Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton in dead heat with surging Democratic challenger

August 15, 2022 by www.chron.com Leave a Comment

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton leads Democratic challenger Rochelle Garza by only two percentage points among registered voters, according to the latest poll released Sunday by UT Tyler and the Dallas Morning News.

Paxton is polling at 34 percent to Garza’s 32 percent, while eight percent said they support Libertarian candidate Mark Ash. Twenty-five percent said they support someone else or weren’t sure.

The results of the poll indicate that Paxton has lost significant support from independent voters in just the past few months: 50 percent of registered independents polled said they disapprove of Paxton’s job performance—a nine-point drop from independents’ responses to the same question in May.

As Paxton’s support with independents wanes, Garza continues to make inroads, staking out a five-point lead over Paxton among independents, according to Sunday’s poll. These voters could be the deciding factor in the race for attorney general as they make up the largest chunk of undecided voters , the Dallas Morning News reported.

The impetus behind the attorney general’s bleeding support remains unknown. Paxton came into the race a strong favorite despite a number of ongoing and well-documented legal entanglements. The Republican incumbent was indicted for alleged securities fraud in 2015, though the case has never gone to trial. Paxton is also the subject of an ongoing FBI investigation stemming from allegations made by former staffers that he abused his powers in favor of a campaign donor since late 2020.

Though he’s remained largely unscathed by either matter so far. Mark Owens, UT Tyler political scientist and director of the poll, said Paxton’s legal problems may be causing his support to drop amongst undecided and independent voters. “What Paxton is seeing is a real challenge of getting the swing voters and independent voters in Texas, against someone who might be a new face to Texas politics and is talking about bringing change to Austin,” Owens told the Dallas Morning News.

Ex-NFL Star’s Brother Wanted in Deadly Shooting at Pee Wee Football Game

August 14, 2022 by www.thedailybeast.com Leave a Comment

One day after a coaches’ disagreement during a youth football game in Lancaster, Texas escalated into a physical fight and fatal shooting, authorities are hunting for Yaqub Talib, the brother of former NFL cornerback Aqib Talib, who they’ve named as a “wanted suspect.”

Talib, 39, is charged with murder, the Lancaster Police Department told The Daily Beast on Sunday evening. The charge was first reported by TMZ Sports .

The shooting in Lancaster Community Park took place just before 9 p.m. on Saturday, police said. With children present on the field, multiple adults can be seen yelling in footage of the incident, with the sound of gunfire and screaming cutting in as someone in the crowd allegedly pulls out a gun.

One of the coaches was fatally wounded in the shooting, according to Lancaster police, who did not identify the victim. A number of reports on social media identified him as Michael Hickmon, with several people who appeared to be Hickmon’s family members changing their Facebook profile or cover photos in memoriam.

The family had not issued a public statement as of Sunday night.

But the Dallas County Medical Examiner’s office confirmed to The Dallas Morning News that a 43-year-old man named Michael Hickmon had died at a hospital on Saturday night. His cause of death was not immediately identified by the medical examiner.

Aqib Talib, who is three and a half years younger than his brother, was also at the game on Saturday, his lawyer confirmed to TMZ. The former cornerback “is very distraught and devastated over this terrible loss of life. He would like to convey his condolences to the family of the victim and to everyone who witnessed this unfortunate tragedy,” the attorney added.

Aqib was not named in the Lancaster police’s Sunday press release. In 2020, he retired after nearly 15 years in the league, having won Super Bowl 50 with the Denver Broncos. His career also included stints with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the New England Patriots, and the Los Angeles Rams. He currently works as a Fox Sports commentator.

In April 2015, both brothers were investigated by the Dallas Police Department after an incident of alleged aggravated assault involving a firearm at a nightclub. The police suspended their investigation the same month, and neither Aqib nor Yaqub was ever arrested or charged in connection with the case.

“Where we grew up, you fought quicker than normal,” Yaqub told The Denver Post in a 2015 profile on his brother. “You didn’t want anybody to see a weakness. It was the culture we grew up in… Looking back on it, I think it created an us-against-the world attitude.”

James Proche, a wide receiver from Dallas currently playing for the Baltimore Ravens, expressed grief and frustration over the shooting. “a gun to a youth football game?” he tweeted on Sunday. “Another life taken for no reason. another black kid growing up without a father. we gotta do better Dallas. the pride ain’t ever worth the consequences.”

‘Get out of my face’: Fight at US airport sees gate agent suspended

Thomas Shannon via Storyful/ AP
There have been more than 10 million views of the fight at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport.

A Spirit Airlines vendor at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport has suspended a gate agent involved in a violent altercation that went viral online.

An airport police report identifies the agent as Emmanuel Sullivan of Grapevine and the woman as Ayriana Davis of Fort Worth.

“Our vendor at DFW has suspended the agent. Spirit Airlines does not tolerate violence of any kind, and we are working with local law enforcement to investigate this matter,” the airline wrote in a statement.

The airport’s criminal investigations team declined to comment. It referred questions to airport spokeswoman Cynthia Vega, who said in an email: “We cannot release any additional information regarding this incident at this time as it remains under investigation.”

The video posted to Twitter shows Sullivan yelling at Davis in the airport, telling her not to touch him. The video has more than 10 million views as of Monday morning.

“You touched me first and then you got in my face,” Sullivan said in the video. “Don’t ever invade my personal space.”

“Get out of my face!” Davis screamed in response. She later said cameras saw the altercation and that the agent touched her.

