Attorney General Ken Paxton says he will defend Texas sodomy law if Supreme Court revisits Lawrence vs. Texas

June 28, 2022 by www.chron.com Leave a Comment

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton last week seemingly expressed support for the Supreme Court potentially overturning past rulings on cases involving the LGBTQ community following the downfall of Roe v. Wade on Friday.

In a separate concurring opinion Friday, Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas questioned a number of the high court’s past rulings , including Obergefell v. Hodges, which established the right of same-sex couples to marry, and Lawrence vs. Texas—a 2003 decision in which the court ruled against the state of Texas regarding a 1973 law criminalizing the act of sodomy.

Thomas also mentioned Griswold v. Connecticut, which established the right of married couples to use contraception without government interference. “In future cases, we should reconsider all of this Court’s substantive due process precedents, including Griswold, Lawrence, and Obergefell. Because any substantive due process decision is ‘demonstrably erroneous,'” Thomas wrote. “We have a duty to ‘correct the error’ regarding these established in those precedents.”

During a Friday appearance on News Nation’s “On Balance with Leland Vittert,” Paxton said he would support the Supreme Court revisiting the cases mentioned by Thomas and defend Texas’ long-unenforced law against sodomy.

“I’m sure you read Justice Thomas’s concurrence where he said there were a number of other of these issues, Griswold, Lawrence and Obergefell he felt needs to be looked at again,” Vittert told Paxton. “Obviously the Lawrence case came from Texas… would you as attorney general be comfortable defending a law that once again outlawed sodomy? That questioned Lawrence again or Griswold or gay marriage? That came from the state legislature to put to the test what Justice Thomas said?”

“Yeah, I mean there’s all kinds of issues here, but certainly the Supreme Court has stepped into issues that I don’t think there’s any constitutional provision dealing with,” Paxton responded. “They were legislative issues and this is one of those issues and there may be more. So it would depend on the issue and dependent on what state law had said at the time.”

Vittert pressed on, asking, “For the sake of time here, you wouldn’t rule out that if the state legislature passed the same law that Lawrence overturned on sodomy, you wouldn’t have any problem then defending that and taking that case back to the Supreme Court?”

Paxton responded: “Yeah, look my job is to defend state law and I’ll continue to do that. That is my job under the Constitution and I’m certainly willing and able to do that.”

Asked if he would support the Texas Legislature testing the law, Paxton demurred. “I’d have to take a look at it,” the attorney general said. “This is all new territory for us so I’d have to how the Legislature was laid out and whether we thought we could defend it. Ultimately, if it’s constitutional, we’re going to go defend it.”

Paxton’s statements drew a swift rebuke from his Democratic opponent Rochelle Garza, who took to Twitter to call out the attorney general for his remarks during the interview. “Roe was just the first — they won’t stop till they roll back all of our civil rights,” Garza wrote. “We MUST kick Ken Paxton out of office this Nov. When I’m Attorney General, Texans will have a Civil Rights Division to protect ALL of our rights. Y’all means all. Period.”

Conservative leaders from other states have since expressed support for Justice Thomas’s opinion, including Utah Senate President Stuart Adams, who said he would support the Supreme Court reconsidering same-sex marriage. Utah’s constitutional ban on same-sex unions still exists and could be reinstated if the high court were to overturn its earlier decision.

Paxton’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment by the time of this writing.

Texas Instruments India launches mentorship programme to bring more women into semiconductor sector
CHENNAI:
Texas Instruments (TI), a global leader in semiconductors, has launched WiSH – Women in Semiconductors and Hardware – a mentorship programme for female engineering students from across India.

The month-long programme, which happened in June, aimed to give the students an exposure to semiconductors and encourage them to pursue a career in this industry. More than 40 students from across 18 colleges including IIT-Madras , IIT – Kharagpur, BITS, NIT -Surathkal and Delhi Technological University participated in the programme.

The programme was conducted as a mix of virtual and in-person mentoring, and involved hands-on experience designing a chip through simulation experiments, lab visits and technical talks.

The final week was spent at the TI campus in Bengaluru where participants interacted with other engineers to understand more about how chips are made, the different functions that contribute to making a product, and the opportunities available to them once they step into TI.

“Today, 40% of STEM graduates in India are women, but less than half opt for careers in semiconductors and hardware. This is because of several reasons including lack of information on careers in hardware, misplaced belief that hardware is tougher, lack of mentorship opportunities and very few visible engineering role models,” Shubhra Bhandari, director of human resources at TI, said.

Madhumitha A V, a WiSH programme participant from NIT-Trichy said that she applied to the programme out of curiosity and WiSH was an eye-opener. “I now know a lot more about the world of semiconductors, the kind of technology challenges we get to work on and the fact that many women engineers have built very successful careers in this industry. While I am still weighing my options, a career in hardware is definitely a possibility,” she said.

Global semiconductor company Texas Instruments designs, manufactures, tests, and sells Analog and embedded processing chips for markets such as industrial, automotive, personal electronics, communications equipment, and enterprise systems.

Josh Duggar officially moved to Texas prison notorious for violence, overcrowding & disease to serve 12-year sentence

June 28, 2022 by www.thesun.co.uk Leave a Comment

JOSH Duggar has officially been transferred to a Texas prison notorious for violence, overcrowding and disease to serve his 12-year sentence.

The Sun can exclusively reveal Josh , 34, will serve his 151-month child pornography sentence at FCI Seagoville in Dallas, Texas.

