Denver auto-theft ring responsible for at least 130 stolen cars worth more than $3 million since 2021, indictment alleges

May 19, 2022 by www.denverpost.com Leave a Comment

Eleven people stole at least 130 cars from streets and parking lots across metro Denver and then used the credit cards and identification documents found inside to commit more crimes, according to a grand jury indictment announced Thursday.

Their targeted locations included a Lowes parking lot, an RTD parking lot, hotel parking lots and neighborhood streets. They also broke into dealerships and repair shops, where they entered offices and stole keys to multiple cars, as well as key programmers and anything else of value.

If they found credit cards, checkbooks or identification documents, they then tried to use those items to make purchases or commit identity fraud, according to the indictment.

Investigators with the Colorado Metropolitan Auto Theft Task Force estimated that the total value of the stolen cars and property exceeded $3.1 million. The thefts spanned the northern Front Range, from Weld County to Douglas County, from Boulder to Aurora.

The members of the auto-theft ring, who range in age from 19 to 34, face a combined 74 counts for the thefts and other associated crimes between February 2021 and May 2022. Beyond vehicle theft, the counts include possession of weapons by previous offenders, cybercrime, identity theft, assault and drug charges. Investigators allege the members of the conspiracy stole cars in part to pay for drugs.

The indictment comes as the Denver area continues to suffer a sharp spike in auto thefts. The number of thefts more than doubled from just under 13,000 in 2019 to more than 27,000 last year — or more than 70 a day.

The members of the alleged auto-theft ring abandoned some of the cars, kept some for their own use and tried to sell others through Facebook. Investigators recovered fingerprints from members of the group on the inside of some of the stolen vehicles. Several members of the group had guns and drugs on them when they were arrested, the indictment states.

When confronted by law enforcement, members of the ring sometimes sped away recklessly in an attempt to escape. One member crashed into a home in Northglenn after he fled police.

“If confronted by law enforcement officers or theft victims, enterprise members engaged in reckless maneuvers, including, but not limited to, ramming vehicles, driving over obstacles, fleeing at high speed and entering on-coming lanes of traffic,” the indictment states.

One of the group members, Susana Garcia, on March 28 ran over a man who tried to keep her from stealing a car, the indictment states. The car’s owner, whose name is redacted, jumped on the hood of the car as she drove from a parking lot onto South Monaco Street. Garcia sped up, weaved and made a U-turn to try to knock the owner off.

When she succeeded, she ran him over and drove away, according to the indictment. The car was recovered three days later.

At least three of the group’s members had previous convictions connected to vehicle theft.

“Members continued to commit crimes to support themselves and each other, even when one or more members were caught and briefly jailed,” the indictment states. “After being bonded from jail, the bonded members immediately began committing more crimes to support themselves and other members.”

The Denver District Attorney’s Office will prosecute the cases, according to a news release from the office.

Her latest sighting comes just weeks after she raved that the ‘greatest thing in life is seeing’ her ‘daughter go from strength to strength.’

‘We’re so excited to be expanding the family. It’s the best blessing ever,’ she continued.

The happy couple was initially linked after they were seen getting affectionate at a 2016 concert in the Netherlands.

The singer was previously romantically involved with figures such as Taylor Swift and Gigi Hadid before he met his now-wife.

Turner and Jonas went on to announce that they had become engaged after a year of dating in October of 2017.

The couple shocked many when they held a wedding ceremony in Las Vegas in May of 2019.

Growing family: In March, reports emerged that Turner and Jonas were expecting another little one

The pair held a second wedding ceremony, which took place in France, later that year.

It was revealed that the X-Men: Apocalypse actress was pregnant with her first child in February of 2020.

Turner later gave birth to her firstborn that same July, and she and her husband have often been spotted while spending time with their daughter.

Earlier this month, the actress spoke out about how the pressure from starring in Game Of Thrones coupled with social media use ‘completely consumed’ her.

Going strong: Turner and Jonas went on to announce that they had become engaged after a year of dating in October of 2017

Sophie confessed that she has since distanced herself from Instagram as comments would make her feel ‘fat’ and ‘undesirable.’

