month.

Today at Newcastle Crown Court, Judge Mrs Justice Lambert said Boyd must serve at least 29 years behind bars before he can be considered for parole.

Nikki was seven-years-old on October 7, 1992, when she was savagely killed by Boyd, who stabbed her 37 times in the chest and smashed her over the head with a brick. Her body was found in the derelict Old Exchange in Sunderland’s East End building the following morning.

A Northumbria Police investigation led to the force wrongly accusing innocent Mr Heron of her murder, and he was arrested, charged and tried for the offence two years later before being cleared on the directions of the judge.

Wrongly accused George Heron received an apology from police this month over ‘mistakes that were made’ (

Real killer David Boyd has now been jailed for murdering Nikki in 1992 (

The neighbour lived in the same block of flats as Nikki’s family in the Wear Garth area of the city.

Mr Heron was subjected to oppressive questioning and denied having any involvement in the murder 120 times, during three days of interviews, before he made a ‘confession’.

The transcript of that interview is now used with police recruits to show them how not to deal with a suspect.

Mr Heron, now 56, was forced to leave his home, and eventually fled to Ireland after police said they were ‘not looking for anyone else’ in their inquiry when he was cleared at Leeds Crown Court.

Following Boyd’s sentencing, Mr Heron said: “I lost what little honour and property I had as a result of being falsely accused of Nikki Allan’s murder.

“I have had to read and hear (both online and offline) malicious lies being spread about me and my family – some of whom are now deceased and whose funerals I didn’t get a chance to attend (in some cases, I didn’t even find out about their deaths until months later).

“When I was arrested and interviewed in October 1992, my DNA was taken and has been held on record since then. The police would have been able to check it against any new developments/advances in science.

“Moving around several times and trying to rebuild what is left of my life hasn’t been easy – learning to trust anyone is difficult and I haven’t even felt that I could trust in any professional to get help. I have had to learn how to adapt on my own.

“Trusting the police has taken a long time – they still make me nervous to the point of feeling nauseous if I am alone with them.

“I don’t understand why the original officers couldn’t have admitted they made a mistake, apologised and looked at the case again – instead of having a blinkered view and not trying to put things right.

The sentencing remarks were filmed

“Originally, I was angry and upset at how I was treated – to the point that I had a drink issue for years (which I have dealt with on my own). I survive because I have to – like everyone else, I would like answers as to why it took so long to find out the truth.

“Finding out about the current investigation has been difficult – so many details and negative memories; bringing up mixed emotions about what happened back in 1992 and since. I feel sadness, disgust, anger, betrayal by people I expected to tell the truth (especially the original investigating officers).

“It is really difficult to put in words what I have felt since 1992 – going from trying to look out for my family to having my life flipped upside down.

“ Nikki Allan’s murder destroyed so many people’s lives – I am just one of those people. I could be angry about being unfairly treated from day one, but this isn’t about me – it is about getting the real truth out into the open, so her family (and what is left of mine) can have some closure and finally try to move on.

“I hope that people don’t blame the present officers for the mistakes that were made in 1992/1993 – it is not their fault. It was probably as difficult for them reopening the case and they should be given credit for the work they have done trying to get it solved.”

Boyd meanwhile remained free and indecently assaulted a nine-year-old girl in a Teesside park in 1999, later confessing to his probation officer he had previously had sexual fantasies about naked “young girls”.

The Mirror told how he used seven different names in his bid to escape justice – but Nikki’s mum Sharon Henderson refused to give up. Northumbria Police’s then chief constable in 2017, Steve Ashman, met her in 2017 and gave a fresh start in the inquiry.

New DNA techniques extracted traces on Nikki’s clothing and that breakthrough ultimately led police to Boyd, but also involved more than 850 Sunderland men volunteering to give DNA samples so they could be eliminated from the inquiry.

As part of the sentencing exercise, Newcastle Crown Court heard victims’ statements from George Heron and Nikki’s campaigning mother .

It comes after police issued an apology to Mr Heron following the conviction of Nikki’s real killer.

Northumbria Police Assistant Chief Constable Alastair Simpson confirmed that he had written to say how “truly sorry” he was to Mr Heron for the “mistakes that were made”.

“I am truly sorry for the mistakes that were made during the investigation and I am sorry for the length of time it has taken to get justice for the family. I can’t imagine the impact on them over the last 30 years.”

One part of the letter states: “On behalf of Northumbria Police, I would like to apologise for the mistakes that were made in the investigation and I hope, as you express in your statement, that the conviction of Mr Boyd will finally bring closure on this matter for you and allow you to move on with your life.”

An apology was also issued to Nikki’s family for the length of time it has taken police to bring Boyd to justice.
