Deportation mum’s cruel choice – leave disabled daughter behind or take her home to die

May 28, 2023 by www.mirror.co.uk Leave a Comment

A mother facing cruel deportation from Australia faces an impossible decision on whether or not to leave her disabled daughter behind.

Kamisha Gobdurdhun moved to Australia in 2008 from the East African island nation of Mauritius and her daughter Sabiana was born a year later.

The 13-year-old was born with a rare genetic condition called Wolf-Hirschhorn Syndrome, which causes severe developmental delay. She can only speak about 15 words.

Kamisha moved to Australia on a student visa 15 years ago and when her renewal was rejected in 2018, she was granted ministerial intervention, with a medical treatment visa that expired last month.

The Mauritian national unknowingly missed her chance to transfer to a permanent visa, before her daughter became an Australian citizen.

She is now seeking another visa but fears it won’t be granted and she may be deported next month.

The single mum now faces the prospect of having to either leave her disabled daughter in Australia so she can continue getting the healthcare she needs, or take her back to Mauritius which would risk the 13-year-old’s life.‌

Kamisha told 9NEWS: “I know the difference between the medical treatment here and what we can get back home. Honestly if you say to me take Sabiana back home, it would be like someone saying to me OK, take her and let her die and I can’t do that.”

When Sabiana was born, doctors said she would not live past two. Kamisha says she owes her life to the Australian government and, everyone who “has fought so hard for her to still be alive today.”

Sabiana has been told she cannot get on a plane and she needs assistance with almost everything, from having a shower to feeding to walking to getting dressed.

Immigration Lawyer Adam Byrnes said only the Immigration Minister can and there are “unique and exceptional circumstances in this case.”

‌The Sydney mother said she tried every avenue before contacting the press to try to raise awareness of her case.

“The Minister [is] the only one here who has the power to do something here and I really expect him to do something and be fair”, she said.

She continued: “I am still going to be working, I’m still going to be paying my taxes, I’m still going to respect Australian values and contribute where I can.”

Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank have been forced to cancel the christening of their son August following “Covid contact”, sources have claimed.

But the plans did not go ahead after reports claimed an unnamed attendee was either told by the NHS Covid app they had been in contact with someone or had tested positive themselves.

Other royal guests at the christening were believed to be the Queen and Eugenie’s parents, Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson, who would then be hosting the after party at Royal Lodge.

10.25pm update: Zara Tindall and Mike: Why weren’t they seated with William, Kate and George at Wembley?

While Zara is the Queen’s granddaughter and may have been able to use her royal connections to get premier seats, it seems she and Mike wished to do their own thing.

Ahead of the game Mike reportedly stepped in to break up a fight after a spectator at Wembley Stadium was punched by a fellow England fan and ended up with a broken nose.

9.54pm update: Prince George ‘full of mischief’ and ‘plays pranks’ on Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis

The royal expert claimed that Prince George is “full of mischief” and enjoys the pranks he plays on his younger siblings.

Duncan Larcombe said the young Prince George, who will soon turn eight years old, is full of fun. However, he said that his parents Prince William and Kate, Duchess of Cambridge, want their son to stay down-to-earth and have promised to give a normal upbringing for their children.

Speaking to OK! author Duncan Larcombe said the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge want to ensure their seven-year-old boy does not grow up in a “goldfish bowl”.

Mr Larcombe said: “Although Prince George might be future King of the Castle, he’s not King of the Castle yet.

“He’s not Little Lord Fauntleroy.

“He’s a rascal, almost eight-year-old and full of mischief and always playing tricks and pranks on his younger sister and brother.”

9.14pm update: Harry claimed he was ‘trapped in monarchy’ despite Charles’ effort ‘not to run’ his life

Robert Jobson, a royal author, spoke to several Palace insiders for his 2006 book, “Williams Princess”, and wrote of how Charles was overly keen to teach his children to choose love over pressure given his fallout with Princess Diana .

Mr Jobson went as far as to comment: “William has already proven himself determined not to make the same mistake.”

In order to help his children realise this way of life, one insider told the author that Charles gave Harry and William as much freedom as possible in order to distance them from the royal system.

They said: “The Prince is not an overbearing man with his children. He knows they have experienced immeasurable pain with the loss of their mother at such a tender age and he in many ways has over-compensated.

“I am not saying he has let them run wild, but he certainly has not tried to run their lives for them in the way, perhaps, the Duke of Edinburgh did for him.”

