San Francisco Guarantees Local Artists $1,000 Per Month Income

March 26, 2021 by deadline.com Leave a Comment

San Francisco is investing in its arts community. Starting in May, 130 local artists in the city will receive $1,000 per month in cash, with no strings attached.

The pilot program in universal basic income is scheduled to last for six months, according to The San Francisco Chronicle . The artists will be selected from those “whose artistic practice is rooted in a historically marginalized community.”

San Francisco Mayor London Breed announced the program on Thursday.

“This new program is an innovative effort to help our creative sector get through this challenging time, and come back even stronger and more resilient than before,” Breed said on the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts website. “The arts are critical to our local economy and are an essential part of our long-term recovery.”

The program is open to artists working in music, dance, creative writing, visual art, performance art, installation, photography, theater, and film. Art teachers and craft workers are also eligible as long as they meet an income qualification.

The YBCA claims San Francisco’s artistic community generated $1.45 billion before the pandemic and employed almost 40,000 local residents.

“There are people living in challenging circumstances right now,” Deborah Cullinan told the Chronicle . “We want to move as quickly as we can to get them the resources they need.”

Buena Community Rallies To Save Suspended Landisville Volunteer Fire Company From Permanent Shutdown

April 12, 2021 by philadelphia.cbslocal.com Leave a Comment

BUENA, N.J. (CBS) — The suspended Landisville Volunteer Fire Company in South Jersey is now at risk of being permanently shut down. It’s been a fixture in Buena Borough, Atlantic County for nearly a century.

Now, residents are rallying to prevent what they call a safety issue for their community.

“It’s just totally wrong for the community. It will create an unsafe environment,” Buena resident Robert Anderson said.

These shiny fire trucks are ready to go to answer calls for help. But for the last four months, they’ve been collecting dust after the Landisville Volunteer Fire Company was suspended for 90 days back in December.

“The bottom line is that the violations remain outstanding and uncorrected. And while some on the call believe the district will be dissolved at tonight’s meeting, this is 100% not true,” Mayor David Zappariello said.

According to the mayor, the fire company was facing 28 violations that caused its suspension in December, including respiration training and blood pathogen training.

A special meeting was held in March that extended that suspension an additional 90 days. Residents rallied outside of the municipal building Monday afternoon.

“They are very financially fit and there’s no safety violations. Whatever was supposedly found is taken care of, so they can’t pull this on us,” Betty Tester said.

During a conference call Monday night, the mayor addressed some concerns surrounding the possibility of the fire company being dissolved.

“I, as well as council, want to schedule an in-person meeting to discuss the Pioche violations and other issues uncovered since July of 2020,” Zappariello said.

The current fire chief says almost all of the violations have been addressed, like moving manuals from an office to a shelf in the garage.

“Landisville did have some paperwork problems from the previous administration. The new administration took care of all the problems,” Chief Ken Barbagli said.

Residents and volunteer fire officials are hoping they don’t shut this vital emergency service down permanently.

BUENA PARK (CBSLA) — The Orange County Fire Authority honored three young people – including an 11-year-old boy — for their recent acts of heroism.

Letters of commendation were presented to 11-year-old Travis Navarro of Buena Park, and sisters 17-year-old Stephanie Roa and 15-year-old Ashley Roa at Fire Station #61 in Buena Park Thursday.

OCFA Chief Brian Fennessy said he was impressed with Travis’ calm demeanor when he called 911 on Jan. 26 to help his mother, who had a seizure.

“Amazing composure,” Fennessy said. “I think you can hear through the recording just how calm he was. I gotta tell you, Travis, at 11 years old, I don’t know I would have been that calm if that had been my mother. We’re just so proud of you.”

Fennessy also presented the Roa sisters with Certificates of Heroism, OCFA’s highest honor available to a civilian. Both girls were driving with their father on the 710 Freeway in Long Beach on Sept. 19, 2020 when they witnessed a rollover accident that ejected two passengers. The girls told their father to stop and call 911, and put the training they learned a year earlier at the OCFA Girls Empowerment Camp to work.

Los Angeles Clippers forward Paul George was fined $35,000 for public criticism of officiating by the NBA on Friday.

George made his comments to reporters on Wednesday after the Clippers lost 105-89 at Dallas.

George was upset that the Clippers went to the free throw line only 11 times against the Mavericks, with 46 drives to the hoop leading to only six free throws.

“We’re putting a lot of pressure at the rim,” George told reporters. “It’s insane we’re not getting these calls. But it is what it is. It’s nothing new to me.”

George wanted the team to submit video of the contest to the NBA, saying, “League has got to take a look at this.”

After talks with officials on Wednesday, George described what he was told as “a bunch of lies” and added, “They know what’s going on.”

George is averaging 23.1 points, 6.1 rebounds, 5.3 assists and 1,1 steals a game this season for the Clippers, who are 26-16 and rank fourth in the Western Conference, four games behind league-best Utah.
