Laurence Fox updates Live: Ava Evans ‘still waiting for apology’ as GB News suspend Fox

September 27, 2023 by www.mirror.co.uk Leave a Comment

The female journalist who was the subject of Laurence Fox ’s vile rant on GB News has said she is “really hurt” by the comments made by the former actor.

“I’m shocked by it, I’m really shocked that it went out,” Ava Evans told Jeremy Vine on his Channel 5 show this morning. “Actually, do you know this is the sort of talk that you worry that men have about you when you are not in the room.” The political journalist has since gone on to tell her Twitter followers: “I haven’t had an apology yet if anyone was wondering.”

Fox appeared on Dan Wootton Tonight on Tuesday night, during which the actor turned aspiring politician made several crude and derogatory remarks about journalist Ms Evans . During the broadcast, Fox described Ms Evans as a “little woman” and declared: “We don’t need these sort of feminist 4.0” who, he said, are “pathetic and embarrassing”, adding: “Who would want to shag that?”

The comments from Fox sparked a furious backlash online – with Ms Evans telling her Twitter (aka X) followers she felt physically sick following the broadcast – and host Wootton issuing an apology . This morning, just minutes before his suspension was announced by GB News, Fox took to Twitter to stand by his comments and refuse to issue “a grovelling apology”.

Female GB News stars speak out

Several women who regularly appear on GB News have spoken out in support of Ms Evans following Fox’s vile comments.

Presenter Camilla Tominey this morning quote-tweeted GB News’ statement announcing Fox’s suspension, adding: “The right decision. Exercise your right to free speech by all means, but do it with a sense of decency. This wasn’t fair comment, it was just appalling misogyny.”

Freelance journalist Ellie Phillips, who often appears on GB News as a showbiz correspondent, shared a clip of Fox and Wootton’s conversation last night and tweeted: “This is abhorrent, reprehensible & completely unacceptable. I am revolted.

“No woman should ever be spoken about like this. The misogyny is sickening & I urge @GBNews to take swift, decisive action. I’m so sorry, @AvaSantina. I stand in complete solidarity with you.”

GB News staff Emily Carver also shared the resignation announcement from the channel’s Twitter account this morning, adding: “Disgusting comments. Relieved GB News has taken this action, and swiftly.” As did presenter Olivia Utley, who wrote: “Vile, unacceptable comments from Laurence Fox. Being a woman in the media is tough enough already, no one should have to put up with this. Very glad the channel is taking it seriously.”

Fox branded ‘vile neanderthal’ by Scotland First Minister

Scotland First Minister has branded Fox a “vile neanderthal”. Humza Yousaf took aim at both Fox and Wootton on Twitter earlier today.

Mr Yousaf said: “What a vile neanderthal @LozzaFox is, and an example of bystander behaviour enabling such misogyny from the presenter. I’m so sorry @AvaSantina had to listen to this. It is why men have to step up and challenge misogynistic abuse wherever we see it. Pleased Ofcom investigating.”

Within 10 minutes, Fox hit back, saying: “The feeling is entirely mutual, you vile Neanderthal.” The former actor’s post included a clip of Mr Yousaf speaking at Holyrood while justice secretary, pointing out that the majority of those in powerful positions in Scotland were white.

Owen Jones calls on GB News to ‘take against Wootton’

Journalist Owen Jones, who routinely appears on The Jeremy Vine Show, has called on GB News to take action against its presenter Wootton.

Quote-tweeting Fox’s tweet this morning, in which Fox shared a screenshot of messages seemingly between himself and Wootton, Owen wrote: “Thanks to Laurence Fox throwing him under a bus, we can see Dan Wootton lied through his teeth about being unamused by Fox’s misogyny. So what action are you going to take against Wootton, @GBNEWS?”

Wootton last tweeted at 7.40am this morning, prior to Fox’s tweets and GB News suspending the former actor. The New Zealand born journalist told his followers: “I want to reiterate my regret over last night’s exchange with Laurence on GB News.

“Having looked at the footage, I can see how inappropriate my reaction to his totally unacceptable remarks appears to be and want to be clear that I was in no way amused by the comments.

