Edward ‘cried out like a lamb’ for Wallis who never came to see him on his deathbed

May 29, 2023 by www.express.co.uk Leave a Comment

Wallis Simpson was ‘exiled’ when HRH was refused says expert

King Edward VIII , who died from throat cancer 51 years ago, spent the final weeks of his life bleating “like a lamb” for his wife of 35 years Wallis Simpson , his night nurse claimed.

In the three or so weeks leading up to his death spent at the couple’s home, known as “Villa Windsor” in France, Edward was under the care of Julie Chatard Alexander.

The then 26-year-old Ms Alexander, who found the Duke of Windsor “very sweet”, was “shocked” that Wallis failed to check in on her dying husband.

This was despite the fact that Wallis was at home, in her bedroom on the same floor as Edward’s, she said.

In fact, Wallis “never” came in to see Edward and Ms Alexander said the Monarch, whose reign lasted just under a year , ended up dying in her arms.

In Andrew Morton’s 2018 book Wallis in Love, Ms Alexander said: “[Wallis] never came to see him or kiss him good night or see how he was. Not once. Poor fellow.

“He would call her name over and over ‘Wallis, Wallis, Wallis, Wallis’ or ‘darling, darling, darling, darling’. It was pitiful and pathetic. Just so sad, like a lamb calling for its mother.”

According to Mr Morton’s biography, Wallis had feelings for her friend Katherine Moore’s husband, Herman Rogers, the World War One veteran and businessman.

In fact, he claims that there was a “very odd triangular relationship” between Wallis, Edward and Herman with the Duke said to be more like a child than a partner to Wallis.

He continued: “[Wallis] told Herman’s second wife, Lucy Wann, that he was the only man she had ever truly loved.

“Herman acted at times more like Wallis’s husband than her friend. And Edward acted more like her little boy than her husband.”

When Edward finally succumbed to death in the early hours of May 28, 1972, Ms Alexander remembered pitying the former King who she felt had died in the wrong woman’s arms.

The nurse, who like Wallis grew up in Baltimore, Maryland, recalled thinking: “The poor Duke of Windsor died in the arms of the wrong Baltimore woman.”

While some accounts claim that Edward died in Wallis’s arms, the couple’s secretary John Utter told writer Hugo Vickers that she was asleep when he died, adding that he had had to wake her to break the news.

When Edward abdicated decades earlier, he told the nation and the world that he did so for the woman that he loved. It follows that many believe his and Wallis’s was one of the “great love affairs” of the twentieth century.

Yet historian Andrew Lownie, writing in his 2021 book Traitor King, highlighted that others felt the American socialite was “trapped in a marriage that she had never wanted”.

According to their friend Mona Eldridge, quoted in Mr Lownie’s book, they both lived unhappy lives. She said: “The Duke and Duchess led totally self-centred lives; there was no consideration for anything but the gratification of their own needs. The life they led was borne out of disappointment, frustration and unfulfilled expectations.”

Trending

Similarly, Mr Lownie writes that the Duke and Duchess’s marriage was quite the “contrary” to a great romance. He said Wallis was “emotionally blackmailed” into marriage, only sticking it out because “she had no other option”.

He continued: “She had been attracted to him as Prince of Wales and King, but that attraction had waned after he had given up his throne, leading to a mixture of guilt, pity, dissatisfaction, boredom and irritation.

“ The affairs , the constant shopping, the travel and entertaining were an attempt to provide some stimulation in a life with little meaning and with a man she did not love.”

Wallis died several years after Edward from bronchial pneumonia in Paris at the age of 89 on April 24, 1986.

Binyavanga Wainaina, Pioneering Voice in African Literature, Dies at 48

May 22, 2019 by www.nytimes.com Leave a Comment

Binyavanga Wainaina, the acclaimed Kenyan author who inspired a generation of writers and became one of the most prominent Africans ever to publicly identify as gay, died on Tuesday in Nairobi. He was 48.

His brother, James Wainaina, said he died at a hospital after a short illness. A specific cause was not given.

Mr. Wainaina, an author, publisher, journalist and commentator, was seen as one of the most important voices in African literature. He won the Caine Prize for African Writing in 2002 and went on to establish Kwani?, a literary magazine that offered a platform for new Kenyan writers.

His essay “ How to Write About Africa ,” published in the British literary journal Granta in 2005, became a minor sensation, offering a biting critique of foreign journalists’ and authors’ clichéd approach to covering the continent.

“Treat Africa as if it were one country,” he wrote in the essay, saying that the characters must include “the Starving African, who wanders the refugee camp nearly naked, and waits for the benevolence of the West.”

“She must look utterly helpless,” he added.

