George Floyd Murder Trial Expected To Start Monday, Will Be Televised Live By Court TV

March 7, 2021 by deadline.com Leave a Comment

The eyes of the world will focus on Minneapolis this Monday, as the trial of a former police officer accused of killing George Floyd is expected to begin.

Protests are already underway in the city and its surrounding neighborhoods, which were devastated in the aftermath of Floyd’s death. As widely reported, Officer Derek Chauvin faces murder charges for kneeling on Floyd’s neck for nine minutes.

Court TV will televise the trial live, and reports indicate it’s likely to be among the most closely watched legal events in recent US history. Minneapolis and cities around the world saw sometimes violent protests and looting in the wake of Floyd’s death.

Minneapolis has been barricading and boarding up in anticipation of the trial. Protests at the governor’s mansion in St. Paul occurred yesterday, with more protests planned for Sunday and Monday outside the Minneapolis courthouse.

One possible delay stands in the way of Monday’s start to the trial. A state appellate court ordered a lower court judge to revisit his decision to drop third-degree murder charges against Chauvin. A guilty verdict on that charge, which alleges someone acted “without regard for human life,” carries a sentence of up to 25 years.

As of now, Chauvin faces charges of second-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter. Three other officers present at the scene, J. Alexander Kueng, Thomas K. Lane and Tou Thao, face charges of aiding and abetting murder and manslaughter. They will be tried in the summer.

All four have been fired by the Police Department.

Does Apple TV support Chromecast?

May 23, 2016 by www.macworld.co.uk Leave a Comment

Does Apple TV support Chromecast?

No – the Apple TV doesn’t support Chromecast . There’s an HDMI port on the back of your Apple TV and you could in principle plug your Chromecast dongle into that, but it wouldn’t achieve anything. And you can’t run or access Chromecast software on the fourth-gen Apple TV.

In this article we explain why Apple TV doesn’t support Chromecast (and why that doesn’t matter), and discuss the chances of the two systems working together in the future.

What are Apple TV and Chromecast? What are the differences between them?

They are media streaming devices, primarily. Both devices plug into a TV, transforming it from a TV into a smart TV – they’re designed to either stream TV, films and video directly to the TV from online, or to mirror whatever’s on the screen of a linked device such as a tablet or phone.

Apple TV and Chromecast share a number of similarities, then, and this is why the question of whether one supports the other is slightly odd: they don’t need to support each other, because they’re doing the same job a lot of the time. It’s a bit like asking if the iPhone 6s supports the Samsung Galaxy S7 – not the Android OS that runs on the S7, but the Galaxy hardware itself. It’s sort of a meaningless question.

The two devices (the Apple TV and Chromecast, not the iPhone and Galaxy S7) take very different physical forms: the Apple TV looks a bit like a black version of the Mac mini and sits in the position of a set top box, while the Chromecast dongle is far smaller and just plugs unobtrusively into the HDMI port of your television. But they’re doing, or enabling, many of the same jobs.

Does Apple TV support Chromecast?

One difference is that the Apple TV is an independent device that can run the show itself, whereas the Chromecast either mirrors media from another device over Wi-Fi or, if it’s streaming media directly from online, is at least controlled by another device. Generally you’ll control the Chromecast from an Android phone, iPhone or PC.

(There’s a Remote app for iOS that lets you control the Apple TV from an iPhone, and this is a very handy app to have. But the Apple TV doesn’t need to be controlled by another device. It has its own remote, in fact.)

The Chromecast is also a lot cheaper than the Apple TV. And comes in multiple colours.

Does Apple TV support Chromecast?

Why doesn’t Apple TV support Chromecast?

The Apple TV and Chromecast are both hardware products first and foremost (albeit with extensive first- and third-party software backing). Google makes versions of its software products for iOS and Mac OS X, and Apple has made Apple Music available on Android, but it’s virtually unknown for the two rival companies to make hardware products interoperable.

There isn’t a lot of reason why they would make an exception in this case. Apple doesn’t want you to plug the Chromecast dongle into your Apple TV – it would prefer you to use its own streaming services. Google doesn’t stand to gain anything by you plugging the Chromecast dongle into the Apple TV.

Moreover, neither do you, and this is key. If you’ve got a Chromecast dongle, you can plug it directly into your TV: you don’t need to use the Apple TV as an intermediary.

