Woman ‘so angry’ that her step-son overstayed his welcome praised online

August 16, 2022 by www.newsweek.com Leave a Comment

A woman who was asked to look after her stepson because his mom “ended up staying out” for a “piss up” the night before received a storm of support from users on Mumsnet, the U.K.-based online forum.

In a viral post shared by user CottonCandy11 on Mumsnet’s Am I Being Unreasonable (AIBU) forum, where it received 658 comments, the woman said her stepson was due to be back with his mom after spending three nights with the user and her husband.

But his mother asked whether her son could stay an extra night as “she had been invited out to something.”

The original poster said she was “so angry” and is refusing to miss out on a day out with her son.

According to the 2019 American Community Survey (ACS) published by the U.S. Census Bureau , there are estimated to be nearly 2.4 million stepchildren under the age of 18 in the country.

Stepfamilies face various unique stressors, such as co-parental conflict and stepparenting issues, as noted in a March 2017 study published in the peer-reviewed journal Family Process .

The study stated: “Children and adolescents who are exposed to interparental conflict are more likely to perceive it as threatening to their well-being or that of the family, which in turn is a key risk factor for internalizing problems.”

According to the American Psychological Association (APA) , the most challenging element of stepfamily life is parenting. “Under the best conditions, it may take two to four years for a new stepfamily to adjust to living together,” the APA says.

The original poster in the latest Mumsnet post agreed to her stepson’s additional stayover on the “very strict proviso” that his mom picks him up at 8 a.m. the next morning, as the user had a day out planned with her 4-year-old son.

However, the mom messaged the user’s husband “saying sorry [that] she won’t be here for 8 as she ended up staying out so won’t be home yet until about 11.”

The original poster said her stepson’s mom and partner have a baby, so he’s at home with the child. Her stepson also has a house key if the partner is asleep and can’t let him in.

“I’m seriously minded to go and drop him off with her partner. She’ll be furious but I literally couldn’t give a s**t about what she thinks now, she cares about no one else whatsoever. It’s always been the same, hers are the only plans that matter.

“But I’m not missing my day with my son, I’ve been looking forward to it and I’m not having him and me miss out because she wanted to go on a piss up last night and didn’t get home,” the user added.

Several Mumsnet users sided with the original poster, stating the stepson’s “irresponsible” mom is taking the “absolute piss.”

One user said: “Yanbu [you are not being unreasonable], that will firmly send the message across that you aren’t her skivvy. How irresponsible of her. If her dp [dear partner] is there at home, go drop him off.”

Another agreed, stating: “Drop him off. The partner is there – why would she be furious? You should be furious, she has no right to be.”

A third asked: “So you are expected to look after their son but her partner isn’t? Honestly some people just take the absolute piss. I would be beyond livid and would drop him home.”

While another questioned: “If she has a partner at home with their child why couldn’t he have gone back home last night anyway?…I’d drop him back home and leave him with his mom’s partner/step dad.”

Some users advised the original poster should tread carefully for the safety of her stepson.

One said: “I don’t know if I would just go and drop him off, I am in two minds about that. I might be more inclined to deal with it this time, but then I would absolutely refuse to help out again.”

Another asked whether there are any “safety concerns” with her partner and stepson. “Just because he’s looking after their baby doesn’t mean your DSS [dear stepson] is safe with him and as a pp [previous poster] said be mindful of how you handle the situation in front of the boy.”

When another posed the same question, the original poster said: “Yeah he’s fine. He’s done the odd thing in the past but very very rarely. I suspect he’s told her she’s not dumping DSS on him so she can go out and things in the past so now she never asks him.”

Pioneering family remember 180 years in Nelson

August 12, 2022 by www.stuff.co.nz Leave a Comment

It’s 180 years since the Redwoods of Waimea, Nelson, and Marlborough arrived in NZ.

The George Fyfe departed Gravesend, England in 1842 with Henry Redwood from Staffordshire, his wife Mary and nine of their children.

Henry Jr, Ann, Martha, Elizabeth, Mary, Charles, Thomas, Francis, and George. The journey was at times rough and sadly four-month-old George, died at sea.

Accompanying them was Joseph Ward, a surveyor who had recently married Martha.

READ MORE: Mysterious past for pioneering councillor Hard-working immigrants laid foundations for settlements

Within the next three years or so, Mary married Joseph Greaves, a solicitor. Ann married Cyrus Goulter, a surveyor. Elizabeth married Edward Bolton, a farmer at Waimea West. Many of these families made their homes in Marlborough.

The New Zealand Company had organised a settlement at Wellington and were now establishing one at Nelson.