As his success grew, Mr. Wainaina privately grappled with his sexuality. In 2014, he published what he described as a “ lost chapter ” from his life story. An intensely personal essay, titled “I am a homosexual, Mum,” it describes an imagined conversation with his mother before she died in 2000.

The essay drew strong reaction in Africa, where same-sex relationships are widely prohibited and can be punished with prison time in several countries.

Named one of Time magazine’s 100 most influential people in 2014, Mr. Wainaina was honored by the Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.

“By publicly and courageously declaring that he is a gay African,” Ms. Adichie wrote, “Binyavanga has demystified and humanized homosexuality and begun a necessary conversation that can no longer be about the ‘faceless other.’ ”

Kenneth Binyavanga Wainaina was born in Nakuru, Kenya, on Jan. 18, 1971. His mother, Rosemary (Binyavanga) Wainaina, ran a hair salon there, and his father, Job, was a successful executive.

His family called him Ken, but the “exotic” name Binyavanga “gave me a thrill,” he said in an interview with The New York Times in 2014, and he began going by his middle name.

In 2011, Mr. Wainaina published a memoir, “One Day I Will Write About This Place,” which was a critical success at home and abroad. Readers noticed the absence of a love life, he said , but at the time, he thought, “I’m not ready to go there.”

By 2014, after ruminating for several months about whether to come out publicly, he published the “lost chapter” from his memoir online. In the essay, he described knowing he was gay since he was a young boy, but secretly struggling with that awareness for years.

“This feeling has made me suddenly ripped apart and lonely,” he wrote of the experience of shaking a man’s hand at age 7. “The feeling is not sexual. It is certain. It is overwhelming. It wants to make a home. It comes every few months like a bout of malaria and leaves me shaken for days, and confused for months. I do nothing about it.”

He began exploring his sexuality after his mother’s death. But he could not “say the word gay” until he was 39, he wrote, and he did not publish the “lost chapter” essay until he was in his 40s, after both his parents had died.

On World AIDS Day in 2016, Mr. Wainaina announced on Twitter that he was H.I.V. positive — “and happy,” he wrote.

He proposed to his partner last year. “I am beside myself with excitement that he has agreed to spend the rest of his life with me,” Mr. Wainaina wrote on Twitter at the time.

The couple were scheduled to marry this year, according to the Caine Prize.

Besides his brother, he is survived by his sisters, June and Melissa.

His death drew tributes from across the literary and artistic worlds.

Somi, a singer of Rwandan and Ugandan descent who was friends with Mr. Wainaina for more than a decade, described him as “a pioneer, in so many senses, in so many different spaces.”

His activism, and in particular his message in “How to Write About Africa,” she said, offered “a necessary call to arms in disrupting the Western gaze of African stories.”

Ellah Wakatama Allfrey, a trustee of the Caine Prize and the publishing director of the independent Indigo Press, praised Mr. Wainaina for “the wings he gave to a generation of writers.”

“Unflagging in his generosity, unflinching and direct in his criticism,” she said, “he produced work in his short life that will have impact longer lasting than those whose time here is twice as long.”

Heartbreak as toddler Raffy Holliday, 3, dies after catching herpes as parents share devastating warning

May 29, 2023 by www.thesun.co.uk Leave a Comment

A TODDLER has died after catching herpes – as his devastated parents share a heartbreaking warning.

Three-year-old Raffy Holliday’s mum Imogen, 35, from Deal in Kent , wants the NHS to do more to protect transplant patients.

Raffy died at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) in March after suffering inflammation of the brain caused by the human herpesvirus 6B (HHV-6B).

HHV-6B is one of nine strains of the herpes virus.

It causes the common childhood illness exanthema subitem, also known as roseola or sixth disease, which shows up as a mild fever and rash.

Some 70 per cent of children will get HHV-6B by the age of three, with most developing a natural immunity that stops them falling ill again.

Yet further sickness is common in transplant patients and can be fatal for those with weakened immune systems.

AT RISK

Raffy, who was undergoing treatment for leukaemia and had received a bone marrow transplant, lived with the active virus for two years before it took his life.

After his transplant in 2020, he was tested on a weekly basis for three other strains of the human herpes virus – Epstein Barr which causes glandular fever , cytomegalovirus which causes mononucleosis, and adenovirus which causes the common cold.

Imogen says she was told by medics he would not be routinely tested for the HHV-6B strain unless he became neutropenic – when a type of white blood cell called neutrophils drops below a certain level, severely weakening the immune system.

The toddler was lacking in T-cells, another type of white blood cell which helps to protect the body from infection, following his transplant.

Imogen and her husband James, 32, want the NHS to add HHV-6B to the list of standard weekly viral tests carried out on patients post-transplant.

