We have never lacked as South Africans is belief: Pacer Kagiso Rabada ‘hopeful’ of winning ODI World Cup

September 28, 2023 by economictimes.indiatimes.com Leave a Comment

Synopsis

South Africa pacer Kagiso Rabada is confident that his team can win the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup for the first time. Despite their talented players, South Africa has never won a World Cup title or reached the final. Rabada believes they have the belief and the players to win the upcoming tournament.

South Africa pacer Kagiso Rabada believes Proteas have all the strength to shake the ‘chokers’ tag and get their hands on the coveted ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup trophy for the first time.

Despite having some outstanding cricketers, they have yet to claim a World Cup title victory. Additionally, they have yet to play an ODI or T20I World Cup final. Proteas have competed in numerous semifinals, but have never advanced past that stage. However, the star pacer Rabada is optimistic about Proteas’ chances of winning their maiden ICC trophy.

In this upcoming tournament, South Africa will be missing the services of main fast bowlers Anrich Nortje and Sisanda Magala.

“One thing we have never lacked as South Africans is belief, so going into the tournament we do believe we can win it. We’ve got the players to do so, so hopefully we can make our first final and win this competition. It’s going to be hard but it’s going to be really enjoyable. It’s exciting to have the best players in the world playing against each other and competing for one prize, and we are up for the challenge,” Rabada was quoted as saying by ICC.

After registering a remarkable 3-2 victory against Australia after being 2-0 down, the four-time semifinalists are full of confidence to start their WC campaign against Sri Lanka in Delhi on October 7.

Before starting their campaign for the 50-over tournament, South Africa will play two warm-up matches – against Afghanistan and New Zealand- on Friday and October 2 respectively at the Greenfield International Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram.

Rabada will play his second World Cup, after making his first appearance in the 2019 World Cup. The star pacer honestly admitted that he was not his best in his first WC outing with the Proteas, but hopes to make amends in the upcoming prestigious tournament.

“The 2019 World Cup was my first and I wasn’t successful at all. The lesson I took from that is that team cohesion is the most important factor, because individuals don’t win World Cups, teams do,” Rabada added.

“The older I have become and the more caps I have, the more I realise that I am a leader in that environment. Through knowing my own strengths and reinforcing them, knowing what makes me tick and through lending an ear to other players, I want to help set how we play as a collective,” the star pacer said.

Meanwhile, the original South Africa captain Temba Bavuma will miss the Proteas’ both warm-up matches because he is travelling home for family reasons, as Proteas Men stated on social media ‘X’, formerly known as Twitter. In his absence, T20I skipper Aiden Markram will captain the side in the warm-up fixture.

South Africa squad: Temba Bavuma (c), Gerald Coetzee, Quinton de Kock, Reeza Hendricks, Marco Jansen, Heinrich Klaasen, Keshav Maharaj, Aiden Markram, David Miller, Lungi Ngidi, Andile Phehlukwayo, Kagiso Rabada, Tabraiz Shamsi, Rassie van der Dussen and Lizaad Williams. (ANI)

Australia on verge of World Cup elimination after being thumped 40-6 by Wales who surge into quarter-finals

September 24, 2023 by www.thesun.co.uk Leave a Comment

WALES rammed Eddie Jones’ boasts back down his throat, as super-sub Gareth Anscombe sent the Dragons roaring into the World Cup quarter-finals.

Anscombe kicked 23 points and set up one of Wales two tries after taking over from fly half Dan Biggar with just eight minutes played.

That meant Wales are the first team guaranteed a place in the last eight, while the Wallabies are virtually certain to be dumped out in the Pool stage for the first time.

And the thing that will stick in Jones’ throat – along with his hollow claim he had “no doubt” his team would win – is the fact that Ansombe has just signed for Japanese team Suntory Goliath – where the Aussie coach doubles up as chief consultant.

If Jones was behind that signing, he must have feared what might happen when Anscombe took over from the limping Biggar so early in the game.

Not that he will get much pity. Every time his face appeared on the big screen there were raucous boos, while there were equally loud cheers when the cameras switched to opposite number Warren Gatland.

