Exclusive! ODI World Cup 2023: ‘Virat Kohli is a tiger, Shubman Gill will become another tiger in his presence,’ claims Anjum Chopra

September 23, 2023 by www.mykhel.com Leave a Comment

In an exclusive interview with Mykhel , the former India Women’s captain named a bunch of players who she thinks are going to make a handsome impact for their respective teams in the ten-team event which starts from October 5 in Ahmedabad, India.

Anjum Chopra names ODI World Cup 2023 players to watch out for

The cricketer-turned-commentator discussed at length about the players to watch out for in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023. Talking about the Australian team, Anjum Chopra did not even think twice before naming Steve Smith and David Warner as the two players who will leave their mark in the tournament.

Kusal Mendis was her favourite pick from Sri Lanka. The former left-hand batter also picked Pakistan captain Babar Azam and England’s Harry Brook – considered a generational talent by many and who replaced opener Jason Roy to barge into England’s World Cup 2023 squad, in her list of players to watch out for in World Cup 2023.

“Steve Smith would want to make it count. So will David Warner. Kusal Mendis, Pathum Nissanka, and even Charith Asalanka but Kusal Mendis would be their key player. Babar Azam is always there. Harry Brook is also coming into the England squad by replacing Jason Roy,” Anjum Chopra told Mykhel.

Anjum Chopra on Virat Kohli and Shubman Gill

Anjum Chopra reserved her best comments for the star India batting duo of Virat Kohli and Shubman Gill. She stated that the former India captain would be like a tiger in the home World Cup and could inspire Shubman Gill to also turn into one.

“Virat Kohli and Shubman Gill are surely going to be players to watch out for. Virat Kohli will be like a tiger. Shubman Gill will become another tiger watching Virat Kohli play like a tiger,” she said.

‘Hunger to perform in a World Cup is always there for players like Kohli, Rohit’

On being asked about her views on Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma who would most likely feature in their last ODI World Cup, Anjum Chopra became a bit nostalgic and said that playing in world cups is a different vibe and players look to put their best regardless of the number of times they have featured in the prestigious competition.

Naming Ravichandran Ashwin as an example, getting into a World Cup squad was in itself a big achievement even for the best in the business. “There is a different feel altogether to playing a World Cup. The logo and India are written on the jersey. The 50-over World Cup also comes after four years.

“Mohammed Siraj, Ishan Kishan, and Shubman Gill will be playing their first World Cup. Those who are playing their second World Cup would be looking to put up a better show than the first one,” the cricketer-turned-commentator added further.

“Those who are playing a couple of times, also get geared up for the big event. If we are thinking it’s their last, then they also must be thinking about it and looking to do well in their last World Cup. There is a special flick of a switch you get when you are playing a World Cup. Rohit Sharma has always done well in the World Cups.

“Not everyone can do that. There is Ashwin who is still not in the World Cup squad despite being number one spinner. Ask him how hard it is to get into a World Cup squad. First or last, the hunger to perform in the World Cup is always there,” she further explained.

Tamim Iqbal lashes out at BCB ‘dirty game’ after World Cup 2023: ‘I was being forced to do many things’

September 27, 2023 by www.mykhel.com Leave a Comment

Reports earlier on Tuesday, suggested that Tamim Iqbal had informed BCB about five World Cup matches keeping in mind his recurring back problem, to which Shakib Al Hasan responded by saying that he would boycott the event if BCB agreed to the former’s demands.

A Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) member told The Daily Star that Shakib Al Hasan wasn’t willing to be the captain in the World Cup 2023 as doesn’t want to take any half-fit cricketer to the marquee ICC event which kick-starts from October in India.

Notably, Tamim Iqbal was Bangladesh ODI captain until early July before he announced a shock retirement and then withdrew it 24 hours later after an interference from Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina. However, Tamim relinquished his captaincy and missed the Asia Cup 2023 to get his back injury treated.

He returned for the 3-match ODI series against New Zealand and scored 44 off 58 in the second ODI but revealed that he was still facing pain and discomfort while batting. He was rested for the third ODI on his request.

You make me face something new every day: Tamim Iqbal

A day after facing the ax, the southpaw revealed that he was being asked to bat down the order in the upcoming World Cup 2023. Tamim Iqbal also stated that the management wanted him to play just a handful of matches.

