Five good news stories: a break from climate anxiety, the EU country sponsoring newer tech and more

July 1, 2022 by www.euronews.com Leave a Comment

Because we think you deserve to know what is going well in the world, we bring you another instalment of the good news round-up, a weekly digest of positive stories to brighten up your day.

The list is not biased, political or moralising. It is just plain good news, picked by our team because it inspires us and brings us hope.

  1. First, we give you the US city that moved 25,000 people from the streets to homes of their own.
  2. Then, we battle climate anxiety with a look at the first major proposal in 30 years to reverse catastrophic wildlife loss in Europe.
  3. Because we like governments that support their people and their environment, we cover a new government initiative in Greece that tackles both rising energy bills and outdated technology.
  4. In Sweden, we look into a pilot smart road that powers vehicles from below.
  5. Then on to the inspiring rebirth of a modern-day Phoenix in Japan.

Watch the video above for more on each story (we highly recommend), or read on below…

1. The US city that moved 25,000 people from the streets to homes of their own.

The American city of Houston is tackling its homeless problem head-on, reducing the number of people living on the street by 63 per cent.

It has achieved what no other major US city has managed, thanks to a “housing first” approach that focuses on getting homeless people safely into their own apartments as fast as possible, and only dealing with issues such as work, drug addiction and mental health afterwards.

The city is responding to research that says this is the most efficient way to get people off the street. Finland, the only EU country where homelessness is falling, has used the same strategy, giving people homes as soon as they need them – unconditionally.

In one of the government’s homeless categories, the waiting process to get a home in Houston has been cut from 720 days to just 32.

One of the greatest challenges the authorities face in these situations is that residents often end up back on the streets, but according to local media, the vast majority of Houston’s relocated people have stayed in their houses for more than two years.

The city hasn’t solved homelessness, but it has made amazing progress and shown the world a fast way to get people off the streets and under a roof.

2. The first major proposal in 30 years to reverse catastrophic wildlife loss in Europe.

In an unprecedented boom for European wildlife, the European Commission has drawn up an ambitious plan to reverse the tide of biodiversity loss across the continent.

The proposal will push member states to restore previous levels of wildlife and habitats on land, rivers and the sea over the next decade, as well to halve the use of pesticides and protect pollinators such as bees, butterflies and beetles.

“The main target is going to have 20 per cent of nature restoration action around the EU by 2030,” said Virginijus Sinkevičius, European Commissioner for the Environment, in an exclusive conversation with Euronews.

Where marine habitats have been destroyed by trawling, there will be pressure to close down fishing areas.

Around €100 billion will be available for spending on biodiversity and the restoration of ecosystems. The target to cut the use of pesticides has been set for 2030, so that farmers will have time to find alternatives.

’We should stop living in the myth that acting for nature, and restoring nature are just costs and no benefits. Our impact assessment shows that one invested euro brings €8 of benefits,” said Sinkevičius.

The proposals could become law next year, and member states who fail to follow through will face legal action.

“The main target is to have 20 per cent of nature restoration action around the EU by 2030.”

3. A new government initiative in Greece tackles both rising energy bills and outdated technology.

Households in Greece are staying cool this summer with a government plan to help them replace their old fridges, freezers and air conditioners with more efficient models, and cut down on eye-watering electricity bills.

Greek citizens will be able to buy up to three appliances per family and get a discount of between 30 and 50 per cent on the regular price.

Like many other EU countries, Greece has been hit by soaring energy costs, but the country has invested about €7 billion to help households pay their electricity and petrol bills.

Households taking part in the scheme could cut their energy needs by 40 per cent. Across Greece, this could add up to the equivalent of the energy consumed every year by a city of 100,000 people.

According to the government, it could also save €40 million a year on gas and oil imports.

4. A pilot smart road powers vehicles from below.

You’ve heard of Electric Avenue, but Sweden is working on making this a reality.

On the holiday island of Gotland, a groundbreaking “SmartRoad” is helping to power an airport shuttle bus.

“It’s a wireless electric road. So, we are charging while driving,” explains Petra Carlenarson, project manager at SmartRoad Gotland.

The 1.6km SmartRoad is a pilot project that allows electricity to flow wirelessly, via induction, from wide copper coils built under the asphalt to three receivers installed underneath the bus.

The bus has special receivers and they have installed coils under the asphalt. The road identifies the bus as it passes over the coils “transferring energy through the air to the bus,” says Carlenarson.

