NBA: LeBron James opted against foot surgery to pursue Lakers’ playoff push

Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James returned from a four-week injury absence on Sunday, revealing after the team’s NBA loss to Chicago he had torn a tendon in his right foot.

James scored 19 points off the bench — just his second game as a reserve in his 20-year NBA career — but the Lakers fell to an energized Bulls team 118-108.

The 38-year-old star, who last month became the NBA’s all-time leading scorer, revealed the severity of the injury in post-game comments to reporters, saying two doctors had recommended surgery.

James said he decided against that after consulting “the LeBron James of feet, and he told me I shouldn’t.”

James said doctors monitoring his progress told him he was healing faster than anyone they’d seen with a similar injury.

He was suddenly upgraded from “out” to “doubtful” on the Lakers’ injury report on Saturday night and opted to take the court after testing his foot in pre-game warm-ups.

Now, he said, he’ll see how his foot responds after he played 27 and a half minutes.

“It’s day to day,” James said. “Most important for me is Monday morning. When I wake up tomorrow and step out of bed we’ll see what happens with that.”

With seven games left in the regular season, the Lakers are in ninth place in the Western Conference — with the seventh- through 10th-placed teams set to battle in the play-in tournament for a berth in the playoffs proper.

They are just two games behind the sixth-placed Golden State Warriors.

The Lakers had gone 8-5 in James’s absence, putting together a three-game winning streak capped by a victory over Oklahoma City on Friday that put them at .500 for the first time this season.

That streak ended on Sunday, but Lakers coach Darvin Ham was pleased to see his biggest star back on the floor.

“You could see him get in his rhythm, his timing, his finishes,” Ham said. “He’s going to be all right. We’re going to be all right. It was great to see him back out there.”

Ham said the Lakers left a decision on when to return up to James.

“Today just happened to be the day,” Ham said.

James had said Thursday he was working “around the clock” to regain full fitness but rejected reports he had set a target date to return before the end of the regular season.

On Sunday he said the decision came down to “when I felt comfortable I’d be able to explode and jump and run.”

Enhanced mindset

James said watching his teammates battle during his absence had inspired him to work hard to get back on the floor.

“They go 8-5 and obviously had a chance to — the hell with the play-in, we actually can be a top-eight seed,” James said.

“It definitely changed my mindset on me coming back and trying to be a part of this. Well, I don’t even want to say changed my mindset. It just enhanced what I was trying to do as far as my workouts, as far as my treatment and everything.”

James has missed 27 games this season due to various injuries, matching the most of any campaign in his career.

On February 26 he went down hard in a game against Dallas, clutching his right ankle and heel and saying he’d felt something “pop.”

When healthy this season he’s been in solid form, averaging 29.3 points per game, 8.4 rebounds and 6.9 assists.

Tested-Driving The 2023 Toyota Sequoia: Meet The New Boss

March 27, 2023 by www.forbes.com Leave a Comment

The all-new for 2023 Sequoia is everything the outgoing model wasn’t, and that’s a great thing. It’s smart-looking instead of bland, its interior is interesting and intuitive as opposed to the outgoing model’s slightly bargain flavor, and its basic conservatism has been jettisoned in favor of a more mod flavor overall.

All Sequoias are now hybrids, too, meaning you’ll get 17 MPG combined city/highway as opposed to the 14 MPG one used to achieve. It’s a small improvement which adds up over time. Other trims in the lineup will offer you mileage in the very low 20s. It is, after all, a full-size SUV weighing upwards of 5,600 pounds. It seats up to eight passengers.

Body

I had the TRD Pro trim, meaning my outside was mighty-mighty with a TRD PRO hood badge, gloss-black window molding, black technical camo grained overfenders with marker lights and other distinguishing features. I got lots of thumbs-up on the highway and in parking lots.

I also had Dumbo-ears mirrors that, many times, actually got in the way of seeing what was around the vehicle and prevented me from going up or down my driveway without retracting them. They sure look good, though, and they’re heated, with turn signal and blind spot warning indicators and power-folding and reverse tilt-down features. Also included are TRD Pro all-weather floor mats, aluminum sport pedals, front and rear assist grips, an electronic locking fuel door, front and rear LED maplights, 120V/400W rear-seat and cargo area AC power outlets, Front 12V auxiliary power outlet, rear-seat air vents and more.

