Queen is the best monarch of all time because she is ‘heroically boring’, historian says

June 22, 2022 by www.dailymail.co.uk Leave a Comment

The Queen has been the best British monarch because she is ‘transcendently boring’, a leading historian said yesterday.

While Tom Holland ’s assessment of the 96-year-old may not sound flattering, he explained that she was actually very intelligent, and the fact she ‘never says anything interesting’ was ‘heroic’.

He also said people will ‘encounter a dislocating twist that the past has gone’ when she is no longer with us, and called her ‘the model of a constitutional monarch’.

When asked to pick his favourite monarch since William the Conqueror, historian Tom Holland chose our reigning Queen because she was ‘transcendently boring’ which was also ‘heroic’. His brother added that the Queen was notable for holding herself to a high moral standard unlike some in positions of power

He was asked to pick the best monarch since William the Conqueror during a discussion at Chalke Valley History Festival with his brother James Holland, programme director of the event.

Tom Holland, a historian and broadcaster who specialises in medieval history, said: ‘She is transcendently boring. She never says anything interesting. We know that she is a very witty woman, very clever. She has persevered in an actually heroic show of being boring throughout her reign.’

His brother said the Queen was notable for holding herself to a high moral standard unlike some in positions of power.

Meanwhile, the historian nominated Richard III as one of the worst monarchs – but said King John narrowly outperformed him for sheer villainy.

He also said it was ‘unbelievable’ there was an infant and nursery school in Leicester named after Richard III.

Tom Holland nominated Richard III as one of the worst reigning monarchs. He was widely believed to be responsible for the murders of his nephew, Edward V and brother, Richard of Shrewsbury. Holland said he ‘had no doubt’ he was responsible for their disappearance

The monarch is widely believed to have been responsible for the murders of his nephews Edward V, 12, and his brother Richard of Shrewsbury, eight, known as the ‘princes in the Tower’.

Tom Holland said he had no doubt that Richard III had been responsible for the disappearance of the two boys.

Richard III, then Duke of Gloucester, was meant to be their protector but instead declared that they were illegitimate. The boys were last seen playing on the green at the Tower of London.

Tom Holland said: ‘He was a terrible king. If he’d done his job, the Yorkist dynasty would have been absolutely secure, but because he grasps after the crown, he murders his nephews.’

He argued that this undermined his legitimacy and led even his own family to turn against him to side with the Tudors.

Trump was scared North Korea fired missiles at U.S. after watching old footage on Fox News, says Graham

October 5, 2018 by www.newsweek.com Leave a Comment

President Donald Trump was afraid North Korea had fired missiles at the United States as he watched old footage from Kim Jong Un’s regime on Fox News, according to Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina.

In an interview with The Washington Post released on Friday, Graham described a scene in which he, Trump, former chief of staff Reince Priebus and former national security adviser H.R. McMaster were having lunch at the White House.

Graham said a television was tuned to the president’ favorite cable news network, and Trump mistook the video for an apparent real strike against the U.S. by Kim. Graham laughed about the incident to the Post saying he quickly calmed Trump.

“That’s old footage, old footage!” Graham said he told Trump.

The group had met to discuss national security, with Graham telling Trump that North Korea and Iran were his most important issues. Trump had campaigned on ending the Iran nuclear deal put in place by President Barack Obama, placing him and Graham on somewhat common ground.

The report largely focused on Graham’s transformation from a sharp critic of Trump’s in 2016 to one of his strongest public allies. Of late, that has taken form in the Senate Judiciary Committee and the approval process of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court.

Graham has ripped Democrats for what he labeled a “smear campaign” against Kavanaugh in an attempt to “destroy his life,” language Trump had also used while defending his second nominee to the court.

But the minor incident involving Fox, the North and Trump came well before the current president had fully engaged and even threatened Kim’s regime with “fire and fury.”

The tough-talk exchanges over Trump’s Twitter account and Kim’s state-run propaganda machine did somewhat heighten fears of a conflict between the two nuclear states, especially with Trump referring to Kim as “Little Rocket Man” on several occasions.

After a difficult 2017, Trump and Kim eventually made apparent inroads to somewhat normal relations following their summit in Singapore back in June.

