Slowthai Inspires Moshpit Energy and Shows More Emotion on ‘Tyron’

February 12, 2021 by www.rollingstone.com Leave a Comment

It’s not too difficult to imagine the impulse behind a song like “CANCELLED,” the second single from the British rapper Slowthai’s new album, Tyron . The track features Skepta and follows a familiar revenge fantasy: our anti-hero MCs versus the proverbial naysayers, who in this case are the online agents of so-called cancel culture. At this point it’s an exhausting form of discourse. There are few things more unappealing than thinking about what people have to say on the internet. But throughout Tyron, Slowthai appears to be reckoning a punk-inspired brashness with a broader culture of accountability. The result is both illuminating and one-dimensional in equal measure.

Slowthai is of course no stranger to controversy. Following the success of his 2019 debut Nothing Great About Britain , the rapper, who drew comparisons to legendary UK acts like The Streets, appeared at the NME Awards where he made inappropriate comments towards the stand-up comic Katherine Ryan and eventually was escorted off stage by security. He apologized, and the dust-up would become a relatively forgotten relic of before-times, but it did offer a messy end to an otherwise promising rise for the young musician. Slowthai’s jagged energy was a welcome dose of chaos in the world of hip-hop. The seering political invective of his debut gave voice to a universal frustration with an elder generation that had left young people with little hope for their future.

Despite a handful of missed landings, Tyron still admirably inspires the kind of mosh-pit energy that feels nearly romantic in an era of closed venues and social distancing. “VEX” has the stuttering drums of early Memphis rap and finds Slowthai firmly in his sweet spot, shout-rapping a dizzying verse that balances a devil may care ethos with genuine introspection. On “DEAD,” things are slowed down, only slightly, and Slowthai flexes a knack for wordplay and in his own way, lets his guard down. The Kwes Darko-assisted hook could very well be a mantra at the start of a yoga class: “They can take away my flesh, but they’ll never take my mind.”

Slowthai told Rolling Stone earlier this year that he quit drinking, and Tyron certainly feels like a record about new beginnings. For one, its title is the rapper’s first name — a gesture of self-knowledge and accountability. It’s also divided into two parts. The front end, with song titles in all-caps, is full of the high-octane style most fans are familiar with. The latter half, with titles in lowercase, finds Slowthai in relatively new territory. The bpms are lower and Slowthai is in a place of genuine introspection. On “I Tried,” we open with a reflection: “I tried to take my life,” Slowthai sings. The track offers a rare look into the rapper’s interiority. “Life got me in a headlock, back and forth like a hockey puck,” he raps. “Always wanted muscles, lack of strength made me headstrong.”

It’s this honesty that makes the second half of Tyron stand out as the record’s greatest strength. On “Focus” Slowthai’s restless energy is harnessed to an appealing effect. Slowthai’s punk ethos isn’t subdued per se, but it is more focused. He’s clearly battling demons, and there are glimmers of genuine self reflection hidden in the rapper’s id-driven sputter. On the Deb Never-assisted “Push” we come close to a breakthrough: “I grew up ’round toxic, and people can’t see / ‘Cause they live in a pond with some dumb fish,” he raps.

The album’s emotional crest comes on “Feel Away,” where James Blake and Mount Kimbie offer a heaping dose of pathos to Slowthai’s guarded heartache. It’s a solid effort at reflection that sidesteps the easy tropes of his contemporaries. The same could be said for much of Tyron which, while not as evolved as it might think, is a solid effort at reflection from a promising young artist learning to get out of his own way.

Three things we learned from Brighton – Aston Villa

February 13, 2021 by soccer.nbcsports.com Leave a Comment

Brighton – Aston Villa: Brighton and Hove Albion took 26 shots but couldn’t find a way past Emiliano Martinez as Aston Villa drew the Seagulls 0-0 at the Amex Stadium on Saturday.

Brighton takes four of six points from Villa this season but will be grinding teeth at the thought of Martinez’s nine saves.

STREAM BRIGHTON – ASTON VILLA FULL MATCH REPLAY

The Seagulls’ 26 points are 11 clear of the bottom three, though Fulham has played two fewer matches, while Villa’s 36th point takes it above Tottenham into eight.

