KOTA KINABALU: Most of Sabah’s new Covid-19 cases are sporadic, says Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun.

The minister in charge of pandemic matters in the state said out of the 123 new cases on Monday

(June 27), 81 cases were recorded in Kota Kinabalu.

“Out of these cases in Kota Kinabalu, over 85% are sporadic, which means the transmission rates are riskier in crowded areas,” he said.

Masidi urged the public to continue maintaining high preventive measures including practising ongoing standard operating precautions (SOP) to reduce the spread of Covid-19.

He said from the total new cases, 121 were under Category 1 and Category 2, while two were under Category 4.

Apart from Kota Kinabalu, the other districts with new cases reported are Penampang with 13 cases, Keningau (nine), Tuaran (nine), Kota Belud (three), Ranau (two), Tambunan (two), and one each in Papar, Tawau, Tenom and Tongod.

State Covid-19 spokesman Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun said this was 12 more cases compared with the 125 infections yesterday (June 22).

“The caseload shot up to 137 today due to the huge increase in new cases in Kota Kinabalu and Penampang, which detected 17 and 18 infections respectively,” he said.

He said Sabah registered a high number of cases despite 13 out of the 27 districts recording a lower number of cases, adding that only five districts recorded an increase in infections. At the same time, he said, 16 districts did not record any new cases.

“The 35 cases recorded in the state capital and Penampang contributed significantly to the jump in cases in Sabah,” Masidi said.

KOTA KINABALU: Covid-19 cases have breached the 100 mark again after recording 125 new infections in the last 24 hours.

The state had only registered less than 100 cases in the past three days since recording 127 cases on June 18.

Sabah Covid-19 spokesman Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun said Wednesday’s (June 22) cases were 29 more compared to Tuesday (June 21).

He said sporadic, or community, infections were still behind the rising number of cases.

“A total of 64% of the patients today contracted the virus through sporadic infections which means we don’t know who or where they got it from,” he said, in a statement.

“Such infections normally occur at heavily populated locations such as city centres, particularly at congested areas.

“The public is again advised to be extra careful in such areas and should always follow the health standard operating procedures,” he added.

Masidi said the state capital recorded the highest number of new infections at 44 followed by Penampang (24), Sandakan (12) and Putatan (11).

He said districts that did not record any cases the previous day such as Tawau, Semporna, Tongod, Nabawan, Kalabakan, Lahad Datu and Kuala Penyu had all detected new cases in the past 24 hours.

He added only nine districts did not record any new cases compared to 15 the previous day.

Of the 125 cases recorded on Wednesday, he said 122 comprised Category 1 and 2 cases Category 4 had two cases and one case was detected under Category 5.