“I reacted as I did out of shock and surprise in an off guard moment while working out how to respond as he continued to speak by searching for tweets @AvaSantina had sent earlier in the day while having them read out in my ear at the same time. However, I should have intervened immediately to challenge offensive and misogynistic remarks.

“I apologise unreservedly for what was a very unfortunate lapse in judgement on my part under the intense pressure of a bizarre exchange. I know I should have done better. I’m devastated that I let down the team and our supportive GBN family. We seek to tackle the issue and not the person, which I intend to stress again on air tonight.”

Fox’s vilest remarks from GB News ‘shag’ slur to Billie Piper ‘tweet’

Fox has made numerous vile and deeply offensive remarks over the years, including burning LGBTQ+ bunting during Pride month and making disgusting comments about race.

A member of the entertainment industry’s Fox family, the controversial political commentator was once better known for his roles in Hollywood films like The Hole, in which he starred alongside Keira Knightley.

However, since appearing on Question Time in January 2020, Fox’s career as an actor has stalled and the man who was once married to Billie Piper is now a right-wing commentator – admitting to being “totally radicalised” him against “woke culture” and “political correctness”. Read all about Fox’s vilest moments over recent years here.

Fox rejects interviews requests unless ‘live and unedited’

Amid his suspension from GB News being announced, Fox is having a very active morning on social media.

Taking to Twitter (aka X) just moments ago, the former actor told his followers: “I have been approached by every MSM channel today asking for an interview. I have said I will do any interview they like as long as it’s live and unedited. Their interest wanes when they realise I am not interested in having them spin a narrative via dodgy editing.”

Questions raised about Tory MPs appearing on GB News

Amid Fox’s suspension, a debate regarding whether Conservative Party MPs should appear on GB News has kicked off. The opinion-led TV channel currently employs Conservative Party deputy chairman Lee Anderson, former Cabinet minister Sir Jacob Rees-Mogg, and Esther McVey and Philip Davies.

Asked whether that is right, Culture Secretary Lucy Frazer told ITV’s Good Morning Britain earlier today: “Well, yes, because there is a broadcasting code which identifies the rules of broadcasting and that does allow presenters who are MPs to take part in current affairs programmes.

“There are specific issues that have been taken to Ofcom in relation to particular programmes and I know that Ofcom is coming to conclusions on those particular issues.”

She dodged a question on whether Mr Anderson should consider axing his £100,000-a-year GB News show, saying: “I think I’ve made my position clear that those comments were inappropriate and unacceptable. “And I’m pleased that the channel has apologised and I know that Ofcom will be looking into this.”

During the GB News broadcast on Tuesday night, Wootton and Fox discussed Ms Evans comments made by the former LBC producer during her appearance BBC Politics Live on Monday, with the journalist attracting attention due to her remarks about men’s mental health. Following her appearance on the BBC show, Ms Evans tweeted: “I was a little rash on my anti-minister for men comments which I do regret and am actually very interested in a brief for a minister on young men’s mental health.”

Speaking via video link, Fox said: “We’re past the watershed so I can say this: show me a single self-respecting man that would like to climb into bed with that woman, ever, ever, who wasn’t an Incel?

“That little woman has been fed, spoon-fed oppression day after day after day… starting with the lie of the gender wage gap, and she’s sat there and I’m going, if I met you in a bar and that was like sentence three, chances of me just walking away are just huge. We need powerful strong amazing women who make great points for themselves, we don’t need these sort of feminist 4.0… they’re pathetic and embarrassing. Who would want to shag that?”

Giggling, Wootton replied: “Well, look, she, I’m just going to provide a touch of balance from her because she did actually respond to this earlier today, saying that she regretted her comments but she didn’t apologise.” The New Zealand born broadcaster added: “And she’s a very beautiful woman, Laurence, very beautiful woman.” Read more here.

“Do you know this is the sort of talk that you worry that men have about you when you’re not in the room. There is always sort of a worry in the back of your mind which is: ‘Are people actually interested in what I’m saying or what I’m doing?’

“Or are they just looking at me… physically and I think that that clip proves that there are some men who are.”

Britain approves new North Sea oil drilling in welcome news for the industry but not activists

British regulators on Wednesday approved new oil and gas drilling at a site in the North Sea , a move environmentalists say will hurt the country’s attempt to meet its climate goals.