Three things we learned from Brighton – Aston Villa

1. Villa, Brighton tell same-old story: It’s somewhat fitting that the pre-match storyline centered around whether the Premier League’s least lucky finishers could find a way through a gritty Villa who had kept 11 clean sheets including leaving Leicester City, Southampton, and Arsenal (twice) without a goal. Brighton entered the day 8th in shots-per-game (12.3) but 15th in shots on target/90 (3.5). Villa had allowed the seventh-most shots in the league/90 (13.2) but were top half in goals conceded.

Brighton kept the ball 58 percent of the time — 64% in the second half — and the shot numbers were a cartoonish 26-4 for the Seagulls with nine shots on target. But no goals. Again .

2. Martinez keeps shining: The backup goalkeeper can often be the most popular guy in town and Arsenal fans would often wonder whether Emiliano Martinez wasn’t at least on the level of exceptional start Bernd Leno, if not better. Martinez has been as good as anyone not named Nick Pope since heading to Villa, and his eight saves are perhaps the only reason Brighton didn’t take another step toward the top half. Oddly enough, Brighton’s two top goalkeepers allowed Graham Potter to send Mathew Ryan to Arsenal.

3. Brighton has Grealish’s number: It’s rare that Jack Grealish is taken both off the score sheet and also off-kilter, but Brighton’s done it twice. The Villa star scrapped with Tariq Lamptey in the first meeting of the two sides, and Grealish still had a fight on his hands with Lamptey out of the lineup. Yves Bissouma, Ben White, and especially Joel Veltman held Grealish to one off-target shot and one completed dribble. Grealish had three fouls and four fouls drawn, while Veltman had three and three. Proper scrap. Respect.

Man of the Match: Emiliano Martinez

Brighton – Aston Villa recap

Alexis Mac Allister couldn’t get a 10th-minute chance under the bar as Brighton proved an early threat, and Joel Veltman forced a low save out of Emiliano Martinez.

It was all Brighton with little real danger when Trossard took a Mac Allister pass and forced a brilliant save out of Martinez with a hard-hit shot.

[ MORE: Klopp concedes Premier League title ]

Martinez needed full-stretch to push a Dan Burn header off wide of the far post off a Brighton corner.

The Seagulls lived in Villa’s final third but left the door open as the match remained scoreless in the 55th, then the 64th, then the 72nd.

Tyrone Mings made a terrific intervention to force Neal Maupay to fire wide of the goal after the Frenchman danced past Ezri Konsa in the 18.

Pharma, engineering power exports to 6.16% y-on-y growth in Jan

February 15, 2021 by www.rediff.com Leave a Comment

Growing for the second consecutive month, the country’s exports rose 6.16 per cent year-on-year to USD 27.45 billion in January 2021 following a healthy growth in pharma and engineering sectors, according to provisional data of the commerce ministry.

Photograph: Tyrone Siu/Reuters.

Trade deficit during the month narrowed to USD 14.54 billion from USD 15.3 billion in January 2020. It was USD 15.44 billion in December 2020.

Imports in January 2021 rose 2 per cent to USD 42 billion.

Exports of pharmaceuticals and engineering grew 16.4 per cent (USD 2 billion), and about 19 per cent (USD 7.4 billion), respectively, the data showed.

Other sectors which recorded growth included oil meals, iron ore, tobacco, rice, fruits and vegetables, carpets, handicrafts, spices, tea, cashew, plastic and chemicals.

Export sectors which recorded a negative growth included petroleum products (-32 per cent), ready-made garments of all textiles (-10.73 per cent), and leather (-18.6 per cent).

In December 2020, the country’s merchandise exports had recorded a growth of 0.14 per cent.

Imports of gold jumped by about 155 per cent to USD 4 billion in January this year.

Other import segments which recorded growth were pulses, pearls, precious and semi-precious stones, cotton raw and waste, vegetable oil, chemicals, and machine tools.

However, cumulatively, exports during April-January 2020-21 contracted by 13.58 per cent to USD 228.25 billion as against USD 264.13 billion during the same period last year, the data showed.

Similarly, imports dropped by about 26 per cent to USD 300.26 billion during April-January this fiscal.

In January 2021, oil imports were USD 9.40 billion, as compared to USD 13.01 billion in January 2020, a decline by 27.72 per cent.

Oil imports in April-January 2020-21 were USD 63.09 billion, as against USD 109.72 billion in April-January 2019-20, showing a decline of 42.5 per cent.

Commenting on the numbers, Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO) President S K Saraf said negative growth in exports of major products including petroleum products, leather, meat, dairy and poultry products, and gems and jewellery, which are major constituents of the export basket and mainly related to labour-intensive sectors, have been of key concern during the month.

