Bratislava plans to renovate 25 public spaces in the city for €14.3 million under the Živé Miesta (Living Places) scheme this year.

“We have been working on these changes for several months,” said Bratislava Mayor Matúš Vallo when introducing the scheme in late March, adding that the city wants to implement the first 25 projects by the end of this year.

Some projects are at the design stage while others are going through the process of public procurement or getting permits, specified the mayor. Among the first is a skatepark under the SNP Bridge, which is to be implemented in the near future.

The second part of the Living Places scheme is the standardisation of public spaces.

“We have been working on the Manifesto of Public Spaces for a year now,” said Vallo, adding that it includes novelties as well as principles for handling greenery. The manual should be introduced later this year.

The third part of the project is grant support for public spaces from the Bratislava City Foundation. It will support organisations but also citizens joining in improving public spaces with a total of €100,000.

Living Square project

The revitalisation of three central squares of Bratislava, SNP, Velvet Revolution and Kamenné Námestie will take place under the umbrella of the scheme, too.

Under the Živé Námestie (Living Square) project, SNP Square, Nežnej Revolúcie (Velvet Revolution) Square and Kamenné Square will merge into a unified public space without cars and with greenery meeting climatic requirements, the Bratislava authorities announced as they introduced the winning design by a German team of architects on April 7.

“The proposed design offers a better space for people to meet, addresses the complicated traffic situation, which has always existed here, to the detriment of pedestrians, and deals with new climate demands,” said Vallo.

The three interconnected squares totalling almost 35,000 square metres make up the largest public space in the centre of the capital. No reconstruction has taken place since the 1970s, with the exception of Klobučnícka Street and the surroundings of the Old Market Hall.

Following the planned reconstruction with an estimated price tag of €20 million, the three squares will create a loop following the course of the former moat that surrounded the historical city centre, extending the pedestrian area in the city centre.

Still too little

Public space revitalization projects are implemented by the municipality in cooperation with the Bratislava Metropolitan Institute (MIB).

“€14.3 million is a record sum compared to the past, when no investment was made in the renewal of public spaces, but at the same time it is a small amount compared to the investment that Bratislava deserves for its public spaces,” said the mayor.

The first phase of the renovation of public spaces to be implemented this year, includes, for example, Krížna – Karadžičova public park, Žilinská park, Legionárska park, the multifunctional park in Karlova Ves, Dunajská park, Husova park, the former ammunition depots known as the Malý Slavín complex, the buffet on Partizánská Lúka meadow, the park on Radlinského Street, Komenského Square, Námestie Slobody Square and the public space under the SNP Bridge.

The projects under preparation are the Krasňany depot, the public space around the house of services in Dúbravka, the public space on Odborárske Square, the public space on Kazanská Street in Vrakuňa, revitalisation of the park on Mudrochová, the Staromestská rest area and the city walls, the new park by Rohlík lake, the Zochova zone and Dullovo Square.

Facebook Poke Falls Out of Top 25 Apps as Snapchat Hits Top 5

December 26, 2012 by mashable.com Leave a Comment

So much for Facebook Poke killing off Snapchat.

Facebook ‘s new iPhone app, which copies Snapchat’s self-destruct feature for messages, disappeared from the top of Apple’s most downloaded apps list almost as quickly as messages disappear from the app.

Poke was released on Friday and rose to the top of Apple’s App Store that same day, displacing Google Maps as the most popular free app in the U.S. The app has since dropped out of the top 10. In fact, it’s not even in the top 25.

As of publication, Facebook Poke has dropped to 34th on the list of the most popular free apps.

One theory put out by Josh Constine at TechCrunch is that Poke’s decline may be due to the fact that many people received new iPhones for the holidays and likely downloaded more essential apps for the device, pushing Poke lower on the list. This point isn’t without merit, as some older apps like YouTube and Instagram experienced a significant uptick on Christmas Day, according to ranking data from App Annie .

However, even if this is part of the reason for the decline of Facebook poke, it’s worth noting that Snapchat — the app that Facebook Poke was supposed to kill off — has actually gone up in the rankings during the same time period. Snapchat initially dropped from 6th on the list to 8th on Friday after Poke came out, according to App Annie, but it has since recovered and is now the 4th most popular free app in the App Store. Poke may have struggled during the holidays, but Snapchat certainly didn’t. Perhaps users tried out Poke and then decided to download Snapchat afterwards.