How to watch any video on Apple TV: AirPlay and VLC Player for tvOS

February 10, 2017 by www.macworld.co.uk Leave a Comment

The Apple TV is a great media streamer, but the built-in storage is used exclusively for the operating system, apps and related media files – so how can you watch your videos on the Apple TV? While AirPlay is an easy way to stream videos from your iOS or macOS device to the Apple TV, VLC Player can handle just about any kind of video file you throw at it. Here, we explain how to watch any video on Apple TV.

How to watch any video on Apple TV: AirPlay

Of course, the easiest way for iOS and macOS owners to play videos on the Apple TV is to use AirPlay. As well as allowing you to play local files on your iOS device, AirPlay also lets you stream video from various websites and apps without any issue. In iOS 10, simply find the video you want to play and swipe up from the bottom of the home screen to access the Control Center. From there, swipe right to access the media control menu, tap the Output (usually labelled iPhone) and select Apple TV as the playback device.

Once you’ve selected the Apple TV as your output, simply play the video and after a few seconds, it should appear on the TV.

It’s slightly more complicated on macOS, and the experience isn’t always as good. Unless you have a QuickTime-compatible video file, you’re limited to mirroring your entire Mac display to your Apple TV. As it’s mirroring everything from your desktop, it doesn’t buffer video in the same way as on an iOS device and thus, users can experience lag and sync issues, especially with higher-quality videos.

If you do have a QuickTime-compatible video file, open it in QuickTime and select the AirPlay button on the media controls and select your Apple TV as the output.

How to watch any video on Apple TV: VLC Player

Of course, AirPlay isn’t always going to be the best way to play videos on the Apple TV – especially when you get into more specialist video files that aren’t supported on iOS. But don’t fret, as there’s another option available in the form of the VLC player app for Apple TV. VLC, the media player app available for several platforms, is famous for being able to handle just about any kind of media file that you can throw at it.

Got a weird MP4 file you can’t open? VLC will play it. MKV not supported by your media player? VLC supports it. You get the idea! The question is, how do you get your video files from your Mac to your Apple TV using VLC? Well, there’s three ways you can do it:

Local Network

The first option is to use your Local Network to connect, and is the easiest way to play videos on your Apple TV from your Mac if they’re both on the same network. As pro users will already know, VLC supports Universal Plug and Play media servers (aka Plex) and FTP servers running on your local network, allowing you to easily browse your server-stored media library. However, not everybody has enough money to cough up for a NAS drive – what are they to do?

Thankfully, Plex offers a Mac app that essentially turns it into a UPnP media server and thus, makes your video library available via VLC on the Apple TV. Simply download Plex for Mac here, follow the on-screen instructions and point the app to the folder on your Mac where your video files are stored. Then, on the VLC app, select the “Local Network” tab and select your server. You should be taken through to a list of available movies, and they should then play without any issue.

Remote Playback

Okay, so what if you’re not so keen on running a media server from your Mac? The second option is Remote Playback, and is a feature that is offered by VLC natively. Within the VLC app for Apple TV, navigate to the Remote Playback screen and make note of the two URLs you’re provided with. One will be in the form of a local IP address, while the other should be an easy-to-read URL.

Type either one of the URLs provided into your browser on your Mac and you’ll be presented with a web page that allows you to drag and drop videos into it to enable big-screen playback. Simply drag your chosen video onto the web page, give it a few seconds to transcode it and it should then start playing on your Apple TV.

Network Stream

The third option is the most complex, as it requires you to already have an FTP or web server on the internet with media files stored on it and is only recommended for pro users. If you know the URL of the video file you want to play on the Apple TV, simply head to the VLC app and select the Network Stream tab. Select Enter URL to Play and enter the address of the video file (this can be fairly long sometimes!), press OK and assuming you typed the URL in correctly, playback should begin.

How to stream from Android to Apple TV

April 26, 2017 by www.macworld.co.uk Leave a Comment

One of the biggest draws of the Apple TV is AirPlay, the ability to wirelessly stream audio and video from an iOS device to an Apple TV. It has been a key feature of the media streamer for years, and allows users to showcase everything from holiday snaps to the latest episode of Game of Thrones on the big screen quickly and easily.

However, as is typical with Apple, there’s a walled garden surrounding AirPlay on the Apple TV, and is restricted to Apple devices only. Or so Apple thought. It turns out that there are a number of ways that Android users can utilise AirPlay on the Apple TV to enable streaming from an Android to an Apple TV.