7.43pm update: Kate Middleton is ‘pitch-perfect’ royal but ‘will never instigate change in The Firm’

Body language expert and author Judi James analysed five pictures of Kate taken since the start of the year and shared her insights.

Kate’s influence is limited despite her the fact she “has never put a foot wrong,” Judi claimed.

The expert told Express.co.uk: “Kate has always been a pitch-perfect royal, although the rather wary and rather protective approach of her husband has meant she has appeared slightly one-dimensional in the past, never putting a foot wrong but never revealing different aspects of her personality either.

“For the past couple of years though and especially since lockdowns started, we have been able to meet Kate properly as an independent royal; future Queen and of course wife and mother.”

The confidence Kate has shown at recent engagements will be a huge comfort to her husband and future king William, Judi claimed.

She explained: “If William was worried about the extra exposure and the increased interest in his wife he clearly didn’t need to.

“Her appearances as a campaigner in her own right; as a royal host by herself, and even as a very influential royal within the Firm have all revealed her traits of confidence and inner resolve.”

6.44pm update: Meghan and Harry face ‘harsh choice’ that could ‘improve or further damage’ royal rift

The couple, who now live in California, have yet to release information on when and where their new child Lilibet Diana Mountbatten-Windsor will be christened.

Their newborn baby Lilibet is eighth in line to the throne and takes her name from her great-grandmother Queen Elizabeth’s childhood nickname. The nickname was also used by the late Prince Philip, when referring to his wife.

A royal expert has said that Meghan and Prince Harry now have choices over whether or not to release pictures of their daughter and name her godparents ahead of her christening.

The way in which Meghan and Prince Harry do this could impact their strained relations with the Royal Family.

Royal expert Daniela Elser writing in News.com.au said: “If the Sussexes were to decide they wanted the christening of Lili to happen back in the UK, perhaps even in September when it has been rumoured that both Harry and Meghan will return to London, then it would be construed as an olive branch after years of intra-family squabbling and rancour.”

Ms Elser said the location of Lilibet’s christening has the potential to “improve or further damage” Prince Harry’s relationship with the royal family.

She continued: “However if the Sussexes decided to hold the ceremony in California, thus precluding the Queen who no longer travels internationally from attending, it would be seen as nothing less than a clear rejection of the royal family.

“There is also a third option here: They decide to skip a baptism entirely.

“But again, this too would be read as deeply disrespectful to Her Majesty given she is, after all, the head of the Church of England.”

Ms Elser spoke about the problematic dynamics behind Prince Harry and Meghan’s godparent choices for their newborn.

She said: “If they were to choose a cadre of A-list names, news of which would be bound to seep out in the press, then it would look like they are wholly throwing their lot in with their new Hollywood besties.

“This would give the impression that family and lifelong friends back in the UK be damned.

“On the other hand, opting to appoint a few carefully chosen cousins or old Eton mates could go a very long way to healing various breaches.”

5.57pm update: Princess Diana embarrassed Anne after making royal ‘look out of touch’ in public

Anne has made a name for herself as one of the Royal Family ‘s hardest working members. In the past few weeks, she has carried out scores of visits up and down the country. Yesterday, social media footage appeared to show her touching down in Plymouth, the visit believed to be intended for a private event at the Royal Citadel .

Here, she will meet with volunteers and members of the community who have worked on the Mayflower 400 commemorations to thank them for all their work, according to Plymouth Live.

Anne’s notoriously mechanical work ethic has reflected in her no-nonsense approach to the media and anyone she finds annoying.

Her dislike of Princess Diana, her brother Prince Charles ‘ ex-wife, became more than apparent during the years they spent together.

This shaky relationship was explored during Channel 5’s documentary, ‘Paxman on the Queen’s Children’.

Here, it was noted how the new royal brides of the time – Diana and Sarah Ferguson – would go on to disrupt the royal status quo and shake up the environment Anne was used to operating in.

The progamme’s presenter, former BBC journalist Jeremy Paxman, commented that Diana made Anne look archaic, and explained: “Diana and Fergie were much better at appearing human.

“Dedicated and hard-working Anne was most rapidly eclipsed.

“Diana made her look out of touch.”

4.10pm update: Kate is ALL of us! Duchess puts head in hands after England heartbreak at EURO 2020

Kate was spotted hiding her face in her hands after Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma saved the last penalty and crowned his team the winner of EURO 2020 .

