Ukraine-Russia war latest: Putin allies demand ‘most SEVERE’ response after accusing Zelensky of missile strike

July 4, 2022 by www.thesun.co.uk Leave a Comment

VLADIMIR Putin will be seeking the “most severe” response according to allies after they have accused Ukraine of launching a missile strike that has reportedly killed five.

The alleged attack took place in the Russian town of Belgorod, with the governor, Vyacheslav Gladkov, claiming several explosions hit the city of nearly 400,000, which lies 25 miles (40km) north of the border with Ukraine .

Senior Russian lawmaker Andrei Klishas accused Ukraine of shelling Belgorod and called for a stern response.

Klishas wrote on Telegram: “The death of civilians and the destruction of civilian infrastructure in Belgorod are a direct act of aggression on the part of Ukraine and require the most severe – including a military – response”.

Ukraine has not claimed responsibility.

Russia today claimed full control of Lysychansk, the last major Ukrainian-held city in Ukraine’s Luhansk province.

Mystery of ‘world’s most successful spy’

A DOUBLE agent dubbed “the world’s most most successful spy” was instrumental in helping Vladimir Putin seize power – and his identity STILL remains a mystery decades on.

Known simply as “The Fourth Man”, the mole was one of several Soviet spies who managed to infiltrate the heart of the US intelligence services.

But unlike most who were eventually dug out, this mysterious spook has never been identified – making it one of the biggest mysteries in all of espionage.

And he and his colleagues’ mission was so devastating, it is believed they helped pave the way for the rise of the tyrannical Putin in Russia .

Russia’s spies at this time left the CIA paralysed and blind – with no trusty intel being fed to them on the sudden rise of the brutal Vlad.

With this gap, former KGB man and mafia enforcer Putin was able to consolidate his power and set the scene to take control of Russia.

“The Fourth Man” compromised the identities of Russian spies working for Washington DC and leaked troves of sensitive CIA data .

Ukraine-Russia war latest: Evil Putin’s sick ‘hunger plan’ to see MILLIONS starve as despot wages ‘war against Europe’

July 4, 2022 by www.thesun.co.uk Leave a Comment

VLADIMIR PUTIN will unleash a “hunger plan” during which tens of millions of people could suffer from starvation, an expert claims.

Levin Professor of History at Yale, Timothy Snyder, believes Russian leader Putin has already begun executing a “hunger politics” plan similar to that of Joseph Stalin and Adolf Hitler.

As per Express.co.uk, Snyder wrote on Twitter: “Russia has a hunger plan. Vladimir Putin is preparing to starve much of the developing world as the next stage in his war in Europe .”

The plan is centred around controlling Ukraine’s grain exports, according to Mr Snyder, who added: “In normal times, Ukraine is a leading exporter of foodstuffs. A Russian naval blockade now prevents Ukraine from exporting grain.

“If the Russian blockade continues, tens of millions of tons of food will rot in silos, and tens of millions of people in Africa and Asia will starve.

“The horror of Putin’s hunger plan is so great that we have a hard time apprehending it. We also tend to forget how central food is to politics. Some historical examples can help.”

“Russia is planning to starve Asians and Africans in order to win its war in Europe. This is a new level of colonialism, and the latest chapter of hunger politics.”

The battle in Donbas is not yet over, claims Ukrainian official

Ukraine’s defence ministry spokesman Yuriy Sak has rejected the idea that the fall of Lysychansk would mark the end of their struggle in the east.

He says there are “other large cities in the Donbas area, in particular in the Donetsk region” in which Ukraine still hold firm.

“These are cities that for the last couple of days [have been] targets of severe missile attacks, artillery shelling,” he says, “but the battle for the Donbas is not over yet”.

    Where is Snake Island?

Snake Island, also known as Serpent Island or Zmiinyi Island, belongs to Ukraine.

It is located in the Black Sea, near the Danube Delta, just 30 miles from the coast.

The 46 acres of land are typically covered with rocks and grass, but following Russia’s invasion of the island , it was left “covered in fire,” according to The New York Times .

Prior to the invasion, it was known for its igneous rock formations and was home to an Odessa National University research facility, which students and scientists used to study flora, fauna, meteorology, geology, hydrobiology, and atmospheric chemistry, according to Ukraine.com .

It was also home to a popular lighthouse, which was built by the Russian Empire’s Black Sea Fleet in the fall of 1842.

At this time, it is unclear if Ukraine will restore the island.

