Football fans baffled as rarely-used rule disallows Kai Havertz’s penalty rebound

March 27, 2023 by www.dailystar.co.uk Leave a Comment

Chelsea forward Kai Havertz has seemingly developed a love affair with the post.

As is the case when he is in his day job, Havertz was given penalty duties in Germany’s 2-0 friendly victory over Peru. While both Graham Potter and Hansi Flick trust him with the most nerve-wracking kick of a football in the beautiful game, Havertz’s record from the penalty spot is not the greatest.

He looked cool, confident, and ready to wheel off in celebration when he picked up the ball against the South Americans. As he did against Borussia Dortmund, his stuttered penalty struck the bottom of the post . However, what happened next left many in the football world baffled.

As the ball struck the woodwork, it bounced straight back to a very grateful Havertz. With the keeper on the floor, he stroked it home on the rebound. But without hesitation, the referee blew the whistle and signalled for a freekick to Peru.

This is because the rules read, “the kicker must not play the ball again until it has touched another player”. Because the ball had hit the post before it touched another player, Havertz was not allowed to touch the ball again.

Was this the first time you had learned about this rule? Let us know in the comments section below

Had his penalty been tipped onto the post by the goalkeeper, Havertz would have been free to convert the rebound, as it had touched another player on the pitch. In short, the former Bayer Leverkusen star was deemed to have kicked the ball twice when a penalty kick only allows one kick of the ball.

“I’ve been watching football for over 40 years and this is the first time I’ve seen this happen,” claimed one fan. “We learn every day” said another.

“After one other fan in the comments section explained the rule, a very grateful fan said, “oh thanks for this. I learnt something new”. Fortunately for Havertz and Germany, they were already comfortably leading Peru courtesy of a brace from Niclas Fullkrug.

As the hosts of Euro 2024, the 2014 World Cup winners do not need to go through the qualifying stages to book their place.

Cristiano Ronaldo showed off a new goal celebration in memory of his time at Manchester United as he bagged a brace in a Euro 2024 qualifying game for Portugal on Sunday night. Portugal thrashed Luxembourg 6-0 in their second qualifier as they moved two points clear of Slovakia at the top of the Group J table.

Ronaldo was in fine form for his country at the Stade de Luxembourg and opened the scoring in the ninth minute as he bundled the ball in from close range. And to celebrate his strike, the blockbuster star ran to the corner of the pitch, where he combined his trademark Siu and Nap celebrations.

Ronaldo’s Siu celebration originated during his time playing for Real Madrid, with the ace shouting the word down the microphone after beating Lionel Messi to the Ballon d’Or in 2014. And he later explained: “The scream? The players know I always do that shout when I score a goal or when we win. It’s our shout, from Real Madrid.”

Ronaldo’s Nap celebration, meanwhile, was spotted for the first time last autumn after the 38-year-old had scored against Everton for the Red Devils.

According to the United website , the celebration was “a self-deprecating in-joke with his fellow team-mates” and “a nod to the position in which he sleeps when travelling with the squad.” Ronaldo is known for his strict off-the-pitch regime to ensure he is in the best shape possible. And he is reported to nap several times a time.

Joao Felix and Bernardo Silva added their names to the scoresheet inside the opening 20 minutes against Luxembourg, before Ronaldo kept his composure to finish well after being teed-up by ex-United team-mate Bruno Fernandes just after the half hour mark. And the Euro 2016 winners wrapped up the victory in the second half as Otavio and Rafael Leao struck late on.

Ronaldo is one of the most decorated players in the history of football, having won five Champions Leagues, five Ballon d’Ors and four Club World Cups. He enjoyed two spells with United, where he bagged 145 goals and 64 assists in 346 matches.

The veteran started the current season at Old Trafford after signing for the club for a second time in the summer of 2021. But following an explosive interview with Piers Morgan , during which he said he felt “betrayed” by the club and had “no respect” for manager Erik ten Hag, the ace had his contract terminated and signed for Saudi Arabian team Al-Nassr.

