Attorney General Ken Paxton says he will defend Texas sodomy law if Supreme Court revisits Lawrence vs. Texas

June 28, 2022 by www.chron.com Leave a Comment

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton last week seemingly expressed support for the Supreme Court potentially overturning past rulings on cases involving the LGBTQ community following the downfall of Roe v. Wade on Friday.

In a separate concurring opinion Friday, Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas questioned a number of the high court’s past rulings , including Obergefell v. Hodges, which established the right of same-sex couples to marry, and Lawrence vs. Texas—a 2003 decision in which the court ruled against the state of Texas regarding a 1973 law criminalizing the act of sodomy.

Thomas also mentioned Griswold v. Connecticut, which established the right of married couples to use contraception without government interference. “In future cases, we should reconsider all of this Court’s substantive due process precedents, including Griswold, Lawrence, and Obergefell. Because any substantive due process decision is ‘demonstrably erroneous,'” Thomas wrote. “We have a duty to ‘correct the error’ regarding these established in those precedents.”

During a Friday appearance on News Nation’s “On Balance with Leland Vittert,” Paxton said he would support the Supreme Court revisiting the cases mentioned by Thomas and defend Texas’ long-unenforced law against sodomy.

“I’m sure you read Justice Thomas’s concurrence where he said there were a number of other of these issues, Griswold, Lawrence and Obergefell he felt needs to be looked at again,” Vittert told Paxton. “Obviously the Lawrence case came from Texas… would you as attorney general be comfortable defending a law that once again outlawed sodomy? That questioned Lawrence again or Griswold or gay marriage? That came from the state legislature to put to the test what Justice Thomas said?”

“Yeah, I mean there’s all kinds of issues here, but certainly the Supreme Court has stepped into issues that I don’t think there’s any constitutional provision dealing with,” Paxton responded. “They were legislative issues and this is one of those issues and there may be more. So it would depend on the issue and dependent on what state law had said at the time.”

Vittert pressed on, asking, “For the sake of time here, you wouldn’t rule out that if the state legislature passed the same law that Lawrence overturned on sodomy, you wouldn’t have any problem then defending that and taking that case back to the Supreme Court?”

Paxton responded: “Yeah, look my job is to defend state law and I’ll continue to do that. That is my job under the Constitution and I’m certainly willing and able to do that.”

Asked if he would support the Texas Legislature testing the law, Paxton demurred. “I’d have to take a look at it,” the attorney general said. “This is all new territory for us so I’d have to how the Legislature was laid out and whether we thought we could defend it. Ultimately, if it’s constitutional, we’re going to go defend it.”

Paxton’s statements drew a swift rebuke from his Democratic opponent Rochelle Garza, who took to Twitter to call out the attorney general for his remarks during the interview. “Roe was just the first — they won’t stop till they roll back all of our civil rights,” Garza wrote. “We MUST kick Ken Paxton out of office this Nov. When I’m Attorney General, Texans will have a Civil Rights Division to protect ALL of our rights. Y’all means all. Period.”

Conservative leaders from other states have since expressed support for Justice Thomas’s opinion, including Utah Senate President Stuart Adams, who said he would support the Supreme Court reconsidering same-sex marriage. Utah’s constitutional ban on same-sex unions still exists and could be reinstated if the high court were to overturn its earlier decision.

Paxton’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment by the time of this writing.

‘These deaths are on Biden’: Gov. Abbott, Texas leaders react to 50 migrants found dead

June 28, 2022 by www.chron.com Leave a Comment

As many as 50 people are dead after an abandoned tractor-trailer was found in southwest San Antonio Monday evening, and more than a dozen were rushed to nearby hospitals. They are all believed to be undocumented migrants.

“This is nothing short of a horrific tragedy,” San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg told reporters. “Our job is not to ask why. Our job is to ask how we can help. That’s why you’re seeing medical assistance. As far as the federal investigation goes, that’s in the hands of the feds. I’m sure there will be more questions and hopefully some answers as we move forward.”

On Twitter, Nirenberg posted: “Migrants seeking asylum should always be treated as a humanitarian crisis, but this evening we’re facing a horrific human tragedy.” He also urged Texans to “think compassionately, pray for the deceased, the ailing, and their families at this moment.”