Henry bought a one acre town section and a 50 acre rural section for £300 pounds before they left England. The 50 acres was on the Waimea Plain, west of the Waimea River.

When they arrived in December 1842, Henry, along with his older children and Joseph Ward, set about erecting a 60ft long tent from canvas and timber he bought from the George Fyfe’s captain.

This was to be their home for six months while they built a peasey house out of shingle and clay.

This was a warm and noble home which they called Stafford Place. The house lasted 86 years, until succumbing to the rigours of the Murchison earthquake in 1929.

A new gable-styled home was built in 1866 which survives today in its grandeur.

Despite doing this building, they still found time to develop their land from native bush into a cropping and pastoral farm.

Henry built himself a small flour mill. He was well known in Nelson for his happy singing and whistling as he went about his deliveries of flour.

Along with Henry Jr, they set up a butchery on their town section, on the corner of Trafalgar and Bridge streets, supplying the market with beef, mutton and butter.

This hard-working family were soon able to branch out with Charles and Thomas moving over to Marlborough. With their father, they established farming ventures at Riverlands, The Bluffs (later called The Vernon Run), the Wither Hills, Omaka, and behind Woodbourne.

Henry Jr, with his sons Joseph and Fred, took up land at Spring Creek, growing crops, mostly wheat, very successfully.

They set up a flour mill (Redwood Brothers) on the creek in 1870, shifted it to the Ōpaoa River in Blenheim in 1905, lasting until 1958.

The Redwoods were innovative, being one of the first to introduce a roller system and other modern machinery to their flour mill. Their system was described as ‘could not be bettered in Europe’. They were also the first to use a steam plough and a threshing machine.

Henry Jr was not only a hard-working farmer, butcher and miller, he introduced several thoroughbred mares and stallions. He is known to this day as ‘Father of the New Zealand Turf’.

He set up horse training stables at Waimea West and then Riccarton in Christchurch, which he called Chokebore Lodge.

He was known for his sternness to his stable boys and his kindness to his horses.

He was also Australasian pigeon shooting champion. He was elected to both the Nelson and Marlborough Provincial Councils at various times.

Charles farmed at Riverlands near Blenheim, occupying a Cob Cottage which is still there, with heritage status. He established a successful malthouse and tried his hand in several ventures, not all successful.

He was one of those instrumental in establishing a copper mine on D’Urville Island and sending frozen meat to England, but neither venture lasted more than a few years.

He took his family to Queensland in 1896.

Thomas drove 2000 sheep over from Nelson via Top House, to stock the Redwood pastoral runs being established in Marlborough. He managed large farms there along with his father’s Vernon Run. He then bought Burleigh, which he farmed for 20 years.

After being forced to retire by a serious accident he became active serving on provincial councils and administration in racing. He was successful with his horses.

Martha’s husband Joseph Ward, was a surveyor. They married just before departing England in 1842.

Initially, he took up farming with his father-in-law at Waimea and did some surveying and tutoring of the younger Redwoods. Martha and Joseph had 12 children.

He and his brother-in-law, Cyrus Goulter, surveyed Picton, and he assisted in much of the survey of the Wairau.

He became a pastoralist, taking up extensive runs in the Clarence Valley which amounted to almost 80,000 acres of leasehold and 16,670 acres of freehold. However, he had serious problems with the horrible sheep disease called ‘scab’ and lost the runs.

He, along with Martha, managed to retain the Brookby and Blythfield properties near Blenheim.

He was active in the Nelson and Marlborough provincial councils, and for a short time represented Wairau in the House of Representatives.

He was forthright and somewhat rigid, conservative in his politics, a fluent orator and had a ready wit.

Ann’s husband, Cyrus Goulter, was a surveyor and did some early surveys at Nelson in 1841. Along with Joseph Ward and William Budge, he did much of the surveying of the Wairau Plain. He took up land in the Omaka Valley in 1848 and became well known for producing quality sheep and horses.

He and his descendants farmed the renowned Hawkesbury Merino Stud established with Tasmanian merino bloodlines.

Cyrus was active in politics being Speaker of the House, Provincial Treasurer, and Commissioner of Crown Lands.

Elizabeth’s husband, Edward Bolton who was a farmer/grazier on the Waimea Plain, was a cheerful fellow who was supportive of the wider Redwood ventures. He farmed for Constantine Dillon.

Sadly, Mary and her four-month-old daughter died the year after Mary and Joseph Greaves were married. Joseph went back to England soon after.

The most famous Redwood was the youngest son, Francis.

He trained to be a priest in France and after his ordination, served in Ireland and France, returning to New Zealand in 1874.

