ChatGPT can now search for data on internet

September 29, 2023 by economictimes.indiatimes.com Leave a Comment

Synopsis

OpenAI’s generative AI platform, ChatGPT, can now gather real-time information from the internet, including direct links to sources. This is a significant development for the software, which previously relied on a database that only contained information up until August 2021.

The generative AI platform ChatGPT can now fetch data directly from the internet and gather up-to-date information in real-time, its creator OpenAI said Wednesday, in a major milestone for the software.

Until now, ChatGPT’s responses to user queries were based on a vast database, which did not contain information from after August 2021.

“ChatGPT can now browse the internet to provide you with current and authoritative information, complete with direct links to sources,” OpenAI said in a post on X, formerly Twitter.

— OpenAI (@OpenAI)

“It is no longer limited to data before September 2021.”

It also said that the latest feature would allow sites to control how ChatGPT interacts with them.

OpenAI launched the update for its paying subscribers in June, but suspended it after users managed to bypass paywalls on internet content.

ChatGPT, now online

OpenAI on Wednesday announced that ChatGPT can now browse the internet in real time . This empowers the chatbot to provide users with the latest information on everything from current events to sports and entertainment.

— OpenAI (@OpenAI)

Till now, the runaway-hit app was trained on an enormous dataset of text and code, but it could not access the internet. Its knowledge was limited to information that was available up to September 2021. This is no longer the case, as ChatGPT can now scour the web for answers to any prompts the users may send its way.

AI startup said its latest browsing feature would allow websites to control how ChatGPT can interact with them.

It is currently only available to Plus and Enterprise users of the app, but will be accessible to all soon. “Browsing is particularly useful for tasks that require up-to-date information, such as helping you with technical research, trying to choose a bike, or planning a vacation,” OpenAI said in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

Chatty ChatGPT

On Monday, OpenAI released a version of ChatGPT that can interact with people using words, similar to Amazon ’s Alexa, Apple’s Siri and other digital assistants. Users can talk to the app, and it will respond with words. People can choose from five different options, including male and female voices.

The company sees talking as a more natural way of interacting with its chatbot. It argues that ChatGPT’s synthetic voices are more convincing than others used with popular digital assistants.

Though ChatGPT’s voice interface is reminiscent of earlier assistants, the underlying technology is fundamentally different. ChatGPT is driven primarily by a large language model, or LLM, which has learned to generate language on the fly by analysing huge amounts of text culled from across the internet.

Older digital assistants, such as Alexa and Siri, acted like command-and-control centers that could perform a set number of tasks or give answers to a finite list of questions programmed into their databases, such as “Alexa, turn on the lights” or “What’s the weather in Cupertino?” Adding new commands to the older assistants could take weeks. ChatGPT can respond authoritatively to virtually any question thrown at it in seconds — though it is not always correct.

ChatGPT can also see

For the first time, ChatGPT can also respond to images. People can, for example, upload a photo of the inside of their refrigerator, and the chatbot can give them a list of dishes they could cook with the ingredients they have.

Given a photograph, chart or diagram, it can provide a detailed description of the image and answer questions about its contents, a tool useful for the visually impaired.

— OpenAI (@OpenAI)

Sandhini Agarwal, an OpenAI researcher who focuses on safety and policy, said the new version of the bot would now refuse efforts to identify faces. But it is designed to provide enormously detailed descriptions of other photos. Given an image from the Hubble Space Telescope, for example, it can respond with paragraphs detailing the contents in the photo.

Text-to-image tool

OpenAI also released a new version of its DALL-E image generator to a small group of testers and folded the technology into ChatGPT.

— OpenAI (@OpenAI)

Called DALL-E 3, it can produce images from multi-paragraph descriptions and closely follow instructions laid out in minute detail. OpenAI is not sharing DALL-E 3 with the wider public until next month. It will be available through ChatGPT Plus — a service that costs $20 a month — later.

DALL-E 3 can produce more convincing images than its previous versions, showing a particular knack for images containing letters, numbers and human hands, the company said.

‘Brits must prepare for internet apocalypse with impending blackout solar storm’

September 24, 2023 by www.dailystar.co.uk Leave a Comment

Brits are simply unprepared for an “internet apocalypse” which could be caused by an upcoming “solar storm”, an expert has warned.

Investigations into end of world preparation has shone a light on the whole of the UK, with most of the population not ready for a permanent power outage. Those few who are, may find themselves better equipped to deal with a world without internet.

Stern warnings over the activity of the sun and a higher frequency of solar storms, see expert Brandon Young speak out on the chances of an internet outage outrage. Should it happen, preparedness is paramount, he says.

Time is of the essence when getting prepared, but there are “plenty of options” for those preparing themselves for a potential internet outage. Emergency essentials were listed off by the expert, who says there is a link between “solar activity” and internet preparedness.

