Mobile malware up in Viet Nam

Along with a surge in the number of mobile phone users accessing the Internet, there has been an increase in the number of mobile malware targeting Vietnamese users, according to the global cybersecurity company Kaspersky.

According to the Digital 2022 report conducted by We Are Social, the number of mobile phone users accessing the Internet grew by 147 per cent year-on-year last year.

Kaspersky, meanwhile, reported that it detected and prevented a total of 43,171 mobile attacks targeting Vietnamese users last year, 46.9 per cent higher than in 2020. Trojan is the most common threat in Viet Nam.

While Viet Nam and Thailand saw growth in the number of malware attacks, the rest of Southeast Asia observed a downward trend in the number of attacks on mobile users thanks in part to Kaspersky’s efforts to block more than 2,000 mobile malware per day.

Specifically, Indonesia decreased by 0.9 per cent, Malaysia decreased by 30.59 per cent, the Philippines decreased by 38.85 per cent, Singapore decreased by 15.85 per cent, and Thailand increased by 130.71 per cent.

Indonesia was the country with the highest number of mobile malwares with 375,547 attacks discovered. This is also the third year it has been ranked first in Southeast Asia since 2019.

Malware, short for malicious software, is a file or code, typically delivered over a network, that infects, explores, steals or conducts virtually any behaviour an attacker wants.

Research from Kaspersky also shows that, although mobile malware decreased globally in 2021, it is becoming more sophisticated in terms of both malware functionality and vectors.

Additionally, in terms of mobile banking malware, Viet Nam ranked first with 697 attacks detected, 131 cases more than in 2020.

Indonesia and the Philippines also saw the growth of mobile banking malware. Thailand, however, had an impressive reduction, with 255 cases in 2020 dropping to 28 cases in 2021, a 89 per cent fall.

This could be a positive signal, but users should not act carelessly.

According to another research from Kaspersky, costs incurred due to a data breach in 2021 increased to an average of US$105,000 for small and medium businesses.

Yeo Siang Tiong, general manager for Southeast Asia at Kaspersky, said, “The future is definitely mobile here in Southeast Asia. On the surface, it may seem that cybercriminals are becoming less active because of the decrease in mobile malware attacks. But, this is a global trend and it does not necessarily mean we are safer.

“We have to note that as we embrace digital payment apps more, we unconsciously put more of our hard-earned money in our devices, which remain vulnerable to simple malware attacks. There is a gap between awareness and action here in SEA so I urge digital payment providers and regulators to help us in encouraging users to protect their mobile devices,” Yeo added.

In order to prevent being attacked by mobile malware, Kaspersky recommends users download apps only from official sources, use apps from trusted developers with a good reputation to minimize the chances of encountering malware, ignore apps that promise overly generous prizes, don’t give apps access they don’t need to work, and use a reliable mobile antivirus that will detect and block malware that tries to get inside the phone. — VNS

VN, Hungary’s parliaments sign new cooperation agreement

BUDAPEST — A new cooperation agreement between Việt Nam and Hungary’s national assemblies was assigned by National Assembly (NA) Chairman Vương Đình Huệ and his Hungarian counterpart László Kövér in Budapest on Monday.

The document was signed after the two officials spoke at the Hungarian Parliament building, which was part of Huệ’s official visit to the country.

The agreement was based on the comprehensive partnership between the two countries, and the cooperation agreement signed between the two national assemblies in 2008.

It aims to strengthen the partnership and multifaceted cooperation between Việt Nam and Hungary based on the principles of equality, mutual benefit, mutual respect, compliance with each country’s laws, and adherence to international treaties.

With the new agreement, the two national assemblies will increase the exchange of delegations at the leadership and agency level, as well as between the NA’s Secretary-Generals, offices, and other friendly parliamentarian exchange activities.

The two sides will implement a mechanism to regularly exchange information on legislative activities, and on bilateral and multilateral international treaties to which both countries are party.