The U.K.’s North Sea Transition Authority said it had approved the Rosebank Field Development Plan, “which allows the owners to proceed with their project.”

Britain’s Conservative government argues that drilling in the Rosebank field, northwest of the Shetland Islands, will create jobs and bolster the U.K.’s energy security.

One of the largest untapped deposits in U.K. waters, Rosebank holds an estimated 350 million barrels of oil.

The field is operated by Norway’s Equinor and the U.K. firm Ithaca Energy, which say they plan to invest $3.8 billion in the first phase of the project. The field is expected to start producing in 2026-2027.

Green Party lawmaker Caroline Lucas called the decision to approve drilling “morally obscene.”

“Energy security and cheaper bills aren’t delivered by allowing highly subsidized, foreign-owned fossil fuel giants to extract more oil and gas from these islands and sell it overseas to the highest bidder,” she said.

The government argues that Rosebank and other new projects will be “significantly less emissions intensive than previous developments.”

It says continuing to extract the North Sea’s dwindling oil and gas reserves “is important for maintaining domestic security of supply and making the U.K. less vulnerable to a repeat of the energy crisis that caused prices to soar after Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine.”

Critics say it’s the latest climate U-turn by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s Conservative government. Last week Sunak announced a five-year delay, until 2035, on banning new gasoline and diesel cars.

The government says it still aims to reduce the U.K.’s carbon emissions to net zero by 2050.

Energy Secretary Claire Coutinho said the U.K. was committed to investing in renewable energy, but “we will need oil and gas as part of that mix on the path to net zero and so it makes sense to use our own supplies from North Sea fields such as Rosebank.”

Black Americans express concerns about racist depictions in news media, lack of coverage efforts

In a new study, Black Americans expressed broad concerns about how they are depicted in the news media, with majorities saying they see racist or negative depictions and a lack of effort to cover broad segments of their community.

Four in five Black adults say they see racist or racially insensitive depictions of their race in the news either often or sometimes, according to the Pew Research Center .

Three years after George Floyd ‘s killing triggered a racial reckoning in the news media, Pew took its first broad-based look at Black attitudes toward the media with a survey of nearly 5,000 Black adults this past winter and follow-up focus groups.

The survey found 63% of respondents saying news about Black people is often more negative than it is toward other racial or ethnic groups, with 28% saying it is about equal.

“It’s not surprising at all,” said Charles Whitaker, dean of the Medill journalism school at Northwestern University. “We’ve known both anecdotally, and through my personal experience with the Black press, that Blacks have long been dissatisfied with their coverage.

Recommended

  • Charity boss speaks out over ‘traumatic’ encounter with royal aide

“There’s a feeling that Black Americans are often depicted as perpetrators or victims of crime, and there are no nuances in the coverage,” Whitaker said.

That attitude is reflected in the Pew study’s finding that 57% of respondents say the media only covers certain segments of Black communities, compared to 9% who say that a wide variety is depicted.

“They should put a lot more effort into providing context,” said Richard Prince, a columnist for the Journal-isms newsletter, which covers diversity issues. “They should realize that Blacks and other people of color want to be portrayed as having the same concerns as everybody else, in addition to hearing news about African American concerns.”

Advertising actually does a much better job of showing Black people in situations common to everybody, raising families or deciding where to go for dinner, he said.

Prince said he’s frequently heard concerns about Black crime victims being treated like suspects in news coverage, down to the use of police mug shots as illustrations. He recently convened a journalist’s roundtable to discuss the lingering, notorious issue of five Black men who were exonerated after being accused of attacking a white jogger in New York ‘s Central Park in the 1980s.

During a time of sharp partisan differences, the study found virtually no difference in attitudes toward news coverage between Black Democrats and Republicans, said Katerina Eva Matsa, director of news and information research at Pew.

For example, 46% of Republicans and 44% of Democrats say that news coverage largely stereotyped Black people, Pew said.

Negative attitudes toward the press tended to increase with income and education levels, Matsa said. While 57% of those in lower income levels said news coverage about Black people was more negative than it was about other groups. That number jumped to 75% of wealthier respondents, the study found.

A large majority of those surveyed, young and old, expressed little confidence that things would improve much in their lifetime.

While 40% of survey participants said it was important to see Black journalists report on issues about race and racial inequality, the race of journalists wasn’t that important about general news.