The TRD package brought the total price of my tester, whose base price is $76,000, to an even heftier $80,291.

Inside

There’s a generous 14-inch touchscreen with all the latest software, a furnace of a heater including heated/cooled front seats and a heated steering wheel, and a mediocre sound system.

The second row chairs are nice and wide for the nice and wide among us, and each seat is super-comfy. A center storage bin is surprisingly small, especially when compared with some elephantine vehicles of this sort. The third row seats fold down automatically, meaning you can toss a bicycle back there and close the door without having to fuss with racks if you don’t feel like it.

Engine/performance

Toyota has kept the 10-speed automatic transmission from the outgoing model, and it’s nice and smooth. Rear-wheel drive is standard, with four-wheel drive optional on most versions, and standard on the TRD Pro model, my tester.

I did not have the opportunity for true off-roading, but was well-prepared with a locking rear differential, 2.5-inch Fox internal-bypass shocks with remote reservoirs on the rears, trail cameras, a TRD front anti-roll bar, crawl control, Multi-Terrain Select traction modes, TRD-badged components inside, a quarter-inch-thick aluminum front skidplate, and 18-inch TRD wheels with 33-inch Falken Wildpeak all-terrain tires.

During one midnight ride home, covering a distance of about 45 miles, I was smacked with one of the most ferocious blizzards I’ve ever encountered in my life, with the snow and wind blowing sideways and visibility about 15 feet. I drove with flashers on at about 20 MPH like everyone else on the highway the whole way home and had visions of going off-road – but not on purpose. It was great to have this particular vehicle to meet extreme weather with.

The acceleration, when it wasn’t a disaster weather-wise, was sweetly responsive, as are the brakes. Some have complained about a rough ride, but I didn’t find this to be true to the point where it was something to complain about, especially with the Fox shock absorbers my tester came with. It was pretty noisy in the cabin at speed, however.

Safety

The Toyota Safety Sense™ 2.5 (TSS 2.5) pack delivers a Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection (PCS w/PD), ] Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC), Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist (LDA w/SA), Lane Tracing Assist (LTA), Automatic High Beams (AHB), Road Sign Assist (RSA) and more. The Insurance Institute For Highway Safety does not list crash results for the Sequoia.

Conclusion: the redesigned Sequoia kicks the old Sequoia, which was not a bad vehicle but ever-so-dull, to the curb, and it’s a pleasure to recommend it.

SFERRA Is Unveiling Its First Physical Store, In An Italiante-Style Townhouse In New York City

March 27, 2023 by www.forbes.com Leave a Comment

Luxury Italian bedding and lifestyle brand SFERRA is opening a 2,600-square-foot store, its first physical store, in Manhattan’s Flatiron District, in a three level Italiante-style townhouse. While the brand is long on history – it was founded in 1853 – it’s store is designed to be an experiential retail center.

With three-floors to explore, the Townhouse gathers all of SFERRA’s product lines under the same roof. That includes bedding, bath, down, robe, and loungewear; tabletop; rugs; decorative accessories, and gift collections. The latter features one-of-a-kind items sold exclusively at the Flatiron District Townhouse.

The store showcases SFERRA’s collections in an elevated space that echos a comfortable New York City home. Displays of SFERRA products from the early days, and spanning 130 years are showcased throughout the Townhouse alongside recently launched items.

The merchandise will allow guests and designers to immerse themselves in the world of SFERRA and imagine how the products will look in their own homes. The Townhouse has a dedicated design studio where designers can host clients or interact with SFERRA staff to source items and place orders.

“There’s going to be a workspace for interior designers in the Townhouse,” a spokeswoman for SFERRA said. “If a designer wants to bring in paint samples or a mood board, they’re encouraged to make it a work space, and make it as practical as possible.”