Speaking to the Daily Star, Payless Power CEO Brandon Young said: “Solar storms are the most searched-for type of internet apocalypse. The sun is becoming more active than it has been in over a decade, significantly increasing the potential for power outages, grounded flights, and stunning auroras.

“The sun is entering a period of peak activity that will last several years. Plenty of options exist for people searching and preparing for the next internet blackout.

“We advise securing emergency lighting, purchasing non-perishable foods, and having a battery-operated radio to make sure emergency alerts and news are accessible during the outage. Similar to any big natural disaster, cities may lose power for weeks or more, and many activities necessary to daily life would be interrupted.”

This increase in activity comes from an “uptick in solar activity” which is “likely driving much of the search volume around an internet apocalypse.”

Some steady preparation for a potential permanent outage may be advised, as expert Young believes the solar storms could “impact society” beyond repair, and the likelihood of a storm is rising.

He added: “Solar storms have the potential to impact society in several ways: power outages, grounded flights, and stunning auroras. Solar storms are largely a result of an increase in the sun’s activity. We are now in such a period. Yet, over 90% of people have taken no preparatory measures to mitigate the impact of an internet apocalypse on their personal or professional lives.”

Another power-up for OpenAI as ChatGPT given full access to Internet

September 28, 2023 by www.thenews.com.pk Leave a Comment

ChatGPT, a generative AI platform, can now acquire data directly from the internet and gather current information in real-time in a significant development for the software, as per its developer OpenAI.

Until now, ChatGPT´s responses to user queries were based on a vast database, which did not contain information from after August 2021.

“ChatGPT can now browse the internet to provide you with current and authoritative information, complete with direct links to sources,” OpenAI said in a post on X, formerly Twitter. “It is no longer limited to data before September 2021.”

It also said that the latest feature would allow sites to control how ChatGPT interacts with them.

OpenAI launched the update for its paying subscribers in June but suspended it after users managed to bypass paywalls on internet content.

The feature, dubbed “Browse with Bing”, is also reserved for paying subscribers of ChatGPT Plus and Enterprise services, but OpenAI said it would soon be available to all users.

OpenAI partner Microsoft already offers Bing Chat, an integration of GPT-4, the language model used to develop ChatGPT, with its internet search engine, as does Google with its conversational robot Bard.

ChatGPT will provide direct sources alongside its responses, which will no longer be based on the single database the program´s publisher controls.

National Trust reveals how 93 of its properties have links to colonialism and slavery

September 22, 2020 by news.sky.com Leave a Comment

The National Trust has revealed how 93 of the properties it looks after have links to historic colonialism and slavery.

The connections are highlighted in a report which was commissioned by the heritage and conservation charity last September.

The report was part of efforts to tell the history of colonialism and slavery at its historic places.

It details links to plantation owners and those who were paid compensation for enslaved people freed through abolition, as well as those who gained their wealth through the slave trade.

Properties with connections to people involved in colonial expansion, including leading figures in the East India Company, or senior figures in administering colonies, including Winston Churchill’s home Chartwell, are included in the survey.

And those with important cultural links to Britain’s colonial history, such as writer Rudyard Kipling’s home in Sussex, Bateman’s, or the home of historian Thomas Carlyle in London are also highlighted.

The National Trust report shows how estates and stately homes such as Clandon Park, Surrey, and Hare Hall in Cheshire, were linked to wealth from plantations or the slave trade.

Some 29 properties cared for by the National Trust have links to successful compensation claims as a result of the abolition of slavery, such as Glastonbury Tor in Somerset, and Blickling Hall, Norfolk, the report shows.

Quarry Bank Mill, in Cheshire, was built using family wealth related to slavery, while Bath Assembly Rooms was connected to the wider colonial and slavery economies of the 18th century, it highlights.

The sinister history of slave trade behind Liverpool’s magnificent monuments

Powis Castle in Wales, with its links to Clive of India, and Cragside, Northumberland, which was home to Sir William Armstrong who supplied guns to British military forces, are among those with imperial links.

The survey also documents those National Trust properties belonging to people who were involved in the abolition movement or the fight against colonial oppression.

And it highlights the presence of African, Asian and Chinese people working on English and Welsh estates.

The report draws on the Trust’s own archives and external evidence such as the Legacies of British Slave-ownership project run by University College London.

Dr Tarnya Cooper, the National Trust’s curatorial and collections director said: “The buildings in the care of the National Trust reflect many different periods and a range of British and global histories – social, industrial, political and cultural.

“A significant number of those in our care have links to the colonisation of different parts of the world, and some to historic slavery.

“Colonialism and slavery were central to the national economy from the 17th to the 19th centuries.”

And she said it was the National Trust’s job, as a heritage charity, to research, interpret and openly share full and up-to-date information about its properties.

Dr Cooper said: “This report is the fullest account to date of the links between places now in the care of the National Trust and colonialism and historic slavery.”

She added it was not exhaustive and would be added to as more research was done.

The research has been used to update online information and will be used to help the Trust review visitor information and displays at properties.