The Duchess of Cambridge headed to Wembley Stadium yesterday evening after spending two days at Wimbledon to watch the Ladies and Gentlemen’s singles finals.

At the stadium, she joined her first-born Prince George and husband Prince William.

The Cambridges were seen celebrating after England stunned Italy with a goal just two minutes after the match began.

While the Duke of Cambridge jumped to his feet and pumped his fists in the air, Prince George celebrated with a big hug from his beloved mum.

The seven-year-old, who wore a matching suit and tie with his father, then clapped his hands and gave Prince William a big smile.

However, the royals became tenser in the second half of the match, as Italy equalised.

After Italy’s victory, Prince William was seen comforting his son placing his hands on George’s shoulders.

3.30pm update: Prince Charles makes nod to ‘rich diversity of cultures’ as he praises England football team

The Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall’s official Twitter account Clarence House posted: “’Recognizing the rich diversity of cultures which make this country so special – and in many ways unique – lies at the heart of what we can be as a nation.’ – The Prince of Wales, Windrush Day 2020.

“Well done @England on your fantastic #Euro2020 performance! You made us proud.”

3.11pm update: Meghan and Harry fans attack William over racist abuse tweet: ‘Charity begins at home!’

Last night, Gareth Southgate’s team lost to Italy in the final of Euro 2020. The tense match ended on penalities. Marcus Rashford, Bukayo Saka and Jadon Sancho all missed their penalties leaving Italy with a 3-2 victory.

But following England’s defeat, the three players were targetted by sickening racial abuse on social media.

The Duke of Cambridge – who attended the final at Wembley Stadium – took to Twitter to say he was “sickened” by the abuse and said it was “totally unacceptable”.

While people praised William’s stance against racism, others were quick to attack the future King for calling out racism in football but not the claims made by Meghan and Harry.

Meghan and Harry claimed there were conversations about Archie’s skin colour before he was born during their explosive interview with Oprah Winfrey in March.

One person commented: “See the hypocrisy, where were you when your brother’s wife was being harassed, vilified??

“Where was this energy, William?

“You would have even kept quiet than putting out this statement, you must be even the one who questioned the baby’s skin colour.”

Another added: “Yet, you were ok with Meghan Markle being the victim of rampant racism from members of Royal Family.

“You can’t have it both ways.”

Someone else tweeted: “Perhaps if you have a spare ten minutes search the name ‘Meghan’ and have a deep reflection.”

Another wrote: “If you can’t respond to racism when it happens to your sister in law you can’t respond on behalf of the nation and expect to be credible.

“Charity always begins at home, Sir!”

1pm update: ‘Princess Pinocchio!’ Meghan Markle given savage new nickname by furious critic of Duchess

The Duchess of Sussex has repeatedly come under attack by Piers Morgan over the last few years, with his criticism of the royal significantly ramping up following Meghan and Harry’s decision to step down from the Firm last year.

In March the journalist quit Good Morning over his staunch opposition to the Duchess, where he said he didn’t “believe a word” she said in her sit down interview with Oprah Winfrey.

ITV was inundated with Ofcom complaints about Mr Morgan’s discussions of the bombshell interview and over four months on from the incident the journalist is refusing to let the matter rest.

On Friday Mr Morgan launched a fresh attack on Meghan, branding her “Princess Pinocchio”.

He made the comments on Twitter, in response to a news article claiming that Ofcom received “unprecedented” numbers of complaints in 2020/21, with Piers Morgan accounting for a large number of them.

In response, the journalist wrote: “What this doesn’t say is that NONE of the Govt-related complaints against me was upheld, and I don’t expect the complaints relating to Princess Pinocchio to be either.”

12.20am update: Prince William makes touching gesture as he consoles Prince George after Euro 2020 defeat

William consoled Prince George after England’s gut-wrenching defeat to Italy in the Euro 2020 final at Wembley on Sunday.

The young royal was smartly dressed in a suit and tie as he joined his parents to cheer on the mighty Lions.

And initially it all seemed to be going like a dream, as Luke Shaw popped up to half-volley home Kieran Trippier’s cross in the second minute.

George, seven, enthusiastically celebrated the goal, beaming and hugging his mum, as Wembley exploded in euphoria.

12pm update: ‘I’m melting’: Fans go wild for adorable moment between Kate Middleton and Prince George

Prince George and Kate Middleton attended the Euros finals last night at Wembley Stadium last night. A sweet moment between the pair had fans of the royals in raptures.

