Mohammed bin Salman vows to keep ‘sportswashing’ if it increases Saudi Arabia’s GDP by 1 per cent

September 21, 2023 by www.telegraph.co.uk Leave a Comment

The Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia has admitted for the first time that he has been “sportswashing” its image and “will continue doing so” by investing in the likes of Newcastle United , LIV Golf and bringing Cristiano Ronaldo to the country.

In a stunning disclosure, Mohammed bin Salman, the Gulf state’s de-facto leader, declared he would “continue doing sportswashing” due to its impact on the economy there and did not care what others thought of that.

Saudi Arabia has been accused of investing hundreds of millions of pounds in sport to distract attention from human rights violations committed by the country. They include the execution of 81 men in a single day last year, women’s rights abuses, the criminalisation of homosexuality, the restriction of free speech, and its role in the war in Yemen.

Bin Salman was also implicated personally in the brutal 2018 murder of dissident journalist Jamal Khashoggi , although the crown prince has denied any involvement.

“If sportswashing increases my GDP by one per cent then I will continue doing sportswashing,” he told Fox News.

Asked if he was “okay” with a term coined by critics of such activity, he replied: “I don’t care. I have one per cent growth GDP from sport and I’m aiming for another one-and-a-half per cent – call it whatever you want. We’re going to get that one-and-a-half per cent.”

Bin Salman currently chairs his country’s Public Investment Fund, which last year led a takeover of Newcastle and launched LIV Golf. PIF has also taken control of four of Saudi Arabia’s top clubs – Al-Ahli, Al-Hilal, Al-Ittihad and Al-Nassr – which have recently secured high-profile signings including Ronaldo and reigning Ballon d’Or holder Karim Benzema.

Bin Salman’s apparent admission of personal involvement in sportswashing raises further questions about the Newcastle takeover, which was only approved by the Premier League after PIF provided “legally-binding assurances” that the Saudi state would have no involvement in the running of the club.

The launch of LIV Golf also sparked civil war in the latter sport, which is controversially set to end with a merger between the rebel tour and the PGA.

Hailing the proposed deal, Bin Salman said: “That’s a game changer for the golf industry. You will not have competition and you will have focus on developing the game, and that’s good for the players and the fans who love golf.”

In addition to its investment in football and golf, Saudi Arabia has hosted an increasing number of major sporting events in recent years. It will stage Fifa’s Club World Cup in December for the first time and is expected to launch a bid for the World Cup itself either in 2030 or 2034.

It has now become a permanent fixture on the Formula 1 calendar, a go-to destination for some of the biggest world title fights in boxing, while it has recently secured a foothold in men’s tennis. However, a major backlash against proposals for it to stage the Women’s Tennis Association’s end-of-season WTA Finals saw it overlooked in favour of Cancun, Mexico.

The Premier League declined to comment on Bin Salman’s remarks.

In March, its chief executive, Richard Masters, told MPs he was unable to disclose whether it was investigating who had control of Newcastle and if it was re-examining its approval of the club’s takeover.

It followed the publication of documents in a US court case in which the PIF was described as “a sovereign instrumentality of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia” PIF Governor and Newcastle chairman Yasir Al-Rumayyan as “a sitting minister of the government” with “sovereign immunity”.

Record spending in the Saudi Pro League over the summer is being monitored closely by the Premier League, which set aside an unexpected agenda slot on the emerging league at its shareholders meeting with the 20 member clubs.

A source with knowledge of the meeting said the English top tier detailed the recent Saudi window, with  £239million spent on English-based talent alone. However, the Premier League is still spending significantly more than Saudi.

On EFL talent alone, clubs spent £331m this year. Overall, clubs spent a collective £2.351 billion but received £1.297bn in sales for a net spend of £1.055bn, a lower figure than summer 2022.

Felix Jakens, Amnesty International UK’s Head of Priority Campaigns and Individuals at Risk, said: “Saudi Arabia’s acquisition of high-profile sports businesses like Newcastle United or the PGA Tour are as much about sportswashing the country’s appalling human rights record as they are about adding one or two per cent to national GDP.

“The huge amounts of Saudi money currently sluicing through football and other sports are creating most of the headlines, but behind the drama of these transactions the Saudi authorities are busily cracking down on human rights.

“Not caring about the sportswashing label is one thing, but Mohammed bin Salman also doesn’t seem to care about the peaceful activists languishing behind bars in Saudi Arabia, the 196 people executed in the country last year, or the personal pain of the family of Jamal Khashoggi who are still desperately hoping to see justice done in his case.

“Mohammed bin Salman’s rule has been a truly dark time for human rights in Saudi Arabia, and no amount of talk about economic visions or of an expansion into new sporting ventures should be allowed to distract from that fact.”

Joe Joyce rules out retirement as he remains determined to challenge at ‘top level’ after rematch loss to Zhilei Zhang

September 25, 2023 by www.skysports.com Leave a Comment

Joe Joyce has dismissed any talk of retirement as he remains determined to “challenge at the top level” after his rematch loss to Zhilei Zhang.