He urged the government to soon notify the RoDTEP rates, which will remove uncertainty from the minds of the trade and industry thereby helping them forge new contracts with overseas buyers.

‘Mick Jagger made me uncomfortable when I tried to take pictures!’ Jo Wood admits regrets over not documenting her time with The Rolling Stones but happiness over her kids going on tour

February 5, 2021 by www.dailymail.co.uk Leave a Comment

Jo Wood has voiced her regrets over her time with The Rolling Stones and admitted frontman Mick Jagger made her feel ‘uncomfortable’ when she took pictures.

Speaking on the new series of The Hot Mess Mums Club podcast, hosted by Jenny Powell and Kelly Pegg, Jo, 65, revealed details of touring with her ex-husband Ronnie Wood, 73, before splitting in 2011 following a 26-year marriage.

On touring with the iconic rockers, she lamented not taking more snaps while also discussing taking their kids, Leah, 42, and Tyrone, 37, and her son Jamie, 46, from a previous marriage, around the world with the band.

Living it up: Jo Wood has voiced her regrets over her time spent with The Rolling Stones and admitted frontman Mick Jagger made her feel ‘uncomfortable’ (Jo, Mick and Ronnie Wood in The Rolling Stones’ heyday)

In the podcast, Jo admitted she wished she had taken more pictures of the band after Ronnie bought her a camera, saying: ‘Ronnie bought me my first Polaroid when we moved to LA then he bought me my first camera in the 80s.

‘I actually wish I had taken more pictures, because there were so many times, I wish I had taken more pictures of Mick, but he always made me feel so uncomfortable when I got my camera out…’

Host Jenny, who was in a three-year relationship with Take That star Jason Orange, said: ‘I used to feel like that with Gary Barlow.’

Mother-of-three Jo added: ‘So, I wish I had but mind you, Keith made up for that because, he would pose or anything, he was great, great guy.’

Rock ‘n’ Roll: Jo said she ‘wished she’d taken more pictures of the band but Mick Jagger made her feel ‘uncomfortable’ when she got her camera out  (pictured L-R: Rolling Stones members Ronnie, Mick Jagger, Charlie Watts, Keith Richards)

The former model also spoke about taking her children on tour with the band, adding that they ‘learned so much from travelling’

She said: ‘We weren’t allowed to bring the kids on tour, maybe because they were too young, and then in ’89 I missed my kids so much on the first leg of the tour and I said to Ronnie, ‘come on, it’s a kids’ holiday, let’s take the kids to Japan…

‘Then after that all the kids started coming out, only in school holidays, but it was lovely because they learnt so much from travelling around the world, and learning about other cultures and it was great.’

Speaking out: In the podcast, Jo admitted she wished she had taken more pictures of the band after Ronnie bought her a camera, saying: ‘Ronnie bought me my first polaroid when we moved to LA then he bought me my first camera in the 80s (pictured with ex-husband Ronnie Wood, 73, in 2006)

The former Strictly Come Dancing star, revealed that she was put on steroids after being misdiagnosed with a serious illness, and has since been following a strictly organic lifestyle.

She said: ‘I am a true believer in what you put in and on your body, is so very important, especially in this age where we have all these viruses.

‘I really believe in eating fresh, non-genetically modified foods, eating organic, then it keeps your brain healthy, keeps you feeling good.’

She added: ‘What really made me turn away from the party lifestyles was, we were in Ireland, and I got ill and thought I had gotten food poisoning, and I went to see the doctor and went back to London and saw loads of doctors.

Lost love: Businesswoman Jo started dating builder Paul Scarborough after he renovated her North London townhouse in 2012, before they called it quits five years later (pictured in 2017)

‘They then misdiagnosed me with Crohn’s disease, and had put me on steroids, and I had this article come out in the paper that said, ‘STONES WIFE WITH INCURABLE DISEASE’.

‘I got hundreds of letters, and I sat on the floor and I sat there and went through them and loads of people were telling me about their Crohn’s disease.

‘Then one letter said, “I will put your Crohn’s disease into remission for life, if you come and see me and follow my diet and take my herbs”, so I got in my car, I drove to Hastings, his front door said ‘Shangri-La’ on it.

‘I walked in, and there was this old boy called Gerald Green and he was a herbalist. And he asked, “what do you eat” so I said, me and my sister love lean cuisine and I get McDonalds for the kids on a Friday and I do this and I do that.