Kate, George and William were present when England lost to Italy on penalties last night. England scored once during the game, in the first two and a half minutes.

The royals celebrated too, with William jumping to his feet and pumping his fists in the air.

Prince George, seven, celebrated by cheering before jumping into his mother’s arms.

Twitter users responded to the moment. One wrote: “I can’t, this is the cutest, I’m melting.”

11.10am update: Prince William ‘sickened’ by racist abuse of England heroes – ‘Must stop NOW’

Prince William issued a strongly-worded statement to demand the end of racist abuse against members of the England team.

Prince William, who is President of the Football Association (FA), took to Twitter to issue a statement against racism in football after members of the England squad have been inundated by disgusting remarks online.

The Duke of Cambridge said the abuse has left him “sickened” and demanded it to stop.

10.30am update: Meghan Markle and Prince Harry in ‘delicate balancing act’ over Archie’s image

Meghan and Prince Harry have to deal with a “delicate balancing act” when it comes to the public image of their firstborn, royal commentator Daniela Elser said.

After going through the most notable pictures and public appearances of the two-year-old, the expert said the Duke and Duchess of Sussex need to maintain a happy medium between public and private when it comes to their son.

She wrote in news.com.au: “Now, all of these are clearly very carefully controlled, calibrated outings that balance Harry and Meghan’s commitment to their son’s privacy with a tacit acceptance of the public interest in their son.

“It’s a delicate balancing act: Reveal him too much and the Sussexes will open themselves up to criticism they are reneging on their commitment to give him a normal life.

“However, hide him away and risk the umbrage and grumbling of their legion of fans.

“None of this is simple or easy but thus far Harry and Meghan have clearly recognised the very fraught territory their son occupies and managed to succeed at the highwire act.”

Meghan Markle’s ex-husband reportedly felt unwanted towards his marriage with the Duchess of Sussex, a royal biographer has claimed.

According to biographer Andrew Morton, Trevor Engelson gave a damning verdict of his marriage with Meghan and was furious when she returned her engagement ring.

The pair divorced in 2013 and Mr Engelson reportedly claimed he “felt like something stuck to the bottom of her shoe”.

Mr Morton made the claim in his book ‘Meghan: A Hollywood Princess’, where he also said the Duchess had sent the diamond engagement ring back to her husband in the post.

8.05am update: Gloating Italian newspaper mocks the Queen after Euro 2020 heartbreak – ‘We were stronger’

Gareth Southgate’s squad were narrowly defeated by the Italian team last night, as the tense final ended up going to penalties after the teams tied on 1-1.

Italians have revelled in the success of their squad, with a daily sports newspaper revelling in the result and even mocking the Queen as they celebrated winning the cup.

La Gazzetta dello Sport said: “Football is coming home. Sure, we can sing that now, even yell it without risking being punished for the crime of lèse-majesté. Because football is at home in Italy, too, and it is a beautiful blue house. And we did it in their home, in front of 60,000 England fans.

“We turned the Three Lions into cubs. We were stronger than the good wishes sent by Queen Elizabeth, than the encouragement of Boris Johnson and the good luck message sent by Tom Cruise. This time, the Mission Impossible was completed by the Italians.”

Barry series finale: The Mask Collector

May 29, 2023 by www.avclub.com Leave a Comment

Barry has Breaking Bad speedball. Ostensibly, a half-hour comedy about a disgraced Afghanistan veteran who becomes a hitman when he realizes his murderous set of skills has no real use in modern life. Well, outside of killing people for money. Still, Barry learns that maybe he could express some of his rage, PTSD, and the wide array of emotional problems that neither he nor the country that set him to war seems capable of solving through theater. Imagine what this country could be with an arts program as robust as its military-industrial complex. But it’s not. In the country where this recap is being written, Barry yells “Gun!” at a Walmart clerk, and neither she nor anyone in this bustling store of shoppers, clerks, security guards, and likely fellow veterans does a thing about it. Barry straps on two military-grade assault rifles, holsters his pistols, and walks purposefully through the automatic doors to his car unbothered by the heavy artillery attached to his person. Like the gangster who rides leisurely to NoHo Hank’s crime utopia earlier in the season , violence seemingly doesn’t register with people in the world of Barry .

