10 Stand-Alone Star Wars Movies We Actually Want

June 10, 2014 by gizmodo.com Leave a Comment

Disney has put the Star Wars movie-making machine in full gear, and we already have Han Solo and Boba Fett movies in the works. But do we really need more of these two guys? There are so many other great characters to explore, and so many genres that would perfectly adapt to the Star Wars universe so easily. Here are 10 of our ideas — add yours in the comments!

1) The Adventures of Young Lando Calrissian

It’s not that we have a problem with Han Solo. We just think Solo has already had his share of screen time, and, even if you’re chucking his many, many, many adventures in the Expanded Universe out entirely, we still have a pretty good sense of what his young life was like. But what about Lando? All we know about him is that he used to be Han’s buddy, which means Han could guest-star while giving the spotlight to one of the Star Wars universe’s most criminally underused characters — and one without the baggage of being one of the original trilogy’s main three heroes. Also: Cast Donald Glover. It’s the only thing that makes sense.

2) A Darth Vader Horror Movie

We saw Anakin Skywalker become Darth Vader, and the next time we checked in with the Dark Lord of the Sith, he was Grand Moff Tarkin’s lap dog in A New Hope . But other than hijacking the Princess’s spaceship, crashing a Bespin City dinner party, and cutting off Luke’s hand, Vader never really got to show us how badass he supposedly was. Why not have a film about him hunting down the last of the Jedi, where the Jedi are the protagonists, and Vader is the unstoppable killer hunting them down? This worked marvelously well when it was used to introduce General Grievous in Genndy Tartakovsky’s Clone Wars cartoon (above), and a Star Wars horror movie sounds pretty great by itself, too.

3) Seven Samurai Jedi

And speaking of things we didn’t see much of in the prequels, the Jedi being awesome is one of the most egregious. Sure, Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan fought Darth Maul, and a crowd of Jedi had a big battle of Geonosis, but those were more spectacle than something that gave us any sense of what powerful warriors the Jedi are supposed to be. We need a movie focusing on the Jedi — not previously established characters, but just regular Jedi — doing something simultaneously noble, heroic and badass so we can actually see the Jedi in their prime. One of the first rumored Star Wars stand-alone movies was a homage to Akira Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai , in which a group of Jedi would defend a village (planet?) against a large group of marauders. Still sounds good to us.

4) A Jabba the Hutt Gangster Movie

Look, I know Jabba the Hutt has almost been as overused as Boba Fett in the original two trilogies, but hear me out. Imagine a Guy Ritchie-style gangster movie — you know, back when Guy Ritchie was directing awesome gangster movies — where the main boss is Jabba the Hutt. Now imagine Han Solo as a young smuggler who has a scheme of his own, gets in bad with the boss, and has to go on the run. Not only would this give us a young Han Solo adventure with more focus than simply running over his biography, it would be very cool to have some of Star Wars ‘ criminal elements fleshed-out beyond just “smuggling” and “dropping disgruntled employees into Rancor pits.”

5) Captain Rex and his Clone Commandos

One of the greatest characters and storylines the Clone Wars cartoon gave us was that of Captain Rex, the clone commander who led Torrent Company and the 501 st Legion through some of the toughest battles in the war. Not only were these war stories exciting, they helped humanize the clones in a way the live-action movies never could, giving them individual personalities, but also showing how losses mattered to those around them. We deserve to get to see that on-screen. If somehow that sounds too artsy for Star Wars , just imagine Inglourious Basterds but with Clone Troopers instead of Brad Pitt’s team and Battle Droids instead of Nazis. Who the hell wouldn’t want to watch that?

6) Mon Mothma’s 11

You know who could use some fleshing out? A female Star Wars character. And since Leia’s life is pretty much accounted for and all the female Jedi are dead, that pretty much leaves Rebel Alliance leader Mon Mothma. But there’s so much to work with! How did she join the Rebellion? He did she get to be in charge? How many scrapes with the Empire has she been in? A bunch, we’re guessing. And if a Mon Mothma bio-pic isn’t Disney’s cup of tea — and let’s admit it probably isn’t — why not cast her as the George Clooney, Ocean’s 11 -style mastermind of the Bothans who stole the codes to get the Rebel onto Endor in RotJ ? Give her a heist pic, and an elite team of Bothans who will sacrifice their lives to get there mission done. Besides sounding massively entertaining, it would also be nice to finally know what the hell a Bothan is.