“New York City has played an important role in SFERRA’s illustrious 130 year history,” said Michelle Klein, SFERRA’s president and CEO. “It was in New York City that our founders, the Sferra brothers , decided to settle when they arrived from Italy at the turn of the last century, making it the perfect location for our first flagship.

“We’re extremely proud to bring this story full circle with the opening of the SFERRA Townhouse, a beautifully-designed space showcasing our vast range of offerings for the home, including exclusive limited-edition pieces only available at the Townhouse. This retail location is a real nod to SFERRA’s past.”

SFERRA isn’t the first home lifestyle brand to conjure up a store as a home concept. Restoration Hardware even went so far as to open RH Guesthouse on Gansevoort Street in the Meatpacking District, and it opened The Gallery on nearby Ninth Avenue, which features five floors of rooms filled with RH’s oversized furniture and a restaurant on the roof.

RH has a lot more name recognition than SFERRA, so it remains to be seen whether the Italian brand can make a splash in Manhattan.

“I don’t know about you, but I want to touch and feel things that touch my skin whether it’s towels or sheets,” the spokeswoman said. “Honestly, that’s one of the reasons they made the decision to open up a physical brick-and-mortar store.”

SFERRA for many years has been sold at Neiman Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue, and will continue to be available at those stores. “To have their own space where you can come in and say, ‘Okay, I like to sleep and be very warm,’ or ‘I get really hot when I sleep so I want to make sure I have something that’s cool.’ You can have a one-on-one conversation with someone who can guide you,” she added.

Studio Monteleone & Associates designed the Townhouse with SFERRA. The design company also created the brand’s in-store shop at Harrods in London.

“It was important to reach the right balance for the expression of SFERRA while celebrating the historical significance of the of the existing architecture of the townhouse,” said Lisa Monteleone, founder of SM&A. “The design and materials are a canvas to exhibit the products that furnish the SFERRA lifestyle with an evenness between the historical space and what our clients consider home today.”

SFERRA was established in New York 130 years ago by Gennaro Sferra and his brother, TK , with a focus on luxury textiles manufactured in three century-old family-owned textile mills nestled in the Alpine foothills of Northern Italy. SFERRA has been at the forefront of luxury bed-making and introduced the first 1,020 thread count sheets in TK , which were two years in development.

“Over the last couple of years, what SFERRA has seen is the whole idea of styling your bed and your bathroom,” said the spokeswoman. “How many times have you walked into someone’s house and there’s a million pillows on the beds and fluffy towels in the bathrooms. This will show the breadth of their full collection.

The spokeswoman added: “The Townhouse is so comfortable. That’s why they’ll be serving beautiful Italian coffee so people don’t fall asleep.”

Great Northern Hotel Review

Great Northern Hotel first opened in 1854, and though it has experienced several iterations over the years, continues to welcome guests through its doors. Housed in a Grade-II listed building, the hotel provides a luxurious solace from the commotion of one of the capital’s busiest transport hubs.

And though it was refurbished in 2013, the building maintains the same timeless townhouse elegance as when it was first built, with a grand wrought-iron staircase, stunning stainless windows and wide, curving corridors.

Classic features are juxtaposed by impressive modern artwork, particularly on the staircase leading to the newly transformed RAILS restaurant and Little Bar, formerly Plum + Spilt Milk.

An impressive installation by artist Debbie Smyth, constructed from shining pins and connecting string, takes inspiration from the architecture of the adjoining Kings Cross station, cartography of London and Europe and the hotel’s time-honoured interior. Passing through the guest areas of the hotel, keep an eye out for the framed Penguin paperback books and 7″ singles.

The lower level of the hotel is buzzing with life, thanks to the adjoining GNH bar and terrace, which draws inspiration from the seminal railway bars of the 19th century. But once checked in and shown to our room, we were taken aback by just how peaceful the upper levels are.

Concierge staff guide guests to a private lift which ascends to one of four floors where the 88 en-suite rooms are located. Security is a top priority at the hotel, and only those holding a room key are able to pass through the doors to guest corridors.

The Rooms

How does Great Northern Hotel compare to other London hotels?