What’s more, Poke actually started to slip in the charts by the end of the weekend, several days before Christmas, suggesting that the app received a rush of downloads in the first 48 hours, but then quickly fizzled out. It’s not too surprising that downloads for the app would be front-loaded given the promotional power of Facebook, but the speed at which the app faded suggests Poke may be more of a fad than Facebook probably hoped.

In some ways, this shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise. The app has been criticized in several early reviews, including one by Mashable ‘s own Pete Pachal , who described it as being “frustrating as hell” to use.

..Says health of detained man deteriorating

By Nimat Otori

The family of Chief Executive Officer, U.I Properties Limited,  Ifeanyi Israel , has raised the alarm over his deteriorating health at the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC  where he has been detained for a month , over what was described as a civil matter.

His arrest by   officers from the Land and  Property Fraud section  of the Commission, followed a complaint by one  Chief Ezeani  Okoye, that  Israel  did not remit the  money he received from his tenants to him.

In a petition to the EFCC  Chairman, Abdulrasheed Bawa , the detainee’s  family stated that no order of court was sought  or obtained for his  continued detention , after keeping him beyond 24 and 48 hours respectively since  March 25, 2021.

His family also hinted that the case was in court  wondering why the ailing father of one was still being detained.

The petition which was issued  by Canan Chambers and signed by Emeka Izima, explained that , ”  Our client was once arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on  March 19, 2019 following a civil disagreement he had with one of his clients, Chief Ezeani Okoye who alleged that our client did not remit money he received from his tenants to him.

“ On March  21, 2021, our client was granted administrative bail but was eventually released on  March 22, 2019. Our client kept to the conditions of his bail until his application for the enforcement of his Fundamental Human Right was fully seized by the High Court of FCT in Suit No: FCT/HC/CV/1604/2019:  IFEANYI ISRAEL VS THE NIGERIA POLICE FORCE & four others  which is now pending at the Court of Appeal in Appeal No. CA A/104/2020 coming up for hearing on  May 25,2021.

“On Thursday,  March 25 , 2021 our client visited the Commission’s office at  5 Formella Crescent, Wuse II, Abuja on the invitation of one Mr. Bakare  who disclosed that he was one of the new officers assigned to handle the case and that as a new personnel in the matter, he needed to familiarize himself with the parties to the case.

“ Upon introduction of our client as the suspect in the case, the said new officer immediately through  our client into detention despite the fact that he was already on an administrative bail earlier granted him by the previous team handling the case and had honoured the invitation of the Commission without any hesitation or coercion.

“Our Client is being detained at the instance and pleasure of the complainant who had vowed to use the Commission to keep our client perpetually out of circulation after his failed attempt  with the Navy and DIA sometime in 2018.   For fear of our client defeating him in the prosecution of this case, he has made sure that our client would not be granted bail again by these ‘new officers’ led by one Mr. Gudu Modibo.

“ We presented a Level 16 Public officer ready and willing to take our client on bail since  March 26, 2021 but the seemingly and obviously compromised new officers have refused to grant our client bail despite repeated pleas to them.

“ Our client is diabetic and his health is visibly fast deteriorating to the knowledge of the said detaining new officers. It is pertinent to notify you sir, that  no order of court was sought or obtained for the continued detention of our client after keeping him beyond 24 and 48hours respectively since 25th of March, 2021 till today.

“ We wish to emphasize that our client was not traced, tracked or arrested by the Gudu Modibo-led team of the Commission but he  personally came on his own to honour the invitation extended to him by the team through telephone call. If he had intended to jump bail, he would not have personally submitted himself to the team. He has done nothing wrong to deserve this mindless and capricious punishment being melted out to him by this ‘new team’.

“Sir, may we humbly reiterate the fact that you owe the good people of this country  a duty of respect to the Rule of Law and we strongly believe that you will not hesitate to do so. No society can thrive and grow without due adherence to the Rule of Law and decent use of power”.

He therefore,  urged the Commission’s Chairman  to admit  the detained man  to administrative bail pending the hearing and determination of the one-count charge already filed and served in charge No. CR/1064/2020-FRN vs Ifeanyi Israel .

Efforts to get EFCC’s reaction failed as a call put to its head,  Media and Publicity, Mr Wilson Uwujaren, as well as message to his email and mobile phone did not receive any response at press time.