Five international sides banned from squaring off as ‘Europe’s bloodiest match’ kicks off

March 25, 2023 by www.dailystar.co.uk Leave a Comment

On Saturday evening, Armenia and Turkey will square off with one another in their Euro 2024 qualifier in a clash that goes beyond the confines of football.

The sides have only played each twice since Armenia’s independence from the Soviet Union in 1991 – during the 2010 World Cup qualifiers. “This is only a football game, it is not a war. We cannot carry the weight of history on our shoulders,” Fatih Terim told press ahead of the game.

However, the two countries have no diplomatic relationship, and their 193-mile land border is closed. Their rivalry stems from the refusal of Turkey to acknowledge a genocide against the Armenians predating the foundation of each country, and yet UEFA allows them to play each other.

Some countries, however, are deemed too dangerous to face each other.

Russia vs Ukraine

Russia and Ukraine have been separated by UEFA since 2014 – when skirmishes of conflict broke out in the Donbas region of Ukraine.

However, the two sides did clash in the 2021 Futsal European Champions, just weeks before Vladimir Putin’s troops crossed the border and started their siege on Kyiv. On that evening Ukrainian fans chanted: “Putin is a d***head.”

That was met with a reaction over the PA system: “Please stop singing political songs. If it continues the referee will stop the game.” In 11-a-side clashes, Russia and Ukraine haven’t played each other since 2007.

Armenia vs Azerbaijan

Europe’s ‘forgotten war’ still sees flourishes of conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan over the disputed region of Nagorno-Karabakh – also known as Artsakh.

Internationally recognised as part of Azerbaijan it’s ethnically Armenian – causing the two sides to clash in the bitter conflict. Interestingly, FK Qarabag – who have played in the Champions League in recent seasons – are technically from the region.

Qarabag, who play in Azerbaijan, escaped the conflict in 1993, relocating to Baku: Azerbaijan’s capital, where they have been heavily funded by the government. In Azerbaijan, their viewed as a wonderful fairytale, while in Armenia it’s scoffed at as a PR exercise to aid their claim.

Kosovo vs Serbia, Bosnia & Herzegovina, and Russia

When Kosovo was granted status from FIFA and UEFA, they were almost instantly banned from facing Serbia – who also claim the region.

Kosovo declared independence 15 years ago, following the Yugoslavian Civil War. However, they have faced numerous challenges with some countries not recognising the new state: alongside Serbia, these include Russia, China and Spain.

Due to tensions remaining in the Balkans, Kosovo can’t face Bosnia – while Russia can’t face Kosovo, with UEFA citing security risks.

Spain vs Gibraltar

Another disputed territory means that two UEFA sides have to be kept apart in qualification and – should Gibraltar pull off a miracle and qualify – tournaments.

Gibraltar is an overseas region of the United Kingdom, which was ceded to the UK under the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713. However, Spain still maintains a claim over the region – and to play them in an international match would recognise their independence.

It’s the same reason why Spain doesn’t recognise Kosovo, because of their stance towards Gibraltar.

Palestine vs Israel

In a similar situation to the previous entry, both Palestine and Israel lay claim to the same area. And their bitter conflict is often on the front pages of the news.

Due to Israel’s treatment of Palestine, the Arab world refused to play them, which led to Israel qualifying for the 1958 World Cup without playing a single game. In the 1980s Israel left the AFC, which meant they entered Oceania’s qualification for two World Cups.

Israeli clubs began taking part in European club competitions in 1991 and its football association became full UEFA members in 1994.

Indian Football Team To Go All Out Against Kyrgyz Republic In Tri-Nation Title Decider | Football News

March 27, 2023 by sports.ndtv.com Leave a Comment

A draw against Kyrgyz Republic is enough for India to win the Tri-Nation International Football tournament on Tuesday but head coach Igor Simac said the hosts will go all out for a win. The Blue Tigers began with a slender 1-0 win over Myanmar on Wednesday last. They need just a draw to win the tournament after Kyrgyz Republic snatched a 1-1 draw against Myanmar in the second match of tournament on Saturday. Kyrgyz Republic, on the other hand, will require a win against India to claim the trophy.