Speaking in a candid interview with Elle magazine, Sophie revealed that she had a companion during her 2019 battle: ‘It’s a live-in therapist, who would ensure I wasn’t doing anything unhealthy with my eating habits.

‘One night, I was playing over and over in my mind a comment I’d seen on Instagram, I was like, “I’m so fat, I’m so undesirable,” and spinning out.’

Happier than ever: Since the end of her hit HBO series in 2019, Sophie has said motherhood was ‘the perfect thing to move on to’ (seen in late March)

Sophie explained how she had noticed social media was making her ‘incredibly anxious’ and has since distanced herself from the apps.

She continued: ‘I wish I’d never got myself involved with it in the first place. I look at the comments on Instagram and think, “Oh, f**k. Everyone thinks this about me.” It would completely consume me.’

Since the end of her hit HBO series in 2019, Sophie has said motherhood was ‘the perfect thing to move on to.’

Best chapter yet: Back in March of 2021, Sophie wrote on Instagram that being a mother was ‘my favourite job I’ve ever had’ (seen with Jonas earlier this month)

At the time, Sophie spoke out about her ongoing battle with mental health and depression in April 2019.

She revealed how she was forced to turn to therapy when film and TV studios pressured her to lose weight amid her woes.

Sophie made the admission during an interview with Marie Claire Australia, where she explained: ‘Everyone needs a therapist, especially when people are constantly telling you you’re not good enough and you don’t look good enough.

In character: Sophie recently admitted she found it hard to grow up on screen on HBO’s Game of Thrones (pictured), where she plays Sansa Stark, having started the show at just 13 years old

‘I think it’s necessary to have someone to talk to and to help you through that.’

Back in March of 2021, Sophie wrote on Instagram that being a mother was ‘my favourite job I’ve ever had.’

That new job has taken some getting used to for the singer and the actress. In June, Joe admitted that his busy touring schedule made balancing family and work difficult.

Telling the world:  The couple confirmed the news of their new arrival in a statement released in July 2020 that said they were ‘delighted to announce the birth of their baby’

‘It’s definitely a new experience now that we are all kind of back. I’m going on tour, she’s starting a project,’ he told E!’s DailyPop. ‘It’s going to be a lot of flying back and forth on days off, for me at least. It’s kind of a new territory.’

U.S. Reports More Than 200,000 Covid Cases—Highest Level Since February

Topline

The U.S. on Wednesday reported more than 200,000 Covid-19 cases for the first time since February, according to a tracker run by Johns Hopkins University, as multiple lineages of the highly infectious omicron variant of the coronavirus, as the country finds itself in the middle of another growing wave of infections.

Key Facts

According to the JHU tracker, the U.S. reported a total of 208,383 new Covid-19 cases on Wednesday—the highest it has been since February 11—along with 943 deaths.

Experts are concerned the U.S. may be on the cusp of a sixth wave of infections fueled by omicron subvariants, the Associated Press reports .

During a White House briefing , CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky urged local governments to encourage mask-wearing in public places and other mitigation strategies like increased testing to prevent another wave across the country.

Walensky noted that the Northeast, Eastern Corridor and upper Midwest regions of the country are witnessing increased cases and hospitalizations, an area where nearly one-third of the American population lives.

At the same briefing, Dr. Ashish Jha, the coordinator of the White House’s Covid-19 task force, said the “use of rapid tests is a very effective way of keeping infections down” as people can test themselves prior to attending a large gathering or meeting people who are vulnerable.

Jha also urged Congress to pass additional funding to buy adequate shots for all Americans once new generation Covid-19 vaccines are available in the fall or winter.

Big Number

50.9%. That’s the percentage of Covid-19 cases in the U.S. that were caused by the BA.2 subvariant of omicron last week, according to surveillance data released by the Centers for Disease Control And Prevention (CDC). The fast-rising BA.2.12.1 subvariant now accounts for 47.5% of cases while different variants of omicron cover nearly 100% of all U.S. cases.