The San Antonio Police Department shared details of the “horrific tragedy” during a news conference near the scene on Monday. Chief William P. McManus said police received a call at approximately 5:50 p.m. Monday from an employee working nearby the scene who said they heard a cry for help. The employee went to investigate and found “a number of deceased people inside” a partially open tractor-trailer, McManus said.

Gov. Greg Abbott took to Twitter shortly after the news surfaced to point a finger at the Biden administration’s border policies.

“These deaths are on Biden,” Abbott wrote. “They are a result of his deadly open border policies. They show the deadly consequences of his refusal to enforce the law.”

Abbott’s Democratic gubernatorial opponent Beto O’Rourke stopped short of placing blame but called the incident “devastating” and offered his thoughts to the families of those lost. “We need urgent action — dismantle human smuggling rings and replace them with expanded avenues for legal migration that reflect our values and meet our country’s needs,” O’Rourke tweeted.

This is devastating. Our thoughts go out to the families of those who lost their lives in San Antonio today. https://t.co/FVDBGFm9Oh

State Sen. Roland Gutierrez directed his ire toward the governor, tweeting , “Another example of  @GregAbbott_TX failed policies. He’s now overseen the deadliest school shooting in Texas history & the largest Migrant death in Texas history, but tells us he’s got it all under control. Another avoidable tragedy. More avoidable deaths. Tragic and frustrating.”

Sen. Ted Cruz seized the moment to blame Democrats, tweeting: “Horrific. This..is..WRONG. How many more people have to die before Dems give a damn?”

48 Migrants Found Dead in Abandoned Trailer in Texas Smuggling Incident

June 28, 2022 by www.breitbart.com Leave a Comment

Police near San Antonio report that 48 migrants are dead and at least 16 others were transported to local hospitals after being locked inside a tractor-trailer. Two more died after receiving medical care. A worker found the tractor-trailer on the southwest side of San Antonio on a back road near Interstate 35. Police say the driver may have been involved in a human smuggling incident.

A senior law enforcement source on the scene told Breitbart Texas that 46 migrants were declared dead on the scene or at area hospitals and at least 16 others were taken to area hospitals. The dead-on-scene figure was later revised to 48. A source on the scene says they have a person of interest in custody. That person was also reportedly transported to an area hospital. At least 60 migrants were packed inside the trailer.

Among the dead were teenage migrants, KSAT reported . It is not known if they were accompanied or not. Four minors survived and were taken to area hospitals, officials reported in a Monday night press conference.

Due to the circumstances, ICE Homeland Security Investigations special agents were called in and are taking charge of the investigation. Border Patrol agents are also reported to be on the scene.

Chief McManus said a worker heard cries for help coming from inside the trailer. The worker opened the partially opened door and observed dead migrants inside.

Breitbart Texas reports extensively on the practice of human smugglers moving migrants in tractor-trailers.

Earlier this month, local police agents found two migrants dead in a tractor-trailer loaded with 111 migrants, Breitbart Texas reported . La Salle County Sheriff’s deputies responded to frantic 911 calls from migrants being smuggled in a semi-tractor trailer near Encinal, Texas, on Friday. Dispatchers could hear screams from migrants trapped inside the closed trailer traveling north and away from the border on Interstate 35. When the vehicle was encountered, two migrants were dead and 111 were apprehended after an exhaustive search.

Breitbart Texas reached out to HSI officials for additional information. A response was not available at press time. Officials did say they would be sending a statement shortly. This article will be updated at that time.

Nearly five years ago, San Antonio police found another tractor-trailer where eight migrants were dead and 20 others were listed in critical or serious condition.

Texas Instruments India launches mentorship programme to bring more women into semiconductor sector
CHENNAI:
Texas Instruments (TI), a global leader in semiconductors, has launched WiSH – Women in Semiconductors and Hardware – a mentorship programme for female engineering students from across India.

The month-long programme, which happened in June, aimed to give the students an exposure to semiconductors and encourage them to pursue a career in this industry. More than 40 students from across 18 colleges including IIT-Madras , IIT – Kharagpur, BITS, NIT -Surathkal and Delhi Technological University participated in the programme.