Rating: 3/5

Each of the hotel’s 88 bedrooms is carefully designed to include modern features while still celebrating the heritage of the hotel.

There are four room types to choose from, including the ‘Couchette’ which pays homage to the classic continental sleeper; the ‘Edwardian’ featuring rich walnut panelling reminiscent of the most opulent age-old railways carriages; the ‘Victorian’, the largest room the hotel has to offer (complete with standalone bath) and the ‘Heritage’, where we spent our stay.

Painted in a muted green, the room features white panelling and a decadent mirror above the European king-size bed by Hypnos, the same family-run company which has been supplying the Royal Family since 1929. Tall sash windows flood the room with daylight and offer beautiful views over Kings Cross Station, while a cosy leather corner seat offers somewhere to sit and watch the world go by.

Double doors, a nod to classic design features, gives way to a spacious bathroom featuring a shower and complimentary toiletries (though there is a fee to take them out of the room, should the aroma of the nettle and fig leaf hand soap take your fancy).

The room also comes kitted out with dressing gowns and slippers for guests, as well as complimentary soft drinks, bottled water and a Nespresso machine.

If you do begin to feel a little peckish, a quaint ‘pantry’ is located at the end of each corridor, offering quintessential British treats as well as tea- and coffee-making facilities.

RAILS restaurant and Little Bar are the newest additions to the Great Northern Hotel, opening to guests in November 2022. Much like the hotel, RAILS takes inspiration from both contemporary and classic design, with vast floor-to-ceiling windows brightening up the room. Rich, dark wood and delicate olive-toned curtains pay homage to the Parisian cafés within reach from Eurostar’s St Pancras dwelling, while hand-blown pendant lights add a golden glow to the space once dusk arrives. An eye-catching, curving seating area makes up the centre of the restaurant, with tables and window booths filling the surrounding area. Meanwhile, foliage and pastel floral arrangements add a touch of femininity.

RAILS is open for dinner service, with “must-try mains” from Executive Chef Stéphane Cerisier including seared Cornish cod with buttered leek, apple and thyme dressing and Moules Frites in a white wine, shallot and parsley sauce. However, on this occasion, we visited the restaurant for an elegant afternoon tea overlooking Kings Cross Station.

From the moment of arrival, staff are universally friendly and knowledgeable, taking the time to talk through each of the delicacies on offer. If you want to kick off your afternoon tea with a little sparkle, there is the option of adding a glass of Nyetimber Sparkling Wine or Perrier Jouet Champagne to the experience. And naturally, the menu has a vast selection of teas to choose from.

GNH bar at Great Northern Hotel

GNH bar is a buzzing spot located on the ground floor (Image: Great Northern Hotel)

Expect to be wowed when the tiered tea stand arrives, decorated with perfectly oblong sandwiches, golden scones and ornate, handmade cakes. An added bonus, and one which is often rare to find in the English tradition, is that the restaurant offers a vegetarian afternoon tea option. As well as sandwiches, including an age-old favourite cheddar and tomato, the savoury option also featured a beautifully bitesize wild mushroom tartlet.

The cakes, though almost too stunning to eat, taste just as good as they look. The Victoria Sponge slice is a chic take on a classic, decorated with a slither of strawberry and an edible, lilac petal. The mango and passionfruit cheesecake, presented as a glistening yellow orb, is another showstopper.

There is also the option to visit RAILS for breakfast, which can be enjoyed as part of a bed and breakfast package. There are plenty of traditional options to choose from, including vegetarian and vegan options, and room to customise your dishes with extras.

Adjacent to Rails is the Little Bar, a cosy and inviting spot serving up creative cocktails and an extensive choice of wines, half of which are French, as well as aperitifs, digestifs and liqueurs.

The first floor also features the tranquil ‘resident lounge’, a private offshoot of the restaurant and bar with open marble fireplaces almost begging you to sit down and relax. However, if you’re looking for a more lively environment, the GNH bar and terrace is open until 11pm, providing a drinking and dining hotspot for travellers, tourists and hotel guests alike. The bar also hosts a jazz and negroni night on the last Tuesday of every month.

