Silicon Valley Bank was the 16th largest bank in America, the bank of choice for tech startups and big-name venture capitalists. Then, in the span of just a few days, it collapsed. Whispers that SVB might be in trouble spread like wildfire through group texts and Twitter posts. Depositors raced to empty their accounts, withdrawing $42 billion in a single day. Last Friday, after regulators declared that SVB had failed, the FDIC seized the bank.

The Collapse Of Silicon Valley Bank

As the dust settles on the biggest bank failure — and bank rescue — in recent memory, we’re still figuring out what happened. But poor investment choices, weak regulation, and customer panic all played their parts. We’ll look into the bank’s collapse to understand what it can teach us about the business of banking itself.

Since we started Planet Money Records and released the 47-year-old song “Inflation,” the song has taken off. It recently hit 1 million streams on Spotify. And we now have a full line of merch — including a limited edition vinyl record; a colorful, neon hoodie; and 70s-inspired stickers — n.pr/shopplanetmoney .

After starting a label and negotiating our first record deal, we’re taking the Inflation song out into the world to figure out the hidden economics of the music business. Things get complicated when we try to turn the song into a viral hit. Just sounding good isn’t enough and turning a profit in the music business means being creative, patient and knowing the right people.

Scream VI Heads to the Big City in Its First Teaser

December 14, 2022 by gizmodo.com Leave a Comment

Fun fact: The Ghostface mask, best known as the headwear of whoever decided to kill people in the various Scream movies, was created several years before the first Scream debuted in 1996. So it’s entirely plausible that a multitude of people on a subway car would be wearing Ghostface masks on what I have to assume is Halloween. The question is, how many of them are actual murderers?

Scream VI | Official Teaser Trailer (2023 Movie)

The answer is at least one, according to this first teaser for Scream VI , the newest sequel after the franchise returned earlier this year. About all we know is that the movie has traded the sleepy, murderous town of Woodboro for New York City, and franchise star Neve Campbell wasn’t offered enough money to return. However, Jenna Ortega, Courteney Cox, Hayden Panetierre, Melissa Barrera, Jasmin Savoy Brown, and Mason Gooding are all back, along with Jack Champion, Henry Czerny, Liana Liberato, Dermot Mulroney, Devyn Nekoda, Tony Revolori, Josh Segarra, and Samara Weaving.

All the Completely Insane Ideas Hollywood dreamed up for I Am Legend 2

February 11, 2014 by gizmodo.com Leave a Comment

Hollywood really wanted to make I Am Legend 2, starring Will Smith. Even though he died in the first one. Fortunately, this never happened — but producer and writer Akiva Goldsman was happy to share the many failed ideas they had for an I Am Legend prequel and/or sequel. Warning: These ideas are all totally batshit insane.

We sat down with Winter’s Tale director and longtime Hollywood blockbuster maker Akiva Goldsman, to chat about his adaptation of Mark Helprin’s novel. But before we get to that, we also checked in on Goldsman’s many movie projects, including getting a tiny update on Dark Tower and all the details on the failed I Am Legend 2 drafts.

There are a lot of projects you’re working on that our readers are really excited about. Dark Tower kind of seems like it’s stuck in the ether of Hollywood, what’s going on with that right now?

Akiva Goldsman: Dark Tower really is in the ether of Hollywood. We continue to turn it over. We are definitely in the “never say die” mode. Roland has managed to keep walking for a long time and I don’t want him to fall down on our watch.

There was talk of an I Am Legend 2 ?

Never.

There was never talk of it?

Oh no no, [there was] never a movie. I mean, we wrote a prequel [and] a sequel. We had a really interesting prequel, which was the first outbreak of the virus, during a Thanksgiving Day parade, which was awesome. We did a really interesting prequel that [took place] later. Which was right after the first… really right when the population of of humans became pretty decimated. And it was this sort of trek to Washington. Which included a dark seeker elephant that had broken out of the zoo.

Then we did a sequel, that started with Neville again — and you realized that he was cloned. We’ve tried every which way. In fact if you’re available you could be in the next movie. It will never happen but we really enjoyed trying to make it happen.

I like the idea of the bloody Macy’s Day Parade, it’s cool that you guys pitched ideas.

Oh we tried. There were scripts. We really tried.

And there you have it. More on Goldsman’s Winter’s Tale tomorrow.