Part of that, as the episode unravels, is the absolute hunger we as a society have for a clean narrative. This happened because of that. It’s been Barry ’s guiding light for the last four seasons as one bad decision begets another, and so on, until NoHo Hank clutches the bronze hand of the love of his life, his last breath heard only by the few barely living soldiers bleeding out around him. Sure, now, Livewire sees the value of human life as he pleads with Groove Tube to wake up. But it’s the narrative that compels us, right? Why did Barry do all this? Why did Fuches? Hank? The answer to why men do the things that they do is innocuous, an everyday evil, a banal response from Fuches: “I was a man with no heart.” It’s a charge that fits the bill for basically every man on this show.

Barry has long been a show about a bunch of Hollywood assholes who refuse to accept accountability for their actions. That it came out in the middle of the first wave of #MeToo allegations makes its satire a little overblown and on the nose. In a world where no one cares that a wanted, armed killer is walking through a department store with a face like Barry’s and the means to do it, the blind eye we all turn to these mundane evils is as much a part of the show’s narrative as anything. Of course, Barry wants us to have fun with this idea too. It is funny, says the critic who has been enjoying the show’s descent into darkness while still finding the bright spots of humor the show’s best attribute. How fun are we supposed to have with this stuff? What’s so funny about all this killing anyway? Through Barry’s perspective, we always had a detached view of the subject, allowing moments of horror to happen casually.

In Barry ’s final half hour, nothing’s really that funny until the narrative takes over. That narrative isn’t the one the show has been telling this whole time, the one with detours in the middle of nowhere or Hank’s NoHo hourglass. It’s the one that the people inside the world of Barry concocted to make sense of it. What do they do to the “Barry Berkman Story,” the tale of a lost veteran trying to understand himself through art and murder? They turn it into a Jack Reacher movie, an actioneer that could be charitably called “Paul Schrader lite.” After all, the only narrative left is the one where Barry is a hero, buried at Arlington Cemetery with full accommodations. I mused earlier this week about how I couldn’t see this show having its Taxi Driver ending, where he ends up the hero. And, aside from the whole getting shot in the forehead thing, that’s what happens. By the end of Barry , Barry’s a hero to the world and his son. That was God’s plan for Mr. Berkman.

And God answers Barry’s wishes. When the episode starts, we hear the same discordant sound cue we left off on last week. Hoping to draw that same line of intensity from the previous installment, we cut to The Raven, sitting pretty in his palatial tub when Hank calls with a deal. He’s got Sally and John, but Fuches is only interested in the latter. He’s barely interested in Barry.

While “The Mask Collector” has a very specific and stupid meaning come the episode’s end, it could very well apply to Fuches here. When Raven arrives at NoHobal to face off with Hank’s spectrum of goons that create a color profile that would make Roy G. Biv proud, he tells Hank that he had a come to Jesus moment in prison. After daily beatings, he realized exactly who he was: the aforementioned man with no heart. He sees the same in Hank. And while he calls Hank for what he is, a snake, he also demands that he drop the act, the denial that fuels Hank’s continued success as a businessman. And it crushes Hank.

Mostly told through a series of close-ups, the episode really gets a look at these characters’ faces, the lines, and the weariness. For years, Barry has presented masks of its characters as they pretend and insist they’re good people. Sometimes that mask is obscured through performance—this is a show about acting, after all. This is an episode about unmasking and what it takes to do that. Unsurprisingly, it’s Sally who gives the straight story first. In a tight profile with the back of John’s head hanging in the frame, Sally comes clean, telling John that she and Barry are fugitives and that she is a killer. She murdered a man, and it’s the first time she admitted it on the show, and God bless Sarah Goldberg, who looks as though 600 pounds had been slowly lifted from her chest, as she finally takes off the Emily mask and shows him Sally. He hugs her for the first time, and the two, in her honesty, share the second loving moment between child and mother on the show. It’s a moment of redemption for Sally and one that sets the course for her behavior in the rest of the episode as she becomes a more decisive and confident person. All it took was living through a firefight.

Hank isn’t so forthcoming. The close-ups between Fuches and Hank in their showdown were the moment when I missed Barry the most. How many shows are giving Stephen Root and Anthony Carrigan these lingering long takes to stare at each other, manipulating, crying, laughing, and saying everything without saying it? As with Sally’s mournful admission, Hader really lets the actor work while he simply captures their stunning performances with the camera. And they are stunning performances. Consider how far Carrigan has gone from season one, when he was mostly known for sending Bitmoji that undersell the danger they’re constantly in. Here, he’s a quivering mess, clearly and utterly devastated by Cristabol’s murder, with Fuches forcing him to take accountability, and he can’t. What follows is a quick firefight and one hilariously deadpan grenade that ends the conversation before it can happen.

