Introducing unseen women freedom fighters

August 12, 2022 by www.thehindu.com Leave a Comment

When a British revenue officer assembled at their village to forcefully collect tax, the women of Shinganamakki village near Ankola ensured that he found nothing to eat or drink an entire day, to teach him a lesson. When he wanted to make his own tea, they hid the tea leaves, utensils, and sugar. This was their way of mutiny against the British administration.

Like them, thousands of lesser known women from the State were a part of the freedom struggle. To create awareness about such women, the Karnataka Rajya Mahila Dourjanya Okkoota is touring the city, educating people about them since August 1.

The campaign, which is being taken up on the occasion of 75 years of independence, is being supported by other local communities. Two programmes earlier this week were supported by street vendors’ associations in Vijayanagar and Shivajinagar, while Wednesday’s programme in RT Nagar was supported by the transgender community. The women go to market places or educational institutions and other open spaces with banners and the national flag and sing songs, narrate stories of the women freedom fighters, and read the preamble of the constitution aloud. The stories of all categories of women freedom fighters irrespective of caste, class, and religion have been included in the campaign.

“These women were a part of various freedom movements like the Quit India Movement, Salt Satyagraha, Swadeshi movement, and many other for which Mahatma Gandhi had called for. They were present in every corner of the movement and these are very interesting stories. Normally, we only remember a few famous freedom fighters and even history speaks about them. Hence, with this campaign, we are trying to tell the stories of the unseen women to the next generations,” said Du Saraswati, writer and one of the leaders of the campaign.

The group has also visited colleges in Basavanagudi and Malleswaram to spread awareness.

The Okkoota has also released a document which traces the stories of women freedom fighters from the country with special focus on women from Karnataka. A meeting will be conducted at SEM Hall on August 15 where discussions will take place around the topic of “social freedom” and future of the country and also an exhibition of pictures and paintings.

Ukraine Calls Again for More Funds, Arms, Munitions, to ‘Stop Russia’

August 12, 2022 by www.breitbart.com Leave a Comment

Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky on Thursday renewed his almost weekly call for Western nations to do more to help his besieged nation in its fight against invading Russian forces.

Financial donations remain a top priority closely followed by a call for advanced fighter jets and associated trainers.

“The sooner we stop Russia, the sooner we can feel safe,” Zelensky said while meeting defense leaders at a Denmark conference aimed at ensuring foreign supplies continue delivering weapons, training, and demining work in his country.

“We need armaments, munitions for our defense,” the leader added, speaking via a live link from Ukraine.

AP reports Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov, who attended the conference in Denmark’s capital, told journalists that acquiring more fighter planes is the country’s priority right now.

“In the first stage, we need fighters. After that, demining,” Reznikov said.

The call comes after five and a half months of fighting and as main donor nations grapple with financial problems of their own with rising inflation cutting into budgets and discretionary spending power of governments and consumers alike.

As working class Americans struggle to afford groceries, gas, and even find baby formula to feed their children, Joe Biden has sent $40,000,000,000.00 the U.S. does not have to Ukraine. https://t.co/ugwxKxBpDe

Denmark co-hosted the daylong conference in Copenhagen with Britain and Ukraine. The AP report outlines British Defense Secretary Ben Wallace said the goal of the event was securing “concrete steps.”

He announced Britain will send more multiple launch rocket systems and guided missiles to Ukraine to help it resist Russia’s invasion.

Before the conference started, the Danish government said it would give Ukraine an extra 820 million kroner ($113 million), which would bring Denmark’s total contribution to the war effort to more than 3 billion kroner ($413 million).

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen called it “a huge donation.”

The latest call for funds follows a conference held last month in Warsaw that received pledges for $6.5 billion more in humanitarian aid that sought to deliver Ukrainians urgent help while still planning for the country’s post-war reconstruction.

The U.S. alone has committed to giving Ukraine close to $40 billion in financial support, as Breitbart News reported .

As part of those millions in funds, Ukrainians will be provided with medical services, housing money, and “culturally and linguistically appropriate services.”

Game companies have a gangbusters second quarter

Korean game companies reported strong second quarter earnings thanks to the popularity of mobile games.

Krafton, Korea’s largest game company by market cap, reported a consensus-beating 194 billion won ($149.1 million) in net in the April-to-June period, up 37 percent on year. Revenue came in at 423.7 billion won, down 7.8 percent compared to the year before.

Mobile games made up 75 percent of revenue, including PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG) Mobile, PUBG Mobile India and PUBG: New State, although no new games were released. PUBG is an online first-person shooting (FPS) game franchise where 100 players kill each other on an island to become the last standing.

PUBG Mobile and PUBG: New State kept strong sales thanks to collaborations, such as with K-pop girl group Blackpink, and frequent updates to game content.

However, the company’s third-quarter earnings may take a blow as PUBG India has been blocked from the Indian mobile app market since July 28. Local authorities cited security concerns, but media reports pointed to Krafton’s investment from China’s Tencent as the cause, amid political tensions building between India and China over a border conflict.

“We understand and respect the concerns of the Indian government,” chief financial officer Bae Dong-geun said during a conference call Thursday. “We are sincerely working with local authorities so that Indian users may enjoy PUGB Mobile India again, after strict monitoring of our data security standards.”

