COVID-19 school learning loss may lead to $70K less income, study shows

FOX Business correspondent Lydia Hu has the latest on the impact of the COVID-19 school closures on ‘America’s Newsroom.’

Kids in the U.S. are more than 100 times less likely to die from COVID than adults, according to a new study.

The study, published by the JAMA Network of medical journals, came after students suffered historic learning loss due to school closures during the COVID pandemic — a loss in academic progress whose effects may be felt for years to come.

Children aged 0-19 died from COVID at a rate of 1 per 100,000 from August 2021 through July 2022, the study found. There were 821 COVID deaths — meaning cases when COVID was the underlying cause of death — for this age range during the 12-month period.

Specifically, COVID death rates in infants younger than 1 year were 4.3 deaths per 100,000, 0.6 per 100,000 in children aged 1 to 4 years, 0.4 per 100,000 in children aged 5 to 9 years, 0.5 per 100,000 in children aged 10 to 14 years, and 1.8 per 100,000 in those aged 15 to 19 years.

By comparison, there were more than 360,000 total COVID deaths in the U.S. in this time. This means, according to the study, that people died from COVID at a rate of 109 per 100,000, making kids more than a hundred times less likely to die from the virus than adults.

Meanwhile, the Johns Hopkins Coronavirus Resource Center released data on Sunday showing COVID has led to 337 deaths per 100,000 people in the U.S. The JAWA study used different methodology than Johns Hopkins, but both datasets suggest COVID is much less deadly for kids than for the overall population.

This suggestion was bolstered by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which last week released data showing children account for less than 0.15% of all COVID deaths.

Still, COVID ranked eighth among all causes of death for children and young people aged 0 to 19 in the U.S. and fifth in disease-related causes of deaths — excluding unintentional injuries, assault, and suicide.

Unintentional injuries accounted for 18.4% of child deaths and 6.8% were from suicide, according to the JAWA Network study. About 6.9% were from assault.

US MATH, READING TEST SCORES PLUNGE FOR STUDENTS ACROSS COUNTRY FOLLOWING COVID-19 PANDEMIC

COVID accounted for 2% of all deaths in children, meaning kids are over nine times more likely to die in an accident and over three times more likely to die from assault or suicide than from COVID.

The new study comes as students in the U.S. are struggling to deal with the effects of learning loss suffered from school closures during the pandemic.

The Education Department’s National Assessment of Educational Progress, known as the nation’s report card, which tests a broad sampling of fourth and eighth graders, was released in October and showed the “largest score declines” since the federal government began tracking these metrics in 1990.

Math and reading scores took major hits nationwide, especially among the country’s most vulnerable students. Black and Hispanic students, for example, experienced steeper declines than white and Asian peers in fourth-grade math after already starting out behind.

Between 2019, the results of the last National Assessment of Educational Progress, and 2022, the number of black students in public schools performing “below basic” in fourth-grade math on the national assessment spiked from 35% to 46%. The share of Hispanics rose from 27% to 37%. The share of whites scoring at the lowest performance level only increased from 12% to 15%.

LEARNING LOSS FROM COVID LOCKDOWNS CAUSED ‘UNMITIGATED DISASTER’ PARTICULARLY IN STUDENT BEHAVIOR: EXPERTS

Many categories saw significant declines in academic performance across the board, regardless of race. But overall, performance gaps between white students and their black and Hispanic peers widened since 2019.

More broadly, fourth-graders who were in the bottom 25th percentile in both math and reading lost more ground compared with students at the top of their class, leaving these low-performing students further behind.

Students with less resources at home especially struggled. Only half of fourth graders who were low-performing in math said they had access to a computer at all times during the 2020-2021 school year, compared with 80% of high-performing students, according to a survey included in the assessment. Similarly, 70% of low performers said they had a quiet place to work at least some of the time, compared with 90% for high performers.

The new national figures coincided with California releasing state-specific data showing two out of three California students didn’t meet state math standards and more than half didn’t meet English standards on state assessments taken in the spring, further highlighting the toll that school closures during the pandemic took on student learning.

The test results were more devastating for low-income and minority students. Indeed, 84% of black students and 79% of Hispanic and low-income students didn’t meet state math standards this past year.

