The perceived noise of gunfire sent crowds running during two of the country’s largest Pride Parades in New York City and San Francisco this weekend despite law enforcement confirming false alarms.

Despite videos showing Manhattan revelers storming away from the sound of what they thought was a shooting, NYPD Chief of Patrol Jeffrey Maddrey confirmed that there had been no shots fired in Washington Square Park, the green epicenter of the Pride celebrations. NYPD said a further investigation determined fireworks were set off at the 9.75-acre public park in Greenwich Village.

Days earlier, tens of thousands of protesters assembled at the park for a pro-abortion protest after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. The crowd marched up 6th Avenue, and about two dozen protesters were arrested for blocking traffic near 42nd St., the New York Post reported. On Sunday, Planned Parenthood was the first contingent of the New York City Pride Parade .

In San Francisco, police officers assigned to the Civic Center area for the San Francisco Pride Festival responded at approximately 5:25 p.m. to a report of a shooting near 7th and Market Streets.

However, upon arrival, officers were unable to locate any victims or witnesses, and the police department said it was not immediately apparent if there was any merit to the shooting in the area. The department said officers remained on the scene to ensure the safety and security of Pride events.

The panic came on the heels of high-profile mass shootings in Uvalde, Texas, and Buffalo, New York.

This year was the first time pride parades in New York City and San Francisco made a full comeback since they were canceled in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic .

Social media users at both events described chaotic scenes as the crowds began to stampede and people reportedly started running and screaming of shots fired.

2019 MLB Home Run Derby: Projecting the ideal field with Josh Bell, Luke Voit and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. headlining

June 12, 2019 by www.cbssports.com Leave a Comment

In less than a month, we’ll be in the All-Star break and that means lots of things, including the fact that we’re closing in on one of the most entertaining parts of the MLB season (now that they fixed the format and put in a clock): the Home Run Derby. People are starting to talk about it, so let’s run down who would be in an ideal field.

Some of my personal rules:

  • I need at least one player from the home stadium. The most fun Derby finishes have been in Cincinnati when Todd Frazier won and last season in D.C. when Bryce Harper made a late run to beat Kyle Schwarber .
  • Moonshots are the most fun. I want prodigious bombs over and over. Sorry, Tommy La Stella .
  • There’s subjectivity here. I might think some players aren’t quite as fun to watch hit BP as others. Leading the league right now doesn’t mean I think a player is going to be incredibly fun in the Derby. Sorry in advance, Christian Yelich fans.
  • Generally speaking, I would avoid players who have done it before. Sorry to my favorite player in baseball, Javier Baez .
  • Not every player wants to do it. If a player has publicly declined before, I likely won’t be picking him. Giancarlo Stanton , for example, has said he doesn’t want to participate in the event any more.

Onto my field of eight, in no particular order.

Carlos Santana

As noted, we need a hometown hero and Santana’s the best they got now that Jose Ramirez has fallen apart. Some might argue for Francisco Lindor , but he’s said he doesn’t want to do it while Santana has said he does. Fair enough. Easy first pick.

Luke Voit

He absolutely destroys baseballs, he’s a Yankee (let’s face it, Yankee Haters, you know they move the needle nationally) and he wants to be in it . Bring him! He’s hit one 470 feet this season.

Franmil Reyes

Easy and major power to all fields, Reyes will be an unknown for a decent portion of the viewing audience but he’s so fun he’ll turn some heads. He ranks ninth in average exit velocity, so we know he can crush the baseball.

Pete Alonso

Alonso is among the league leaders in home runs, owns other-worldly power and he’s from a New York team. He checks a lot of boxes here, no?

Josh Bell

A huge breakout season surely has Bell going to the game anyway and Pittsburgh isn’t too far away from Cleveland. Surely Bell will have some supporters in the house, should Santana bow out early. Of note, Bell has hit one 474 feet this season and ranks third in the majors in average exit velocity.

Daniel Vogelbach

Seriously, just take a look. How can he not be in this?

Vladimir Guerrero Jr.