Lineage W from NCSoft [NCSOFT]

NCSoft reported a 26-percent rise in net in the second quarter. Net profit came in at 118.7 billion won, inching above the 115.7-billion-won consensus compiled by FnGuide. Revenue was 629.3 billion won, up 17 percent on year but slightly under the 638.4-billion-won consensus.

Despite the absence of a new game this year, NCSoft performed well thanks to the continued success of Lineage W, its mobile massively-multiplayer online roleplaying game (MMORPG) released last November.

Mobile games’ revenues were 35 percent higher than the previous year. Lineage W grossed 223.6 billion won, Lineage M 141.2 billion and Lineage 2M 96.2 billion won.

“Total revenues for Lineage W have surpassed 1 trillion won,” said Lee Jang-wook, head of the investor relations team at NCSoft, during a conference call Friday. “It is seeing fewer users, as is customary for all games, but related figures seem to stay strong and we hope to see continued success into the latter half of the year.”

Tokyo-listed Nexon also had a good second quarter, with a 65-billion-yen ($487.7 million) net profit that jumped 176 percent compared to the same period last year. Revenue rose 50 percent on year, coming in at 175.1 billion yen.

Nexon launched Dungeon&Fighter Mobile in Korea on March 24 and saw 1.2 million pre-downloads on Google and Apple’s app stores before its release, the highest for a mobile game released by Nexon.

It was initially planned for a Chinese release on Aug. 12, but that was postponed for a system upgrade to “meet the Chinese government’s guidelines,” according to Nexon. A release date has not been set yet.

The company will release HIT2, a massively-multiplayer online roleplaying game (MMORPG), on Aug. 25.

“We expect revenue in Korea to significantly increase year-over-year,” the company wrote in a report on Aug. 9 on its outlook for the third quarter. “We anticipate significant contributions from Dungeon&Fighter Mobile and HIT2, which is scheduled to launch on Aug. 25.”

Pearl Abyss reported a 1,042.9 percent on-year surge in net profit, coming in a 32 billion won in the second quarter. Revenue rose 6 percent to 94 billion won.

The company started publishing its MMORPG Black Desert in some countries without a local publisher since 2017, but took full charge of the global publishing during the second quarter. That led to a 300-percent in June compared to May, according to the company.

Com2uS reported 14.9 billion won in net profit, 42.4 percent higher than the second quarter last year. The company’s mobile game Summoners War: Sky Arena hit new daily record revenue in April, proving its continued success eight years into its release, according to the company.

Meanwhile, Netmarble continued its losing streak for the second quarter this year. The publisher lost 120.5 billion won from April to June, coming in far below the 64.5-billion-won market consensus. In the second quarter last year, Netmarble reported a net profit of 48.2 billion.

Revenue was 660.6 billion won, up 14.4 percent on year but lower than the 668.9 billion won analysts expected.

The loss was mainly due to marketing expenses for new games that were not recovered due to a disappointing reception by players. Netmarble released A3: Still Alive, Cross Worlds and Golden Bros this year.

“The release of much-anticipated games were postponed and games that were released underperformed, leading to two consecutive quarters of low results,” said CEO Kwon Young-sik in a press release. “We expect a gradual improvement of our earnings as Seven Knights Revolution was well received in the local market and the development of other games are smoothly under way.”

Tales of freedom by the veterans

August 12, 2022 by www.thehindu.com Leave a Comment

“I did some unthinkable things in order to revolt against the British,” recalled 101-year-old freedom fighter H. Nagabhushana Rao. He is one of the oldest freedom fighters alive in the State and is also amongst those who were recently identified by the government to be honoured on the occasion of ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’.

In conversation with The Hindu , three freedom fighters shared some interesting stories, ranging from cutting off communication wires to their days in jails.

Mr. Rao mentioned that he joined the freedom movement when he was in high school and said he cut telegram wires, destroyed post boxes, dug up roads, among many other things to cut off communication between British officials. He also said that he stopped people from entering offices, colleges, and factories by laying on the doorways and asking people to step on him if they had to go in.

When asked what freedom means to him, he said, “Freedom is the authority and governance over one’s own self”. He is known to be extremely disciplined and helpful amongst his family and friends and he does not hesitate to stand up against what is wrong even to this day.

Halasuru-born R. Narayanappa, 97, remembered the impact the freedom struggle had on him as a young child. He said that at the age of 13, he joined his friends and played a significant role in the riot that broke out in Avenue Road against the British rule. He also helped boycott foreign goods in his school and college. He joined the Royal Indian Navy after completing his education. He spoke about how Mahatma Gandhi’s Satyagraha had a significant influence.

Upon his return from the navy, he joined the State Bank of Mysore (SBM) from where he soon quit, to answer the various calls for freedom which were being raised around him. He joined the “Quit India” movement and became a full-fledged freedom fighter. He took part in riots in Chikkaballapura’s Viduraswatta.

Like him, C.B Shakaranarayana Rao, 91, extended his support for the freedom movement from the early years of his childhood. He said that he was inspired by his father, who was a war veteran and was ordered to serve two years in World War II. He mainly took part in the boycott British movement. He studied in Sahyadri College, Shivamogga, where he actively took part in the demand for a responsible government in 1947, for which he was put behind bars for a month at the age of 18.