Ukrainian defence ministry spokesman Yuriy Sak said the fighting is: “very intense for quite a while now” with Russian ground forces “attacking the city non-stop”.

“For Ukrainians, the value of human life is a top priority, so sometimes we may retreat from certain areas so that we can retake them in the future,” he added.

Kremlin accuses Western countries of blocking peace talks with Ukraine

Moscow has accused the Western nations of preventing peace negotiations with Ukraine and thus dragging out the war.

“Now is the moment when Western countries are betting everything on a continuation of the war,” Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told state television.

Under the leadership of the United States, the West was not allowing Ukrainians “to think about peace, nor to talk about it, nor to discuss it,” Peskov said, referring to statements by Western politicians who had said they did not want to pressure Ukraine into negotiations.

Nevertheless, the moment for negotiations will come, he said. For peace, however, Ukraine must accept Russia’s demands, which include the recognition of the Black Sea peninsula of Crimea as Russian territory and the cession of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, Peskov said.

Czech fighter jets will guard Slovakia’s air space

Czech fighter jets will start guarding neighboring Slovakia’s air space from September, Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala said on Sunday.

Slovakia asked its NATO allies to patrol its skies as it decided to ground its Russian-made MiG-29 fighter jets, which could be sent to neighboring Ukraine to help Kyiv defend itself against Russia’s invasion.

“I don’t see any problem there, the government will certainly approve it,” Fiala said in a televised debate with his Slovak counterpart Eduard Heger.

Slovakia ordered F-16 fighter jets from the United States in 2018. The first planes were expected to arrive this year and the shipment to be completed in the next year, but the delivery is now assumed to take place in 2024.

Russian troops shell Slovyansk in Donetsk region

The eastern Ukrainian city of Slovyansk was hit by powerful shelling from multiple rocket launchers on Sunday.

“The biggest shelling of Slovyansk in recent times. There are up to 15 fires, as well as many dead and wounded,” the head of the military-civilian administration of Slovyansk, Vadym Lyakh said in a video message.

As a result of the shelling, at least six people were killed and 15 people were injured, a spokeswoman for the Donetsk regional administration said.

Slovyansk is one of the largest Ukrainian-controlled cities in the Donetsk region, which is the target of the Russian offensive.

Swedish PM silent on Turkish extradition agreement claims

Swedish Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson on Sunday declined to say whether her government had agreed to deport people sought by Ankara as part of its bid to overcome Turkey’s objections to Sweden’s joining NATO.

“I’ve been a minister for eight years and I never talked about what is said in the negotiation room,” she told reporters, adding: “(That) actually puts me in a bit of a difficult situation right now,” she added.

Andersson said only that her country would continue to respect national and international laws, that no Swedish nationals will be extradited and that the decision would be left to independent authorities and courts.

At a NATO summit in Madrid on Tuesday, Sweden and Finland, which are both set to join the alliance having sought membership in response to Russia’s invasion of nearby Ukraine, agreed to examine Turkish extradition requests “expeditiously and thoroughly.”

However, no promise was given to actually carry out the extraditions, though Turkish President Erdogan says Sweden did vow to extradite “73 terrorists,” threatening to block the country’s NATO membership if that did not occur.

Sweden is home to a 100,000-strong Kurdish diaspora. Ankara claims that some Kurds in the country have links to the PKK (Kurdistan Workers Party), which has waged an insurgency in Turkey since 1984 and whose members Ankara considers terrorists.

Berlin discussing security guarantees for Ukraine with allies: Scholz

Germany has been debating with its allies what security guarantees can be given to Ukraine when the war in the country is over, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has told public service broadcaster ARD.

“We are discussing with close friends the question of the security guarantees we can give. This is an ongoing process. It is clear that it will not be the same as if someone were a member of NATO,” Scholz said.

“It is quite clear that this is a matter that is being carefully prepared in the diplomatic sphere, for the day we hope to see soon, when the war is over,” he added.

Ukraine war: The fight for Lysychansk

Russian and allied forces have ‘liberated’ Luhansk region: Russian defense minister

Russia’s Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu has told President Vladimir Putin that the entire region of Luhansk in eastern Ukraine has been taken by Russian and separatist forces after the city of Lysychansk fell to their assault, the Russian news agency Interfax says.

Shoigu described the capture of Luhansk as a “liberation” from Kyiv’s rule.

Ukraine has so far not confirmed Shoigu’s claim to have taken Lysychansk, which Ukrainian forces have fiercely defended in past weeks.

Russia has been focusing its efforts on driving Ukrainian forces out of the Luhansk and Donetsk regions in the Donbas since an initial attempt to take the capital failed.