7) Darklighter

Luke’s childhood friend Biggs isn’t going to crack anybody’s Top 10 Star Wars characters list. But a Biggs movie has the potential to show us part of the Empire/Rebel war that we’ve never seen before. Like Luke was planning on doing, Biggs left Tatooine to join the Imperial Academy as train as a Stormtrooper or a TIE Fighter pilot; he only defected to the Rebels later. Being able to see and compare the Imperial war machine to the nascent Rebellion could bring a lot of depth to the war, and there could be an interesting parallel or two as well. Of all the movie characters, Biggs is the only person we know who’s been on both sides of the conflict, and this cinematic opportunity shouldn’t be missed.

8) An Ahsoka Movie

Even more so than Biggs, Ahsoka — the feisty Jedi padawan assigned to Anakin Skywalker during the Clone Wars — is utterly unique in the Star Wars universe. Why? Well, mostly, because she’s the one person who grew disillusioned with both the Jedi and the Republic-turned-Empire that didn’t turn completely evil while doing so. Interestingly, this makes her one of the few sane people in the Star Wars galaxy, because she recognizes that the Jedi of the prequel trilogy are actually kind of terrible — at the mercy of the government, devoted to rules as opposed to compassion, and so full of themselves they can’t see a Sith Lord when he’s right in front of their faces. Not only would I love to see how and where Ahsoka’s adventures would continue, her existence is a critical part of Anakin’s story, and thus there needs to be some kind of resolution there. We’re told Darth Vader hunted down the Jedi and killed them; do you really think he would forget about the Padawan that served him during the entirety of the Clone Wars?

9) Anything Knights of the Old Republic

Anything. Seriously. Any of the videogames, any of the comics, just give us a story set in the Old Republic era and go nuts. By setting the mythos free of all of the modern Star Wars trappings, the possibilities are limitless, and yet the universe is still so familiar to Star Wars fans that audiences would have no problem still getting invested in the stories. Hell, if Disney plays its cards right it can churn out a “modern” Star Wars movie and an Old Republic-set movie every alternating six months or so. Double the franchise, double the $.

10) The Adventures of Young Elan Sleazebaggano

Okay, maybe the need for a biopic of the ridiculously named asshole who was trying to sell Obi-Wan Kenobi “deathsticks” in the bat in Attack of the Clones isn’t as great for other people as it is for me. But I really, really need to know how anyone, even in the shady areas of Coruscant, can make a living selling a product called “deathsticks.” It’s a stick that kills you. What is Sleazebaggano’s secret?!

It’s possible the highly anticipated KOTOR remake is still alive and this is just some weirdness on the part of Sony’s social media department. It also might be the case that the project, which debuted as a PS5 exclusive, has all but been canceled amid ongoing development issues and massive budget cuts at parent publisher Embracer. Sony and Embracer did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

A new gamer lawsuit rises . Three months after Aspyr said it was abandoning promised DLC for the remaster of Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords on Nintendo Switch , someone is suing the publisher for failing to make good on its original promise or to offer a refund when that was no longer possible.

The class-action lawsuit ( via The Gamer ) was filed by Malachi Mickelonis earlier this summer and accuses Aspyr of fake advertising. He apparently bought the game but never actually played it. The lawsuit alleges he was waiting for the “Restored Content DLC” before starting the game on Switch. Oops.

KotOR 2 came to the Nintendo handheld hybrid on June 8, 2022, and the studio promised to eventually add the “Restored Content” as DLC for the game down the road. Originally brought to the PC version via mods, the “Restored Content” pack is essentially a fan-made “director’s cut” of the beloved but much beleaguered 2004 Star Wars RPG. “It’ll drop in Q3 2022,” the studio tweeted on several occasions. It did not .

Instead, the studio announced back in June of this year that it was no longer moving forward with the DLC pack promised at launch. Aspyr offered players free codes for the other remastered Star Wars games on Switch as an apology. The news came after the reports the studio was struggling with its planned, ground-up remake of the first Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic for PlayStation 5. A year later, the Texas-based studio is probably in an even worse place as parent company Embracer begins to implode , laying off developers across its bloated portfolio of studios.

“[Malachi Mickelonis] felt completely duped and was upset because he had relied on Defendants’ representations that the Restored Content DLC would be released for KotOR,” the new lawsuit reads. “In fact, Plaintiff did not even play KotOR after purchasing it, instead choosing to wait until the Restored Content DLC was released. But Defendants never did. Plaintiff would potentially be interested in purchasing other games with Restored Content DLC from Defendants’ in the future if they have the advertised content, are not deceptively advertised, and accordingly priced at fair market value without being artificially inflated due to the deceptive advertising.”

The class action lawsuit means anyone else who bought the game can join it, though it’s not clear who else has or will. KotOR 2 was $20 when it first came out on Switch. It’s currently on sale for $7.50.