Crucial Quote

“Variants will continue to emerge if the virus circulates globally…We can keep the level of virus to the lowest possible level, which is the best way to avoid variants. Because the less replication, the less mutation; the less mutation, the less variants,” Dr. Anthony Fauci, the U.S. government’s top infectious disease official said. He added that vaccines “continue to provide strong protection against severe disease.”

Key Background

Even as Covid-19 cases have risen across parts of the U.S., local officials have been reluctant to reintroduce mask mandates or any other form of restrictions. Earlier this week, New York City’s Democratic Mayor Eric Adams said the city was “not at the point” where it will reintroduce measures like mask mandates or requiring vaccine passes. The city, however, has issued an advisory encouraging people to voluntarily mask up indoors and raised its virus alert level to ‘High’. Boston Mayor Michelle Wu also noted that the city doesn’t plan to issue a mask mandate but is recommending that people should wear them. In February, the CDC updated its guidance on mask-wearing, recommending them only in areas that report high levels of severe cases.

Casino business booms in 2021, but Louisiana lags behind

May 19, 2022 by www.theadvocate.com Leave a Comment

While 2021 set a national record for casino revenues, Louisiana’s state-regulated gambling halls brought in less money last year than they did pre-pandemic.

The 19 riverboats, racinos and Harrah’s land-based casino brought in $2.38 billion during 2021, a 43.5% increase over the COVID-marred 2020, but down 3.2% from 2019.

The decrease in revenue compared with 2019 was blamed on the impact of hurricanes, according to the American Gaming Association. In August 2020, Hurricane Laura unmoored the gambling barge at the Isle of Capri Lake Charles and significantly damaged the land-based facility the casino was in the process of moving into. The casino has been closed since then.

Hurricane Ida shut down New Orleans- and Baton Rouge-area casinos for several days in August and September.

Along with the Isle of Capri being temporarily closed, DiamondJacks in Bossier City wasn’t open at all in 2021. The struggling property announced in May 2020 it would not reopen after being closed because of the pandemic. But while the Isle is on track to reopen by the end of the year as Horseshoe Casino Lake Charles, the future of DiamondJacks is unknown. An attempt to move the casino was roundly defeated by St. Tammany Parish voters.

Matt Roob, senior vice president of analysis for Spectrum Gaming Group, which analyzed the state’s gambling market for Louisiana Economic Development in 2019, said other factors could have caused the drop in casino winnings from pre-pandemic levels.

For one, video poker winnings, which are not counted in the gambling association report, shot up more than $200 million from 2019 to 2021, an increase of 34.5%. Video poker machines brought in $839.2 million in 2021, compared with $623.8 million.

The increase happened despite the number of video poker devices dropping from 12,903 at the end of 2019 to 12,072 at the end of 2021.

“People may be shifting their play and staying closer to home,” Roob said. “They may still be concerned about getting out in the pandemic world.”

The other factor in the drop in revenue could be the maturation of the Mississippi sports betting market, Roob said. Sportsbooks on the Mississippi Gulf Coast were relatively new in 2019, but by 2021, they were more established. Mississippi generated a record $65.9 million in sports betting revenue during 2021. The first sportsbooks in Louisiana regulated casinos didn’t open until Halloween 2021.

Twice daily we’ll send you the day’s biggest headlines. Sign up today.

“People may have become accustomed to sports betting and moved their gambling over to Mississippi,” Roob said.

The gambling association issued its annual State of the States report last week, examining gambling’s performance across the country.

As previously reported, nationwide casino revenue set an all-time high in 2021 at $53.03 billion, up 21% from the previous best year, 2019, before the coronavirus pandemic hit.

Commercial casinos paid a record $11.69 billion in direct gambling tax revenue to state and local governments in 2021. That’s an increase of 75% from 2020 and 15% from 2019. This does not include the billions more paid in income, sales and other taxes, the association said.

The report also ranked the largest markets in the U.S. in terms of revenue for 2021. Naturally, the Las Vegas Strip was the runaway leader, with $7.05 billion in revenue. Atlantic City, New Jersey, was second at $2.57 billion. In third and fourth place were two major metro areas that recently legalized sports betting: Chicago with $2.01 billion and Baltimore-Washington, D.C., at $2 billion. The 12 Mississippi Gulf Coast casinos brought in $1.61 billion in 2021.