Moscow-backed separatists have been fighting Ukrainian government troops there since Russia’s first military intervention in Ukraine in 2014.

Germany’s reception of refugees better than in 2015: Interior minister

Refugees from Ukraine in Germany face better conditions than those who fled the conflict in Syria in 2015, German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser says, praising all EU states for their readiness to take in people driven from their homes by Russia’s invasion.

“We have done many things much better than we did during the last major refugee movement in 2015,” Faeser told the dpa news agency in an interview.

She said EU countries had displayed a “quick and unbureaucratic” ability to take in refugees from Ukraine, describing it as a “historic success.”

Germany has taken in more than 850,000 people from Ukraine since the Russian invasion began on February 24, she said, most of them women and children.

Battle for key Ukrainian stronghold intensifies

The battle for the key eastern Ukrainian city of Lysychansk intensified on Sunday, as Russian forces strengthened their positions around the city, the regional governor of Luhansk said.

“The occupiers threw all their forces on Lysychansk. They attacked the city with incomprehensibly cruel tactics,” Serhiy Haidai said in a Telegram post.

“They suffer significant losses, but stubbornly advance. They are gaining a foothold in the city,” he added.

Oleksiy Arestovych, an adviser to Ukrainian president Zelenskky, said Russian forces had crossed the strategic Siverskiy Donets river and were approaching the city from the north.

“This is indeed a threat…things will become much more clear within a day or two,” Arestovych said.

Both comments came a day after Russia and Ukraine laid competing claims over Lysychansk, the last remaining major Ukrainian stronghold in Luhansk region.

Russian forces have aimed at occupying all of Donbas region, which comprises the provinces of Luhansk and Donetsk.

With Russian forces having already taken control of neighboring city Severodonetsk last week, the fall of Lysychansk would mean that the whole of Luhansk region would fall to Russian control.

Three die in blasts in Russia’s Belgorod: Governor

Explosions have killed three people and wounded four others in the Russian city of Belgorod, near the border with Ukraine, the region’s governor has said.

The blasts damaged at least 11 apartment buildings and 39 houses, with five of these destroyed, Vyacheslav Gladkov said on the Telegram messaging app.

A 10-year-old child was reportedly among the injured.

The cause of the explosions is being investigated, but several Russian regions near the Ukrainian border have repeatedly accused the Ukrainian military of shelling civilian targets since Moscow began its invasion of Ukraine on February 24.

Kyiv does not usually comment on such accusations.

Zelenskyy calls for international humanitarian aid

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy delivered a message of hope in his nightly address on Sunday, saying no matter how “difficult it is for us today, we must remember that there will be a tomorrow.”

He called for international humanitarian aid so Ukrainians could rebuild their lives once again.

“It is necessary not only to repair everything the occupiers have destroyed but also to create a new foundation for our lives: safe, modern, comfortable, accessible.”

For Ukraine, this meant “colossal investments — billions.”

Zelenskyy added it would also require “new technologies, best practices, new institutions, and, of course, reforms.”

Leaders from dozens of countries are set to meet in the southern Swiss city of Lugano from July 4 to 5 to lay the groundwork for Ukraine’s recovery. The Ukraine Recovery Conference 2022 was renamed in light of Russia’s invasion this year, but would otherwise have been the fifth installment of the Ukraine Reform Conference, past editions of which took place in London, Copenhagen, Toronto and Vilnius.

Recap of Saturday’s events

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko accused Kyiv of firing at its military facilities, but failed to provide any evidence.

Belarusian state-run Belta news agency quoted Lukashenko as saying the Belarusian military intercepted all missiles targeting it.

Russia and Ukraine made competing claims over the key eastern Ukrainian city of Lysychansk in the Luhansk region.

Russia said it “completely” encircled the city, but Ukraine’s army denied the claims, saying it was still under the control of the Ukrainian army.

Russia has focused on seizing Lysychansk as part of its campaign to claim full control of Luhansk, one of the two areas that make up the eastern Donbas region.

A German official warned that Russia could be planning to use a regular 11-day maintenance break on the Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline, from July 11, as an opportunity to cut gas supplies to Germany.

Ukraine war: Five important developments to know for Sunday

July 3, 2022 by www.euronews.com Leave a Comment

1. Russian forces claim control of Lysychansk

Russia claimed control Sunday over the last Ukrainian stronghold in an eastern province that is key to achieving a major goal of its grinding war.