One of the most surprising aspects of a stay at the Great Northern Hotel is that, despite its central location in one of the capital’s busiest transport hubs, peace and quiet is waiting from the moment you set foot through its doors.

That makes it the perfect location for a restful night’s sleep before an early train but equally, thanks to its prime location, the hotel as serves as a well-connected hub for those looking to explore the capital.

If you’re just staying for one night, there’s more than enough to keep you occupied in the hotel itself thanks to its restaurant and bar offering, but if you do want to venture out for dinner and drinks there is plenty in the surrounding area to choose from with the thriving Coal Drops Yard just minutes away.

Timeless design places sophistication at the heart of this hotel, but while it doesn’t have any particularly family-focused amenities, children are welcome with baby cots available to guests staying in Heritage or Victorian rooms.

Pan Pacific London Review

Overlooking some of the capital’s most renowned landmarks is Pan Pacific London, a luxury hotel chain with rich Singaporean roots. The London location, first opened in September 2021, places modern opulence perfectly between bustling Liverpool Street Station and the hip streets of Shoreditch.

Expect a five-star experience from the moment of arrival, with even the smallest of details accounted for. The hotel’s sleek, contemporary interior design was headed up by design firm Yabu Pushelberg, with plenty of soft, neutral shades and rooms flooded with mood-boosting natural light. Nature also plays a crucial role in the decor of the hotel, with natural wood finishes and pops of green foliage everywhere from the lobby to the bathrooms.

Expect to be greeted by warm, attentive staff who will almost feel like old friends. They’ll be there the moment you step foot into the vast lobby, on hand to carry bags, ask about your plans and even offer a square of shortbread as a welcome treat.

And if you happen to arrive a little before your check-in time, Pan Pacific sets itself apart from other hotels by safely storing guest luggage and allowing them to pass the time in the fourth-floor Drawing Room. Located just off the spa, the Drawing Room is space to sit and enjoy a complimentary beverage, or even take a nap in one of its dedicated relaxation pods. Once your room is ready, someone will be there to collect you and show you to your room where your luggage will be waiting.

Deluxe City View Room at Pan Pacific

The Deluxe City View Room at Pan Pacific London promises stunning views of the capital (Image: Pan Pacific London)

The Rooms

Rating: 5/5

Pan Pacific is home to 237 guest rooms spread between floors six and 19, while the 20th floor is reserved for the private Sky Residence apartments. Guest security and privacy is paramount, and floors housing rooms can only be accessed with a room key.

There are family-friendly, accessible and dog-friendly rooms to choose from, with every single one categorised as a “deluxe room”.

For our stay, we were treated to breathtaking vistas of St Paul’s Cathedral and the nearby Ivy from the opulent Deluxe City View Room, spanning a spacious 398 square feet. Like the wider hotel, the room maintains a neutral palette with natural wood fittings along with a finely painted floral motif feature headboard.

Attention to detail is one of Pan Pacific’s greatest successes, with the smallest things taken care of before you even think to need them. A little seat is located in the entryway, so you have somewhere to take off your shoes before making yourself at home.

The wardrobe door triggers a light so you can easily find everything you need. Mood lighting in the bathroom means your eyes need not adjust to harsh brightness in the middle of the night while energy-saving light bulbs and motion sensors help the hotel maintain its commitment to ethical sustainability.

Expect to be greeted by warm, attentive staff who will almost feel like old friends

A vast king-sized bed is room enough for two without feeling as though you are sharing a bed, and 300-thread count cotton linen makes for a restful night’s slumber. The peace and quiet is topped off by the fact that each one of the hotel’s rooms has been designed with soundproofing in mind.

Carefully chosen furniture items, including a chaise lounge to gaze out of the window and the metropolitan view, a 55” LCD Smart Television with built-in Chromecast and a huge mirror create a residential feel to the room.

Just off from the main entry, a sliding door gives way to a vast bathroom boasting floor-to-ceiling Italian marble features with the inky black sink serving as a focal point.