The British contender was unable to regain the WBO interim heavyweight belt as he suffered a third-round knockout loss to Zhang at The AO Arena in Wembley on Saturday night.

Defeat also meant that Joyce could not reclaim a WBO mandatory title shot at unified champion Oleksandr Usyk, which he had earned before his first stoppage loss to Zhang in April.

  • Zhang defeats Joyce again in rematch

But SJAM Management will discuss the 38-year-old’s comeback in the next few days and are confident Joyce will again prove himself as one of the world’s best after wins over Joseph Parker, Daniel Dubois and Carlos Takam.

“Joe is an elite warrior who constantly challenges himself against those at the top level of heavyweight boxing – he has one of the best CVs of any active heavyweight,” said SJAM Management.

“He lost to an elite world-level fighter in Zhilei Zhang but will continue to challenge at the top level.

“We will meet as a team this week together with [promoters] Frank and George Warren and plan the way forward.”

Zhang has called for a fight against Tyson Fury after his rematch victory, while his co-manager Terry Lane has revealed American Deontay Wilder could be another potential opponent.

But Saudi Arabia, the UK and America are more likely locations for Zhang’s next fight, despite his rapidly growing popularity in China.

Homecoming fight in Zhang’s plans?

Lane told Sky Sports: “There’s just so many political and economic issues and hurdles to climb over to do that [stage a Zhang fight in China].

“We want to do it, we’re still exploring it. Actually the Warrens and [promotional team] Top Rank are helping us as well.

“But we’re going to make it happen, I just don’t know when.

“We’ll get across the finish line at some point.”

Inside jetset life of F1’s hottest new racer Jessica Hawkins – from TV star girlfriend to ‘nearly killing’ James Blunt

September 27, 2023 by www.thesun.co.uk Leave a Comment

BRITISH racing driver Jessica Hawkins is quite literally living life in the fast lane after becoming the first woman in five years to test a Formula One car.

The 28-year-old Aston Martin ambassador made history last week when she drove 26 laps of the Hungaroring in Budapest in the AMR21.

As Jessica breaks down barriers, we take a look at her jetset life on and off the track – from a James Bond role to the time she “nearly killed” James Blunt…

The former karting champion made her professional motorsport debut in British Formula Ford at Silverstone in 2014 in a one-off event, claiming two top 10 finishes.

She joined the Aston Martin F1 team in an ambassadorial role in 2021, and is a regular face around the paddock.

Prior to that she worked as a stunt driver, spending much of 2017 on Fast and Furious Live –  a global live-action show based on the film franchise, featuring super cars and acrobatic stunts from the movies – all performed live.

Jessica landed a plum role as a stunt driver in James Bond movie No Time to Die in 2021.

Sharing a string of behind-the-scenes snaps on Instagram, where she was seen driving a classic Aston Martin, she wrote: “The best experience with the best people in the world. An unforgettable experience!”

Her stunt driver career happened by chance, after a friend tagged her in a Facebook post advertising for a female driver with “good car control”.

“I stopped racing a good few years before W Series purely because I’d run out of budget to continue on my motorsport journey,” Jessica told the Mirror .

“Bond was actually my first movie. There was quite a lot of pressure, but I was confident in my ability and I had an incredible team around me.

“I’m super proud of what I’ve done.”

Rubbing shoulders with famous faces

Last year Jessica took part in a test drive for the new Range Rover Sport with Anthony Joshua .

In a clip the professional boxer was seen behind the wheel as Jessica sat in the passenger seat.

As part of the launch, Jessica completed a dramatic world-first climb up a flooded dam in Iceland in the motor.

She said: “Driving into it, knowing that a 90-metre drop was waiting for me at the bottom of the slope if things went wrong, made this the most challenging drive I’ve ever undertaken.”

Jessica also featured in James Blunt ’s music video for his 2021 single Love Under Pressure, starring as a driver attempting to kill the singer.

Posting a picture with the musician, she joked: “Not every day you find yourself trying to kill @jamesblunt for his new music video!”

Jessica was also part of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Pageant, behind the wheel of a Land Rover to drive down the Mall.

Glam TV star girlfriend

Jessica is in a relationship with Abbie Eaton, who is also a British racing driver.

Abbie is also a TV star, having starred as the test driver for the second and third series of Amazon’s The Grand Tour .

James May revealed that “she was the fastest and the best” driver that had been tested.

In 2015 she appeared on ITV’s Drive, coaching rapper Professor Green in a string of racing car challenges.

Jessica and Abbie, who both race in the W Series , have been together for over three-and-a-half years after meeting through the sport.

Abbie, 31, said: “I met Jess before the W Series. Motorsport is a small world, especially for the female drivers.

“I remember crossing paths with her at Goodwood and seeing what she was up to but when I came to W Series we got to know each other a bit more.”