The technology, which was developed by Israeli company Electreon, says tests have seen a 40-ton truck reach speeds of up to 80 kilometres per hour. It is claimed to be a world-first for charging larger trucks and buses.

And they expect the technology to eventually drip down to personal vehicles, such as electric cars.

The tech could soon be charging up to 2,000 kilometres of Sweden’s busiest roads, and similar projects are underway in Italy, Germany and Israel.

5. The rebirth of a modern-day phoenix in Japan

The island of Sado in Japan has a curious mascot. A regal feathered creature by the name of toki is seen on t-shirts, milk cartons and – more and more – striding through the paddy fields.

The wild toki is a type of ibis that for decades was dangerously close to extinction. In just under 20 years, however, Japan’s toki population has jumped from close to zero to around 500.

This is partly due to a stroke of luck in 1981 when a group of seven toki was discovered in a remote area of China’s Shaanxi province. In 1998, then-Chinese President Jiang Zemin brought a pair of them to Japan as a gift. After a few years, Sado had a large enough population to consider reintroducing the toki to the wild.

Toki mostly feed in rice paddies, however, where the chemicals used in modern farming methods can be harmful to them. Sado’s farmers were asked to halve their use of fertilisers and pesticides but were initially reluctant. Until the Toki itself changed their minds.

Farmers reluctant to adapt were “delighted” to see a bird with almost mythical status on Sado wandering through their fields.

“They said: ‘Toki came to my rice paddies, so I should farm in a way that pleases them’. The toki played a role in changing the environment for themselves. This is a true story. The toki was almost like an environmental ambassador,” says Shinichiro Saito, a rice farmer in Sado.

Tata Cliq News: Tata Cliq to be integrated with Tata Neu, exits electronics business

July 1, 2022 by www.gadgetsnow.com Leave a Comment

Tatas’ online retail platform Tata Cliq is likely to be integrated with Tata Neu super app and made a subsidiary of Tata Digital as the group seeks to consolidate its major ecommerce ventures under this entity, officials close to the development told ET.

At present, Tata Cliq is run by Tata UniStore that is jointly owned by Tata Industries and the group’s lifestyle retail venture Trent .

Tata Cliq has exited the consumer electronics category, which formed 50-55% of its business, and its consumer electronics, smartphones and appliances division has been integrated with Croma, Tatas’ flagship consumer electronics retail chain, officials said.

Croma will be the primary entity enabling sales of electronics on Tata Neu app.

“The group is still evaluating how to position Tata Cliq,” said senior executive at one of the group companies said. “For instance, its presence in categories like electronics was a conflict of interest for Tata Neu and Croma and hence it had to exit this category to focus on lifestyle and luxury categories where it has built a niche.”

Emails sent to Tata Cliq and Tata Digital remained unanswered till press time Thursday.

The holding company of Infiniti Retail, which owns Croma, has been recently changed from Tata Sons to Tata Digital, which is becoming the front face for all ecommerce business of the group. Tata Digital has also acquired e-grocer BigBasket and e-pharmacy 1mg over the last year.

The Croma app is now only available on Tata Neu. It will continue to be an independent online seller as well.

Tata Cliq, too, will now move under the Tata Neu app, officials said. The move is part of Tata Group’s efforts to bring heft to Tata Neu and integrate synergistic businesses under one single umbrella for scale.

Executives said Tata Cliq may pivot its business on luxury or beauty and the challenge for it would be to differentiate itself from rivals such as Myntra in fashion and Nykaa in the beauty space.

Tata Cliq also has another online platform, Tata Luxury, and may explore the possibility of combining the two to remove duplication.

Tata Cliq sells a variety of product categories and brands and has a large emphasis on fashion. However, electronics, home appliances, and smartphones were seen as the big ticket play.

As per latest regulatory filings, the Tatas infused Rs 11,872 crore into Tata Digital last fiscal – the highest ever fund allocation the group has made into ecommerce in any single year to help the company build a war chest to take on established ecommerce rivals such as Amazon and Walmart-owned Flipkart.

Days after being arrested over a four-year-old tweet that allegedly made derogatory references to Hindu deities, a team of Delhi Police conducted searches at the Bengaluru residence of the Alt News co-founder Mohammed Zubair.

Sources said that the team left for Bengaluru early on Thursday and reached his home at around 11:30 am. Mr. Zubair is a resident of North Bengaluru’s DJ Halli.

Police said the searches were conducted to recover electronic devices like his phone and laptop, which would be part of police evidence.