HIGH-POVERTY SCHOOL DISTRICTS SUFFERED MORE LEARNING LOSS DURING COVID PANDEMIC, ACCORDING TO STUDY

Several other data sets over the last two years have found similar results showing low-income and minority students have been hit especially hard by school closures.

As early as July 2021, McKinsey & Co., a leading consulting firm, released a report that detailed how children in low-income schools ended the school year on average seven months behind in math and six months behind in reading.

In majority Black schools, students ended the year six months behind in both math and reading on average, according to the report. Their peers in high-income and majority white schools, meanwhile, fared better, although they still lost several months of learning due to the shutdowns.

McKinsey forecast that “pandemic-related unfinished learning” could reduce lifetime earnings for K–12 students and create a potential annual GDP loss of hundreds of billions of dollars.

More recently, a Stanford University study found that students enrolled in schools during pandemic restrictions will face an average of a 2% to 9% drop in lifetime earnings, resulting in states facing a 0.6% to 2.9% drop in total GDP.

PANDEMIC LEARNING LOSS COULD COST STUDENTS THOUSANDS IN INCOME OVER THEIR LIFETIME: STUDY

“At the extreme, California is estimated to have lost $1.3 trillion because of learning losses during the pandemic,” wrote the study’s author, Eric Hanushek. “These losses are permanent unless a state’s schools can get better than their pre-pandemic levels.”

Hanushek argued there’s “overwhelming evidence that students in school during the closure period and during the subsequent adjustments to the pandemic are achieving at significantly lower levels than would have been expected without the pandemic.”

The study analyzed National Assessment of Educational Progress data and found that between 2019 and 2022, test scores in math and English dropped an average of eight points across the country. The drop came after nearly two decades of progress, the study noted, erasing all the gains in test scores made between 2000 and 2019.

As early as 2020, some medical experts publicly opposed school closures , arguing COVID was significantly more deadly for the old and infirm than younger people. However, Sweden was the only major Western country to keep schools open for kids 15 and younger throughout the pandemic. The New England Journal of Medicine published an analysis of the health effects on Swedish kids.

“Despite Sweden’s having kept schools and preschools open, we found a low incidence of severe COVID-19 among schoolchildren and children of preschool age during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic,” the 2021 study stated . “Among the 1.95 million children who were 1 to 16 years of age, 15 children had Covid-19, MIS-C, or both conditions and were admitted to an ICU, which is equal to 1 child in 130,000.”

The study also found that few school teachers had to receive intensive care for COVID.

In the U.S., schools are now open, but some are reinstituting pandemic-era protocols. Schools in Michigan and Massachusetts, for example, recently put mask mandates in place for both staff and students, following in the footsteps of districts in New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

Iain Lee reflects on saving suicidal man live on air: ‘I wasn’t going to let him die’

March 17, 2020 by metro.co.uk Leave a Comment

Iain Lee has recalled saving a suicidal man’s life live on air, saying he ‘just wasn’t going to let him die’.

Back in December 2018, the broadcaster was presenting his talkRADIO show The Late Night Alternative alongside producer Katherine Boyle, when a listener named Chris called in to the show.

Chris, who was slurring, explained he had post traumatic stress disorder and had taken an overdose.

Iain kept him on the line for 30 minutes as they attempted to locate him, after discovering he was near a nightclub in Plymouth.

Lee told him: ‘I’ll tell you what Chris, I don’t want you to die tonight, man, and I need to know what street you’re on. I want you to get through tonight and chat to me tomorrow, when you haven’t got a load of drugs in you.

‘I don’t want you to die tonight because I love you. I love you, brother. I love you.’

Thankfully, the police located Chris and he was brought to safety. The incredible moment was later voted radio moment of the year by the public at the Audio and Radio Industry Awards (Arias).

Speaking to Radio Times, Iain said that while he hasn’t listened to the call back, he can still remember the adrenaline he felt.

‘If possible, I just wasn’t going to let him die – not on my watch,’ the 46-year-old said. ‘So a lot of it was adrenaline. Everything else sort of disappeared.’

When the police found Chris and the call ended, Iain said he burst into tears, explaining: ‘That’s when it hit me – that this poor man, so lost and so desperate, chose us.

‘I felt humble. I felt scared. I felt protective of my kids. You know, everything. It was really emotional.’