The facility is low-security and houses 1,751 inmates in their detention center and satellite camp, according to the Bureau of Federal Prisons.

Seagoville has a Sex Offender Management Program (SOMP) and in 2018 it was estimated that around 40% of the inmates there were sex offenders.

The Sun previously reported Josh was transferred last week after he was sentenced to 12 years behind bars for receiving child pornography on May 25.

COVID FEARS

The Sun previously reported Seagoville made headlines in 2020 for having over 72% of its population infected with COVID.

CNN reported in August of 2020 that at least three inmates had died at that point, with one of the inmate’s family members calling the facility a “petri dish.”

“Hall repeatedly punched, kicked and stomped on the victim’s face with his shod feet, a dangerous weapon, while yelling a homophobic slur.

“The victim lost consciousness during the assault and suffered multiple lacerations to his face. The victim also sustained a fractured eye socket, lost a tooth, and fractured other teeth,” the release read.

In another instance, according to CBS , a correction officer was arrested for abusive sexual contact with an inmate at FCI Seagoville, the officer resigned and was sentenced to one year behind bars.

In another instance, the Bureau of Prisons and the Seagoville warden at the time were sued by an inmate over the conditions within the facility in a civil rights action.

In a complaint reviewed by The Sun, the inmate alleged that overcrowding exacerbated a number of conditions inmates faced inside the prison.

The inmate, Jed Lineberry, said the overcrowding added to an “increased exposure to a violent environment ,” among a slew of other allegations in the federal filing.

His claims were ultimately dismissed since he had already been transferred to the Texarkana facility.

REUNITED

The release comes after Josh’s wife Anna , 34, revealed she is going on a “road trip” to see her “bestie.”

Anna posted on her Instagram: “Officially 34. 14 years since I said, ‘Yes.’ Road-tripping to visit my bestie.

“‘Even if’ by Mercy Me on repeat. ‘Jesus will cling to you. Come what may.’”

JOSH’S SENTENCING

Honorable Judge Timothy L Brooks sentenced Josh to 151 months in prison on May 25 .

According to The Sun’s court reporter, Josh appeared stoic as he received his sentence , which also includes $50,100 in fines.

As he read his decision, the judge called Josh’s crimes “the sickest of the sick” to the packed courtroom.

He then said to Josh: “You have done some very bad things. But in your life as a whole, you’ve done good things… The true test of a man’s character is what a man does when no one is watching.”

Referring to Josh’s insistence that he’s innocent, the judge continued: “I find it aggravating about the lack of responsibility.”

Judge Brooks recommended Josh participate in the Bureau of Prison’s sex offender treatment program.

In the molestation police report, Jim Bob told authorities his son was sent to a Christian counseling program where he did “manual labor and had counseling.”

Why Texas commit Arch Manning is not unanimous No. 1 2023 QB

June 27, 2022 by 247sports.com Leave a Comment

Arch Manning is the No. 1 overall recruit in both the 247Sports and 247Sports Composite rankings. However, national recruiting editor Brandon Huffman isn’t set on Manning as the top quarterback in the class. He joined The Solid Verbal to explain hesitancy to put Manning No. 1 on his personal rankings.

“I think he’s good. I think he’s very good,” Huffman said. “I think this is the best quarterback group I’ve seen in that top five group, maybe the depth isn’t as good as recent years. But this is the best one through five that I’ve seen. And I don’t want to call myself an Arch hater at all because I’m not. But you know, sometimes they say your best ability is availability. I’m a firm believer, I like to see these guys in person before I fully commit and go all in. And I’ve seen Malachi Nelson and ( Nicholaus Iamaleava ), Jaden Rashada , Dante Moore . But I haven’t seen Arch enough to just go ‘Oh, yeah, he’s a sure thing.’ You watch the film, you see all those things, he looks good, but I kind of want that in person eye test to be the final checkmark. So until then … I am such a fan of Nico as a quarterback that it would take a lot for Arch to allow me to be able to catapult him to the top of my personal rankings.”

Before seemingly narrowing down to those top three schools, others like LSU and Florida were in the mix for Manning, as well as an earlier recruitment by Clemson. The University of Virginia also, briefly, popped into the sweepstakes for the top prospect in next year’s recruiting class, per 247Sports.

“This all unfolded authentically and organically,” Isidore Newman head coach Nelson Stewart told 247Sports . “He’s a super special kid and I’m confident in his decision. I’m excited he can smile and have a great senior year. It’s certainly been a journey unlike any other.”

Cooper Petagna, a national recruiting analyst for 247Sports, recently evaluated Manning at the start of the month. Petagna gave a lengthy assessment of Manning’s ability, which can be located on his 247Sports profile page . In addition to the analysis, Petagna projects Manning to be a top-10 pick in the NFL Draft one day.

“Displays excellent arm talent, showing the ability to make every throw on the field within the pocket,” Manning’s evaluation reads in part. “Shows the ability to drive the ball down the field and play with velocity. Excels as an intermediate passer, displaying the ability to consistently deliver the ball accurately and on time while playing with anticipation. Throws an exceptional deep ball, flashing outstanding touch and ball placement allowing him to throw his receivers open.”

Texas is expected to play former five-star and Ohio State quarterback Quinn Ewers at quarterback during the 2022 season, before the starting position becomes a potential battle for 2023 and beyond. Manning has not yet announced if he will enroll early at Texas.
