Weekend curfew: Roads empty, markets shut in Delhi

April 17, 2021 by www.rediff.com Leave a Comment

Roads, markets, buses and metro trains were largely empty on Saturday as the national capital, grappling with soaring COVID-19 cases, observed weekend curfew, with Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal appealing to people to adhere to the restrictions.

The weekend curfew, aimed at breaking the chain of spiralling coronavirus infections, was clamped at 10 pm on Friday and will continue till 5 am on Monday.

Apart from those who have been exempted, a majority of Delhiites appeared to have stayed home during the weekend curfew.

Only a few passengers were seen travelling on buses and metro trains in the city.

Major markets, including Sadar Bazar, Chandni Chowk, Connaught Place, Khari Baoli and Karol Bagh, and industrial areas like Bawana, Narela, Okhla, wore a deserted look during the day.

Brijesh Goel, chairman of the Chamber of Trade and Industry, said the traders followed the Delhi government’s direction on the new restrictions completely.

“All the wholesale and retail markets and factories in the city were closed. The weekend curfew was 100 per cent successful. We had talked to our traders and sought their support to the move.

“Traders will also follow any other measure the government takes to check the spread of COVID-19,” Goel said.

However, there was exception near facilities like the LNJP Hospital, GTB Hospital, AIIMS and ISBTs — Kashmiri Gate, Anand Vihar and Sarai Kale Khan, where people were seen taking the public transport.

Those going to inter-sate bus terminals, airports and railway stations, have been exempted from the weekend curfew if they show valid tickets.

On Saturday, shops providing essential services, including pharmacies, grocery stores, food outlets and banks, remained open.

Food delivery service agents were also seen on the roads as the Delhi Disaster Management Authority has given permission to restaurants for home delivery services.

A senior transport department officer said buses ran almost empty as only those associated with essential services and having valid e-pass were allowed to board.

“Metro services are running smoothly and all those who are authorised to travel as per the exemptions from the DDMA, are being allowed,” a DMRC spokesperson said.

“The headway of 15 minutes being maintained in the main lines,” he said.

Shahdul, 35, an auto-rickshaw driver looking for passengers at Green Park, said there are not many passengers on the roads from Saturday morning. “Due to the curfew, there are not many passengers today. I have got two bookings since the morning,” he said.

Chandu Chaurasia, vice president of Capital Drivers Welfare Association, alleged that police stopped last mile connectivity vehicles like ‘gramin sewa’ and ‘phatphat sewa’ vehicles at many areas although there was no order to not allow such vehicles during the weekend curfew.

The Delhi Police set up checkpoints at various points to ensure movement of only those who have been exempted by the Delhi Disaster Management Authority.

Chinmoy Biswal, Delhi Police PRO, said all the district deputy commissioners of police were on the ground to ensure the implementation of weekend curfew.

“The movement of essential goods and services is being facilitated. We have placed banners on pickets and outside the gates of the colonies to tell people about the curfew and asked them not to come outside their houses unnecessarily.

“We are also monitoring the COVID helpline and assisting people who are facing difficulty in getting movement pass,” Biswal said.

On Friday, police had warned people venturing out of homes without valid reasons during the weekend curfew would face arrest and prosecution for violating anti-COVID regulations.

Delhi recorded its highest-ever one-day COVID-19 figures on Friday when 19,486 cases and 141 deaths were reported, prompting Chief Minister Kejriwal to order setting up more coronavirus facilities and increase the strength of oxygen beds.

Sickening photos show how chemicals used to cut cocaine rot your skin and genitals

April 16, 2021 by www.mirror.co.uk Leave a Comment

Shocking images have emerged showing how regular cocaine use can rot the skin and genitals.

Sales of the Class A drug are expected to soar as lockdown restrictions are lifted and pubs re-open – but those who give in to temptation may want to think again.

Around two thirds of the ‘party drug’ coming into the UK is laced with chemical levamisole, used to treat parasitic worm infections in cows and horses.

Until 2000, levamisole was used to treat arthritis and bowel cancer before human consumption was banned due to severe side effects, including skin rotting.

The medication is cheap in South America, with drug gangs increasingly using it to cut the product before shipment, when years ago it was sent in purer form.

And because it acts as a stimulant, it’s difficult for the average user to detect.

Colombian doctors published details in BMJ Case Reports of 11 patients in their 30s who had taken the Class A drug mixed with levamisole, causing body parts to rot, as well as joint and lung problems.

Have you been affected by this story? Let us know at [email protected]

Three of them found the skin on their genitals had turned black due to lack of blood supply.

Other cases include a woman in the Netherlands, aged 42, who had ulcerating sores on her legs and face after taking cut cocaine.

While another user, a woman, 68, from Texas, USA, saw a blood-filled blister appear on her nose, while her arms and face became covered in fleshy sores before being diagnosed with inflammatory disease vasculitis.

Dr Sarah Jarvis, GP and clinical director of Patient Access, told The Sun : “Unscrupulous drug dealers often ‘cut’ their drug with other, cheaper products to increase their profits even further. And they don’t care how dangerous those other products are.

“It can cause complete collapse of your immune system and even cause your skin to rot.

“There is no cure for either of these side effects – people just have to be admitted to hospital and given therapy to try and prevent life-threatening complications.”