She stressed there is no suggestion Raffy contracted the virus in hospital as it is incredibly common among children.

The mum-of-four said: “Raffy didn’t have an immune system. He didn’t have anything to fight the virus off. It progressed from his blood into his organs and became very dangerous.

“HHV-6B is the most commonly reactivated form of the herpes virus post-transplant, so I can’t understand why they don’t test for it. It’s frustrating.

“The hospital told us they don’t normally see HHV-6B do what it did to Raffy, but it can and it did. We don’t have our son anymore because of it.

“You can’t prepare for losing a child. You don’t imagine it will happen to you. It shouldn’t be our reality but sadly it is.

“We want people to understand the severity of this virus. It’s opportunistic and it isn’t cell specific. It will infect and take over all kinds of different cells. And it can live dormant in the body.”

At one point after his transplant Raffy went for more than seven months without being tested or monitored for HHV-6B, Imogen claims.

During this time he suffered from ulcerative colitis, gut bleeds, external ulcers, mouth sores, two bouts of pancreatitis, a blood clot, death of tissue in the spleen, a bleed between his brain and skull, and seizures.

‘SENSE OF COMFORT’

The mum-of-four now wants people to sign her petition, which she will present to the NHS when it hits 10,000 signatures.

She hopes the ‘Red Duck’ campaign, named in honour of Raffy’s favourite colour and animal, will raise the profile of HHV-6B among both medical staff and the public.

The stay-at-home mum, who has another toddler and two teenage sons, said focusing on the campaign has helped the family to deal with their grief.

Imogen added: “We found that channelling our grief into something positive – where we can still talk about Raffy all the time, share his story, and stop the same thing happening to someone else – gives us a sense of comfort.

“Not having him around anymore will never feel right but it’s a case of getting used to a new normal.

“Some days are harder than others. Some days I can’t think for the tears. But this is a really healthy distraction.”

GOSH said it followed European Conference on Infections in Leukaemia (ECIL) guidelines.

A GOSH spokesperson said in a statement: “We would like to express our heartfelt condolences to Raffy’s family.

“We are aware that the family have concerns, which we are taking seriously, and we are communicating with the family about these concerns.

“Many of the children we see at GOSH have complex and rare illnesses, but however complicated their treatment is, we always endeavour to get things right for the children and their families.

What is Herpesvirus 6 (HBLV/HHV-6)?

Herpesvirus 6 (HBLV/HHV-6) is common in young people with a lowered immune system.

Some 90 per cent of humans are infected within the first three years of life.

It causes roseola infantum in children, which usually shows up as a temperature and rash.

It has historically been called “baby measles” because a key symptom is a rose pink rash around 5mm wide with a surrounding halo.

The rash, which appears and spreads outwards from a child’s chest, usually lasts between one and two days.

Usually, patients get better naturally after around seven days.

Parents call for more herpes tests in hospitals after son, 3, died of the virus

May 29, 2023 by metro.co.uk Leave a Comment

The parents of a toddler who died after contracting herpes want hospitals to test for the virus more often.

Raffy Holliday was only three when he died at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) in March. He suffered inflammation of the brain caused by the human herpesvirus 6B (HHV-6B).

HHV-6B is one of nine strains of herpes and also causes the common childhood illness exanthema subitem, also known as roseola or sixth disease.

The majority of children – around 70% – will have contracted HHV-6B by the age of three, with most developing a natural immunity.

However the virus can be reactivated in transplant patient.

Raffy had received a bone marrow transplant during his treatment for leukaemia, and tragically the virus can be fatal for those with weakened immune systems.

Following the transplant in 2020 he was tested weekly for three other strains of herpes, but Raffy’s mum Imogen Holliday was told he wouldn’t be routinely tested for HHV-6B unless his neutrophils – a type of white blood cell – dropped below a certain level.

This is despite the fact that Raffy was lacking in T-cells following his transplant. They are another type of white blood cell which help to protect the body from infection.

Imogen, 35 and from Deal in Kent, is now campaigning for the NHS to add the HHV-6B strain to the list of standard weekly tests for post-transplant patients.

Imogen, who also wanted to stress there’s no suggestion Raffy contracted herpes at GOSH, said: ‘Raffy didn’t have an immune system. He didn’t have anything to fight the virus off. It progressed from his blood into his organs and became very dangerous.

Imogen, who is campaigning alongside her husband James, 32, claims at one point Raffy went for more than seven months without being tested for HHV-6B.

During this time the virus caused him to develop ulcerative colitis, gut bleeds, external ulcers, mouth sores, two bouts of pancreatitis, a blood clot, death of tissue in the spleen, a bleed between his brain and skull, and seizures.