He’s going to be one of the most fun players in baseball for years to come, so let’s get the entire continent a look at him doing his thing on this stage. Of note, his average home run distance of 427 feet ranks third in baseball and he has the single hardest hit ball this season with a 118.9 mph single .

Joey Gallo

Arguably, no one in baseball has more raw power than Gallo and he’s having a career year. He also leads the majors in average exit velocity. Unfortunately, he’s hurt right now and might not make it. If he does, though …

If Gallo is still hurt …

Austin Riley

This event is a perfect showcase for all the young talent in the league and Riley has been unbelievable since coming up from the minors several weeks ago.

UC Law Dean: Roe v. Wade Reversal ‘Turns Back the Clock’ to When Women Were ‘Treated as Property’

June 27, 2022 by www.breitbart.com Leave a Comment

The chancellor and dean of the University of California Hastings College of the Law in San Francisco, California, reacted to the Supreme Court overruling Roe v. Wade on Friday by claiming that the ruling effectively “turns back the clock” to “when women did not have the right to vote” and were “treated as property,” adding, “I tremble for my granddaughters.”

“Today’s Supreme Court decision overturning Roe v. Wade is devastating on many levels,” Dean David Faigman proclaimed in an open letter, before claiming that women not being able to as easily kill their unborn children means the clock has been turned back to another century.

Abortion-rights activist Caroline Rhodes protests in front of the Supreme Court building following the announcement to the Dobbs v Jackson Women's Health Organization ruling on June 25, 2022 in Washington, DC. “This decision turns back the clock not just to 1973, but to a century when women did not have the right to vote and were, largely, treated as property,” Faigman wrote. “I tremble for my granddaughters.”

The dean then argued that “those with religious objections to abortion do not have the right to impose them on others,” before calling into question the legitimacy of the Supreme Court.

“As a dean and professor of constitutional law, this opinion — and, indeed, the composition of the Court itself, which is a product of political gerrymandering — raises basic questions regarding the legitimacy of the Court itself,” Faigman said.

On Friday, the Supreme Court overruled Roe v. Wade , holding in the Dobbs case that the Constitution does not include a right to abortion and returning the issue of abortion laws and regulations to state legislatures.

“On the eve of Pride weekend, Justice Thomas’s concurring opinion in Dobbs underscores the breadth of the potential challenges to other fundamental and hard-won rights, including marriage equality,” Faigman lamented in his letter.

Faigman concluded by pledging to use his role as the leader of one of California’s most prestigious law schools to help prepare future lawyers and policymakers to “grapple with the outcome of today’s decision.”

“UC Hastings is committed more than ever to its core mission to prepare diverse students to advance the rule of law and pursue justice,” he wrote. “Our students are the future lawyers and policymakers who will need to grapple with the outcome of today’s decision.”

Faigman is just one of the many members of academia having a public meltdown over the Supreme Court’s life-saving decision.

After the ruling, college and university professors took to social media, where they issued unhinged diatribes in response to the reality that not as many killings will transpire in a post-Roe America.

Colin Kaepernick’s Raiders Workout Was A ‘Disaster’: NFL Hall Of Famer | The Daily Wire

June 27, 2022 by www.dailywire.com Leave a Comment

Colin Kaepernick, who soared to mainstream media fame when he took a knee as the quarterback of the San Francisco 49ers, hasn’t thrown an NFL pass in five years.

And according to a new report, he might never throw another one.

Kaepernick worked out with the Las Vegas Raiders in May. How’d it go?

“I heard it was a disaster. I heard one of the worst workouts ever,” NFL Hall of Famer Warren Sapp said during an appearance on VladTV last week.

Kaepernick, who knelt during the national anthem to protest racial injustice, last played on Jan. 1, 2017, for the 49ers.

Sapp — a defensive tackle who played for 13 seasons before being inducted to the Hall of Fame in 2013 — questioned why no footage was released showing the free-agent quarterback’s workout. “I’m wondering how the hell this happened and the tape didn’t get out, right?” he said before declaring he doesn’t think it’s likely Kaepernick returns to the NFL.