“We will go all out to win. We have a full house with our supporters and a chance to prove ourselves. It will also be a much stronger team than the first game,” Stimac said at the pre-match press conference.

“I was right when I said Myanmar is a serious side that can hurt you. We saw that against the Kyrgyz Republic. It will, of course, be a different challenge against the Kyrgyz side because they don’t have any option but to come out and win.” Goalkeeper Amrinder Singh, who started in the 1-0 win over Myanmar, accompanied Stimac in the press conference and said he would want to keep up his good performance.

“I always try to do my best whenever I get the chance. Coach gives me a lot of confidence on and off the pitch. I work hard in training, rest well, sleep well and eat well. I’m happy with my performance and I want to keep it up,” Singh said.

Stimac was all praise for the custodian as well and said Singh had “top reactions and eliminated every danger”.

“He has always done well in the few games he’s played under me — against Thailand (1-0), Oman (1-1) and now Myanmar (1-0),” the head coach said.

Stimac also informed that Sahal Abdul Samad has joined the national team camp ahead of Tuesday’s game.

“Sahal is here with us as we have a couple of injuries. He will be another option for us.” Kyrgyz Republic are ranked 94th in the world, while India are at 106.

Disappointed with his side’s opening-match draw against Myanmar, Kyrgyz Republic head coach Alexander Krestinin said they might have taken the game a bit casually.

“We reviewed the game (against Myanmar). A lot of things didn’t go as planned. We have also analysed India’s matches and will look to correct our previous mistakes tomorrow. We will make some changes in the team,” said Krestinin.

The Russian has been in charge of the Kyrgyz side since 2014 and faced India twice during the 2019 AFC Asian Cup qualifying campaign (a 2-1 win at home and a 0-1 loss away).

But, he said that those results will have no bearing on Tuesday’s match.

“The previous games against India don’t affect our preparations for tomorrow. Now, there are many new faces on both sides and it will be a different sort of game,” said Krestinin.

Man Utd star takes over from Thiago Silva as Brazil captain and Chelsea fans rage

March 25, 2023 by www.dailystar.co.uk Leave a Comment

Casemiro has been appointed new Brazil captain after taking the armband off Thiago Silva, despite the fact the Chelsea man has not retired from international football yet.

The decision was made ahead of the team’s friendly against Morocco on Saturday – a game Silva will miss after being sidelined with a knee injury last month.

Blues fans were up in arms about the captaincy switch, with one user labelling it “disrespectful bulls***.”

“Striping Silva of the armband when he’s still available for selection is a low blow,” one fan tweeted.

“How can they treat Thiago Silva like that? Disrespectful bulls***,” another wrote, while a third commented: “Chelsea treat Thiago Silva with more respect than Brazil do. Madness.”

Silva, 38, had been Seleção captain for nearly a decade, having been handed the armband ahead of the 2014 World Cup. The veteran defender has played 113 times for his country, nearly two-thirds of which have been as captain.

Has Thiago Silva been done dirty by Brazil? Let us know what you think in the comments section below.

Following Brazil’s defeat to Croatia in the World Cup, many expected Silva to announce his international retirement, but the former PSG and AC Milan star pledged to make himself available for selection until the tournament in 2026.

He’ll be 41 by the time it rolls around, but given his Benjamin Button-like Chelsea swansong, would anyone actually put it past him?

The decision to appoint Casemiro as the team’s new captain will come as a blow to Neymar, who is the squad’s most experienced player and one strike away from becoming the country’s highest-ever goalscorer.

Casemiro, who has been a revelation at Manchester United this season, has racked up 69 appearances for Brazil and has more-or-less been an ever-present in the side since breaking into Real Madrid’s first team back in 2015.