As the scene comes to a close, with Hank’s last breath escaping his body, as dramatic as ever this one, Barry arrives with his arsenal just in time to catch Fuches and John on the way out the door. In the end, Fuches saved John and delivered him to Barry. Again, another pair of close-ups seemingly tells the audience that there’s an understanding between them now. In exchange for John’s safety, Fuches is no longer on the list. No words were exchanged. Fuches disappears into the night.

So Barry, Sally, and John escape the clutches of NoHo Hank, more or less, unscathed. Of course, John is fucked psychologically anyway because of who his parents are, but at least the better angles of Barry ’s writers’ room won out. John, after all, is alive. Still, now with her admission to John on the table, Sally shows off her inner Fuches and pushes Barry to turn himself in.

Barry’s religion has really become the last level of evading accountability. Who is he to judge himself? Only the Lord can do that. What’s more, he was ready to exchange his life for John’s safety, and considering God spared Barry, maybe they should just continue on their awful way, regroup and find a new place to hide out for the rest of their lives. However, the new and improved assertive Sally has been reading about Cousineau’s situation, how the cops have pinned all of Barry’s crimes on him, and how unfair all that is. She pushes Barry to turn himself in, and when he refuses, she turns her back to him. The next morning, she absconds with John, leaving Barry to fend for himself.

Like many series finales, Barry ’s has distinct sections, a few scenes for audiences to say goodbye to specific characters and versions of them. First, we said goodbye to Fuches and Hank, Barry’s crime world. The next one, though, is more personal, and like another season finale, it has a very abrupt finish. Barry arrives at Cousineau’s ready to do the right thing. Catching Tom as he sneaks out the door, Barry walks into Cousineau’s as his old teacher takes out Rip Torn’s pistol, a Chekov’s gun many times over, that has been the subject of one of Barry’s greatest sound gags and the source of one of its greatest cliffhangers. The latter was brilliantly memorialized by a Los Angeles Times headline in the episode. As Barry sits on the couch, he tells Tom to call the cops and begins to cry. It will be our last close-up of Bill Hader before Cousineau shoots him in the chest and head. It’s a stunning shot from the acting teacher, who must’ve done some target practice in Israel. But it seals the deal on Barry’s legacy.

The episode cuts to black, á la The Sopranos , immediately after the shot to the head. It’s so abrupt that for half a second, it felt like the real thing. Would Hader be so overt to court comparisons to television’s most prestigious prestige show? No, we’d fade back in and see Cousineau sit on his couch, seemingly serene. His nightmare is both over and just beginning because he’s going to jail, and to the rest of the world, he’s the masterful kingpin behind all these murders.

But that’s not all. In a move that can only be described as for the Our Town heads in the audience, the show does another time jump, taking us several years down the line to an older, wiser, and yes, slightly more confident Sally Reed. Now a theater teacher lapping applause for a well-received adaptation of Our Town , she beams with pride as she accepts her flowers. Outside, she quickly shoots down a date and lets John go sleep over at a friend’s house. She doesn’t overthink it. All the bad men are gone. She’s no longer seeing Shane’s bleeding eye in the cold light of day. Sally seems content without Barry in her life. Though, the way she looks at the flowers on her ride home does have a reminder of the flowers that Barry used to bring—er, the ones she asked him to bring her on the set of “Joplin.” There’s a sadness to her as she stares at the empty passenger seat, but it’s probably better than her life with Barry.

It’s at this point in a very short episode of television (relatively speaking) that it starts to feel a little like Hader is spinning his wheels. How is this all going to wrap up? It’s starting to feel a little anti-climactic, as if there’s even supposed to be some grand unified Barry theory that makes sense of everything we’ve seen over the last four years.

In the end, there is. It’s all about narrative. It’s all about how we consume, venerate, and celebrate violence and the violent people in society. John (now played by Hader’s fellow It alumni Jaeden Martell ) and his friend sit down to watch “The Mask Collector,” a sub-Lifetime adaptation of the Barry TV show. To pull another comparison to the Sopranos , its fidelity to show is very “ Cleaver ,” a bloody, cheap, and sensationalized account of the reality we’ve seen on TV. Moreover, it turns Barry into the hero of the story, the story that John’s heard before. It’s the story that, as Clark, Barry told John on the steps of their home . Poor Barry was manipulated by Cousineau and forced to do unspeakable things before saving his family and dying in a final confrontation. After years of telling people he’s a good person, Barry is the hero, a lost vet trying to understand himself and being taken advantage of by a capable older man.