“Someone called me from the top level of the board who is very involved with our cricket. He said that if you go to the World Cup you have to play the matches by managing your (back) injury. So, you better do one thing, don’t play the first match against Afghanistan (on October 7),” Tamim said in a video message posted on his Facebook page.

“I replied that the Afghanistan match is still 12/13 days away. In 12/13 days I will be in better condition. Why shouldn’t I play? Then, he said that if you play you have to bat down the order.

“After hearing this I am shocked as I have never in my 17-year career batted down the order. I feel like I’m being forced to do many things. I said, ‘Look, if you have such thoughts then don’t send me. I don’t want to be in this mess. I don’t want to be part of this dirty game. You make me face something new every day. I don’t want to stay here’,” he added.

‘Medical team had confidence in my fitness’

Further, Tamim Iqbal asserted that he was ready to head into the world cup with a lot of confidence after scoring 44 runs in his comeback ODI match against New Zealand. He added that the medical team was also backing him to go out all guns blazing in the World Cup 2023 which kick starts from October 5. Bangladesh are scheduled to play their first match against Afghanistan on October 7.

“I was very happy after that game, 44 is not a big score but I was very happy at the way I batted. I felt confident,” he said.

“The medical department believed that if I was rested and played the second warm-up match (against England) on October 2, I would get enough time (to prepare) ahead of the first World Cup match.

“I am sure chief selector Minhajul Abedin also denied the report that I told him that I would play five matches in the World Cup,” he added.

Women’s U-19 T20 World Cup: Shweta Sehrawat stood out in Indian team, says Anjum Chopra

January 30, 2023 by www.mykhel.com Leave a Comment

Shweta Sehrawat scored 297 runs in the tournament at an average of 99 while striking at a rate of 139.43.

“Shweta Sehrawat is my highest and the top-ranked player in this Indian team,” Chopra said on JioCinema’s new daily show #Aakashvani. “She is the one who has stood out and given stand-out performances in this World Cup. She nearly missed the Player of the series. In fact, she is the highest run-getter in this entire world cup and she has won three matches and also won the player of the match.”

Women’s U-19 T20 World Cup: Parshavi Chopra, Archana Devi impressed too

Anjum Chopra also rated leg spinner Parshavi Chopra, Archana Devi among other finds of the season. Parshavi was second highest-wicket taker this tournament with 11 wickets in six games.

Bulk of her wickets came at the business end of the tournament. She finished with a spell of 4/5 against Sri Lanka in the Super Six and then bowled another impressive 3/20 in the semi-final against Sri Lanka. In the final against England, she bowled a 2/13.

“Parshavi Chopra is a leg spinner, again very well done by her by giving the limited performances and the way she bowled. So, she will be my second pick and Archana Devi, a young budding off-spinner who also bats well.

“So, according to me these three players Archana Devi, Parshavi Chopra and right on top Shweta Sehrawat have been outstanding performers in this tournament,” said Anjum.

Afghanistan pace bowler Naveen-ul-Haq is all set retire from ODIs after the forthcoming ICC World Cup in India. starting on October 5. The right-arm quick is back in the ODI side after a gap of two years .

Naveen missed the two-match T20I series against Bangladesh due to knee injury and went to England to have a minor knee operation but the pace bowler told Cricbuzz on Wednesday (September 27) that he is planning to quit ODIs on the advice of a physician as that is the only way to prolong his career.

“I’ll be retiring from ODI cricket after this World Cup,” Naveen told Cricbuzz. “Because of the workload and recent injuries that I have came across that’s (quit longer format cricket and concentrate on shorter format cricket) what I have been advised by my doctors & physiotherapist,” he said.

“To prolong my career I have to leave the longer format and concentrate on T20 cricket,” he said. “Luckily I have been declared fit to play in the World Cup but had been advised to cut down the entire longer-format cricket due to the injury that I have got and focus on shorter formats, and that is down to managing workload,” he added.

Naveen is already considered a hot commodity in franchise-based cricket and left his mark for Lucknow Super Giants in the last edition of Indian Premier League for Lucknow Super Giants, with 11 wickets in 8 matches.
