Sikander Bakht questions Babar Azam’s captaincy skills

March 20, 2023 by www.thenews.com.pk Leave a Comment

Not long after rumours that the national side skipper Babar Azam ‘s captaincy was in danger, Former Pakistani Test cricketer Sikander Bakht criticised the national side captain saying Babar is not a “born leader”.

Babar lacks the skills of a born leader, Bakht said during a recent interview on a YouTube channel.

He said: “Honestly speaking, Babar has to learn a lot as a captain. There are so many people who are born as leaders. Babar is not a born leader.”

“When he was given the captaincy, I said in my interview that he wasn’t a good choice. I wanted him to prove me wrong by showing his captaincy but he didn’t,” the cricketer-turned-analyst said.

While giving examples of Babar’s weaknesses in captaincy, Bakht highlighted that he didn’t utilise Agha Salman and Iftikhar Ahmed with the ball in the recent Test series.

“Let me give you a recent example. Agha Salman is an off-spinner, Babar only gave two-three overs to him in one Test, and in another match, he let him bowl complete overs. He also didn’t utilise Iftikhar,” he recalled.

Under Babar’s captaincy, Pakistan lost five Tests, won one, and drew three out of nine they played in 2022. They lost the home Test series against Australia and England.

Moreover, Bakht questioned Babar’s captaincy skills while making decisions according to the situation.

“So many times I think Babar does scripted captaincy. He pens down the plan and comes with it in the ground. It doesn’t work at all. Cricket is a game of situations. Being a captain, you have to be smart enough to react in different situations, if you don’t, then you are not a good captain,” he shared his thoughts.

“Let me tell you, Mushtaq Ahmed was our captain. He used to bring Wasim Raja, one of the great all-rounders of his time, to provide a breakthrough. So many times Mushtaq made use of Wasim and the latter provided a breakthrough to the team before Lunch,” he mentioned.

“Babar is a 50 per cent captain and he needs to learn in rest of the 50 per cent,” he concluded.

Under Babar, Pakistan have played 60 international matches from 2019 to 2022. They won 40 and lost 21. Babar also led the Pakistan team to the semi-final of ICC T20 World Cup 2021, final of ICC T20 World Cup 2022 and the Asia Cup 2022.

Potch a dress rehearsal for Dutch ODIs

It isn’t often that the dress rehearsal looms as a taller order than opening night, but that’s South Africa’s reality going into the third men’s ODI against West Indies in Potchefstroom on Tuesday.

What comes next for the South Africans – two ODIs against the Netherlands in Benoni on March 31 and at the Wanderers on April 2 – will likely decide whether the home side qualify directly for the World Cup in India in October or November, or will have to bother with a qualifying tournament in Zimbabwe in June and July.

The first match of the current series, at Buffalo Park in East London on Thursday, was washed out without a ball bowled. The visitors won the second, at the same ground on Saturday by 48 runs. In a word, handsomely. Tuesday’s game, like the first two, counts for nought on the World Cup Super League standings – unlike the matches against the Dutch.

But the West Indians are easily stronger opponents than the Netherlands, who have lost all five ODIs between the sides. That said, Dutch supporters are no doubt still glowing in the wake of their team’s deserved win over South Africa at the T20 World Cup in Adelaide in November. Maybe lightning doesn’t strike in the same place twice, but a committed XI could.

Even though that seems unlikely given South Africa’s apparent revitalisation under new coaches Shukri Conrad and Rob Walter, no-one will make the mistake of taking victory over the Dutch for granted. The best way to prepare to nail down wins in those games is to hit the ground running on Tuesday.

With Aiden Markram, Heinrich Klaasen and David Miller in the squad – they weren’t for the first two games – South Africa’s batting should be more solid than it was on Saturday, when they debuted four players in the format. But the Windies have strength in depth in all departments, which will make them slight favourites to earn a third white-ball series win in South Africa.

Both teams know winning on Tuesday won’t move the needle on their bid to reach the World Cup, and the West Indians seem resigned to having to go to Zimbabwe to make it to India. That leaves the match in an awkward place; somewhere between a middle practice and an experiment.

So, rather than a hard-fought contest, expect an intriguing spectacle on a ground where 300 hasn’t been breached in the six list A games played there since the start of last year. And where the team batting second have won only two of those matches. And also where the sides who have won batting first have dismissed their opponents all four times. Expect a dress rehearsal, and pretend it’s opening night.

When: March 21, 2023; 10am Local Time (1.30pm IST)

Where: JB Marks Oval, Potchefstroom

What to expect: A flat pitch, a temperature of 31 degrees Celsius, and a thunderstorm in the afternoon, when a 40% chance of rain has been forecast.

Team news:

South Africa: Aiden Markram and Heinrich Klaasen return to the squad from rests and David Miller from the PSL. They could replace Ryan Rickelton, Rassie van der Dussen and Tristan Stubbs.

Possible XI: Quinton de Kock, Temba Bavuma (capt), Aiden Markram, Tony de Zorzi, Heinrich Klaasen, David Miller, Marco Jansen, Bjorn Fortuin, Gerald Coetzee, Lungi Ngidi, Tabraiz Shamsi

West Indies: Why fiddle with an XI that won well in Buffalo Park’s not dissimilar conditions on Saturday?

Possible XI: Brandon King, Kyle Mayers, Shamarh Brooks, Shai Hope (capt), Nicholas Pooran, Rovman Powell, Jason Holder, Akeal Hosein, Odean Smith, Alzarri Joseph, Yannic Cariah

What they said:

“I’ve been there for many years now and I want to make the impact that I can, on and off the field, with the new guys in the squad so they can feed off my experience and learning. I am always learning myself; learning from them as well. The young guys have different thought processes.” – David Miller on being a big fish in a pond not short of younger, smaller fish.