All toiletries are provided by high-end French fragrance brand Diptyque, and in keeping with the hotel’s holistic theme, a vase of bamboo cuttings sits atop the vanity.

There is a spacious waterfall shower and a toilet privately tucked behind a frosted glass door. Guests also have use of comfortable branded bathrobes, slippers, a Dyson hairdryer and other hair tools available upon request.

Amenities such as 24-hour room service, turndown service and complimentary access to the hotel’s Wellbeing Floor further add to the elevated status of this sumptuous bolthole.

Pan Pacific’s Wellbeing Floor takes a holistic approach to wellness, with a personalised array of treatments, 24-hour gym, sauna and steam room facilities and a stunning 18.5m infinity-edged indoor pool overlooking the bustling neighbourhood.

While the pool is long enough to swim lengths, it’s also heated to a temperature comfortable enough to simply float around and enjoy the views.

Wellbeing staff are on hand to talk you through the amenities on offer or come up with a personalised treatment to suit your needs.

The gym is a playground for fitness enthusiasts, with guests able to make use of the TecnoBody D-Wall exclusive to the hotel, which gives biometric feedback to enhance your workout.

The wellness space also offers family-friendly services, with dedicated children’s swim hours and a family treatment experience.

Strait’s Kitchen, located on the first floor of the hotel, is a modern South East Asian restaurant which combines the flavours of the continent with locally sourced ingredients. Carefully crafted by head chef Nick Yung, the menu offers a selection of small, sharing and large plates, including options for vegetarians and vegans.

The Vegetable Crispy Golden Cup is a delicious sharing plate of bitesize crispy parcels, while the Vegetarian Mee Goreng is a perfectly spiced noodle-based main course not to be missed.

The showstopper of the meal, however, is perhaps the dessert menu. The “Apple”, an intricately crafted dish of apple compote, caramel sponge and cinnamon crumble is almost too pretty to eat. The restaurant also has a far-reaching wine list and an exclusive list of cocktails and mocktails courtesy of the adjoining Straits Bar.

Come morning, the space is transformed into a breakfast restaurant with a guest-only continental and hot offering with several Asian-inspired options, including dumplings and even a breakfast curry.

Eggs are cooked in any style on the spot, including a unique scramble made in a circular motion. On Sundays, Strait’s combines British traditions with its home roots to carve up an Asian-inspired Sunday roast.

Traditional English and Singaporean Afternoon Tea is available in The Orchid Lounge, set around a cosy fireplace with views across the plaza, while lively cocktail bar Ginger Lily is a ritzy spot for an after-work drink or a nightcap.

Independent cocktail bar Silverleaf is also located within Pan Pacific’s estate, offering incredible views over Bishopsgate to enjoy with a drink in hand.

Just a stone’s throw from Liverpool Street Station, with city-wide and national rail links, the hotel is the perfect hub for those connecting to another destination or gearing up to explore the streets of London.

For business travellers, the Gherkin is a five-minute walk away and Heron Tower is conveniently right next door.

For tourists, Brick Lane is right around the corner boasting a hub of quirky eateries, vintage shops and urban artwork. Whitechapel Gallery is less than 15 minutes away on foot and St Paul’s Cathedral can be reached in just under 20 minutes.

Though the hotel itself has plenty of dining and drinking options, there are also plenty of independent and notable restaurants in the vicinity, including Duck and Waffle, SUSHISAMBA, Eataly and The Ivy City Garden.

Pan Pacific promises a five-star experience for every single guest and although prices are by no means budget when compared with the likes of Shangri-La The Shard where the average room price is roughly £747 per night, value for money is notably more favourable.

Attention to detail is one of the hotel’s standout features, whether that’s the staff who make an effort to remember your name and details of your stay or the small things like a vase of flowers on the bedside table.

The Wellbeing floor, with its stunning infinity pool – a rare find in a central London hotel – goes a huge way towards making Pan Pacific London a showstopper and helps it stand out from the crowd of other hotels popping up across the city.

Top-quality service and amenities mean there really is no reason to leave the hotel, but its fantastic location promise that when you do, everything from fine dining to world-famous landmarks is practically on your doorstep.