When it comes to competition between them both, Abbie explained: “We’re always competitive – we’d be rubbish racing drivers if we weren’t.

“But if one of us is having a difficult time or our confidence is tested, we’re always there to support each other.

“Ultimately, we both want each other to do well. The dream is to be at the front together.”

Lavish trips

Jessica’s career has taken her around the world – and she often documents her work trips on Instagram.

Over the past few years she’s jetted off to the likes of Miami, Iceland, Mexico and Saudi Arabia.

She was also photographed at the Monaco GP earlier this year, posing with fellow racer and Sky Sports F1 presenter Naomi Schiff.

Jessica enjoys travelling during her time off, too. Last summer, she spent some time on the Greek island of Rhodes with Abbie.

The couple also made a trip to Wembley last summer to cheer on England’s Lionesses as they beat Norway 8-0 during the Euros.

‘Wild journey’

Jessica got into motorsport from a young age, telling Glamour that she “begged” her dad to let her have a go at karting after spotting a kart track while playing golf.

She explained: “Luckily for him, I was too small at the time. He wasn’t thrilled with the idea of me going karting.

“But then we went back a few months later, and they’d moved the height restriction down, much to my dad’s despair. I had a go and absolutely fell in love with it.”

She continued: “And I’ve never, ever intended, or it was never supposed to happen, that I’d still be here 20 years later having made or making a career from it.

“I’m not quite where I want to be just yet, but I’m very proud of where I have come.

“And a highlight of my career was obviously signing for Aston Martin Formula One team a couple of years ago. So yeah, it’s been a wild journey.”

Jessica’s performance at Silverstone in 2014 saw her picked up by Falcon Motorsport to compete in the 2015 MSA Formula Championship.

In 2016 she moved into single-make racing and competed in the Volkswagen Racing Cup series.

Jessica crossed over to the Mini Challenge in 2017 before returning to the VW Cup in 2018.

She moved to the W Series in 2019 and a year later, she made her debut in the 2020 British Touring Car Championship.

This week Jessica followed in the footsteps of Colombia’s Tatiana Calderon, who drove with with Sauber – now Alfa Romeo – in Mexico City in 2018, by taking the Aston Martin AMR21 for a spin.

Susie Wolff, the wife of Mercedes team principal Toto, was the last woman to compete in a practice session in 2015 – however a female driver has not started an F1 race since Italian Lella Lombardi in 1976.

Jessica admitted that it’s taken “blood, sweat and tears to get here”, but that it has been a “dream come true”.

She added: “I’ll keep pushing for more and, in the process, I want to inspire other women and let them know they should follow their dream no matter what it is.”

Fans joke ‘Infinite Goal Droughts’ are new Chelsea sponsor after £40m shirt deal

September 27, 2023 by www.dailystar.co.uk Leave a Comment

Fans have poked fun at beleaguered Chelsea after the Blues were finally given the green light on a £40million shirt sponsorship deal.

The Blues have been playing without a shirt sponsor since the start of the season as the Premier League vetted their deal sports data company Infinite Athlete. According to The Telegraph, the tie-up has been formally approved, meaning the company will appear on the front of their shirts soon.

The deal is reportedly worth in the region of £40million a year, with an official announcement by the club expected imminently. Little is known about Infinite Athlete, which has just 7,000 followers on X (formerly Twitter).

It’s bio on the social media platform reads: “Infinite Athlete creates a single technological foundation across all major sports, upon which innovative sports technology and products are built.”

While many Chelsea fans have welcomed the belated news, other supporters have taken it as an opportunity to mock the club following their abysmal start to the season. Alluding to the team’s run of three games without a goal, one quipped: “Infinite goal droughts.”

Another joked: “Infinite transfer budget more like.” One Chelsea fan bemoaned: “They should back out as why would any company want to sponsor a mess like our club?”

Another asked: “Any news on why the PL took over 2 months?” One fan, with a hint of sarcasm, commented: “Yeah!!! More money to spend on kids!”

Next up for the Blues is a home clash with high-flying Brighton in the Carabao Cup. Ahead of the game, Mauricio Pochettino insisted he wasn’t coming up mount pressure from the club’s owners, who have splurged more than £1billion since taking over at Stamford Bridge.

“It’s less hard than when we were in Southampton and Tottenham, trust me,” he said. “Believe me. The only thing we are missing is scoring goals, because the team is playing, if you see our first few months in Southampton and Tottenham, I think we are playing much better.

“We are doing much better here, but we are missing the most important [thing] in football – to score. But it’s not harder than the previous experience. It was different [at Tottenham]. The transformation was with us, in the way that we found the squad, with the club, we were working in six months, one year to change and design.

“Here, the plan was already made, and we arrived here and we tried to develop this project. When I arrived here, the plan had started to work. Now I am part of the plan. Of course I am responsible here also like in Tottenham, but I think it was a little bit different.”