You suspect Jones would lose a popularity contest even if his only rival was the Namibian player whose head-on tackle is threatening to bring Antoine Dupont’s World Cup to a premature end.

Hios five year contract to take the Wallabies through to the next World Cup – in Australia – could easily be ripped up after back-to-back defeats against Fiji and Wales seem certain to condemn them to an early flight home.

Even the bullish Jones must have begun to doubt himself as Wales made the sort of start Gatland must have dreamed about.

They scored a brilliant try from  their very first attack. And once again it was captain Jac Morgan, who has quickly developed into an inspirational figure for the Dragons, who was at the heart of it.

The flanker showed the pace of an outside back as he burst through the gap, and sent Gareth Davies over for a try that Dan Biggar converted.

The sight of the scoreboard showing Wales 7-0 ahead with less than three minutes played was a glorious one for the Welsh.

But watching Biggar, their record World Cup points scorer, limp off a few minutes later was far less encouraging.

And two quickfire penalties from Wallabies fly half  Ben Donaldosn, cutting the  deficit to a single point, deepend the gloom.

It did not last long, as Anscombe banged over a hat-trick of first half penalties to make it 16-6 at half time.

Wales were also helped by some dodgy decision-making from the Wallabies.

They butchered a try-scoring chance when Donaldson ignored a two man overlap and threw a wild pass that Anscombe picked. And the Aussies then rejected an easy three points to kick to the corner – and lost the lineout!

Anscombe made them pay with his fourth penalty three minutes after the break, and his pinpoint kick over the top five minutes later created the second Welsh try for Nick Tompkins.

Anscombe converted, to put Wales twenty points clear, and the booming chorus of Hymns and Arias suggested the Welsh supporters felt this one was in the bag.

And they were right. Anscombe kicked two more penalties, and added a dropped goal. Every time he struck it felt like the boot was going deeper into Jones’ gut.

Welsh dragons eye path to semi-finals

Having put themselves in a position to win Pool C, it is likely that Wales will face either Argentina or Japan.

Then as they faced Australia, they put in one of the best performances we have seen in the 2023 Rugby World Cup.

    59. Gordon puts a terrible high kick up that comes back down to him without moving.

He knocks it forward and Wales have a penalty advantage.

As the move breaks down, they opt to go for the posts.

Fuming Eddie Jones threatens to WALK OUT of press conference over journalist’s question after Rugby World Cup loss

AUSTRALIA head coach Eddie Jones sensationally threatened to WALK OUT of an awkward press conference following Wales’ demolition of the Wallabies yesterday.

The former England head coach oversaw a record 40-6 defeat to Wales in Lyon on Sunday.

The result sees Australia all but out of the Rugby World Cup as they now have to rely on Fiji to slip up against either Georgia or Portugal.

Jones was grilled during the press conference after rumours emerged that he held a job interview to become Japanese head coach two weeks prior to the beginning of the tournament.

When asked whether the interview had taken place he said: “I don’t know what you’re talking about, mate.”

He had the same response when asked if he had a second interview for the job lined up.

When asked if he could give Australia fans a guarantee that he would still be coach by next year he simply replied: “I’m committed to coaching Australia.”

Jones finally had enough after Wallabies captain Dave Porecki was asked about whether his coach’s links to Japan affected Australia during their defeat to Wales.

A clearly uncomfortable looking Porecki replied: “We didn’t turn up tonight. That’s got nothing to do with the noise, it’s just got to do with our performance. We weren’t good enough.”

A now irate Jones interjected as Porecki finished his answer and said: “I really do take umbrage at the questioning, that people are questioning my commitment to coaching Australia.

“I really take umbrage at it. I’ve been working non-stop since I’ve come here and I apologise for the results, I keep saying that.

“But to doubt my commitment to the job I think is a bit red hot.

“So we’re not gonna deal with any of those questions any further. I’m happy to talk about Wales, I’m happy to talk about Portugal.

“But if you wanna keep going down that line I’ll excuse myself. So do you want to decide what you want to do?”

Jones’ ultimatum paid off as he ultimately finished the awkward press conference.

Australia will take on Portugal next Sunday at 4:45 pm with their World Cup hopes hanging by a thread.