While admittedly it’s more difficult now than it has been in the past, there are still a handful of workarounds available online. Here, we explain why your streaming app may have recently stopped working, along with suggestions on how to stream from Android to Apple TV.

Why has my third-party streaming app stopped working?

The ability to stream audio and video to Apple TV from Android devices isn’t new – in fact, there have been apps available on Google Play that offer the functionality since 2011. While there were stability issues here and there, the apps generally performed quite well and offered something similar to what iOS users have with AirPlay.

All was well for years , until Apple decided to push out a new tvOS update (10.2) for the fouth-generation Apple TV that effectively killed the functionality for all third-party apps. Why? Apple decided that the Apple TV must demand device verification before offering AirPlay streaming services, which should make the functionality more secure.

However, the downside is that the verification can only be provided by Apple hardware. This means that the plethora of streaming apps for both Android and Windows devices have ceased to work. Even the hugely popular Airfoil app for Windows and Mac that allows users to stream any audio source has stopped working following the update.

While it sounds like tvOS 10.2 is the final nail in the coffin for third-party streaming apps, the hugely popular developers of doubleTwist have found a way to implement the verification process into their Android app.

As far as we know, it’s the only app that currently offers compatibility with tvOS 10.2, although the fact that a workaround is possible leads us to believe that other popular streaming apps like AllCast and Airfoil will offer something similar in future.

What if I’ve got an Apple TV running tvOS 10.1 or earlier?

The good news is that if you’re yet to install the tvOS 10.2 update, the plethora of third-party streaming apps available on Google Play should still function properly. That means that those interested in streaming from an Android to Apple TV can consider popular apps like AllCast , a hugely popular app that offers the ability to stream both audio and video to not only the Apple TV, but a range of media streamers and even the Xbox One.

AllCast is a free app, but if you want to use it for more than five minutes at a time you’ll have to pay £3 for AllCast Premium . While it may sound expensive, it’s cheaper than some of the alternatives on Google Play.

Although with that being said, not all third-party streaming apps are paid – you can also find free apps that offer similar functionality on Google Play. These include the likes of All Screen , an app that offers streaming support for audio and video to Chromecast, Fire TV, Apple TV and others, although the free nature of the app may reflect on the overall performance and build quality.

Stream audio to Apple TV running tvOS 10.2 using doubleTwist Pro

As mentioned above, doubleTwist Pro is one of the only options currently available for Android users that want to stream audio to a fourth-generation Apple TV running tvOS 10.2 or later. There’s a catch too: while there is a free version of the app, those that want to stream to Apple TV must pay out for the ‘Pro’ version of the app. It’s not the cheapest app either at £7.99.

But what do you get for the price? Apart from the ability to stream from Android to Apple TV, it also offers high quality FLAC file playback, a 10-band EQ and even offers AirSync, allowing you to sync your iTunes library to your Android smartphone. There are other features too, simply head over to Google Play to find out more information about the app.

How to use Dark Mode on Apple TV

January 22, 2018 by www.macworld.co.uk Leave a Comment

Using a screen late at night can be bad for your eyes, and bad for your sleep patterns; it has become increasingly popular for software companies, therefore, to introduce alternative (usually darker and warmer) nighttime colour schemes for their interfaces in order to make things more comfortable for users.

Apple has a well-known Dark Mode that aims to help with these problems, but the interesting thing is that officially, it is only available on the Apple TV. The iPhone has Invert Colour and Night Shift; the Mac has ‘dark menu bar’ mode ; but only the Apple TV has the full feature. In this article we briefly explain how it works, and how to switch it on.

What is Dark Mode?

Dark Mode for tvOS replaces the white Apple TV interface, with a darker option. It is only available for fourth-generation Apple TVs (with the TV app store) and later.

Dark Mode arrived on the Apple TV as part of tvOS 10 . The difference is much more noticeable on tvOS than onmacOS, which as previously mentioned only has a narrower version of the feature we call ‘dark menu bar’ mode.

How to use Dark Mode on Apple TV

Here’s how to switch on Dark Mode in tvOS.

  1. Click Settings.
  2. Choose Appearance.
  3. Select Dark.

You’ll notice that the interface changes at once; the background changes from mid grey to black, and the text from black to white.