Kaepernick’s agent was reportedly “surprised” over Sapp’s assessment. “I guess Warren didn’t talk to the General Manager [Dave Zieger] or the head coach [Josh McDaniels],” Jeff Nalley told Pro Football Talk, according to the New York Post. “I spoke to the GM several times and he said they all thought Kap was in great shape and threw the ball really well and encouraged any team to call him about the workout and he would tell them the same.”

But an “insider” with the NFL Network said last month that the workout “went well.” “ On Colin Kaepernick’s workout with the #Raiders : Sounds like it went well and he impressed. The door is open…” Ian Rapoport wrote on Twitter.

The 49ers picked Kaepernick in the second round of the 2011 NFL Draft. He led the team to Super Bowl 47 in 2012 but lost in a close game to the Baltimore Ravens. He stayed with the 49ers until they released him in March 2017, and no other team has picked  him up since.

Kaepernick has stayed in the headlines since losing his NFL job. Over the Independence Day holiday in 2017, Kaepernick took to Twitter to protest celebrating the Fourth of July. In a minute-long video, Kaepernick was seen at the Cape Coast Castle, a former slave fort in Ghana. The footage also features the “Door Of No Return” at another slave outpost in Senegal. He questioned why African-Americans would celebrate the day when they were brought to America as slaves.

Julian Edelman understands harsh criticism of Jimmy Garoppolo from former Patriot Martellus Bennett

June 27, 2022 by www.cbssports.com Leave a Comment

USATSI

Retired tight end Martellus Bennett opened up about his time on the New England Patriots while speaking with Jason and Devin McCourty on their podcast Double Coverage With The McCourty Twins , and he got candid about one player in particular. Bennett had strong words for his former teammate Jimmy Garoppolo , calling out the quarterback for what he said was leaving the team in a vulnerable position.

Looking back on when Patriots quarterback Tom Brady was suspended to start the 2016 season, Bennett explained the team lost two games that entire campaign, which ended in a Super Bowl LI victory over the Atlanta Falcons. One of those games, a 16-0 loss to the Buffalo Bills in Week 4, was, in Bennett’s opinion, because “Jimmy Garoppolo was being a b—-.”

Bennett said: “He decided not to play right before the game. Jacoby (Brissett) came out and played with a f—ed up thumb and played his heart out, but Jimmy was just being a b—- about it all … you can’t win with a b—- for a quarterback, first of all.”

The 35-year-old alluded to this being a pattern with Garoppolo.

“That was the whole thing with him: He didn’t want to come out and do anything because his agent was trying to protect his body or some s— like that. Which, I can’t fault him for that,” Bennett added. “But like, you should have made that decision on Thursday. Now it’s Sunday.

Another member of that Patriots team, wide receiver Julian Edelman , weighed in on Bennett’s Garoppolo take while on the I AM ATHLETE podcast. Edelman went through what happened that season, saying Garoppolo injured his non-throwing shoulder. And despite Brissett injuring his thumb, Brissett went in to play for the team.

“I guess Jimmy was practicing and then decided not to play. And Jacoby [Brissett] played with no ligaments in his thumb, which — you can’t do that as a quarterback. You can’t grip. And if it’s your left [shoulder]…” Edelman said, suggesting that Garoppolo could have been able to play.

Speaking for the team, Edelman noted that it was not just Bennett who was upset with how Garoppolo handled the situation.

“A lot of guys got mad about it. A lot of guys got mad. I’m not gonna lie — I got mad about it. I sacrifice my body all day long. I was taking shots for this, numbing up that, ribs, broken ribs, shoulders, you know, Grade 3, hanging on by limbs, just to play. And you know, I can understand why Marty thinks like that.

Garoppolo is now on the San Francisco 49ers and is recovering from another shoulder injury. San Fransisco head coach Kyle Shanahan said previously that he expects Garoppolo to be traded, but that it is not a guarantee. The 30-year-old quarterback’s recovery is currently on schedule, and he said he expects to be back for training camp .
