Zawe Ashton, Hayley Squires And Daniel Mays Land Leads In BBC Adaptation Of ‘ Maryland ’

Lucy Kirkwood’s play Maryland is being adapted for the BBC and Zawe Ashton ( Fresh Meat ), Hayley Squires ( I, Daniel Blake ) and Daniel Mays ( Des , Line of Duty ) have landed the lead roles. The 30-minute adaptation of the Royal Court play will be called Mary and air on BBC Two and BBC iPlayer on July 20. Kirkwood and doc director Brian Hill are co-directors on the story, which is billed as a “artistic response to recent real-life events” such as the murders of British women Sarah Everard, Bibaa Henry, Nicole Smallman and Sabina Nessa, grappling with the violence facing women in their everyday lives. Ashton and Squires play women both called Mary who meet at a police station in the aftermath of their respective sexual assaults. Kirkwood said: “I wrote the original play as a howl against the way we have normalised violence against women as something to be accommodated by women themselves, rather than protested by all of us… I hope the film will give new oxygen to that protest, but I wish it was not still such an urgent conversation.”

Delphine Ernotte-Cunci And Petr Dvořák Re-Elected To EBU Posts

France Télévisions CEO Delphine Ernotte-Cunci and Czech Television Director General Petr Dvořák have been re-elected European Broadcasting Union (EBU) President and Vice-President, respectively. They will begin new two-year terms, with Mykola Chernotytskyi from Ukrainian member UA:PBC and Dr Katja Wildermuth from Bavarian broadcaster BR filing empty board positions. Furthermore, the EBU Executive Board has also confirmed that Director General Noel Curran has been appointed to serve a further six years. The EBU, which represents Europe’s most of public broadcasters, faces mounting challenges as traditional state-backed TV organizations come under pressure from monied streaming rivals. “One hundred years after the creation of the BBC, and therefore one hundred years after the invention of public service media, we must, again and again, emphasize our work on our values: mutual aid, solidarity, independence, impartiality in the face of threats to freedom and democracy,” said Ernotte-Cunci and Dvořák in a statement.

Citizen Groups: Empower ISPs and all of society vs child porn instead of sanctions

February 22, 2021 by globalnation.inquirer.net Leave a Comment

MANILA, Philippines – Consumer advocacy groups urged government to empower telecommunications companies and Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to work with all sectors to stop child pornography instead of more sanctions and regulations.

In reaction to government moves to impose sanctions for failure to fulfill duties mandated under Republic Act 9775 or the Anti-Child Pornography Act of 2009, CitizenWatch Philippines Co-Convenor Atty. Tim Abejo said, “The government should empower the telcos and ISPs as allies in fighting the societal menace of Online Sexual Exploitation and Abuse of Children (OSEAC) instead of imposing more sanctions and even more regulations.”

Empower ISPs and all of society vs child porn

Abejo said, “The best approach would be to work together in a systemic, whole-of-society approach that will harness all the technology and resources of government, law enforcement agencies, the academe, global and local NGOs, and technology experts to develop the responsive policies, and digital tools, in developing and implementing safety programs.”

“Harmonizing government laws to give telcos, ISPs and other online platforms enough authority to hunt down and purge harmful websites while protecting the data privacy of individual consumers will be more constructive,” Abejo said.

The President and his Cabinet has directed legislators to prioritize bills that would expand the inter-agency council on child pornography, exempt trafficking of persons from the Anti-Wiretapping Law, and impose more responsibilities on tourism establishments and ISPs to stop child pornography.

Globe Telecom has reported ongoing investments reaching US$2.7 million in their content filtering system which blocked a total of 2,521 domains with child porn related content as part of its ‘PlayItRight’ advocacy program targeting online child pornography and illegal content. Globe is also a partner of the “Kabataang Digital” project of the National Privacy Commission (NPC) to provide age-appropriate support and help children understand the nature of privacy and the implications of the digital environment on their privacy rights.

Globe’s Chief Sustainability Officer and Senior Vice President for Corporate Communications Yoly Crisanto said, “As a company whose business is connecting many Filipinos to the internet, Globe sees paramount importance in keeping its customers, particularly children, safe online.”

Converge ICT Solutions Inc. for its part installed a firewall system and Secure Domain Name Solution to block websites with child pornography material and malicious content. The broadband provider coordinates with the Department of Information and Communications Technology, The National Telecommunications Commission and the Department of social Welfare and Development to implement their Child Online Safeguarding Policy.

In a separate statement, Bantay Konsyumer, Kalsada, Kuryente (BK3) Convenor Louie Montemar said, “All consumers must unite to eliminate all lascivious sites destroying the lives of our children. We must remove this evil from cyberspace and must be vigilant every time we and our children go online.”

“As netizens, we have a responsibility to report child-pornography or other sites instigating terrorism, disinformation, and piracy of intellectual property,” Montemar said.

“We believe that civil society and government combining forces with the telcos and ISPs is the optimal strategy to attack the OSEAC problem,” Montemar said.

Snapchat launches paid version of the app

Snap Inc on June 29 launched a paid version of the Snapchat app in the U.S., priced at $3.99 a month, and a few other markets, in a major step away from a revenue model dependent mostly on advertising.

Snap, which had teased the subscription version, Snapchat+, earlier this month, said it would be available in Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Australia, New Zealand, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates at launch.

Social media firms are under pressure as companies cut back on ad budgets in response to rising costs and weakening consumer spending.

Last month, Snap said it would miss revenue and profit targets for the second quarter and would have to slow hiring and lower spending, sending its shares down over 40 percent in a single day.

Initial features in the paid version include the ability to change the app’s icon, see who re-watched a story and pin other users on chat history as a ”BFF”, Snap’s senior vice president of product, Jacob Andreou, told the Verge.