Davis shoved Sullivan and called him homophobic and racial slurs, then reached out to hit him. Sullivan responded by running at her and hitting her as bystanders intervened.

In the police report, Sullivan said Davis exited the jet bridge and started yelling at him, saying there was no seat for her on the plane. He told her to get in line to speak to an agent, then took her boarding pass after she cut in line and became uncooperative, the report said.

Davis tried to grab her boarding pass back and Sullivan told police he pushed her back as she repeatedly advanced on him. He said he called police after she hit him on the head.

Davis told police that she “didn’t do anything” and Sullivan shoved her to the ground for no reason.

In an interview with The Dallas Morning News, Davis said she was waiting at a counter for an agent to help someone else when Sullivan repeatedly asked her to pick her boarding pass up. He then tore the pass in half, she said.

She said the pair began arguing and Sullivan hit her in the head before the Twitter video began.

Davis said she went to the hospital after the incident with a fractured left leg, abrasions on her right leg and other minor injuries. Photographs in the police report show a large abrasion on her right leg and swelling on her left leg.

Sullivan could not be reached for comment on Friday.

Davis denied using a racial slur, noting that she is Black. She said her language was because she was in “defence mode” after Sullivan hit her.

“I have no issues with any type of community,” she said.

Poll: Texas Gov. Greg Abbott 7 Points Ahead of Democrat Beto O’Rourke

August 16, 2022 by www.breitbart.com Leave a Comment

Gov. Greg Abbott (R-TX) maintains a solid seven-point lead over Democrat opponent Beto O’Rourke in the Texas Governor’s race, according to a poll.

The Dallas Morning News/ University of Texas at Tyler poll shows 45 percent of registered voters support Abbott as opposed to 38 percent who back O’Rourke, a failed senatorial and presidential candidate. Libertarian candidate Mark Tippetts and Green Party candidate Delilah Barrios both garnered three percent of the response, while another seven percent said they support another candidate. Abbott’s seven-point advantage is consistent with his Real Clear Politics average lead of 6.8 percent.

Among Latinos, the current poll shows Abbott trails O’Rourke by seven percentage points, at 38 percent and 45 percent, respectively. A smaller gap exists among independents, with 31 percent supporting Abbott versus 34 percent who are behind O’Rourke.

Voters believe Abbott is better equipped to handle essential issues. Concerning crime reduction, 43 percent stated Abbott would do a better job than O’Rourke as opposed to 30 percent who think the former congressman would fare better. Similarly, voters supported Abbott over O’Rourke on the issues of border security, handling the electrical grid, and improving the community. The one issue where more voters believe O’Rourke would do a better job is in bringing Texans together.

The poll also gauges how Texans feel about President Joe Biden. Just 41 percent of registered voters approve of Biden’s presidential performance, versus 56 percent who disapprove to varying degrees, which included 63 percent of independents and 54 percent of Latinos polled. An even lower number, 37 percent, approve of how he has managed the economy. The plurality of poll respondents, 48 percent, stated “Biden and Congress” are mostly to blame for inflation. Another 27 percent pointed to “[s]upply problems,” and 12 percent said Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is mostly responsible for inflation. Only nine percent believe Abbott and the state legislature bear most of the responsibility for inflation in the Lone Star State.

Before losing to Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) in the 2018 U.S. Senate race, O’Rourke served as the U.S. congressman for the state’s Sixth Congressional District from 2013-2019. After coming up short in his senatorial bid, O’Rourke launched a presidential campaign in 2020 but failed to secure a single delegate in the Democratic primary, unlike seven of his opponents.

The poll sampled 1,384 registered voters from August 1-7 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 2.6 percentage points.

Manhunt Ends For Ex-NFL Star’s Brother Suspected of Killing Youth Football Coach | The Daily Wire

August 15, 2022 by www.dailywire.com Leave a Comment

A retired NFL star’s brother suspected of gunning down a youth football coach in Texas Saturday turned himself in after a two-day manhunt.

Yaqub Talib, 39, is suspected of shooting Mike Hickmon dead after an age 9 and under kids’ game Saturday evening. Talib’s younger brother, former NFL star defensive back Aqib Talib, was reportedly at the game and witnessed the shooting, which was also caught on grim cellphone video.

The suspect “regrets the tragic loss of life but self-surrendered this morning so that he may have the chance to say his side of the story,” his attorney, Clark Birdsall, told The Associated Press.

WFAA reported that the Talib brothers are coaches for the North Dallas United Bobcats, a youth football team. Hickmon coached the Dragon Elite Academy team, and his 9-year-old son is believed to have watched his father’s murder at the Lancaster Community Park in Dallas County.

“I don’t know how to explain it to the kids,” said Dragons President Mike Freeman. “That’s the part that I’m stuck on right now. How do I explain it to them? Why? This is something that these kids will remember for the rest of their life.”

The game was called after supporters of the losing team threatened a referee. Cellphone video showed a man believed to be Talib confronting Hickmon as a melee breaks out on the field. At least five shots can be heard and then Hickmon is seen lying on the grass.

Aqib Talib, 36, a five-time Pro Bowl cornerback over a 12-year career that included stints with Tampa Bay, New England, Denver, and the Los Angeles Raiders, confirmed through his lawyer that he was at the youth game.

“Aqib was present when this unfortunate incident occurred and is very distraught and devastated over this terrible loss of life,” his lawyer told TMZ. “He would like to convey his condolences to the family of the victim and to everyone who witnessed this unfortunate tragedy.”

Aqib Talib, who retired in 2020, is a commentator for Fox Sports.