Through that story, Barry escapes accountability forever. Print the legend of Barry, and that’s all everyone will ever know. It doesn’t matter that he was a man with no heart. It doesn’t matter about the truth. It doesn’t matter that Barry was a cruel, despicable human being who often killed because he didn’t have the skills for anything else. It’s a narrative that we can understand. That’s really what Barry was about. Violence is chaos, and in the process of making sense of it, we assign good guys and bad guys—a good guy with a gun takes out a bad guy with a gun.

Forgiveness needs to be earned, Hank reminds us in season three. Fuches seemingly earned it when he delivered John. Sally earned it when she told John the truth. Barry came ever so close to starting a path to redemption—well, sort of, Barry can’t really be redeemed—but it was too late. His crimes have already spawned another violent killer because that’s what violence does; it starts a cycle of violence, one we’ve seen play out numerous times on the show, particularly last season when the families of Barry’s victims disastrously tried and failed to get revenge.

Who knows what the secret knowledge of having seen “The Mask Collector” will mean for John. Maybe he’ll follow in his father’s footsteps. Or maybe he’ll be an actor like his mom. In its final frame, Barry asks us to consider what effect watching violence has on us as viewers. With John’s slight smile of relief, the mayhem that Barry presented is now fodder for mindless entertainment that belittle the real victims. At least Ryan Maddison’s father, who killed himself after driving Barry to the hospital, isn’t alive to see what Hollywood has made of his son and his son’s killer.

For all the darkness this season, it feels fair to ask one last time: Was Barry a comedy? Ultimately, it’s hard to laugh at the show because it started to look a lot like real life. The crimes on Barry aren’t so dissimilar from what we in the U.S. see on the news every day. In a country where multiple mass shootings happen daily, and domestic gunfire is a leading cause of death, what on this show is exaggerated? It takes Hank combing the ACME catalog and going full Looney Tunes to get a laugh out of this stuff. Over its short run, Barry became a show about the ways we perceive, mythologize, and try to shed ourselves of the responsibility of the violence around us. The ways we turn our heads from it and try to process it. Barry treated its characters as bad guys in a society that celebrates them. Barry was a bad guy with no heart, a product of a violent culture that gave him nothing but a gun and told him to kill. Now, he’s a hero. Tricky legacies.

Stray observations

  • “I figured out my dad bought my house with drug money… So he shot me.”
  • I’m starting a campaign to have the national anthem changed to a Bill Hader yelling “Guns!”
  • Fred Melamed creeping out of Cousineau’s house was one of the few laughs tonight, but it was a hardy one.
  • CeCe Peniston’s “Finally” gets a hell of a needle drop when Barry marches to the gun counter.
  • I can’t say how happy I am that Hader gave us so much Fuches and Hank business last week. As great as it has been to watch Carrigan really stretch out, there’s nothing quite like watching Hank figure out or escape a murder.
  • Alas, no more Larry Chowder from this show. I was really hoping that we’d get a taste of Chowder in a trailer when John started watching “The Mask Collector.”
  • It would’ve been easy for “The Mask Collector” to go overboard with the Cousineau character, but I thought Michael Cumpsty found a real solid balance. It must’ve been hard not to go even harder with it. His restraint is appreciated.
  • Thank you so much for reading our Barry recaps this season, and thank you for the great discussion in the comments, which always challenged my thinking on the show. It was a weird and difficult season, but more than other shows, I think Barry committed to its characters by not redeeming them, ultimately dragging the show down where it needed to be. It’s honest, in a way, about the type of show it is because none of this should really be all that funny anyway. That Barry could be so many things and do it in a half hour is an incredible achievement and a rewarding watch, even if it made us queasy sometimes.

Maharlika is food-poor

May 12, 2023 by opinion.inquirer.net Leave a Comment

After all is said and done, Filipinos remain food-poor. Not just embarrassing but actually pitiful. To think that Filipino officials are gallivanting around the world, presumably to promote the Philippine economy and business opportunities. I wonder if they have the humility and courage to show the grim reality of most Filipinos still stuck in finding and not affording food.