The programme was conducted as a mix of virtual and in-person mentoring, and involved hands-on experience designing a chip through simulation experiments, lab visits and technical talks.

The final week was spent at the TI campus in Bengaluru where participants interacted with other engineers to understand more about how chips are made, the different functions that contribute to making a product, and the opportunities available to them once they step into TI.

“Today, 40% of STEM graduates in India are women, but less than half opt for careers in semiconductors and hardware. This is because of several reasons including lack of information on careers in hardware, misplaced belief that hardware is tougher, lack of mentorship opportunities and very few visible engineering role models,” Shubhra Bhandari, director of human resources at TI, said.

Madhumitha A V, a WiSH programme participant from NIT-Trichy said that she applied to the programme out of curiosity and WiSH was an eye-opener. “I now know a lot more about the world of semiconductors, the kind of technology challenges we get to work on and the fact that many women engineers have built very successful careers in this industry. While I am still weighing my options, a career in hardware is definitely a possibility,” she said.

Global semiconductor company Texas Instruments designs, manufactures, tests, and sells Analog and embedded processing chips for markets such as industrial, automotive, personal electronics, communications equipment, and enterprise systems.

Greg Abbott, Beto O’Rourke react very differently to Texas migrant deaths

June 28, 2022 by www.newsweek.com Leave a Comment

Texas Governor Greg Abbott and Beto O’Rourke , the former congressman hoping to unseat Abbott in November, had sharply differing responses after 46 people were found dead in an abandoned tractor-trailer in San Antonio on Monday.

At least 16 others, including four children, were transported to local hospitals suffering from heat exhaustion, officials said at the scene of thee latest tragedy involving migrants smuggled across the border from Mexico.

Abbott, a Republican, was quick to place blame for the deaths on President Joe Biden .

“These deaths are on Biden,”Abbott tweeted on Monday night. “They are a result of his deadly open border policies. They show the deadly consequences of his refusal to enforce the law.”

O’Rourke, meanwhile, avoided pointing the finger in his response.

“This is devastating. Our thoughts go out to the families of those who lost their lives in San Antonio today,” he said in a tweet.

“We need urgent action — dismantle human smuggling rings and replace them with expanded avenues for legal migration that reflect our values and meet our country’s needs.”

O’Rourke notably clashed with Abbott last month after 19 children and two teachers were killed by a gunman in an elementary school in Uvalde, also in southern Texas. O’Rourke accused his rival of “doing nothing” to curb gun violence in the state.

San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg called the San Antonio discovery a “horrific human tragedy.”

“More than 40 hopeful lives were lost,” he said on Twitter Monday. “I urge you to think compassionately, pray for the deceased, the ailing, and their families at this moment.”

U.S. Homeland Security Investigations is investigating the incident, San Antonio Police Chief William McManus has said.

Three people were taken into custody, but it was not clear if they were definitively connected with human trafficking, McManus said.

Aaron Reichlin-Melnick, policy director at the American Immigration Council, also connected the incident to the Biden administration’s policies and said had been “dreading another tragedy like this for months now.”

“With the border shut as tightly as it is today for migrants from Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador, people have been pushed into more and more dangerous routes,” he wrote on Twitter. “Truck smuggling is way up.”

Other advocates blamed the immigration policies of former president Donald Trump and Abbott.

“This tragedy is only the latest case of unscrupulous coyotes putting profit over the lives of real human beings,” said Lydia Guzman, the national immigration committee chair at the League of United Latin American Citizens.

“Sadly, this is a result of our broken immigration system. The lack of real immigration reform puts migrants in danger of falling victims to unscrupulous smugglers.”

Migrants attempting to cross the U.S.-Mexico border have been expelled more than 2 million times under Title 42, a controversial Trump-era policy that has limited asylum for more than two years.

The policy, which was put in place in March 2020 to limit the spread of COVID-19, encourages repeat attempts because there are no legal consequences for getting caught. A federal judge recently ordered the policy remain in effect after the Biden administration attempted to rescind it.

Abbott, O’Rourke and the White House have been contacted for comment.