They will also conduct more meetings, consultations, and provide more coordination and mutual support to each other at multilateral parliamentary forums.

Prior to the signing ceremony, Huệ and Kövér discussed measures to improve cooperation between Việt Nam and Hungary.

Speaker of the Hungarian National Assembly László Kövér expressed his delight at Huệ’s visit, stressing that it is not only important to the two parliaments but also to the countries’ cooperation in economy, trade, investment, science and technology.

It will help these areas to continue to grow in a more balanced direction, he added. Especially as in the field of import and export, Hungary’s export turnover is currently relatively lower than Việt Nam, which requires Hungary to try harder to create an economic and trade balance between the two countries, he said.

Kövér thanked the National Assembly of Việt Nam for supporting the Hungarian National Assembly during the COVID-19 pandemic, and expressed his hope that as the world is establishing a new normal state after the pandemic, tourism cooperation between the two countries will continue to grow.

The two NA chairs also exchanged views on international issues of mutual concern and considered cooperation possibilities at international organisations and forums.

Huệ expressed his joy to visit Hungary for the first time as the Chairman of Việt Nam’s National Assembly. Although the two countries are geographically far apart, they have enjoyed a long-standing traditional friendship, and celebrated the 70th anniversary of their diplomatic relations in 2020, he said.

At a press briefing that followed the talks, Huệ emphasised that his visit aims to continue promoting and improving the scale, scope and effectiveness of the Việt Nam – Hungary comprehensive partnership.

“We had a very successful conversation, discussing not only the relationship between the two parliaments but also directions and measures to promote the development of the comprehensive partnership between the countries in the future,” he said.

“Apart from promoting and improving political and diplomatic relations, we highly agreed that the two national assemblies will continue to promote government and parliament cooperation in the fields of economy, trade, investment, education and training, labour, science and technology, as well as other areas that Việt Nam and Hungary still have a lot of potential and room to develop cooperation.”

Regarding the new cooperation agreement, Huệ said it will be a pillar in the comprehensive partnership between the two countries. — VNS

Bodybuilder Mách aims to muscle his way to Asian gold

HÀ NỘI — SEA Games champion Phạm Văn Mách is targetting a gold medal in his return to the 54th Asian Bodybuilding and Physique Sports Championship next month in the Maldives.

Mách is one of the best bodybuilders in Việt Nam, competing in the men’s 55kg category and having won several national championships. The An Giang Province-born athlete grabbed five world championship gold medals in 2001, 2009, 2010, 2014 and 2017.

He also triumphed in the continental competition eight times, taking seven titles in a row from 2004 to 2012, and another in 2014.

At last month’s SEA Games 31, the 46-year-old athlete overcame all other rivals to secure his second Games gold.

The title was a strong push for him to train hard in preparing for the Asian event on July 15-21. A total of 51 events will be organised in the first three days before the Annual Congress from July 17.

“Despite my age, I am still in good condition for competition,” Mách said.

“I was first called to the national team in 1998 and since then I have been working hard and updating the latest world information on training and nutrition diet for bodybuilders. These practises help me to keep my fitness and muscles as well as when I was young.”

Mách said, unlike other sports, bodybuilding requires a special regime of eating and drinking habits, which is responsible for up to 70 per cent of changes in body and mass.

“I am also in a comfortable and peaceful state of mind and I’m excited to take part in competitions,” he said.

He explained that to win high points from judges, builders must show their muscle size and conditioning, body form and their performance in a routine to music.

Apart from Mách, other in-form athletes such as Đinh Kim Loan and Trần Hoàng Duy Thuận, who also won titles in recent SEA Games, will also compete in the Maldives.

At the upcoming championship, coach Nguyễn Văn Hải does not set any goals for the team because there will be many powerful athletes at the event, the first in three years. He expects there to be a high level of competitiveness.

However, Mách has set a personal goal of gold for himself, which he said he always wants to achieve.

“I’d love to be on the top podium and listen to the national anthem, an amazing moment that always lifts my national pride,” he said. VNS