39% of Filipino families consider themselves food-poor. Another 35% consider themselves borderline food-poor. That makes 74% of Filipino families not having enough food to eat and not having the confidence at any time that they will have food security. With so many official foreign trips done and still happening, how much food security are Filipino families being blessed with?

I am sure, though, that superior popularity and approval ratings become a proud topic in the sidelines. With such high ratings, how can governance be bad? Such impeccable logic yet adds one more facet to the Filipino psyche – a born masochist.

Or a born beggar. Just months ago, in the last quarter of 2022, reports said that half of Filipino families received aid from government. I remember around this time in 2020, during the pandemic, government budgeted food assistance for 80% of Filipino families. With government subsidy to the majority of Filipino families comes high popularity and approval ratings. And also, extraordinary debt incurred, to be paid for by the next two generations of Filipino families, at least.

It is so funny that government statistics keep showing that there are less than 20% Filipinos below the poverty line. Last August 2022, the Philippine Statistics Authority reported that 18.1% lived below the poverty line. Yet, government aid keeps targeting half of Filipino families. I am not surprised anymore that most Filipinos do not complain, either about hunger, food poverty, or unbelievable poverty statistics. Anyway, the aid keeps coming, the national debt keeps climbing.

The running total of our national debt when the Duterte administration began its regime stood at 6 trillion pesos. The running total when the Duterte administration turned over the reins to Marcos, Jr. shot up to 13 trillion pesos, or more than doubled in 6 years. The aid to most Filipinos continued, as did the popularity and approval ratings. This is a neat combination – keep borrowing and let the next generations pay, keep subsidies going to keep the ratings up.

The Philippines will never be an industrial nation, never. A food-poor people never build an industrial nation. There was a time in the 60s when Singapore had vestiges of a poor country, having hardly any natural resources except one – the Singaporean people and the Singaporean leadership. Lee Kuan Yew had the vision and the character to lead without succumbing to greed along the way. The Singaporean people had the determination to lead simple lives and worked hard to follow their visionary.

Singapore imports more than 90% of their food but only a minimal percentage experience food poverty, and never for long. Only 1% of its land is dedicated to agriculture. The Philippines is an agricultural country. Yet, our poverty, food and otherwise, is enduring and stagnant – meaning its victims are born into poverty, die there, then leave it as a legacy to their descendants. No vision, no leadership, no role models to lead the people.

Our leaders are so proud to initiate the Maharlika Investment Fund, as though we are Maharlikans. We are not, not the traditional lower warrior class because we have a majority mendicant class, neither what twisted romantics try to portray as the royalty or nobility class. We are food-poor, food-threatened people. Our investment should be centered on food until there is no more food poverty or fear of hunger.

I propose a Food Investment Fund, a simple medium-term vision to eliminate hunger and food poverty, 5 years to bring down food poverty to below 5%. This Food Investment Fund will spark and fund all sorts of food production programs by the people themselves separate from traditional DA programs. Then, let us think of a Maharlika Investment Fund when we have deserved to be a proud nation that took care of its food-poor people.

We cannot continue to plan for the exception, and that is the minority 26% who are not concerned about their food needs. The exception, or what might be the imaginary royal or nobility class in the Philippines, cannot dictate any longer on what progress looks like. Not that they are incapable of lofty visions, but they are incapable of taking care of the majority poor in the one Filipino family we belong to.

Progress must take the first definition for the majority of Filipinos, and that definition is food-secure. Any people whose first and foremost concern remains to be food for the family cannot think farther than their supply in the kitchen – or their escapist transient moments with entertainment drama and personalities.

The Filipino rich and powerful, the royals and elite of Philippine society, have had enough time to nurture, develop, and empower the majority. They have failed. Perhaps, they never wanted to. Kindlier, perhaps, they just do not know how to stoop to where there is little or no food.

Government is supposed to be the big brother for the weak and the majority, big brother in heart and mind, big brother in plans and programs, big brother in operations and protection. Government is supposed to draw the stronger part of society to pull up the rest, because nearly all the wealth is in the hands of the minority rich.

It is not enough for the rich to pay their share. Not paying their share is a crime. It is their duty, instead, to lend their advanced resources, knowledge, and global networks to work for those left behind. After all, they made their billions off the people and the land.

Even Spiderman knew enough to understand that with great power comes great responsibility. Hear, hear, dear government, Spiderman was speaking to you, too.