While Trump’s opponents have said the meeting served little purpose other than emboldening Kim, the president did secure the return of remains of U.S. soldiers killed during the Korean War, and Kim has started to warm to South Korea and its President Moon Jae-In.

Kim agreed with Moon last month to shutter its main missile-building and nuclear facilities if the U.S. also agreed to “corresponding measures,” a term that has yet to be defined.

North Korea says US seeking an excuse for an Asian NATO with South Korea and Japan

July 3, 2022 by edition.cnn.com Leave a Comment

Seoul North Korea has criticized an agreement between the United States, South Korea and Japan to strengthen military cooperation — claiming it is part of a US plan to create a military alliance like NATO in the region.

North Korea’s foreign ministry spokesperson said as much to a question put by KCNA, the state news agency reported on Sunday.
“The reality clearly shows that the real purpose of the US spreading the rumor about a ‘threat from North Korea’ is to provide an excuse for attaining military supremacy over the Asia-Pacific region,” said the spokesperson.

“The prevailing situation more urgently calls for building up the country’s defenses to actively cope with the rapid aggravation of the security environment,” the spokesperson added.

North Korea expands work at nuclear test site to second tunnel, report says

US President Joe Biden, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol met on the sidelines of a NATO summit last week and agreed that the progress of North Korea’s nuclear and missile programs posed serious threats to not only the Korean peninsula but also East Asia and the world.

They said they would explore further means to reinforce “extended deterrence” against North Korea.
North Korea has this year been conducting missile tests at an unprecedented pace, and is believed by some to be preparing for another nuclear test.

“The deterrence capabilities of the Japan-US and US-Republic Of Korea alliances need to be upgraded as part of the essential effort to strengthen the trilateral partnership between Japan, the US, and ROK,” Kishida said.

Ties between Japan and South Korea have long been strained by memories of Japan’s occupation of the Korean Peninsula from 1910 to 1945.
Relations deteriorated to their worst in years under South Korea’s previous President Moon Jae-in, with spats over territory and history and the two nations calling off an intelligence sharing pact. Yoon, though, has expressed a desire to repair ties, and Kishida has also seemed to respond favorably.

North Korea expands work at nuclear test site to second tunnel, report says

June 16, 2022 by edition.cnn.com Leave a Comment

(CNN) North Korea appears to be expanding work at its nuclear test site to include a second tunnel, a US-based think tank said on Thursday, as South Korean and US officials say North Korea might conduct a nuclear test any day.

Preparation work at the Punggye-ri Nuclear Test Facility’s Tunnel No. 3 was apparently complete and ready for a possible nuclear test, the Center for Strategic and International Studies said in a report, citing commercial satellite imagery.
North Korea conducted six underground nuclear tests at the site from 2006 to 2017.

The research group said that for the first time, analysts had spotted new construction activity at the facility’s Tunnel No. 4, “strongly suggesting an effort to re-enable it for potential future testing”.

Outside Tunnel No. 3, images showed a retaining wall and some minor landscaping with small trees or bushes, likely in anticipation of a visit by senior officials, it said.

The two tunnels were never previously used for nuclear tests and their entrances were demolished in 2018, when North Korea declared a self-imposed moratorium on testing nuclear weapons and its intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs).
Leader Kim Jong Un has said he is no longer bound by that moratorium because of a lack of reciprocal steps by the United States during denuclearization talks, and North Korea resumed testing ICBMs this year.

South Korean officials said this week that North Korea was poised to conduct a nuclear test “at any time” and that the timing would be decided by Kim.

Blinken says US is prepared to make adjustments to military posture in response to North Korea

South Korea’s defense ministry spokesman, when asked about the report, said it was closely monitoring developments on North Korea’s nuclear activity together with US intelligence authorities but declined to comment further.
South Korean Foreign Minister Park Jin said on Monday after talks with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken in Washington that any provocation by North Korea, including a nuclear test, would be met with a united, firm response.
He urged China, for years North Korea’s only major ally, to use its influence.
Park also vowed to work to normalize an intelligence sharing pact with Japan “as soon as possible” to boost their responses to North Korea’s nuclear and missile threats.
The accord, the General Security of Military Information Agreement (GSOMIA), had been a backbone of trilateral security information sharing by South Korea, the US and Japan.

