Friday evening news briefing: Tesco chairman quits after harassment allegations

May 19, 2023 by www.telegraph.co.uk Leave a Comment

Good evening. The chairman of Tesco is to step down next month in the wake of a series of harassment allegations.

Meanwhile, an article that Prince Harry has alleged was obtained unlawfully had been published in a newspaper the previous day, the High Court has heard.

Tesco chairman quits after harassment allegations

John Allan is to step down next month after the supermarket said allegations over his behaviour risked becoming a “distraction” .

Mr Allan, who had been due to leave as chairman next year, will now quit at Tesco’s annual general meeting in June.

The decision follows several allegations in recent weeks over his behaviour , which representatives for the City grandee described as “simply untrue”.

In claims made in the Guardian, the Tesco chairman was accused of inappropriate behaviour on four separate occasions .

This included one incident in which he was alleged to have touched the bottom of a senior Tesco employee.

He was also accused of making inappropriate remarks to two other women on separate occasions between 2019 and 2022, and touching another woman’s bottom.

He denied all but one of the allegations, only admitting to having made comments about a worker’s appearance in 2019, which he apologised for.

Angry motorist throws Just Stop Oil protester to the ground

An eco-protester was thrown to the ground during a physical confrontation in London with a furious member of the public.

Around 18 environmental activists were marching near the Tower of London on Friday morning when they became involved in an altercation with a man, reported to be a motorist.

Video captured from a nearby building shows the man pushing several activists, one of whom fell to the ground, in an attempt to remove them from a bus lane where demonstrators were marching slowly.

Just Stop Oil insisted it understood how frustrating it can be to be disrupted, but warned it was nothing compared to the impact of new licences for oil, gas and coal projects.

Prince Harry story in Mirror ‘taken from rival paper and not phone-hacked’

A tabloid newspaper article that the Duke of Sussex has alleged was obtained unlawfully had been published in a Sunday newspaper the previous day, the High Court has heard.

The 107-word story, which was published in the Daily Mirror in November 2004, identified Chelsy Davy as the “pretty blonde” with whom he had been on holiday in Argentina.

Prince Harry has claimed that the information came from phone hacking , blagging or another form of unlawful information gathering.

But Anthony Harwood, a former executive news editor who wrote the story, told the court that the Mail on Sunday had identified Ms Davy the previous day.

Traitors ‘spin-off’ faces axe after ‘mistakes were made during filming’

June 8, 2023 by www.express.co.uk Leave a Comment

Gogglebox stars disgusted by Rise and Fall task

Channel 4 series Rise and Fall, which comes from the minds behind BBC One’s hit game show The Traitors, may not return for a second season, despite its huge popularity.

Airing earlier this year and hosted by DJ Greg James, the show saw players have the chance to have everything and nothing with plenty of drama and betrayals to ensure they rose to the top.

In the end, it was Eddy Fulford from Devon who was crowned the winner, beating Matt, Moses, Ramona and Sydney in the Red Room.

But it may already be time to say goodbye to Rise and Fall after just one season.

According to Deadline, Channel 4 could be ready to get rid of the reality series due to the cost of making it.

Channel 4’s Ian Kaz was reportedly said to be “50/50 about whether Rise and Fall would be renewed soon after it trans mitted”.

The insider continued: “But there is a growing sense that it will be difficult for the show to return given it was expensive to produce and fell well short of The Traitors”.

It was also said that “mistakes were made during filming” as it was a fast turnaround production to get the show on air.

But its future has not yet been set in stone as an official decision is yet to be made.

Express.co.uk has contacted Channel 4 for comment.

When contacted by The Sun Online, a Channel 4 spokesperson stated: “It would be untrue to suggest the series has been axed.”

Rise and Fall came just a few months after the success of The Traitors on BBC One which was made by the same creators.

The Traitors had a similar concept in the fact there was plenty of deception and drama to keep fans hooked.

This time though, it was up to the contestants to figure out who the Traitors, as picked by presenter Claudia Winkleman, were and wheedle them out so they wouldn’t take the cash prize for themselves.

Abandoned former Premier League club’s stadium is now site of 130 houses after team moves to England’s lucky arena

June 8, 2023 by www.thesun.co.uk Leave a Comment

SUNDERLAND’S old Roker Park stadium is now the site of 130 houses – 26 years after it was demolished.

The Black Cats played at the ground for 99 years, with the final season being Sunderland ‘s first in the Premier League in 1996-97.

Demolition work began following the conclusion of the Prem season and Roker Park was replaced by a housing estate.

There are 130 homes on the site now but there are remnants of the old ground to remind fans of their former home.

One road is named after Roker Park’s famous Clock Stand while others are called Midfield Drive and Goalmouth Close.

And in the location of the old pitch stands Promotion Close Park.

Sunderland’s departure from Roker Park was an emotional move for fans, but the Stadium of Light has become a new home.