Ukraine’s General Staff of the military reported that its forces had withdrawn from Lysychansk in Luhansk province, but the president said the fight for the city was ongoing.

If confirmed, Russia’s complete seizure of Luhansk would provide its forces a stronger base from which to press their advance in neighboring Donetsk province and bring them one step closer to achieving one of President Vladimir Putin’s major goals: capturing the entire Donbas.

Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu told Putin that Russia’s troops, with members of a local separatist militia, “have established full control over the city of Lysychansk” and now hold all of Luhansk, according to a ministry statement published Sunday.

As is typical with such descriptions, the Russian statement characterized the victories as “the liberation of the Luhansk People’s Republic.” Separatists in Luhansk and Donetsk, which make up the Donbas and have significant Russian-speaking populations, declared independence from Kyiv in 2014, and Russia formally recognized their self-proclaimed republics days before its invasion of Ukraine on 24 February.

Ukrainian and Russian forces have fought fiercely for Lysychansk in recent days after neighboring Sievierodoentsk fell last week. On Sunday evening, the General Staff of Ukraine’s military confirmed on social media that its forces had withdrawn from Lysychansk “to preserve the lives of Ukrainian defenders.”

2. Australia PM visits Ukraine, promises more military aid

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese pledged on Sunday to increase military support to Ukraine, including the delivery of new armoured vehicles, in the first trip to Kiev by an Australian head of government.

“Australia will announce today an additional $100 million in military support, bringing our overall support to almost $390 million,” he said at a press briefing with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kiev. He did not confirm whether he meant Australian dollars or US dollars.

Anthony Albanese said Canberra would provide “14 more armoured personnel carriers and 20 more Bushmaster tanks”, as well as drones and assistance to Ukrainian border guards.

He added that Canberra planned to introduce new economic sanctions targeting Russia, as well as “travel bans on 16 more ministers and oligarchs, bringing the total to 843 individuals and 62 entities targeted by Australia”.

“We will ban the import of Russian gold to reduce Russia’s ability to finance its war,” he said, adding that he was “very honoured to be the first Australian Prime Minister to visit Ukraine.

PM Albanese visited Butcha, Irpine and Gostomel on the outskirts of Kyiv, which have become symbols of the atrocities of war. “Clearly, civilian areas have been targeted by Russian forces in this immoral and illegal war,” he said.

Mr Albanese also said Russian President Vladimir Putin would receive “the welcome he deserves” if he attends the G20 summit in November in Bali, Indonesia.

President Zelenskyy praised Australia’s “considerable assistance, particularly in the area of defence”.

3. Six dead, 15 wounded in rocket attack on eastern Ukraine city

The mayor of the eastern Ukrainian city of Sloviansk said that a rocket attack on Sunday left “six dead and 15 wounded”.

“The provisional toll from today’s shooting is six dead and 15 wounded. Among the dead, there is a child,” Vadim Liakh said on Facebook, confirming earlier reports.

He said several districts of the city, which had a population of about 100,000 before the war, had been hit.

“Multiple rocket fire on Sloviansk, the biggest for a long time. There are fifteen fires. Many dead and wounded,” he initially said in a video posted on Facebook.

Tetiana Ignatchenko, a spokeswoman for the Donetsk region to which Sloviansk belongs, reiterated the authorities’ call for residents to leave the region, even though the front line is only a few kilometres from Sloviansk.

According to Ukrainian media, one of the city’s markets was on fire following the strikes.

Further south, the town of Kramatorsk, the administrative centre of the Ukrainian-controlled Donbass, was hit for the second consecutive day by Smertch rockets, according to the town’s mayor Oleksandr Goncharenko.

The strikes, which hit a residential area and an unoccupied hotel, did not cause any casualties, he said.

Sloviansk and Kramatorsk, two cities with high symbolic value, are under direct threat from Russian forces, especially if the capture of Lyssychansk, further north-east, claimed by Russia on Sunday, is confirmed by Kiev, which says fighting is continuing there.

4. Moscow accuses of Ukraine of firing on the city of Belgorod

The Russian military said it had shot down three Ukrainian missiles launched against the city of Belgorod, near Ukraine, at dawn on Sunday, where a local official had earlier said at least four people had died after explosions.

“Russian anti-aircraft defences shot down the three Totchka-U cluster munitions launched by Ukrainian nationalists against Belgorod,” Russian Defence Ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov said at his daily briefing.

“After the destruction of the Ukrainian missiles, the debris from one of them fell on a house in the city,” he continued.