Prince said it’s important for journalists to know history; he wrote on Monday about the idea of a government shutdown was raised in 1879 when former Confederates in Congress wanted to deny money to protect Black people at the polls, and how the filibuster started to prevent civil rights legislation.

At Northwestern, professors are trying to teach students of the importance of having a broader sense of the communities that they’re covering, Whitaker said. Medill is also a hub for solutions journalism, which emphasizes coverage of people trying to solve societal problems.

“We’re trying to get away from parachute journalism,” he said.

Prince said there was notable progress, post-Floyd, in the hiring of Black journalists into leadership roles in the media. Unfortunately, the news industry continues to contract while social media increases in importance, he said.

“We’re integrating an industry that’s shrinking,” he said.

Adrian Newey’s ‘huge regret’ revealed as Sebastian Vettel 2024 talks take place – F1 news round-up

September 27, 2023 by www.planetf1.com Leave a Comment

It has been another busy day in the world of Formula 1, so it is time to bring you up speed with the major talking points.

Red Bull’s design guru Adrian Newey has revealed his “huge regret” from the year Ayrton Senna was tragically killed when at Williams with Newey, while another familiar multi-champion of Newey’s career, Sebastian Vettel, is being eyed-up for a racing return.

Let us then head into the thick of the action…

Adrian Newey “completely messed up” on Williams 1994 suspension

That season in Formula 1 will always be tied to the tragedy of Senna’s death at the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix, while at the wheel of the Newey-designed Williams.

And almost 30 years on from that dark weekend, Newey revealed that while Senna had a “quite extraordinary” control of the FW16, it was an “aerodynamically unstable” challenger as Newey to his mind struggled to master the switch from active back to passive suspension that year.

“The ‘94 cars, one of my huge regrets, regardless of what was the cause of the accident at Imola, the one thing you could definitely say about the car is it was aerodynamically unstable,” Newey admitted on the Beyond the Grid podcast.

“We’d had two years with active suspension and, it’s my fault, I completely messed up the aerodynamics of going back to passive suspension and the much bigger ride height range that that has to cope with.”

Sebastian Vettel heading for racing return?

Vettel recently has left the door open to a future Formula 1 return, but could his more immediate future be in the World Endurance Championship?

Jota team principal Sam Hignett has confirmed the rumours that he is in talks with Vettel over a possible drive.

“We are speaking to Seb, there are discussions, but nothing is done,” he told Motorsport.com . “There isn’t any kind of contract signed and he certainly hasn’t tested one of our cars.”

Nyck de Vries finds new racing home

One ex-Formula 1 racer who has secured a move is De Vries, who having been axed by Red Bull after just 10 rounds of F1 2023 spent with their junior team AlphaTauri, will return to a familiar stomping ground.

De Vries won the Formula E title with Mercedes in 2021, and now he will head back to the series as a Mahindra driver.

“It’s really exciting to be joining such a major automotive manufacturer as Mahindra, and to represent them in Formula E,” De Vries said.

Did Mercedes drivers show “weakness” in Suzuka radio antics?

Team radio was extensively used by both Lewis Hamilton and George Russell during the Japanese Grand Prix in an eventful race for the pair.

After several on-track battles, with Russell’s look on Hamilton at Spoon particularly nerve-wracking for the Mercedes team, Russell was left asking “Who do we want to fight here? Each other or the others?”

Later in the race Russell had to be told twice to concede his position to Hamilton, with ex-Bridgestone engineer Kees van der Grint believing that the radio exchanges were a “sign of weakness” with both drivers asking for help.

“It’s actually a sign of weakness,” Motorsport.com quotes Van der Grint as having told In de Slipstream.

“They are calling on others for help.”

Adidas remain tight-lipped on Red Bull F1 links

Change is afoot at Red Bull’s junior team for F1 2024, with the AlphaTauri branding set to bow out, plus the arrival of new team boss Laurent Mekies and strengthening of ties with the main Red Bull squad.

And after speculation that Hugo Boss could take over title sponsorship of the team, Adidas’ name has since entered the fray, rumours which the brand has failed to quash.

“As a matter of principle, we do not participate in speculation,” an Adidas spokesperson told DPA news agency in response to the chatter.