He became Bishop for the Wellington Diocese in 1874 and Archbishop in 1895. He was the youngest Bishop in the world at 34 years and became the oldest Bishop in the world at 95 years, a formidable 61 years of being a very popular and constructive man.

During his time as Bishop, the Catholic Church in New Zealand grew from a missionary church to an established institution.

He was highly respected by both Catholics and non-Catholics alike, for his balanced opinions and the way he conducted himself.

He was an eloquent speaker from the pulpit and the stage. His popularity was shown at his 50th jubilee celebration which saw the largest religious parade ever seen through Wellington streets, with every vantage point occupied.

Such is the story of an industrious pioneering family who contributed wherever they went.

  • The family are having a reunion at Stafford Place, Waimea West, on the Saturday and Sunday of Labour weekend this October 2022, celebrating 180 years since the Redwoods arrived in NZ.
  • All descendants are most welcome to attend. If interested, contact Tim Redwood at [email protected]

Got to know of convicts’ release through media, says Bilkis Bano’s husband; convict talks of starting a new life

August 16, 2022 by economictimes.indiatimes.com Leave a Comment

Synopsis

After release from the Godhra jail on Monday, the 11 convicts, who were also charged with killing the pregnant Muslim woman’s three-year-old daughter, were welcomed with sweets and garlands outside the jail. Bilkis Bano was 21 years old and five months pregnant when she was raped while fleeing the violence that broke out post the Sabarmati train incident in Godhra.

A day after 11 convicts sentenced to life imprisonment for Bilkis Bano ‘s gang rape and murder of seven of her family during the 2002 Gujarat riots walked out of jail, her husband said he came to know of their release from the media.

After their release from the Godhra jail on Monday, the convicts, who were also charged with killing the pregnant Muslim woman’s three-year-old daughter, were welcomed with sweets and garlands outside the jail.

“We were surprised to know that the convicts have been released,” Bilkis Bano ‘s husband Yakub Rasul told PTI.

Bilkis Bano was 21 years old and five months pregnant when she was raped while fleeing the violence that broke out post the Sabarmati train incident in Godhra.

“We don’t know when the convicts processed their application and which ruling the state government took into consideration. We never received any kind of notice,” Rasul said. Rasul said the Gujarat government had paid the family a compensation of Rs 50 lakh as directed by the Supreme Court , but has yet to provide a job or a house as directed by the apex court. Rasul said he lives virtually in hiding with his wife and five sons, the eldest one 20 years old.

A special CBI court in Mumbai in 2008 sentenced the 11 accused to life imprisonment on the charge of gang rape and murder of seven members of Bilkis Bano’s family. Their conviction was later upheld by the Bombay High Court.

The 11 convicts who were granted premature release are Jaswantbhai Nai, Govindbhai Nai, Shailesh Bhatt, Radheshyam Shah, Bipin Chandra Joshi, Kesarbhai Vohania, Pradeep Mordhiya, Bakabhai Vohania, Rajubhai Soni, Mitesh Bhatt, and Ramesh Chandana.

Radheshyam Shah, the convict whose plea for premature release paved the way for all the 11 life sentence convicts to walk out of jail, said he feels happy to be released. “The Gujarat government has released us as per the order of the Supreme Court. I feel glad to be out as I will be able to meet my family members and begin a new life,” he said. “We were convicted and lodged in jail. When I was not released after completing 14 years in jail, I approached the Supreme Court for remission. The apex court directed the Gujarat government to take a decision, after which we were released,” he said.

The convicts were released on Monday under the Gujarat government’s remission policy after they completed more than 15 years in jail.

All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi over their release. In his Independence Day speech, Modi had asked Indians to take a pledge not to do anything that lowers the dignity of women, Owaisi said. “He said something about supporting “Nari Shakti”. Gujarat BJP govt released criminals convicted of gang rape on the same day. The message is clear,” Owaisi tweeted.

Bollywood diva Bipasha Basu is all set to welcome her first child with actor-husband Karan Singh Grover .

The actress took to social media on Tuesday to announce that she was expecting amid pregnancy reports. The media had reported that the 43-year-old was expecting after pictures shared by her from an Eid party showed her baby bump.

Confirming all rumours, Basu shared two pictures from her pregnancy photoshoot, flaunting her baby bump. The couple were twinning in crisp white shirts.

In her lengthy post, the ‘Raaz’ star called her soon-to-be-born baby a ‘creation manifested’ by the couple’s love.

“A new time, a new phase, a new light adds another unique shade to our prism of life. Making us a little more whole than we used to be. We began this life individually and then we met each other and from then we were two.