The Gulf Coast casinos also set a revenue record in 2021, despite closures caused by Ida. The gambling association said the properties saw their winnings increase by more than 20% compared with 2019. That was the biggest growth of any casino market. The Tunica/Lula market had the second largest growth from pre-pandemic levels, increasing by more than 15%. The seven casinos brought in $1.09 billion, the best year for the market since 2013.

The group reported many states saw gamblers spending more in casinos while visiting them in lower numbers compared with pre-pandemic 2019.

The average age of a casino patron last year was 43½, compared to 49½ in 2019.

Americans bet $57.7 billion on sports last year, more than twice the amount from 2020. That generated $4.33 billion in revenue, an increase of nearly 180% over 2020.

Nearly 60mn people internally displaced worldwide in 2021

May 19, 2022 by www.thehindu.com Leave a Comment

Conflicts and natural disasters forced tens of millions of people to flee within their own country last year, pushing the number of internally displaced people to a record high, monitors said on May 19. Some 59.1 million people were registered as internally displaced worldwide in 2021 — an all-time record expected to be broken again this year amid mass displacement inside war-torn Ukraine .

Around 38 million new internal displacements were reported in 2021, with some people forced to flee multiple times during the year, according to a joint report by the Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre (IDMC) and the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC).

That marks the second-highest annual number of new internal displacements in a decade after 2020, which saw record-breaking movement due to a string of natural disasters.

Last year, new internal displacements from conflict surged to 14.4 million — marking a 50% jump from 2020 and more than doubling since 2012, the report showed. And global internal displacement figures are only expected to grow this year, driven in particular by the war in Ukraine .

More than eight million people have already been displaced within the war-ravaged country since Russia’s full-scale invasion began on February 24, in addition to the more than six million who have fled Ukraine as refugees. “2022 is looking bleak,” IDMC director Alexandra Bilak told reporters.

The record numbers seen in 2021, she said, marked “a tragic indictment really on the state of the world and on peace-building efforts in particular”. NRC chief Jan Egeland agreed, warning: “It has never been as bad as this.” “The world is falling apart,” he told reporters. “The situation today is phenomenally worse than even our record figure suggests.”

In 2021, sub-Saharan Africa counted the most internal movements, with more than five million displacements reported in Ethiopia alone, as the country grappled with the raging and expanding Tigray conflict and a devastating drought. That marks the highest figure ever registered for a single country.

Unprecedented displacement numbers were also recorded last year in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Afghanistan, where the Taliban’s return to power, along with drought, saw many flee their homes. In Myanmar, where the military junta seized power in a February coup last year, displacement numbers also reached a record high, the report found.

The Middle East and North Africa region recorded its lowest number of new displacements in a decade, as the conflicts in Syria, Libya and Iraq de-escalated somewhat, but the overall number of displaced people in the region remained high.

Syria, where civil war has been raging for more than 11 years, still accounted for the world’s highest number of people living in internal displacement due to conflict — 6.7 million — at the end of 2021.

That was followed by the DR Congo at 5.3 million, Colombia at 5.2 million, and Afghanistan and Yemen at 4.3 million. Despite the hike in conflict-related displacement, natural disasters continued to account for most new internal displacement, spurring 23.7 million such movements in 2021.

A full 94% of those were attributed to weather and climate-related disasters, such as cyclones, monsoon rains, floods and droughts. Experts say that climate change is increasing the intensity and frequency of such extreme weather events. China, the Philippines and India were hardest hit, together accounting for around 70% of all disaster-related displacements last year.

Increasingly, conflict and disasters collide, creating a “complex quagmire of problems”, Mr. Egeland said, worsening risks and often forcing people to flee several times. In places such as Mozambique, Myanmar, Somalia and South Sudan, overlapping crises impact food security and heighten the vulnerabilities of millions.

“We need a titanic shift in thinking from world leaders on how to prevent and resolve conflicts to end this soaring human suffering,” Mr. Egeland said.