“It’s something we speak about in meetings. We’re just trying to win more games. We didn’t have a successful 2022 and we are trying everything to turn it around,” – Shai Hope on the Windies’ emphasis on forward momentum in the wake of losing 16 of their 21 ODIs last year.

Shikhar Dhawan uploaded a reel on social media on Monday in which he could be seen playing the role of a police personnel. “Aali Re Aali! Aata Tujhi Baari Aali! Coming Soon For Something New,” the southpaw captioned the post. The short clip had Dhawan dressed up in police uniform. In the video he fights the goons with the song ‘Singham’ running in background. In the latter part of the reel, the goons could be seen surrendering themselves in front of the India batter.

Shikhar Dhawan finds himself out of the Indian team since an ODI against the Bangladesh in December 2022. The 37-year-old opener has not yet given up on a strong desire to play the World Cup at home later this year.

One of the finest openers India have produced in the 50-over format, Dhawan was dropped from the side following a lean run which included the three games in Bangladesh in December. The southpaw had led the side in New Zealand in November when Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul were rested.

Shubman Gill came into the team at Dhawan’s expense and the young opener has not looked back ever since. His back-to-back impressive performances have helped him cement his place in the team as an opener.

Start Of T20 League In US With IPL Investment Likely To Change Cricketing Ecosystem Forever | Cricket News

March 20, 2023 by sports.ndtv.com Leave a Comment

The world cricket’s ecosystem is slowly seeing a paradigm shift towards franchise cricket and the entry of Indian Premier League franchises in the United States through the inaugural edition of Major League Cricket (MLC) could be a significant step in that direction. With Kolkata Knight Riders (Los Angeles), Chennai Super Kings (Texas), Mumbai Indians (New York) and Delhi Capitals (Seattle Orcas) taking ownership or making significant investments in four of the six franchises (the other two being Washington Freedom and San Francisco Unicorns), the cricketing landscape is going to change forever.

Even the two franchises which don’t have IPL investments are also owned by persons of Indian origin. San Francisco Unicorns’ top investors are Venture Capitalists Venky Hariharan and Anand Rajaraman, who have got Australian state side Victoria on board.

Washington Freedom is owned by Indian American Sanjay Govil along with New South Wales state cricket body from Australia. Not to forget Seattle has Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella as one of the investors.

But the IPL franchises are now expanding their bouquet of teams across leagues in the West Indies, UAE, South Africa and now US is another untapped market that wasn’t being explored for a long time despite the Asian diaspora craving for some regular cricket show at least once a year.

On Monday, early morning India time (Sunday night in Houston), the likes of former Australia captain Aaron Finch (San Francisco), Quinton de Kock (Seattle Orcas), a former South African skipper and even now a batting mainstay, premier pacer Anrich Nortje (Washington), Sri Lanka’s top T20 freelancer Wanindu Hasaranga (Washington), dashing all-rounders Mitchell Marsh (Seattle) and Marcus Stoinis (SF Unicorns) are the first lot of quality internationals picked up by ‘Draft System’, which is a Major League thing.

Sponsored by Vuukle

In major US sports like basketball, baseball, there are no auctions held and only the draft picks, and hence that has been followed by the Major League Cricket as well.

“A private cricket league in the US is very different from private leagues in, say the UAE or South Africa. But in terms of revenue model, I expect the MLC to be much more successful in coming years,” said Hemant Dua, former CEO of erstwhile Delhi Daredevils, who has worked in franchise business model of sport for years.

Dua, then explained why USA has potential to be successful.

“Building infrastructure is the least of the problems in the US. Also, the Asian diaspora that (Indians, Bangladeshis, Pakistanis, Sri Lankans) comprises of people with more white-collared jobs and more disposable income than majority of the Asian diaspora in the UAE.

“Plus the UAE league is more dependant on international players but Indians in US will support their locals too. You need to factor in all these issues. One thing what MLC organisers need to look at is Indian audience timings to garner greater broadcast revenue.”

We might see more retirements in future in India

The club versus country debate has been raging for some time. The BCCI doesn’t allow its active cricketers to play any other leagues apart from IPL but the start of Major League Cricket in US could see a lot of domestic retirements in India because of the propensity to migrate to the US.

Take the case of Unmukt Chand and Milind Kumar , who have found takers in the inaugural season after chucking their domestic cricket careers in India, which wasn’t going anywhere.

“If you are not ensured earning of at least 15 crore from IPL in five years, or you aren’t a top-line India international with endorsements and Rs 50-crore plus earnings, why would you stay back?” an IPL franchise source told PTI while discussing the possibilities.

“A retirement from all forms of cricket in India opens avenues to play multiple T20 leagues, earn at least 6-8 crore per year for 4-6 months of work and also maintain a fine work-life balance. But, yes, this holds true for only skilled T20 players with no ambitions of playing red-ball cricket and I can vouch, there are many,” he added.

While the ICC has already set the next five years’ FTP in place after consultation with the various major international cricket boards, the lure of six months of work and six months’ leave and plying trade in only private leagues, is a reality that is knocking hard on the establishment’s door.

Recently, the custodians of the game, MCC, after its annual meeting stated: “The men’s cricket schedule in 2023 is saturated with franchise competitions, which overlay and compete with the ICC Future Tours Programme (FTP) of bilateral international cricket, recently released until 2027. The only gap in the combined schedules this year is in October and November when the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup takes place in India.” The Federation of International Cricketers Association (FICA) had released its annual report a few months back which had stated that around 40 per cent of the current cricketers in the market are freelancers and there are 49 per cent, who are ready to reject central contract for plying trade in private leagues.
