Yindii App Launches Thailand’s First Anti-Food-Waste Startup

October 21, 2020 by www.chiangraitimes.com Leave a Comment

Yindii, a Thai anti-food-waste startup, launches a mobile application designed to match hungry, deal-seeking Bangkok residents with environmentally-conscious restaurants, grocery stores and cafes offering delicious food that could otherwise go to waste. Through its discounted “flash sales,” Yindii helps battle an escalating societal problem while enabling Bangkok restaurants to gain potentially lost revenue.

Yindii app is designed to be a direct-to-consumer platform created for restaurants and cafes who can create exclusive and immediate “Happy Hour Deals” offers regularly, with up to discount from 50 to 70%.

Once a Yindii box offer is published, Yindii users can then purchase the Yindii box before heading to the Bangkok restaurant to collect their items or getting them delivered. Transactions are completed electronically.

Consumers can discover what is inside when they open their surprise gift box. Aside from the savings – and committing to the reduction of food waste – consumers benefit from the app by connecting with their favourite food joints to easily find highly discounted items.

The growing problem of food waste

“33% of all food produced globally is wasted or lost every year. That is close to a billion and a half tons which is never consumed, accounting for 8% of the greenhouse gas emissions around the globe, 4 times more polluting than the airline industry. All this is an ecological disaster!

The growing problem of food waste is challenging to solve for endless reasons including logistics, the complexities of short-lived items and the lack of a set market, which is what we are working to help solve – with a simple system for people and restaurants of surplus food to connect and enact.” says Yindii founder and tech entrepreneur Louis-Alban Batard-Dupre

“All the food available on Yindii is delicious and untouched, coming from premium places, that just cannot wait for tomorrow to be eaten. Think about pastries in coffee shops or fresh meals in restaurants. Our community, the Food Waste Fighters, can rescue the food and provide access to quality meals at an affordable price.”, he added.

For the first 100 users who download the app, Yindii Thailand is offering free delivery up to 5km from any store with the code: SAVETHEPLANET.

Available for download on Apple’s app store for iOS devices and on Google Play for Android devices, the Anti-Food-Waste Startup Yindii app features an initial group of restaurants and cafes including: Sofitel Sukhumvit, Veganerie, Ohana Poke, Broccoli Revolution, Delifrance, Sunshine Market, Banana Warrior, among others.

About Yindii App Thailand

With one third of food produced globally is lost or wasted every year, the Anti-Food-Waste Startup Yindii was established with a simple mission: to make sure delicious unsold meals are tasted, not wasted. Yindii is Thailand’s first food rescue application connecting consumers with restaurants and cafes which have excess food products at discounted prices. For more information about Yindii and to join the movement, visit https://www.yindii.co, or download the app on Google Play or the App Store.

Binge-eating in lockdown sparks surge in agonising historical condition

August 15, 2022 by www.thesun.co.uk Leave a Comment

THE COVID pandemic saw many of us turn to takeaways to relieve utter boredom or stress.

As a result, people could be at risk of an agonising condition which has surged in the past three years.

Gout , a common form of arthritis , causes episodes of extremely achy joints lasting around one week.

It can be triggered by indulging in delicious foods, drinking alcohol and being overweight.

Figures show that hospital admissions for the disease have risen by 20 per cent in three years, The Telegraph reported.

Some 234,000 people were  admitted to hospital with a primary or secondary diagnosis of gout in 2021/22.

The figures from NHS Digital follow a significant rise in obesity over the same period.

Already around up to two per cent of the British population suffer with gout.

Gout is historically called “the disease of kings” because it only affected those who were rich enough to eat huge feasts of food.

Tam Fry, from the National Obesity Forum, said: “Forget Falstaff, Henry VIII and the rich Victorians who made gout infamous.

“Today’s Elizabethans are eating and drinking them all under the table.”

Research suggests that lockdown made the UK’s already significant obesity problem worse.

Experts said many different factors may be behind the rise – lower levels of exercise, spending more time sitting around, takeaways, boredom and general uncertainty.