‘So, he told me about the food I was putting in my body, and in that afternoon at his house he changed the way I thought about food forever. So, I started weening myself off the steroids and using his diet over 4 months, and I felt better and better.’

Family: The mother-of-three said her children ‘learned so much from travelling’ while on tour with the band [Jo pictured with Ronnie and children Jamie, Tyrone and Leah in 1989]

She then fell for top rugby coach Carl Douglas in 2018 after meeting on the Telegraph’s dating site, but the couple ended their romance last year.

The Jo Wood Organics CEO said: ‘I do like my own company, I didn’t at first, when I was first single and moved into my place in Camden, I hated it being alone, but here, I just love being on my own.

‘I can potter around, I can get up when I want, I can have a bath and lay in the bath for hours, I can just do things I want to do.

‘I broke up with my boyfriend around 8 months ago, and I enjoyed being on my own. I hope that I can have a relationship with somebody and want to be with them all the time, but in the meantime, I have got a bit selfish.

The Rolling Stones: Jo said that she wishes she’d taken more snaps of Mick but that ‘Keith made up for that because, he would pose for anything’ (pictured on the Steel Wheels tour in 1989)

‘I never thought I would be like this because I was married to Ronnie for 31 years and then the kids left home, and it was like oh my god, what are we gonna do, and then I was on my own.’

Although enjoying being on her own, Jo has been told she has ‘set the bar too high’ by being married to a famous rock and roll star in the past.

She said: ‘I have had guys say to me that I have set the bar too high by being an ex wife of someone from The Rolling Stones. I’ve had to say “I’m a normal girl I promise!” they are really scared of that.’

Host Jenny joked: ‘I mean mine’s not quite the same but I have had guys say to me ‘you went out with that guy who spun on his head from Take That’ and for a guy it takes a lot of confidence to match these things.’

But the pair remain friendly and speak ‘a lot’, after they finally split for good in 2009, despite the relationship being strained at first.

The businesswoman is enjoying being single, but admitted she ‘never thought’ she’d be on her own until she split with Ronnie and her children left home [the family pictured in 2005]

Jo said: ’I talk to Ronnie quite a lot. When we first split up, he was weird with me even though he was the one who left me. So, I tried to encourage, because of the kids and grandkids, that we were friends, and we had so much history together.

‘He was funny at first and would avoid me, but slowly he came around, maybe it was Sally that helped it come along.

‘Every year I would ask him to pop in and then one year he finally said, “yeah me and Sally will pop in”. So now, it’s easy to pick up the phone and we ring each other any time we want so it’s important for our family and for all those memories.’

Divorce: Ronnie and Jo split for good in 2009 and he went on to marry actress Sally Humphreys in 2012, with whom he shares twin daughters Gracie Jane and Alice Rose, four

10 things we learned in the Premier League – Matchweek 23

February 7, 2021 by soccer.nbcsports.com Leave a Comment

What did we learn in the Premier League over the weekend?

[ MORE: How to watch PL in the USA ]

Here’s a look at 10 things which stood out, as our writers Joe Prince-Wright (JPW), Nick Mendola (NM) and Andy Edwards (AE) share their observations from across the most recent Premier League games.

[ VIDEO: Premier League highlights ]

Let’s get to it.

1. Man City too much, as Alisson melts down (Liverpool 1-4 Man City): There will be talked about whether new signing Ozan Kabak should’ve slotted next to Fabinho or Jordan Henderson at the back, and we’re not sure whether it’s undeserved. Yes, Kabak is 20 and has just arrived from another league, but he was playing for an often under-siege Schalke side and is facing Bayern that different than Man City? He’s also a natural center back who is good with the ball and in the air. That said, Alisson’s day turned into a nightmare pretty much from the moment he made a fine save on Foden that Gundogan put in the goal for 1-0. The Liverpool star keeper passed the ball directly to City twice in plays that wound up in his goal within 10 touches (each, or maybe even total). (NM)

2. Alexander-Arnold was the first hour (Liverpool 1-4 Man City): Yes, of course, there were meaningful incidents that did not involve the Liverpool right back, but how Alexander-Arnold responded to a Pep Guardiola game plan aimed at him was the game. Time and time again Ruben Dias or Rodri got the ball in the center of the park and looked to find Raheem Sterling on the left flank, not unlike City’s work during Leroy Sane’s best days. With Trent Alexander-Arnold’s attacking an amazing threat going forward but his defending somewhat-limited, this was a thrill to watch play out. Alexander-Arnold nearly won the first half of the battle before he was dusted by Sterling for what became Gundogan’s missed penalty. He could’ve easily had an assist to Sadio Mane, who will be furious at his finishing but not his threat. The Senegalese star provided a lot of danger to keep City off-kilter and carried it into the early second half. (NM)