He said the Russian military also shot down two Ukrainian TU-143 drones “loaded with explosives” and headed for the town of Kursk, also near the Ukrainian border.

In a video released midday on Sunday, the governor of the Belgorod region, Vyacheslav Gladkov, said that the explosions in Belgorod had left at least four people dead and four injured.

Earlier, he said that 11 residential buildings and 39 houses were damaged in the five streets affected by the blasts in northern Belgorod, not far from the city centre.

Since the start of the Kremlin’s offensive in Ukraine on 24 February, Russia has repeatedly accused Ukrainian forces of carrying out strikes on Russian soil, particularly in the Belgorod region.

5. Ukrainians destroy Russian base at Melitopol

The Ukrainian military “decommissioned” a Russian military base in the southern Ukrainian city of Melitopol on Saturday night, its exiled mayor said.

“Today, Ukrainian military forces disabled one of the Russian military bases” in the city, Ivan Fedorov said in a video posted on Telegram.

“At 03:00 and 05:00, 30 strikes were aimed exclusively at the military base,” he added, noting that “the city of Melitopol is covered in smoke” and that “this has been going on for several hours because a fuel depot that was on the base is burning.”

A spokesman for the Ukrainian general staff announced on Sunday morning that the Ukrainian air force had carried out some 15 sorties, particularly in the Zaporizhia region, to which Melitopol belongs, and that “some 20 enemy equipment units and two ammunition depots” had been destroyed.

Yevgeny Balitsky, the head of the region’s pro-Russian administration, said on Telegram that houses near the base had been damaged and that “shells fell on the territory of the airfield”, while assuring that “there are no injuries”.

Ukrainian media published several videos from social networks showing a huge column of smoke rising into the air near Melitopol.

Melitopol was conquered by Russian forces in the early days of Moscow’s offensive in Ukraine and a pro-Russian administration was quickly installed there.

Portuguese PM pledges financial aid to Ukraine, asks for ‘total block of energy sources from Russia’

Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Costa has pledged €250 million euros of financial aid to Ukraine.

Costa met President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Kyiv on Saturday and said he wants to help his EU partners find alternatives to Russian oil and gas.

The prime minister stressed the need to be completely independent of Moscow and “a total block of all energy sources from Russia which is the best way to not continue to finance Russian war efforts”.

In the same press conference, Zelenskyy reminded the international community that the Donbas region remains part of Ukraine and that war will not be waged on Russian territory.

“You see, we just can’t pay the price of tens or hundreds of thousands of lives, so we ask you to help us. These multiple-launch rocket systems, which stand in some countries at a standstill — they are the key to our survival” Zelenskyy said.

‘Saint Javelin’ mural to be painted in Kyiv

The viral “Saint Javelin” meme featuring an Eastern Orthodox-style Virgin Mary cradling a Javelin anti-tank missile — a one-man design originally intended to boost donations to aid Ukrainians — will get a mural in the capital, Kyiv Independent reported.

The mural will be the first of a series on Antonova Street, according to former deputy of the Kyiv City Council Andriy Andreev.

“Saint Javelin” has become one of the most popular images illustrating the Ukrainian resistance to the Russian invasion, with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Minister of Defence Oleksii Reznikov both sporting the design in recent weeks.

‘Justice ministry oxymoron under Putin’, chess champion Kasparov says

Chessmaster and prominent dissident Gary Kasparov was added to the list of “individuals acting as foreign agents”, according to the Russian Justice Ministry website — a designation heavily criticised as a violation of human rights and a means of suppression of civil society actors and journalists.

Kasparov, who was added to the list on Friday together with another prominent critic of President Vladimir Putin’s regime, former oil tycoon Mikhail Khodorovsky, responded by saying that the “‘Russian Justice Ministry’ is an oxymoron under Putin.”

“I was representing my country back when Putin was still spying on his colleagues in East Germany,” Kasparov said on Twitter.

“Being anti-Putin is, and always will be, pro-Russian,” Kasparov concluded.

Both Kasparov and Khodorovsky have been campaigning against Russia’s war in Ukraine, while also organising supporting humanitarian relief programmes.

UK MoD: Russian forces becoming short on operational drones

Russia is likely experiencing a shortage of reconnaissance drones, which it has used to identify targets to be struck by combat jets or artillery, the UK Ministry of Defence said on Saturday.

This is exacerbated by limitations in its domestic manufacturing capacity resulting from sanctions, the report said.

If Russia continues to lose UAVs at the current rate, Russian army intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities will be further degraded, negatively impacting operational effectiveness, the ministry said in a regular bulletin.