This comes after two days after a Delhi court granted the Delhi Police four-day police custody remand of Mr. Zubair.

Mr. Zubair was arrested by Delhi Police’s IFSO (Intelligence Fusion and Strategics Operation Unit) on June 27 over a tweet he had posted in 2018. The Delhi Police was alerted to the post by a Twitter handle which had retweeted Mr. Zubair’s tweet earlier this month. He was arrested after being called to IFSO’s Dwarka office for questioning in a 2020 POCSO case, in which he had already been granted protection from arrest by the Delhi High Court.

Delhi HC Seeks Police Stand on Alt News Co-founder Mohammed Zubair’s Plea Against Police Remand

July 1, 2022 by www.news18.com Leave a Comment

The Delhi High Court on Friday sought the stand of Delhi police on a plea by Alt News co-founder Mohammed Zubair challenging the legality of his police remand in a case related to an alleged objectionable tweet he had posted in 2018 against a Hindu deity.

Justice Sanjeev Narula issued notice on the petition and granted two weeks to the investigating agency to file its response to the petition which challenges the legality and proprietary of the trial court’s June 28 order granting four days of custody of Zubair to the police. The judge listed the case for further hearing on July 27 and said that proceedings before the trial court would continue without being influenced by the present proceedings.

The court noted that the remand order would expire on July 2 and said, “The police remand order is for four days. I will have to hear the other side. I will issue notice”. Zubair was arrested by the Delhi Police on June 27 for allegedly hurting religious sentiments through one of his tweets and was sent to one-day police custody by the trial court on the same day.

After being produced on the expiry of his one-day custodial interrogation, his custody was extended by another four days by Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Snigdha Sarvaria. As per the trial court’s order, Zubair would be next produced before it on July 2 upon the expiry of the four days of police remand.

Earlier this month, a case against Zubair was registered under sections 153A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, language, etc.) and 295A (deliberate and malicious act intended to outrage religious feelings) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Police said the case was registered on the complaint of a Twitter user who accused him of hurting religious sentiments.

Police, while seeking an extension of Zubair’s custody by five days, had told the trial court that the accused was allegedly following a trend where he used religious tweets in an effort to get famous and that there was a deliberate effort to create social disharmony and hurt religious feelings. The investigating agency had also said that the accused joined the probe but did not cooperate and various material from his phone was deleted.

Advocate Vrinda Grover, appearing for the accused, had opposed the police plea alleging that the agency had called Zubair for questioning in some other case but he was arrested in the present case in haste. Zubair’s counsel had also said that the photo which the accused used in the tweets is of an old Hindi film from 1983 by Hrishikesh Mukherjee, ‘Kissi Se Na Kehna’, and that the film was not banned.

The trial court had, however, rejected the submission saying it was of no assistance to the accused at this stage. Considering that the mobile phone/laptop of the accused used by him for posting the tweet in question is to be recovered at the instance of accused Mohammed Zubair from his Bangalore residence and that accused has remained non-cooperative and the disclosure statement on record, four days PC (police custody) remand of accused is granted since accused is to be taken to Bangalore, the trial court had said in a 3-page order.

Inter Milan signed on Friday Cameroon goalkeeper Andre Onana and Henrikh Mkhitaryan, the pair arriving in Milan as free agents after their respective contracts with Ajax and Roma expired.

The two signings were listed among completed transfers on Serie A’s website, making the deals official even if Inter have not formally announced their arrivals, as the contracts have been deposited with Italy’s top flight.

Inter have been active in the summer transfer window, which in Italy officially opened on Friday, also signing Romelu Lukaku and Kristjan Asllani on loan from Chelsea and Empoli.

They are also in talks to bring in another free agent in Paulo Dybala, who has been let go by Juventus after they refused to renew his contract.

Onana, 26, has been brought in as the successor to 37-year-old Samir Handanovic, who has been at Inter for a decade.

He has signed a five-year deal with Inter after not playing much since being handed a nine-month doping ban a year ago.

Former Armenia international Mkhitaryan arrives in Milan on a two-year deal which will reportedly net him 4.5 million euros ($4.7 million) a season.

He played for three years at Roma, winning the inaugural Europa Conference League under Jose Mourinho last season.

The 33-year-old has played for Manchester United — where he won the Europa League and the League Cup — Arsenal and Borussia Dortmund.

He also won three consecutive Ukrainian League and Cup doubles with Shakhtar Donetsk between 2011 and 2013.