But South Korea had considered scrapping the pact with Japan in late 2019, during a period of strained ties, before a last-minute decision to renew it in the face of US pressure.
South Korean officials have said that since then, intelligence sharing with Japan had not been as smooth as it was before.

For Whom the Bell Tolls
If you are someone who matters, then by now you would be booked on the charter for this week’s mega shaadi of Isheta and Atulya at Stoke Park in the UK. Daughter of Dipti and Raj Salgaocar and niece of Mukesh Ambani , the bride is tying the knot with the son of Vinod Mittal and nephew of LN Mittal . A summer soiree, the celebrations kick off with a black-tie dinner and dance event on day one followed by the grand wedding with all the bells and whistles — baraat swagat, jaimala, hasta melap — and some more dinner and dancing by the Stoke Park lakeside. Dress code, however, for this is pastel traditional. One thing is for sure, 007 or Goldfinger won’t be invited.

Seat for the Lieutenant

Loyalty pays if you are a lifelong confidante in a Marwari business family. And history is repeating itself. Some months back we reported a personal investment in a digital bank in the UAE by this soft-spoken billionaire industrialist. Fresh from the oven, the board of this institution has been put in place. It includes top Emirati officials, a former Franklin Templeton CEO, Yusuffali MA of the Lulu Group , and an Indian CFO representing his boss. If you can manage the finances of a $45-billion global Indian conglomerate, a digibank shouldn’t be much of a bother.

Waah Netflix !
Ever since his second stint began, the super boss of our largest conglomerate is truly over the moon — a much-awaited digital launch, a new pad, praise and prizes. The cherry on top must be his recent rendezvous with former US President Barack Obama, who, we hear, spent a day shooting at its Big Apple luxury property for a Netflix documentary on the iconic hotel brand. Oldtimers like us recall Obama’s solemn speech and laying of a wreath at the Mumbai flagship in memory of those who fell during the Mumbai terror attack. This should be a must-watch.

A New Beginning?
Will this maverick, larger-than-life tech investor hang up his boots following his milestone birthday? If the chatterati in Europe and Delhi is to be believed, he is seriously toying with the idea. Launching a fund of his own after managing more money than the gods for his boss is the simplest option, but knowing him and his tobacco-chewing habit, maybe a vineyard or a cigar gig would be more up his alley.

Good to Bad to …
In this season of tech and startup meltdowns, we hear one more hotshot, consumer-facing unicorn could be biting the dust very soon. ET recently reported existing investors giving the thumbs down to its largest buyout but now a little birdie tells us two of its last deals are yet to get consummated due to lack of funds. What’s worse, the plan of raising half-a-billion dollars at close to $1.8 billion pre-money valuation has gone down the tube as well with the withdrawal of a blue-blooded US investor who surely knows a thing or two about Indian D2C brands, having backed most of the success stories. This after submitting a term sheet. Last heard, the current backers, an equally prestigious bunch, are ready to bankroll the venture but at a valuation equal to the total sum that was to be raised this round.

Reliance Jio Chairman, Mumbai Indians Owner & A Doting Father: Akash Ambani Wears Many Hats

Here’s a look at some of the memorable moments in Ambani Jr’s life.

The Succession

Akash Ambani has been appointment as the new Chairman of the Board of Directors of Reliance Jio. Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani handed over the reins to his elder son after resigning from the board.

Phase-I Of The Plan

Ambani Jr’s elevation comes after he made notable contributions to the digital services journey. The RIL Chairman realised it was time to hand over more responsibilities to his son.

Dialling 4G

Akash, who has graduated from Brown University with a major in Economics, was involved with the creation of the digital ecosystem around Jio’s 4G proposition. He worked with a team of engineers to invent the revolutionary Jio Phone in 2017, making 4G affordable for many Indian households.

Welcoming The New Era

Reliance launched its telecom business in 2016. At that time, Akash – along with his twin Isha – actively participated in the group’s new-age ventures. From unveiling the Jio Phone to introducing Jio Fiber, the two have been involved in major initiatives at Jio.