3. Both sides undone by goalkeeper errors (Man United 3-3 Everton): Maybe there’s something in the water on Merseyside, where backup goalkeeper Robin Olsen made a number of good saves but slipped while trying to corral McTominay’s winner. He would’ve certainly had it, but instead will join incumbent Jordan Pickford as Toffees goalkeepers to cost their team at least one point this season. Earlier in the half, United keeper De Gea failed to clear a Calvert-Lewin cross and Doucoure poked home as part of Everton’s first comeback. (NM)

4. Kane back (Tottenham 2-0 West Brom): Kane’s 13th goal in 20 league outings was classic Harry, zipping into the box with perfect timing and coolly slotting past the keeper (a good one at that). He’s added 11 assists this season and it’s telling that Lucas Moura and Heung-min Son all looked much more dangerous with defenders worried about the center forward and captain. Kane wasn’t super sharp with his shooting but his knowledge of space and timing was on point; He managed five of Spurs’ 13 shot attempts and had two key passes in going 90 minutes, also joining Bobby Smith for the second-most goals in Tottenham history. Jose Mourinho has no doubt Kane will break Jimmy Greaves all-time record. (NM)

5. Tough to score goals without creating chances (Sheffield United 1-2 Chelsea): For all the money Chelsea spent on young attacking talent in the summer, the Blues appear completely devoid of a single attacking idea that’s not “get the ball wide and cross it.” Mason Mount and Mateo Kovacic progress the ball quite well, but they’re hardly visionaries in the final third. Ben Chilwell and Reece James offer fantastic width on either side, but their only contribution to the attack is the aforementioned (and loathed) cross and hope. When teams sit deep and defend, like Sheffield United did on Sunday, Chelsea will always struggle. (AE)

6. Defensive improvement key for Villa (Aston Villa 1-0 Arsenal): Emiliano Martinez, Tyrone Mings, Ezri Konsa, Matty Cash and Matt Targett have been pretty much ever-present as a back five and Villa’s massively improved defense has been key to their incredible turnaround. Villa have now equalled their points tally of 35 from last season in just 21 games this season, and that’s because they don’t concede sloppy goals. That trend started during ‘Project Restart’ in the summer. They have 11 shutouts in their 21 games so far and that is a remarkable record. Only Man City have more shutouts than Villa this season and they look so confident of holding onto a lead. (JPW)

7. Almiron’s finest hour (Newcastle 3-2 Southampton): Ex-Atlanta United star Miguel Almiron had arguably the best game of his Newcastle career in his 78th appearance for the club, producing two goals and showing not just his threat and industry — which is usually apparent — but control of his talent and cool in the final moment. He upped his NUFC goals from 11 to 13, and added three tackles while winning 6-of-9 duels when forced to deploy his best defensive stance. (NM)

8. Irons get a point from a dud performance (Fulham 0-0 West Ham): The Irons were solid enough at the back, too, but their front four of Said Benrahma, Jesse Lingard, Jarrod Bowen, and Michail Antonio had trouble getting going in West London. Antonio worked hard and Benrahma was the brightest of the quartet but it never looked like much was coming for the Irons in the rain-soaked venue. (NM)

9. Both teams have enough to stay out of bottom three (Burnley 1-1 Brighton): Burnley are too robust to get sucked into the relegation battle, while Brighton have too much quality in midfield and attack to not pick up plenty of points between now and the end of the season. Simply put: even though these teams are just above the relegation zone, it seems very unlikely they will get dragged into the bottom three. (JPW)

10. Leicester turn attention to top four, UEL (Wolves 0-0 Leicester): Brendan Rodgers men have gone winless in three of four matches for the second time since Dec. 16-28. While there are reasons for that, with Wilfred Ndidi and Wesley Fofana missing out and Jamie Vardy just returning, it doesn’t change the lost chances to stay in the Premier League title fight by this draw as well as a loss to Leeds, draw at Palace, and taking just one of six points from Everton. The Foxes are now four points back of Man City before the leaders play one of two matches-in-hand, and are just four points clear of fifth-place West Ham. (NM)