Canceled Star Wars: KOTOR 2 DLC For Switch Has Spawned A Class-Action Lawsuit

September 28, 2023 by www.gamespot.com Leave a Comment

A class-action lawsuit related to Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II on Nintendo Switch has surfaced, with plaintiffs seeking restitution and damages for what the lawsuit claims were illegal marketing and advertisements used by developer Aspyr Media and its parent company Saber Interactive.

As spotted by The Gamer , the lawsuit was originally filed on July 8 in the state of California on behalf of the plaintiff Malachi Mickelonis and other customers in the state who felt they had been deceived by Aspyr following their purchase of KOTOR II on Switch.

Aspyr’s port of Star Wars: Knight of the Old Republic II for Nintendo Switch released last year , and initially promised “Restored Content DLC” for the original Xbox-era RPG developed by Obsidian Entertainment was “coming soon.” According to the lawsuit, when asked when the DLC would arrive by fans on Twitter, Aspyr in the summer of 2022 stated the DLC would release in Q3 2022.

That turned out to not be the case. Earlier this year Aspyr canceled plans for the DLC and instead gave KOTOR II players on Switch the option to select a free Star Wars game from a list of titles like Star Wars: Republic Commando , Star Wars: The Force Unleashed , or another copy of Knights of the Old Republic II for PC via Steam. Mentions of the DLC were removed from the game’s Nintendo eShop store page and its initial announcement trailer.

The Restored Content DLC was a major selling point for the Switch port, with the game’s cut content having previously only been available unofficially on PC thanks to modders. According to the lawsuit, Mickelonis is said to have purchased the Switch version of KOTOR II specifically for the DLC, and was waiting to play the game until the Restored Content DLC arrived. When the DLC was canceled and Mickelonis was unable to receive a refund, he sought legal action in July 2023, a few weeks after the announcement that the DLC was canceled.

The lawsuit alleges that Mickelonis and other consumers were misled by Aspyr and Saber’s “unlawful, unfair, and fraudulent business practices,” and that the two companies “have been and will continue to be unjustly enriched by the receipt of ill-gotten gains from customers.” According to the lawsuit, Mickelonis and other class action members “would not have purchased KOTOR if it were not for the misrepresentations” of facts on Aspyr’s part, and that the company intentionally deceived customers in order to market KOTOR II at “above-market prices” and sell more copies. KOTOR II on Switch currently retails for $15. On Steam , KOTOR normally sells for $10.

Mickelonis and other plaintiffs participating in the class-action lawsuit are seeking to have attorneys’ fees and costs covered, to force Aspyr and Saber to “cease and desist from selling and distributing KOTOR with deceptive and false advertising,” and to receive “such other relief as this Court find just equitable and proper, including, but not limited to, the remedy of disgorgement.” Aspyr and Saber have until October 4 to respond to the complaint.

Star Wars KOTOR 2 Restored Content DLC Canceled On Switch

June 5, 2023 by www.gamespot.com Leave a Comment

Aspyr has announced that the Restored Content DLC for Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II – The Sith Lords on Nintendo Switch has been canceled.

In a recent Twitter post, the studio thanked the KOTOR community for its “immense passion and continued support” before revealing that the planned DLC for KOTOR II is no longer in development.

“Sadly, today we’re announcing that the Restored Content DLC for the Nintendo Switch version of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II – The Sith Lords will not be moving forward for release,” Aspyr said. Aspyr didn’t provide the reason behind the sudden cancelation but has promised players who purchased KOTOR II prior to the announcement a free game to make up for the news.

— Aspyr (@AspyrMedia) June 3, 2023

“We’d like to thank everyone for their continued support by providing a complimentary video game key to players that purchased Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II – The Sith Lords on Nintendo Switch before this announcement,” Aspyr said.

Players are able to choose from a selection of Star Wars games, including the Steam version of Knights of the Old Republic II. The remaining games on the list are only available for Switch, including Knights of the Old Republic, The Force Unleashed, Republic Commando, Jedi Knight Academy, and more.

In order to redeem their free game, users need to visit support.aspyr.com and “submit a request with your Nintendo Switch proof of purchase attached.”

The Restored Content DLC was a fan volunteer effort to mod missing KOTOR II content that was approved by Aspyr in 2015. Modder zbyl2–an original programmer who was part of the effort–took to the KOTOR subreddit (via Eurogamer ) following the announcement to say, “Aspyr did nothing wrong. Quote me on that. Shame it ended the way it did.”

The modder explained to users who have been sharing their theories that the cancellation had nothing to do with “higher ups not wanting to give credit to the modding team,” adding that Aspyr “was great to work with and they offered to credit the whole team long before I even asked about it.”

There have been issues with third-party Switch games recently, with Midnight Suns being canceled and Hogwarts Legacy being delayed multiple times .

Aspyr is currently working on Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Remake for PC and PS5. The game is reportedly two years away , according to parent company Embracer Group.