The 48,707-capacity ground is one of the biggest in the country and has hosted England matches over the years.

It is on the 14-stadium shortlist to host games at Euro 2028 – and the Three Lions have an impressive record there.

In fact, England have won three out of three at the Stadium of Light.

Security fears over Champions League final as Man City fans told to arrive at stadium NINE HOURS before kick-off

June 8, 2023 by www.thesun.co.uk Leave a Comment

MANCHESTER CITY fans have been told to arrive NINE HOURS early for Saturday’s Champions League final.

Pep Guardiola’s side travel to Istanbul to take on Inter Milan , aiming to win their first ever Champions League crown.

City will be well backed by supporters flocking to Turkey this weekend, with authorities keen to avoid the distressing scenes that occurred at last year’s final.

Ticketing issues and errors by heavy-handed cops at last year’s Paris final endangered Liverpool supporters in attendance.

After initially trying to dodge the blame, Uefa chiefs eventually launched a review into the ticket chaos, and have new recommendations for this season’s showpiece event.

Talks have been held between Uefa and local cops, with the former believing that some elements of the policing may be beyond their control.

Uefa have managed to get a U-turn on initially proposed bans for items such as rainbow flags and clothing featuring the word “ultra”.

But fans are still being recommended to arrive nine hours early for the game, which kicks off at 10pm local time.

Ataturk Stadium, where Liverpool famously won their fifth Champions League in 2005, is situated more than an hour west of Istanbul city centre.

It is served by a metro station, but Uefa chiefs are urging fans to board shuttle buses at 1pm instead.

Once at the stadium, ticket holders will be invited to join a fanzone opening at 2pm – where food and beer will be on sale.

Fans will have to pass through THREE separate security checkpoints before entering the ground.

The first will require their phone bluetooth to be switched on as tickets are activated.

They will then be searched twice – once by police and a further time by a private security firm.

Metro trains are expected to stop running at 11:50pm – although shuttle buses back into the city centre will be put on until 3am.

No booze will be available to fans once inside the stadium, although the fan park will reopen for a short period after the match.

Fan group Football Supporters’ Europe have been working hard to ensure that there is no repeat of last year’s Uefa farce.

Ahead of this weekend’s final, their chief operating officer Niamh O’Mahony said: “Since last year’s final in Paris and also the review recommendations, we’ve seen a significant change in how Uefa works with us to prepare for the finals this year.

“FSE was part of a pre-final site visit, been able to hear plans, and give advice on how best to approach certain scenarios.

“That doesn’t mean all of our advice is being taken on board but it is considered, and that is an important change.

“FSE’s role is to constructively challenge the planning so that supporters in Istanbul can enjoy their trip and all the effort into planning will be worth it.

LIVERPOOL fans are still toasting their Champions League win over Tottenham in 2019.

But even the most ardent Anfield supporter will admit it pales in comparison to 2005’s Istanbul comeback against AC Milan.

Led by Rafa Benitez, the Reds lined up against one of the greatest club sides in European history.

A backline of Dida, Cafu, Jaap Stam, Alessandro Nesta and Paolo Maldini made for a rock-solid defence.

And a midfield four of Andrea Pirlo, Andrea Gattuso, Clarence Seedorf and Kaka remains one of the best in the business.

Milan also boasted a fearsome frontline of Andriy Shevchenko and Hernan Crespo.

SunSport reveals all below…

GK — JERZY DUDEK

Polish ace, 50, saved two penalties in the shootout and remains iconic thanks to distracting Milan with his “spaghetti legs.”

CB — JAMIE CARRAGHER

Popular centre-back, 45, was still playing for Reds up until 2013.

He has now made a name for himself as a pundit on Sky Sports and CBS.

RM — LUIS GARCIA

Silky Spaniard, 44, already had a reputation before joining Liverpool after time at Atletico Madrid and Barcelona.

He returned to Atleti after leaving Liverpool in 2007 and retired nine years later with Australian side Central Coast Mariners.

Garcia did not move into coaching but occasionally works as an analyst for ESPN.

CM — XABI ALONSO

Playmaker, 41, scored third against Milan before going from strength to strength after Liverpool with Real Madrid and Bayern Munich.

And Alonso, previously linked with Tottenham , is now coaching at the highest level after taking charge at Bayer Leverkusen in October.

CM — STEVEN GERRARD

Legendary midfielder, 43, scored first against Milan and remained a Liverpool man until 2015 before retiring at LA Galaxy.

LM — JOHN ARNE RIISE

Baros then went through six clubs in as many years, taking him from the Czech Republic to Turkey.

And incredibly, he is still playing at amateur level for minnows FK Vigantice.

FIRST SUB — VLADIMIR SMICER (23’)

The first sub in Istanbul, 50-year-old Smicer scored Liverpool’s second against Milan.