It comes following reports drug dealers are urging people to book time slots as they take advantage of the surge in demand after months of isolating.

Some even claim they won’t bother entertaining orders of lower than two grams – or around £80-worth, reports the Metro .

A dealer told the news outlet that sales had not completely fallen off during the pandemic but many were now looking to “get on it” with Boris Johnson’s road map to recovery taking a major step on Monday.

Cocaine is the most commonly used illicit stimulant drug in the EU, according to the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction (EMCDDA).

While statistics in recent months also suggest that Londoners take more coke than people in the likes of Barcelona and Amsterdam.

COVID Lockdown: Delhi Wears Deserted Look as Weekend Curfew Kicks in – Video

April 17, 2021 by sputniknews.com Leave a Comment

As a two-day curfew was imposed on India’s capital city to contain the spread of the contagious COVID-19 virus, Delhi wore a deserted look on Saturday.

According to the Delhi government, the weekend curfew, from 10 p.m. on Friday until 5 a.m. (local time) on Monday, is aimed at breaking the chain of spiralling coronavirus infections .

Delhi State Chief Arvind Kejriwal on Saturday appealed to people to adhere to the restrictions.

“There is a curfew in Delhi today and tomorrow due to corona. Please follow it. Together we have to defeat corona”, Kejriwal tweeted in Hindi.

करोना के चलते आज और कल दिल्ली में कर्फ़्यू है। कृपया इसका पालन करें। हम सबको मिलके करोना को हराना है।

— Arvind Kejriwal (@ArvindKejriwal) April 17, 2021

Citizens Happy with the Lockdown

Speaking to Sputnik, Meghna Pandey, an advocate and a resident of Delhi praised the Kejriwal government for implementing the weekend curfew.

“The situation is really getting out of hand. We are witnessing a massive surge and this was needed to control or to break the chain”, she said.

Another resident, Aamir Hussain said people were violating COVID norms on daily basis at markets as if there was no pandemic.

“We could easily spot people without masks and social distancing on roads . My only request is that the government should work towards providing health facilities to the ones suffering from the virus”, he said, adding that the migrant workers who will be at loss should also be taken care of.

Strict Vigilance by Police

The Delhi Police have placed barricades at several points in the national capital and are carrying out patrolling at regular intervals to keep a check on violators.

”People venturing out of homes without valid reasons during the weekend curfew will face arrest and prosecution for violating anti-COVID regulations”, Delhi Police Commissioner SN Shrivastava warned on Friday during a review meeting.

Meanwhile, the Delhi government and the police have issued e-passes to exempted categories of people who will be allowed to go out during the curfew for essential services and activities.

Public transport and metro trains are running at reduced capacity and frequency for those involved in essential services and activities.

On Friday, Delhi recorded 19,486 new COVID cases, its highest-ever one-day surge, and 141 deaths, prompting Chief Minister Kejriwal to order more coronavirus facilities be set up and increase the strength of oxygen beds.

The Kejriwal government said that they will hold a review meeting after the weekend lockdown and decide a future course of action including its extension or some other measures.

Awka, Onitsha residents lament hike in rents

rent

Residents of Awka, Anambra capital, and Onitsha, the commercial hub, have expressed worries over the astronomical hike in rents.

The respondents made their feelings known in separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday in Awka.

They complained that rents for residential houses, offices and shops were becoming so high that they now adversely affect the living standards of residents.

Miss Uchenna Okafor, a computer operator in the Aroma area of Awka, said she was initially paying N80,000 for a single room self-contained, but lamented that her landlord later raised the rent to N120,000 per annum.

Another resident, Titus Maduako, said he used to pay N300,000 yearly for a three-bedroom apartment he lived, but said that his landlord recently served the occupants a notice increasing the rent to N400,000.

Mr Alloy Attah, who resides in Onitsha, also said that rents for shops and offices in the commercial city had gone out of the reach of the low and middle classes.

“About two years ago, you can hire a shop for between N5,000 and N10,000, but now the rent has doubled, the same applies to offices and residential apartments”, he said.

He noted that the situation was adversely affecting the residents who had other family needs to cater for.

Mr Ignatius Nwanando, an estate agent in Awka, blamed some landlords for the rent hike.

`Some landlords will tell you to increase the rent to the same level with recently built houses regardless of the fact that the new ones have modern facilities compared to the old buildings.

“They will equally say that you should add caution fee, agreement fee and the main rent and we too must get our percentage as agents too”, he said.

Nwanando said that it was up to the state governments to legislate on real estate matters with a view to reducing the challenges faced by urban dwellers.

Mr Paulinus Uche, a landlord in Awka, said the hike on rent was due to arbitrary increase in the prices of building materials and the excessive charges by government regulatory agencies.

“Those blaming landlords for rent increase should visit the market and price building materials.

“Apart from that, enquire on what it takes to buy a plot of land in any state capital in the South-East, start excavation and see the army of government and community agents that would be visiting your site”, he said.

Uche said that government must be sincere in handling the factors that resulted led to the hike in rents.

“For instance, we heard that a bag of cement produced in another African country sells lower than the price we currently pay in Nigeria, even when it is our son that owned both factories.

“Our leaders should look into such matters to make live better for the people”, he said. (NAN)