Iain chose to keep Chris live on air during the harrowing phone call, which went on for a half an hour as Katherine called an ambulance.

And the I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! star, who has been open about his own mental health and battle with depression , defends not cutting to ads.

He said: ‘I could have said, “OK, we’ll go to some adverts now and I’ll talk to you off air,” but I’m glad I didn’t, because just that 30 seconds of going into the next studio, he could have put the phone down.

‘And throughout the conversation, I was trying to get him to say what he could see from where he was, and that was great, because people were texting saying, ‘“ know Plymouth. It sounds like he’s here.” And with their help, we managed to locate him.’

Incredibly, last week, a similar incident occurred on Lee’s late night phone-in show, after a devoted listener named Mark called in and said that he had taken tablets.

Iain managed to get Mark to give his producer his address so they could send an ambulance to his home.

After his show, which finished at 1am, Iain tweeted: ‘Just got off the phone to Mark. He’s given me permission to say he’s OK.

‘Thanks for the love you’ve sent him. I’ve told him to text me tomorrow.’

Iain’s full interview is available in the new issue of Radio Times, out today.

The Big Holiday Depression Myth

November 21, 2007 by www.livescience.com Leave a Comment

At some point during this holiday season—maybe as you’re rushing to the corner store for more turkey stuffing, or while at a Christmas Eve sale wrestling the last Xbox 360 away from a middle-aged mom—you will be tired, stressed and depressed.

Most people have heard the bit of folk wisdom about how depression and suicide increase during the last two months of the year. The holidays can be stressful, no doubt about it: the crowds, the hassles, the cold weather, those annoying relatives you thankfully see only once a year.

And, of course, there’s seasonal affective disorder , perhaps better known by its apt acronym SAD. SAD is a mood disorder that strikes some people during the winter months, causing them to become depressed or lethargic. The disorder is not fully understood but thought to be caused by the decrease in sunlight during winter months.

While stress levels may increase, do suicide rates ? After all, there are plenty of stressors throughout the rest of the year as well.

Actually there’s no evidence that suicide rates spike in December; in fact they drop slightly.

A 1987 study by researchers David P. Phillips and John S. Wills found that about 100 fewer suicides occur on holidays than other days of the year. Part of the reason may be that while holidays are stressful, they are also a time when friends and family come together, offering emotional and social support to troubled individuals.

It’s not all good news, though.

On average, people are slightly more likely to die during the holiday season. While this may seem ominous and mysterious, there is a logical explanation. This effect occurs because during Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s, people engage more in two activities that increase their chances of death: drinking liquor and traveling. Alcohol consumption is linked to both higher homicide rates and more vehicle accidents.

So cheer up! With moderation and common sense, odds are you’ll make it through another holiday season.

‘Death row’s most hated’ killer wanted child star strapped to his lap in electric chair

February 6, 2023 by www.dailystar.co.uk Leave a Comment

A sick child murderer dubbed the “most hated man on death row” gloating about killing two young boys and even tried to involve a child actor in his final moments on Earth.

No man has been more despised on death row than Arthur Frederick Goode, who was put to death by electrocution on April 5, 1984 after his heinous crimes were uncovered.

However, before being sent to the chair, he had one disgusting last request.

READ MORE: Heir to millions ‘beheaded by cannibal tribe who ate his brains’ as revenge for murders

He had a fixation with the child actor Ricky Schroder, 13, who came to fame after starring in Franco Zeffirelli’s The Champ in 1979.

With a smile, he told the Baltimore Sun: “I want Ricky Schroder to sit on my lap when I am strapped into the electric chair.”

During the interview, Goode, 29, joked with reporters and showed no remorse for the killing of the young boys.

He added: “There’s nothing wrong with me. It’s the damn people in society who are prejudiced against paedophilia.”

Goode wrote countless letters to school teachers seeking children as pen pals.

He also reached out to the parents of the boys he murdered boasting of his crimes.

On March 5, 1976, the sicko strangled nine-year-old Jason VerDow by putting a belt around his neck and swinging him through the air.

Goode said: “I told him he was going to die and described how I would kill him.

“I asked him if he had any last words and he said, ‘I love you’ and then I strangled him.”

A few weeks later, Goode picked up 11-year-old Kenny Dawson and friend Billy Arthes and took them on a bus to Tysons Corner, Virginia.