The three leading food delivery apps — Deliveroo , Uber Eats and Just Eat — have seen demand surge since the start of the pandemic.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has warned that Britain will become the fattest nation in Europe by the early 2030s, with 37 per cent of adults classed as obese.

Women and adults under the age of 45 have been most likely to put on weight during the pandemic, according to a University of Leicester study in May.

Researcher Professor Thomas Yates said: “The implications of even modest weight gain at a population level could translate into more diabetes, heart disease, cancers and other serious obesity-related health problems over the coming decades unless action is taken to reverse the effects of lockdown.”

Overconsumption of alcohol can also cause a gout attack.

And research reveals that the pandemic saw heavier drinkers consuming more alcohol, which experts said in July would inevitably cause more disease and death.

Other evidence suggests that gout patients in fact decreased over the pandemic.

Dr Abhishek Abhishek, University of Nottingham, wrote in the British Medical Journal that Covid saw a drop in incidence.

However, this could be because diagnoses were not made, he warned, “rather than an improved lifestyle or a decrease in alcohol consumption”.

“This may cause a surge in gout cases presenting to health services in the near future,” Dr Abhishek said.

Gout episodes usually start with a sudden and severe pain in the big toe, but it can also be in the feet, hands, wrists, elbows and knees.

It is first treated with painkillers, but otherwise a person may be given steroids as injections or tablets. Some have to take medication to prevent repeated attacks.

The NHS advices losing weight, limiting alcohol and fatty food, exercising, stopping smoking and more healthy habits to avoid gout flare-ups.

What does gout feel like?

Symptoms of gout, according to the NHS are:

  • Severe pain in one or more joints
  • The joint feeling hot and very tender

  • Red, shiny skin over the affected joint

Any joint can be affected by gout, but it normally hits the toes, ankles, knees and fingers.

The symptoms develop rapidly over a few hours, and typically last for between three and 10 days.

Gout is extremely painful, and can be debilitating.

After this time, the pain should pass and the joint return to normal – until the next attack.

I’m a foodie – the items I ALWAYS buy at CostCo, you can’t skip the seaweed

August 15, 2022 by www.thesun.co.uk Leave a Comment

PLAN for your next CostCo trip with the help of a major foodie and fan of the big-box discount store.

The food influencer shared her favorite little-known treasures from CostCo, including a seaweed snack and quality cuts from the butcher’s counter.

Self-declared “snack queen” Jen Curley is a CostCo super fan with 1.3million followers on TikTok. In a video, she revealed her favorite buys – and tried plenty of samples in the process.

Her first stop in the store was the cheese section, where she picked up some Kingdom Organic aged cheddar.

“Every time I put this on the charcuterie board, everyone’s asking about it because it’s so delicious,” the foodie gushed.

Curley also picked up some pantry items from Kirkland, CostCo’s in-store brand.

She stocked up on the brand’s organic seaweed, and said that the CostCo staple is even better than the offerings at her local Asian grocery store.

“This is my favorite seaweed,” she said, grabbing packets of the snack.

Shoppers should also try Kirkland peanut butter, Curley said as she added a two-pack to her cart.

“Run, go try it,” she instructed her followers. “I swear you will never go back to any other brand.”

Kirkland’s mixed nuts went into her cart as well. The massive containers are a great option since you won’t need to replenish your snack stash as frequently.

At the butcher counter, Curley had a suggestion that’s great for a solo dinner or entertaining guests.

“Do not sleep on the New York strip,” she advised. “Make sure you get the prime. This cut is quality.”

She grabbed one more grocery staple before leaving the store.

“This next item is kind of controversial,” she warned before adding instant Vietnamese pho to her cart.

“Yes, I know that pho tastes better at a restaurant,” she said, “but if you have a pho craving, this does the trick.”

You shouldn’t grocery shop on an empty stomach, which is why Curley grabbed plenty of samples as she walked through the store.

She grabbed one more must-have item on her way out the door, too: a $1.50 food court hot dog to eat in the car.