He forced Kenny to undress in a forest, sexually assaulted him and then strangled him with a belt in front of a terrified Billy.

That same week, a woman in Falls Church recognized Billy from news photos and called the police, resulting in Goode’s arrest and Billy’s rescue.

At his trial in Fairfax County, Goode told the presiding judge, “If I ever get my hands on another boy, especially a sexy little boy, he will never make it home.”

His lack of remorse was even more startling, as he said he was “proud” of his horrific acts.

Goode told the Baltimore Sun: “I feel proud I killed those two kids knowing that society will never let me have sex with kids again. At least I can pay them back.”

The death row guards hated Goode as much as the inmates did.

It was reported that he was always asking them if they had young sons at home.

Eventually, after the inmates signed a petition demanding that Goode be moved off the row, he was relocated to the isolation cells of Q-wing.

There, he continued to write rambling letters about the joys of paedophilia.

His last words before being put to death were “I have remorse for the two boys I murdered. But it’s hard for me to show it”.

For his last meal, Goode had steak, corn, broccoli and cookies.

Man Who Identifies as a Woman Elected to Lead Democrat Women’s Group in Rhode Island

February 6, 2023 by www.breitbart.com Leave a Comment

A 75-year-old man who identifies as a woman recently won an election to become the chair of the Rhode Island Democratic Women’s Caucus.

The Rev. Donnie Anderson won an uncontested race to become the leader of the Democrat women’s group despite not being a woman.

When running for the position, Anderson told the group “If you choose me to be your next executive, you will make a statement to the world about my community.” He added “I don’t want you to vote for me because I am transgender,” going on to say, “Please don’t do that. And I hope you won’t vote against me because I am transgender either.”

“ There are young people and adults who live so deeply in the shadows they are almost unknown, because they don’t see people like them in public positions,” Anderson remarked when making his pitch.

Political writer and strategist Natasha Chart spoke to Breitbart News about the situation, remarking that “it’s always sad when yet another women’s group is pressured into letting a transvestite take over senior leadership, out of fear they’ll be called bigots for not pretending to think he’s a woman.”

Chart also went on to ask, “ Where are all the adults? I remember wanting the older generation to loosen up a bit when I was a teen, but this generation of older people needs to get some backbone.”

Anderson, who currently works as a pastor at Pilgrim United Church of Christ in New Bedford, Massachusetts, has now outlined the group’s priorities for this year. The newly elected chair of the Rhode Island Democratic Women’s Caucus noted his support for gender ideology in schools and his opposition to the movement for parental rights.

When the Independent Women’s Network hosted a panel discussion at Cranston Public Library titled “What Your Kids Learn About Gender in School,” Anderson spoke at a pro-trans protest .

During his speech, he asserted that “there is a limit to free speech” before warning that those attending the Independent Women’s Forum event were “recruiting people to be part of legislative efforts that will make it harder for our children to realize who they are and be who they are.” As a result of these efforts from the right, “children are going to die,” Anderson alleged.

Derek R. Henkle, AFP/Getty Images

Chart also told Breitbart News that “it takes a lot of nerve to be a 75-year-old grandfather campaigning to sterilize young children on the basis of unsubstantiated suicide threats.”

Anderson has since defended the presence of gender ideology in schools, saying recently, “There are resources for help, but these people want to take the help away.” He even charged, “It’s like saying there’s someone out there drowning and someone’s ready to throw in a life preserver and they’re saying, ‘No, let’s make a rule: You can’t throw life preservers to that drowning person.’ That’s what they’re doing.”

The Rhode Island Democratic Women’s Caucus, which Anderson now leads, is no longer officially affiliated with the state Democrat party after a 2019 dispute over fundraising and endorsements resulted in a separation between the two organizations.

The Rhode Island Democratic Women’s Caucus states that it exists to ensure “equality in power, influence, and economic status for women and femme-identified people,” according to their website .

Anderson, whom Reduxx reports is a “75-year-old father of four and grandfather of seven,” has spoken at a variety of universities, including the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Brown University.

Anderson is not, however, the first man who identifies as transgender who has been elected to a leadership position in the Northeast. A Democrat official in New Hampshire, who is also a man who identifies as a woman, was arrested for stalking a woman just days after he was elected to the New Hampshire State House.
